Nat’l Pina Colada Day Cocktails

Nat’l Pina Colada Day (July 10): Toast with Reimagined Malibu Pina Colada Cocktails!

Malibu Coconut Water Pina Colada

·         Ingredients:

o    1 ½ part Malibu Original

o    1 ½ parts Coconut Water

o    2 parts Pineapple juice

o    ½ part Fresh Lime Juice

·         Method: Pour all ingredients into an ice-filled shaker, shake until cold and strain into a chilled glass filled with ice cubes, top with pineapple juice

·         Garnish: Slice of pineapple

 Malibu Pea’na Colada

·         Ingredients:

o    1 ¼ part Malibu Original

o    ¾ part Stoupakis Mastiha

o    ½ part Coconut Milk

o    ½ part Simple Syrup

o    ¾ part Snap Pea Juice

o    ½ part Lemon

o    Pinch salt

·         Method: Whip with pebble ice, serve over pebble ice

·         Garnish: Split Pea, Lemon Wheel


Classic Malibu Pina Colada

o    1 part Malibu Original

Kareem Bunton’s Creating a Scene in Brooklyn

Kareem Bunton is a veteran of the NYC nightlife having romped around at revered spots such as Mr. Fongs, VON, Union Pool and even Max Fish. He’s also got musical collaborations with Run the Jewels, Prefuse 73, and TV on the Radio under his belt. Now he’s loading up all of his experience in the limelight and taking it to a refreshing venue in Bushwick.

New York nightlife has found a new breeding place in Brooklyn, so it’s no surprise Bunton’s World Famous is taking root there. BWF is embracing an unexpected vibe of a Tangier hotel bar – obviously one enticing to the young urban “cool kids” ready to relive their ‘90s dreams.

“What I like best about the’90s scene,” he says, “was that it didn’t really matter what you had in your pocket or what you did in the daytime. Looking good, being a great dancer, or just having a lovely personality were often enough to get you through the door. Building a space is easy, creating a scene is not. To do this we are attempting to build a sense of community by hiring old school DJ’s and youngsters.”

The cozy 1400 square foot space will be importing the Tangier’s tropical vibes with drinks that’ll make you mistake Brooklyn for a sultry tiki bar on the beach, high in contrast to the mainstream cocktail lounge. Lucas Moran of Mr. Fongs will be constructing the menu, “Think flavored daiquiris, hurricanes, rum runners,” says Bunton. “It’s usually my preference to keep cocktails simple and quick to make. Waiting 10 minutes for a drink while listening to an unsolicited speech about botanicals is not my idea of a good time.”

In a time where emphasizing unity and equality is pertinent, Bunton’s mission is to bring together the diverse community of artists and fashionistas into a memorable night of dancing reality away to old-school hip-hop.

Remaining unconventional and consistent with his exotic theme, Bunton says, “We are going to structure the schedule by genre rather than promoters or weekly residents. Different DJs will be able to share their interpretations of reggae, afrobeat, nuyorican soul.”

In addition to creating a unique and sexy scene, Buton’s World Famous also has a captivating retail element made up of t-shirts and snapback hats flush with the classic Bunton’s logo for the stylish enthusiasts of the scene to rock.

Debuting during New York Fashion Week on Friday, February 15th at 1005 Broadway, Bunton’s World Famous is a venue to explore for those ready to delve into a sultry salvation.

Huba-Huba Cambodia

Cameron Michael Parkes was born in Vancouver, Canada (in British Columbia). He graduated from the University of Calgary, majoring in chemical engineering with a minor in petroleum. While working at a consulting firm, the oil prices dropped and he used his severance package to travel the world.

Throughout his two year journey in Southeast Asia, he found himself at Koh Rong Samloem – a small island just off the coast of Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Two main places to stay are Saracen Bay (dense more modern filled with tourists) or Mpei Bay (rustic village area with tons of locals). After a few weeks in both places, Cameron decides to trench through the hot and sticky jungle (with snakes, wild monkeys and insects) to the most desolate yet serene part of the island, Sunset Beach. He quickly becomes acquainted with paradise and decides to plant his feet at Huba-Huba where he enjoys perfect sunsets with unobstructed sea views.

After a brief trip to Sri Lanka, he returns to Huba-Huba to discover that the owner’s husband had passed in a tragic motorcycle accident. The widow offered to sell and Cameron decided to purchase. Looking back he says, “I like the beach-jungle vibe which isn’t perfect. I love this spot. Right on the beach, beautiful bay, monkeys come around, geckos.”

Huba-Huba Cambodia

Situated at the end of the beach, it contains 4 bungalows, 1 family bungalow, 4 private double rooms and 1 dorm – 8 beds and 3 tents. Their kitchen is armed with one of the best cooks on the entire island. Their “BBQ Nights” serve up sensational samplers of pork ribs, tofu, prawns and chicken. Polite waitstaff, heavy handed mixologists and free painting station where you can repurpose instruments as well as pieces of wood to build a sculpture from scratch. Snorkeling gear is available for rental.

Sleeping Trees owned by Yves Chalot

Yves (a notable bartender from Brittany) came to Sunset Beach as a dive instructor and fell in love. One day after speaking with his bosses, he discovers a beachfront property for rent. Then he invites his brother (a carpenter) and they decided to erect ‘Sleeping Trees.’ The name derived from only having tree tents and the idea of ‘sleep in’ trees arose. The vacation area has two newly renovated bungalows, four tipis and four tree tents. Each space can accommodate up to two people. In addition, there’s a 4-room dorm which can host eight. At the present moment, both owners want to focus on better gardening and overall aesthetics of the property. Best attributes are their crepes, homemade rum shots and Reggae Night on Saturdays.

Robinson Bungalows

Sebastian Straub, former social worker in Switzerland, has now owned the property for 5 years alongside of his wife Julia. Their location is pet-friendly and includes 7 bungalows and 7 tipis. Each bungalow is constructed from wood with straw rooves perfect for a cozy and tropical stay. Their reimaginged family bungalow or ‘Cozy Kikki Lu’ is an ideal choice for guests seeking modern-like amenities. Tents make for a perfect glamping experience since they’re about thirty feet from the ocean. We enjoyed soaking up the sun in one of the 20 hammocks on the premises. Take advantage of the full bar and $1 beers during happy hour. The onsite restaurant takes advantage of seasonal local produce and fresh catches when possible. Our favorite menu items were the English breakfast, hearty fruit bowls, red snapper and barbecued pork & chicken skewer. You may enjoy meals upstairs (two-stories high) in an outdoor covered dining patio and/or at the beach bar. Every morning, a taxi boat for guests cost $10 to go to the city and is easily accessible.

Sunboo Beach Bungalows

Karlo and Parisa Zahipour Moarefi both came from Austria, borrowed money from friends and invested in Sunboo. There are 6 Bungalows and a dorm with 8 beds. The beach or garden bungalows have ceiling fans and newly renovated bathrooms and sinks. With a strong Italian influence, everyday dining is delightful. For breakfast they make french toast, pancakes, crispy bacon and homemade baguettes. For lunch fresh gnocchi, burgers and triple fried french fries. The dinner menu is westernized with our favorite thin crust pizza. And of course the Sunboo beach bar is the party area where we sip and socialize. One of the only establishments which serve wine on Sunset Beach.

Sunset Adventures Dive Shop

They offer a full array of outdoor activities on the island with two locations – Saracen Bay and Sunset Beach. We took their half-day diving class (for all levels) and their master instructors were extremely attentive. The rock climbing experience offers amazing views of the sea. Kayaking trips are a must-try with a guide to discover the wonderful island and underwater world. The most intriguing activity on the island is the nighttime plankton tour which allows one to witness and capture their bioluminescence.

Lazy Beach Resort

A private tropical hideaway on Koh Rong Samloem. The vacation area has 1 private beach, 22 bungalows and 1 guest house. The wooden bungalows all have two large double beds, en-suite bathrooms and a spacious balcony offering waters edge views of the warm tropical ocean. Paddle boarding is one of the most popular activities to do, but also board games, snorkeling and dive sites. The infamous bar is a must visit with the number one drink being the ‘Bahama Mama.’ All sorts of signature drinks like brown and white rum malibu, grenadine and juices. This private beach getaway is breathtaking.

Koh Rong Samloem Lighthouse

The most amazing experience on the island and also its highest point. We recommend you take a taxi boat to the drop-off or trail which leads up to the lighthouse. Rumored to have been an old military watch tower, the views are spectacular. Be prepared to climb at least 7 to 8 stories to the top. The smell inside the lighthouse is a tad overwhelming and rancid. Be willing to pay at least $1-3 USD for the private tour. That price does not include the taxi boat.

KEY WEST FESTIVAL

Key West Festival to Tempt Appetites for Food, Wine, History and Fun
 
Creative cuisine, premium wines and unique events in a subtropical island setting await attendees Wednesday through Sunday, Jan. 23-27, at the 2019 Key West Food & Wine Festival. The 10th annual festival celebrates Key West’s rich culinary culture and historic sites. 
 
Scheduled events showcase local chefs’ artistry, indigenous Florida Keys ingredients, fine wines from around the world and intriguing food-related adventures. 
 
The festival officially begins with the Conch Kick-off Party at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, saluting the unique food culture of Key West — whose native residents proudly call themselves “conchs” after the mollusk used in many island dishes. Seafood and Cuban-influenced treats by Chef David Fuhrman of Great Events Catering, fine wines andentertainment by The Fabulous Spectrelles characterize the gala in the garden of Key West’s Oldest House Museum, 322 Duval St. 
 
“Entree” highlights Jan. 24 include exclusive tasting strolls in Key West’s Bahama Village and Mallory Square neighborhoods, a class revealing how to make the Florida Keys’ signature Key lime pie, and a savory grilled cheese and beer tasting. 
 
Friday’s schedule stars the “Sunset on the Ingham” Grand Tasting aboard the historic U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Samuel D. Ingham, launched in 1936 and now a military museum moored at Key West’s Truman Waterfront Park. Attendees can enjoy notable vintages, island-inspired light bites from Small Chef at Large Catering, entertainment by jazz singer Libby York and a chance to enjoy Key West’s world-renowned sunset from the deck of the venerable vessel. 
 
Festival attendees can find a mile of temptations Saturday, Jan. 26, at Old Town Uncorked X 10, a sipping and shopping stroll down Key West’s renowned Duval Street. Attractions at the 2-5 p.m. event include “intoxicating” forays into galleries and boutiques. 
 
Saturday evening, a paella cook-off is to take place at the Truman Little White House, 111 Front St., where former President Harry Truman spent nearly six months while in office. The annual event supports the preservation of the property — now Florida’s only presidential museum — and includes unlimited wine tasting, cigars and live music. 
 
The festival also features an interactive blind tasting event focusing on Key West’s culinary culture and history. Staged at a secret location by event designer Francesca DeFranchis, the guided sensory experience features a six-course tasting menu and nine wines.  
 
Other festival attractions include a tropical garden tour and tasting, the “Red Socks at Rock House” spectacular featuring Eduardo’s Table, a lavish shrimp feast in the Key West Historic Seaport and the “Brunch Bucket List” series.

Chef Claudia at Vallarta Nayarit Gastronomica

Puerto Vallarta will continue celebrating its Centennial with another event of international importance when it hosts the 10th annual edition of the Vallarta-Nayarit Gastronomica scheduled to take place from October 14 -18. With over 48 of the most important international chefs, including 8 Michelin-awarded chefs, Puerto Vallarta is ready to reaffirm its position as Mexico’s Culinary Beach
Destination.

Under the slogan: Mexico, thanks for so much!, Vallarta Nayarit Gastronomica will be a combination of activities and events taking place all around food. Cooking demonstrations, classes and a trade exhibition will take place at the Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta and private gala dinners including one celebrating the career of Mexican chef Susana Palazuelos. Puerto Vallarta’s iconic Malecon will set the stage for the event’s first event on the 14 with its Centennial Reception.

In addition to participating international chefs, Puerto Vallarta will be well represented by Chef Raúl Altamirano and Chef Santiago Pérez, Hotel Sheraton; Chef Memo Wulff, Rest. Barrio Bistro, Chef Alex Gómez, Jardín Nebulosa and Chef Joel Ornelas, Rest. Tintoque, all of whom will be taking part in special classes or hosting events for participants.

Javier Aranda Pedrero, General Director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board, said he was pleased to receive this type of international event, which reflects the great culinary amalgam, excellent service, attention and hospitality of the people of Vallarta, who continue to position the port city as the best option for gastronomic events.

Vallarta Nayarit Gastronómica will have invited guests from Chihuahua and Guanajuato, who will participate with renowned chefs. In addition, thanks to the significant growth of Guadalajara in the gastronomic sphere due to the diversity of its cuisine and the traditional dishes it has, it has been chosen as the guest city of this edition.

Participating chefs include eight from Michelin -awarded restaurants in Spain: Chef Ángel León (3 MICHELIN Stars and 3 Repsol Suns) Aponiente Restaurant, Cádiz; Chef Andoni Luis Aduriz (2 MICHELIN Stars and 3 Repsol Suns), Mugaritz Restaurant, Gipuzkoa; Chef Kiko Moya (2 MICHELIN Stars and 3 Repsol Suns) L´Escaleta Restaurant; Chef Diego Guerrero (2 MICHELIN Stars and 3 Repsol Suns) Dstage Restaurant; Chef Kisco García (1 MICHELIN Star and 2 Repsol Suns) Choco Restaurant; Chef Diego Gallegos (1 MICHELIN Star and 1 Repsol Sun) Sollo Restaurant; Chef Roberto Ruiz (1 MICHELIN Star and 2 Repsol Suns) Punto Mx Restaurant and Chef Paco Méndez (1 MICHELIN Star and 1 Repsol Sun) Hoja Santa and Niño Viejo Restaurant.

From the United States, the conference will host Chef Carlos Gaytán, the first Mexican chef to achieve a MICHELIN Star for his work at Mexique Restaurant in Chicago and Chef Marc Pauvert, Hotel Four Seasons, Baltimore – USA. In addition, the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board will be hosting MasterChef US Season 6 Winner and Master Chef Latino Judge Chef Claudia.

The City of New York had a Bermuda Style Session which left a lasting impression. The essence of Bermuda was captured throughout the interior and decor of the locale. Floral pattern seating coupled with pops of pineapples alongside of tropical wallpaper, featuring their iconic fruit.

The ambiance was set with a skillful mix of throwbacks, Soca and Bermudian classics. And, DJ Damon DeGraff really worked the turntables! The music persuaded attendees to two-step, yet tranquil enough to hold a conversation. The guests consisted of the following: Bermuda Tourism Authority; Bermudian, Creative Artist and Sip & Stroke instructor Alshante Foggo; natives displaying their brands and the honorable Bermuda Minister of Tourism and Economic Development, Mr. Jahmal Simmons.

This event threw a great reflection on their culture. The 24-mile long island has an immense sense of fashion, music and adventure for tourist engagement.

Following their broadcast debut performance of “Don’t Make Me Wait” on the Grammys live from New York City’s Madison Square Garden, Sting & Shaggy also performed their new single at the NFL’s Superbowl Tailgate event that aired on NBC this past Sunday.

“Don’t Make Me Wait” – the new, Caribbean-flavored song from Sting and Shaggy – was released on January 25th and will be followed by a collaborative, island-influenced album, entitled 44/876, on April 20th.
