Paradigm Gallery Presents “Obsolescence”

Paradigm Gallery + Studio (746 S 4th St) is pleased to present Obsolescence, a solo exhibition by Sweden-based artist Ulla-Stina Wikander, open October 25 – November 23, 2019. The artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States, Obsolescence, features new works from Wikander’s well-known series of household objects covered in colorful, vintage embroideries. Obsolescence will have a public opening reception on October 25 from 5:30 – 10:00pm.

Wikander began collecting vintage embroideries 15 years ago in antique stores and flea markets, initially attracted to the intricate designs of needlework textiles. Although Wikander was traditionally trained as a painter and sculptor, the unknown histories of the women who made the embroideries interested her and she began experimenting with her new collection. Wikander’s earliest experimentation with textile began with covering a broken vacuum cleaner she had laying around in her home. Through a meticulous process of deconstruction and reassembly, she transformed the anachronistic tool into something visually absorbing and entirely new, giving the vacuum a new reason to exist. Although not all of the objects Wikander covers are broken, they’re all out-dated. Through Wikander’s process, these retro items are transformed and recycled into fully contemporary sculptures.

On her practice Wikander says, “It is rather new for me to be a part of the textile community because I have always regarded myself as a painter and sculptor. While I do not embroider myself, I am always very meticulous when I choose my patterns.  Embroidery is very hard to find nowadays, so I often travel to small towns in Sweden to find them. I have a big collection with hundreds of embroideries, organized into boxes by motif. I do not know if it is accepted among textile artists, to cut embroideries into pieces, but I think my work is a bit different. I always have a bad feeling that I am destroying a beautiful embroidery that someone else has made, but the recycling of something forgotten also feels current and good”.

The latest artworks included in Wikander’s Obsolescence exhibition are suffused with humor and critical explorations of feminism, domesticity, and upcycling. Her intricate textile constructions are shaped by the forms that lie underneath – including irons, blow dryers, shoes, bags, lamps, books, and phones. Freshly adorned in coverings of flowers, animals, and pastoral scenes, the items transcend their former functionality and are simultaneously revelatory and recognizable. Wikander’s vibrant re-appropriations are evocative formal studies that defy categorization and illicit equal parts dissonance and delight.

Important Financial Steps Before Starting Your Own Business

If you had a dollar for every time another business failed due to missteps in their business finances, you’d probably be able to fund your entire operation without worrying.

You don’t want to be one of those business owners with a company that slowly (or sometimes quickly) sinks because they lack a firm grip on their finances. And if you intertwine your business and personal finances, even more trouble can arise.

Here are some important financial steps you should consider and map out before starting your own business.

Choose Your Business Entity Type

Choosing your business entity type sets the stage for all of your financial decisions moving forward. This is step number one, and it’s a big deal. You need to decide whether you want to form a Limited Liability Company (LLC), S Corporation (S Corp), C Corporation (C Corp), or Nonprofit.

This will determine the type of financial protection you may have, as well as taxation details and associated filing fees. Keep in mind that you can choose an initial structure and then reevaluate at a later time if the needs of your business change.

Decide How You Want to Manage Your Finances

As an entrepreneur, you may already be a wizard with finances and might want to manage your accounting on your own, which is totally your prerogative. But if you’re not a numbers wizard, then recognize that you should employ a financial expert or hire a financial consultant and/or accountant.

When you decide whether to manage it yourself or hire an expert, you will then decide on an accounting system that works for your business. After that, decide whether your business should use cash or accrual accounting.

Open Business Banking Accounts

You should open both a business checking account and a business savings account; having an entirely separate business banking system is important. You should also consider opening a business credit card. This will help you manage all of your business-related expenses, which you can use as deductions when filing for your taxes.

Don’t Forget to Pay Yourself

Last but not least, you need to establish guidelines on how you pay yourself as a small business owner. You are doing the hard work as the brain and heart of the organization, so you deserve a slice of the pie — and not a small one. You need to pay yourself enough so you’re not eating cereal every night for dinner, but not too much that your business checking account doesn’t have enough to cover that client coffee date. It’s a fine balance.

Two MIT Sloan MBAs launch new startup

Two MIT Sloan MBAs will launch a new startup called Season Three this fall. The only direct-to-consumer company focused on the fashion lifestyle space in the accelerator, Adam Klein, MBA ’19, and Jared Johnson, MBA ’20, will offer a product line featuring all-weather Merino wool lined boots engineered at MIT.

“Our product fits an open space within the shoe industry that existing shoes have failed to fulfill. The boots are designed for all humans – they are unisex – making style and comfort accessible to everyone. They encourage the exploration of your surroundings, without sacrificing professionalism,” says Klein.

Johnson says, “The resources, support, and mentorship provided at MIT Sloan were invaluable. They helped us go from nothing to something.”

Meeting in MIT Sloan’s MBA Program, the team combined Johnson’s passion for fashion as well as design experience with Klein’s entrepreneurial, finance and legal experience to create an outdoors brand that they describe as a “marriage of fashion, comfort, and functionality.”

The idea began with a personal need, explains Johnson. “We were walking in Boston on a snowy, cold winter day in big chunky boots. We talked about how boots could be designed better not only in terms of style, but also thermal stability. We wanted to create a comfortable boot that anyone could wear to the office and then move throughout the city during the day and to events after work. Out of that came Season Three.”

Klein adds, “Jared brings a tremendous knowledge of footwear to this venture. Before MIT, he pursued design with the goal of working in the fashion and footwear sector.”

At MIT, they began working on the idea through the MITdesignX program in MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning and received support from the MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund. They also received support and mentorship from the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship as well as feedback from faculty, alumni, and classmates. Through classes, they refined their business plan and marketing strategy.

The cofounders designed the boot at MIT with their “Threedom footbed,” which provides shock absorbing qualities for comfort as well as greater absorption of moisture. The boot is temperature controlled by a combination of merino wool and weather-proof leathers.

“No other product caters to the new lifestyle of the ‘WeWork Generation,’ where someone working 60 hours a week needs fashion to seamlessly flow between professional environments, drinks with friends, and side hustles in between. As a unisex brand, we recognize an eagerness within all humans,” says Johnson. “We believe our boots are a product that advocates for collective unity.”

The founders will participate in the delta v program Demo Day presentations at MIT, New York City, and San Francisco in September. They plan to officially launch their online store in November. The boots will be their initial product and retail at $345.

“We’ve received a lot of interest because the boots were designed at MIT and we occupy a unique position in the fashion lifestyle space. We are taking everything we learned in school to build this company, and we look forward to our launch this fall,” says Jared.

Top Five Tips For Avoiding Colds and Flu This Season

1. Take It Easy. Stress is a sure way to compromise your immune system. Be sure to make sure that you are taking care of yourself and making time to rest and restore in order to keep your stress levels at a minimum.

2. Take Vitamin C. Supplementing your diet with Vitamin C is a great way to ward of colds and flu. We don’t typically get enough Vitamin C from our diets alone, so a supplement is often the best way to go. Vitafusion makes a Vitamin C gummy that is easy to take, and a great way to get your daily dose of Vitamin C.

3. Avoid Closed Places. Cold and flu viruses spread via the air, so try to avoid spending too much time indoors where there may be people who are sick (like shopping malls). Try to get outdoors as much as you can, as the brisk air can be great for your health and also very refreshing.

4. Wash Your Hands, and Face. Washing your hands is a no-brainer, but don’t forget to wash your face! We often touch our face with our hands, and germs can be sitting there just waiting to invade.

5. Use Sanitizer. Keeping your work and home areas clean of viruses is important. Use sanitizer to wipe down the places where germs might be lingering, such as door knobs, bathrooms, faucet handles, and keyboards.

Top Tips to Cut Prom Costs and Still Guarantee a Great Night

Today, high school proms have evolved into red carpet events that can easily cost families hundreds of dollars. But the good news is that, according to the experts, there’s no need to blow your savings account on prom – you can do it on a budget and still ensure that your child has the time of their lives. Whether it’s buying outfits, arranging transport or getting hair and makeup on point, there are plenty of budget-friendly alternatives that you can swap for while still making sure that your teen looks and feels a million dollars on the night. We’ve put together some of the best money-saving tips for parents for the upcoming prom season.

#1. Saving on the Prom Dress or Tux:

If you’ve got a daughter who’s going to prom, then chances are her dress is going to take the biggest chunk out of your budget. But the good news is that there are several things you can do in order to save money on the dress, or at least get a more value-for-money option. And the same goes if your teen is wearing a tux.

Buy online – online shopping is a godsend when it comes to getting a prom dress or a tux. You can often find budget-friendly options at online stores. For instance, Jovani stock dresses to suit every budget (without the quality being compromised) which might be worth exploring . And, don’t just look at dedicated prom sites too; you may be surprised at what comes up in the evening dress section of your favorite online clothing store or the suit section at a popular menswear retailer.

Rent – since the dress or tux is only going to be worn for the one night, renting instead of buying is a sensible option – however, this will mean that your teen has to be extra careful not to damage their outfit on the night. If you’re willing to take this risk, renting instead of purchasing outright can save a significant amount.

Second hand – finally, whether you’re getting a dress or a tux for your teen, don’t rule out second-hand options. There will be plenty of parents selling off last years’ prom outfits at bargain prices.

#2. Save on Accessories:

When it comes to accessorizing a prom outfit, you can end up spending much more than you’d bargained for if you’re not careful – especially if your teen wants the full works! Keep these tips in mind to make sure that you stay within your budget:

Keep it simple – according to the experts, this year it’s all about the earrings – so investing in a stunning pair of earrings will finish the outfit off nicely. Excessive bling isn’t on trend anymore, so there’s no need to go all out with necklaces, bracelets and rings. If you’re choosing accessories for a tux, a pair of quality cufflinks are ideal. Don’t forget that these are items that can be used again and again, so they make perfect graduation gifts too.

Shoes – there’s plenty of dancing to be had at prom, so don’t overspend on shoes that are probably going to be coming off within the first couple of hours.

#3. Showstopping Makeup and Hair on a Budget:

Makeup is a must for most teenagers at prom – whether it’s a full face or a slick of tinted moisturizer. When it comes to makeup:

Multitasking products are your friend – if you’re getting new cosmetic items for your teen for prom, then opt for items that can double up, like lipsticks that double as cheek stain, or eye pencils that can be used for filling in brows.

Use what you have – there’s no need to experiment with an entirely new makeup look for prom. If your teen already wears makeup, chances are they have a look in mind that they are comfortable with, and the products that they already have will probably do just fine.

Practice makes perfect – when it comes to hair, going to a salon might not be necessary. Check out Pinterest and YouTube tutorials, and spend some time practicing styles beforehand so you can DIY it.

#4. Arrive in Style for Less:

Celebrating with a meal and arriving to prom in style can be pricey, so keep these tips in mind:

Check out coupon sites – websites like Groupon can be an ideal place to look if you want to find the best deals on limo hire in your area, plus discounted meals at posh restaurants fit for a prom queen or king.

Host it yourself – instead of a fancy restaurant, hosting a pre-prom dinner at your home or a cheap local venue can help to cut costs, especially if you get all the parents involved when it comes to bringing a dish along.

Do you have any money-saving tips for prom of your own to add? We’d love to hear from you in the comments.
