What’s on at Zeitz MOCAA in June

Zeitz MOCAA is open late every First Friday. Join us this month for DJ sets by Future Nostalgia and Gerald Machona, an artist who also features in the exhibition Still here tomorrow to high five you yesterday…

Guests will also get an opportunity to join in for adult drawing or embark on an interactive scavenger-hunt of our current exhibitions with Discover MOCAA between 5 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. Participants will follow clues and questions to discover key works of art and themes and stand a chance to win prizes.

CHILDREN’S HOLIDAY PROGRAMME 17 – 28 JUNE 2019 | CENTRE FOR ART EDUCATION | 10AM – 1.30PM

Join us this winter school holiday for a variety of engaging and exhilarating workshops at our Centre for Art Education for children between ages 6 and 12. They will be encouraged to explore a range of different mediums in a creative and nurturing space.

STILL HERE TOMORROW TO HIGH FIVE YOU YESTERDAY CURATOR-LED TOUR | 8 JUNE 2019 | LEVEL 2 | 11AM – 12 PM

Join Curatorial Assistant, Precious Mhone, for a walk-through of the second iteration of Still here tomorrow to high five you yesterday… The walk-about will unpack the various themes in Chapter Two and how the works selected allow for multiple readings of the space.

CHILDREN’S TOUR | MOCAA MAPPING THE WORLD | 1 + 8 JUNE 2019 | RECEPTION AREA | 11AM – 12.30PM

Children between the ages of 9 and 12 are invited to join us for a morning of fun-filled discovery. As they move from one work to another, they will fill in a blank map of the world, using symbols, drawings or words recording their findings about each artwork as well as their reactions to, and opinions about the artworks. Children and guardians will be met by an education staff member at the front desk/reception area.

ZEITZ MOCAA FOOD | POP-UP DINNERS | 13 JUNE 2019 | LEVEL 6 | FROM 6PM

Zeitz MOCAA Food will be warming up Cape Town this winter with its new pop-up dinners starting in June, each its own bespoke menu. Dinner will start at 6 p.m. and the last booking will be taken at 8.30 p.m. Zeitz MOCAA members get priority booking for this event. There will also be a members-only guided tour of the new chapter of the exhibition Still here tomorrow to high five you yesterday…

FAMILY LEARNING PROGRAMME | 1 JUNE 2019 | CENTRE FOR ART EDUCATION | 11AM – 1PM

Children between 3 and 8 years old are invited to our child-led, family learning workshop on 1 June. This open-ended, lively visual arts learning event will start with a story and will encourage families to make 3D and 2D objects. Children with physical and learning disabilities are also encouraged to join.

OPEN STUDIO FOR PARENTS AND CHILDREN | EVERY WEDNESDAY | CENTRE FOR ART EDUCATION | 10AM -1PM

Every Wednesday, the Centre for Art Education is open from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., offering children and parents practical-making activities inspired by themes or works in the exhibitions. The activities will be facilitated by our staff but will not take the form of a structured formal art lesson. Parents with their children can enter that space during these times to participate in fun workshop activities.

Still here tomorrow to high five you yesterday… Chapter Two, continues its exploration into notions of progress and utopia. With a focus on politics, history and pertinent global issues as they relate to contemporary African sensibilities, Sue Williamson will be discussing her immersive installation A Few South Africans.The series was made at a time when South Africa was still firmly under the grip of apartheid, and attempted to make visible the history of women involved in the struggle for freedom.

V&A WATERFRONT MUSEUM NIGHT | 27 JUNE 2019 | AFTER HOURS

Join us as we celebrate the V&A Museum Night with free access for student card-holders and under 18s, and half price admission for all others, throughout the whole evening. V&A Museum Night is a multi-institution after hours cultural experience. For one night the public is invited to explore the precinct’s cultural institutions after-hours at reduced rates.  Zeitz MOCAA Food will also be celebrating Museum Night with a special Zeitz MOCAA ‘Food is art’ inspired dinner with live music. STILL HERE TOMORROW TO HIGH FIVE YOU YESTERDAY DISCUSSION | 28 JUNE 2019 | SCHERYN ARENA | 11AM – 12.30PM

Join us for a discussion between Curator, Azu Nwagbogu, and art critic and writer, Antwaun Sargent, as they look at a selection of artists from the exhibition Still here tomorrow to high five you yesterday… whose work reflects a black vanguard.

The artists selected use photography and video-based work to create connections between art and fashion. Sargent has contributed to The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vice and has also written essays for multiple museum publications.

ZEITZ MOCAA SCHOOLS’ PROGRAMME | LEARN, LOOK, ENGAGE

As part of our education programme, Zeitz MOCAA offers schools and tertiary groups access to tours, workshops, and other educational programming.

School programmes take place on Mondays, Thursday and Friday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Pre-booking is essential. Contact education@zeitzmocaa.museum for more information or visit our website.

WILLIAM KENTRIDGE EXHIBITION INSTALLATION

In August, the largest exhibition to be held in Africa by internationally acclaimed artist William Kentridge will open at Zeitz MOCAA and Norval Foundation.

The exhibition, titled Why Should I Hesitate? Putting Drawings To Work, will see the closure of the museum’s Level 3, and some other parts of the museum, to the public as the installation takes place from 1 June.

The exhibition will also feature an exciting and engaging line-up of programming. Be sure not to miss this historic exhibition when it opens on 24 August.
