5 Best Sports Activities for Students

With the lure of electronic activities like playing computer games and surfing the net that don’t require physical exercise, students may miss out on an opportunity to socialize, keep healthy and boost their brainpower. 

Sports activities will relieve your stress, help you to sleep better, control your weight, improve your mood and give you more energy. Universities and colleges usually have many traditional sports teams, but there are many other sports activities on campus that cater to all types of individuals and levels of expertise, from complete novices to the very sporty.

Here are various sports for students, some more conventional and others a little more unusual. 

Traditional sports

The most popular sports for students are usually traditional ones like football, basketball, volleyball and softball. Students who begin playing these sports in high school often continue in college. The average university sponsors at least twenty different sports. 

Playing team sports not only allows you to become fit but has many other benefits too. Sharing fun and special moments, socialization, making new friends and developing teamwork skills are all part of playing in a team. 

Playing a team sport allows you to pick up a number of soft skills, too, such as time management and strategic thinking. Showing you could play a team sport without affecting your studies, or that you could take a responsible role, such as captain, will impress future employees. 

Taking a break from your studies to play a team sport will help to keep your mind focused and alert because exercise increases the blood flow to your brain.  

Solo sports

There are many great ways to spend time exercising on your own. Swimming is one solo sport that offers a low-impact full-body workout. You can schedule it whenever you have the time and an hour of swimming will burn calories and give you some good aerobic exercise. Running, walking and strength training are other enjoyable solo sports.

As a student, you have a heavy workload and you often need to make a concerted effort to fit exercise into your program. You can even engage in an intensive cardio workout right in your dorm room to save time. 

There are many Pilates and yoga videos on YouTube that will give you a good workout. If you’re not into traditional sports, college is the place where you’re likely to find some unusual clubs. You could find an unusual club where you’ll meet people with similar interests to you. 

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you may be tickled to play Quidditch which has made its way from fiction into our muggle world. Players may not ride on brooms but the game can be highly entertaining. Roller Derby is another full-contact sport played on wheels by both men and women. 

If you’ve always wondered what Underwater Hockey or Disc Golf (Frolf) must be like to play, now’s your chance. Parkour is another unusual sport that requires quick reflexes and stamina to overcome obstacles and the environment, simply by using your body.

To find out what’s available at your school, check the student organizations page on the website and you’ll be amazed at how many diverse opportunities a school may have to offer.  University life can be stressful, with heavy workloads and pressure to meet deadlines for assignments. If you don’t find ways to relieve the pressure, you will find it difficult to cope. 

Sports activities provide the perfect outlet, keep your brain and body healthy and offer you the opportunity to make friends, conquer physical challenges and much more. Finding the right balance between your studies and other activities can be a challenge, but it is important if you want to be able to look back on an enjoyable and memorable university experience.

Returning this year for his 8th consecutive year, Michael’s collection was one that incorporated both inspiration from street artists and the colorful and exciting motif that has always been true to the Tumbler and Tipsy brand.

Michael displayed his collection to a full house with the assistance of close celebrity friends and associates including musical act Xuitcasecity, transgender icon and international model Amanda Lepore, Mirai Nagasu (Olympian Figure Skater and US Figure Staking Champion), Dalilah Muhammad (2016 Olympic Gold Medalist) as well as international Brazilian influencers Alex Mapeli, Gustavo Rocha and Tulio Rocha (14 Million followers on Instagram combined).

Celebrity guests who were in attendance include Savannah Kennick (“Arrested Development”) Skye Tunes, Broderick Hunter, D’Andra Simmons (“The Real Housewives of Dallas”) Jennifer Lynn DeCllis (Miss New Jersey) and more.

In addition to the street style collaborations, Michael Kuluva designed a special line with CLIQ Jewelry. n 2016 and in collaboration with CreakyJoints®, the digital, patient-driven arthritis community, Michael spoke out about his experience with Rheumatoid Arthritis and has now prepared a special accessory line for Tumbler and Tipsy consisting of jewelry with CLIQ technology. CLIQ Jewelry, a Philadelphia-based jewelry manufacturer, understands that traditional rings must be large enough to pass over the knuckle, causing them to twist, turn and slip off. Stuttgart Beer Festival

This September, Stuttgart is celebrating a bicentennial double jubilee: 200 years of the Stuttgart Beer Festival along with 100 years of the Agricultural Show. The city will commemorate the founding of these two biggest festivals in the state by King Wilhelm I of Württemberg and his consort, Queen Katharina, with the Historic Volksfest that will start a few days before the agriculture and beer festivals. All of the merriment for the Historical Festival will take place on the Palace Square in the center of Stuttgart surrounded by the New and Old Palaces whereas the modern day beer festival and the agricultural festival, will be celebrated on the Canstatter Wasen, once a grassy plain not far from the city center.

On 28th September 1818, the day after the king’s 36th birthday, he founded the first agricultural show to strengthen and reform the region’s farming industry, which had been severely affected by the eruption of the volcano on the island of Sumbawa in today’s Tambora. This volcano had a big impact on Europe and resulted in the “year without a summer,” when gasses and ash caused climate changes leading to crop failures and famine in southern Germany.

The fact that 2018 is the 173rd and not the 200th anniversary of this merry traditional festival is easily explained: by order of King Karl, the Wasen was held only biennially from 1882 onwards, and this continued up to the king’s death in 1891. This, along with the repercussions of the two World Wars, resulted in Stuttgart having to go without its festival for 28 years in all.

Every four years, the agricultural festival still takes place and runs parallel to the beer festival on the Canstatter Wasen. These days, the LWH is the biggest agriculture and forestry show in southern Germany. This year, from 29 September to 7 October 2018, Stuttgart will again be transformed into Baden-Württemberg’s biggest farm. It will include a multitude of topics to do with nutrition, animals, sustainability and agriculture.

Starting on September 26, the Historical Volksfest will be the real draw this jubilee year as it will be a nostalgic view down memory lane for the locals and offer a unique look at Stuttgart’s past for the visitors. History will be the dominant feature of the celebratory Volksfest on Stuttgart main square, the Schlossplatz. Visitors can look forward to a colorful mixture of activities with fairground attractions and rides from times past, including jugglers, acrobats, old traditional crafts and farm animals. Two avenues will include fairground amusements that will be split up into the 19th and 20th century styles.

An exhibition showing the history of the local Swabian people’s biggest festival will take place around the Jubilee Column while King Wilhelm I and his wife Katharina, played by amateur actors dressed in historical garb, will make regular appearances. A festival tent with about 1,000 seats will be a focal point along with a dance floor, traditional dances and bands performing in historical clothes. Classical dishes of the era such as “Metzelsuppe,” a sausage soup, sauerkraut, boiled beef and fish on sticks, will be served with a jubilee beer made by the Stuttgart breweries, Stuttgarter Hofbräu and Familienbrauerei Dinkelacker.

Just two days later, the contemporary beer festival (often referred to as the Canstatter Wasen) gets underway! On the last Friday in September, the 28th of September, the seven beer tents, the two wine tents and the Alpine Village will open their doors to the public and the fairground rides will get under way. Round about the Fruit Column, the historic symbol of the traditional festival, 330 showmen, hosts and stallholders have a wide variety on offer. A double-looping roller coaster, autoscooters or Chair-O-Planes: modern attractions or old favourites – they’re all here at the Wasen. Hearty dishes such as grilled knuckle of pork, fried steak or Swabian “Maultaschen” (filled pasta) are served to go with the mugs of beer.

Canstatter Wasen is a benefit to Stuttgart’s economy not only for tourism but also for the local trades. Traders’ markets have a long tradition in Stuttgart and were part of the original foundation of the beer festival as the traveling tracers brought stayed to sell their goods. Even though times have changed, traders’ markets have remained and are a permanent and much-loved part of the beer festival on the Cannstatter Wasen. Visitors will also be given an insight into traditional craftsmen’s and traders’ markets showing old crafts, such as brush and basket making. In addition, household goods made of wood and other natural materials will be on sale.

As the second largest beer festival in the world after Oktoberfest, the Canstatter Wasen attracts approximately four million visitors including more than 20,000 Volksfest club members (former German emigrants and their families) from New York, Philadelphia and Chicago who regularly visit the Cannstatter Volksfest to affirm and renew their ties of friendship with Stuttgart. Benefitting from the festival are not the visitors but also bakers, butchers, suppliers, the service industry, the retail trade, hotels, transport companies and lots more businesses. According to a market survey, approximately 17,000 people are directly or indirectly involved in the Cannstatter Volksfest.

Mojo Nomad Central

Mojo Nomad Central – a ground-breaking concept designed to turn the traditional hotel model on its head- will open this September on Queens Road Central in the heart of Hong Kong. The property is the second to open from the Mojo Nomad brand, Hong Kong’s first hotel concept with shared working spaces, and a member of the Ovolo Hotels group.

The Untitled Space is pleased to present “DEFINING FORM,” a group exhibition of contemporary artists exploring 2 and 3-dimensional sculpture opening on July 11, 2018 and on view through August 1st, 2018. Curated by Indira Cesarine, “DEFINING FORM” takes a comprehensive look at the manifestations of contemporary sculpture today, engaging a dialogue of the narratives resonating amongst sculptors through works in mediums such as metal, stone, clay, wood, glass, textiles, recycled and repurposed materials, as well as mixed media.

DEFINING FORM presents figurative and abstract works by over 50 emerging and established artists. The group show investigates progressive themes in sculpture, including contemporary feminism, gender identity and political art, as well as new technologies in digital sculpture, with an emphasis on originality and innovative usage of materials. Technological advances in fabrication and digital sculpture have had a massive impact on the art form over the past few decades. Classic techniques such as chiseling stone and casting in bronze have shifted towards new technologies such as 3-D printing, materials such as silicone, plastics, and textiles as well as found, recycled and re-purposed materials. The domination of large-scale works has given way to delicate and intimate pieces as well as a wave of sculptural installations that deconstruct notions of space and form. Artists are pushing the boundaries of the art form integrating components of sound, video, light and performance as well as painting, photography and other mediums.

As the art form evolves in new directions with the impact of contemporary culture, it has transcended from the conventional portrait to works that challenge the status quo, address gender identity and racial stereotypes, LGBTQ ideologies and queer constructs, explore themes of the resistance movement as well as progressive feminist narratives and activism. Exhibit DEFINING FORM presents the new narrative of sculpture with works that interrogate ideologies of the art form, pushing forward experimental works that engage all of our senses and ignite fresh dialogues.

“What is sculpture today? I invited artists of all genders and generations to present their most innovative 2 and 3-dimensional sculptures for consideration for DEFINING FORM. After reviewing more than 600 artworks, I selected sculptures by over 50 artists that reflect new tendencies in the art form. DEFINING FORM artists defy stereotypes with inventive works that tackle contemporary culture. Traditionally highly male dominated, I was inspired by the new wave of female sculptors making their mark with works engaging feminist narratives. The artworks in DEFINING FORM explode with new ideas, vibrant colors, and display a thoroughly modern sensibility through fearless explorations of the artists and unique usage of innovative materials ranging from fabric, plastic, and foam to re-purposed and found objects including chewing gum, trash and dirt. Recycled materials are celebrated along with works engaging new digital technologies. The exhibit displays works that are politically charged, contrasted with those full of satire and humor. In the investigation of new tendencies, I felt it was important to juxtapose figurative works with the abstract, new materials with the classics, creating an immersive exhibit that defines new trends in sculpture and contemporary constructs of the art form.” – Indira Cesarine

Antonique Smith Stars in Marvel/Netflix Series

Actress, Activist and Grammy Nominated Singer, Songwriter Antonique Smith is one of the new stars in season 2 of Marvel’s Luke Cage on Netflix. Smith has an eight episode arc in the hit series playing Detective Nandi Tyler. Is Nandi, a rival of Misty Knight, a friend or foe of Luke Cage? The highly anticipated return of the show premiered worldwide to rave reviews on June 22nd.
The action drama stars Mike Colter as Luke Cage, a Harlem-based superhero with super strength and bulletproof skin. The cast also includes Alfre Woodard, Simone Missick,Theo Rossi, Mahershala Ali, Gabrielle Dennis, Mustafa Shakir and Rosario Dawson.
Luke Cage is created and executive produced by Cheo Hodari Coker and co-executive produced by Aida Croal, Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.
On Sunday night, Netflix launched the Strong Black Lead campaign. The campaign features Antonique amongst other black actors, writers, show runners, and producers on Netflix and in Hollywood. The plan for the spot, which debuted during the BET Awards, and the “A Great Day In Hollywood” campaign image stemmed from Netflix’s Strong Black Lead initiative designed to foster an “ongoing, intentional focus to talk authentically with the black audience.”

No culinary stoned unturned in this annual lineup, which spans a salute to the Lodge’s annual lavender harvest to an evening of sheer decadence focused on the world’s top treasures. Back by popular demand, chef Cal Stamenov’s 4th Annual Craftsmen Exchange (October 27) delivers a culinary cache of local artisans, cheese mongers and fungi foragers for a convivial afternoon. 

 

EPICUREAN PLAYGROUND

Carmel Valley is a unique microclimate delivering optimum conditions for growing grapes, lavender, fruit and a litany of obscure herbs and vegetables. Tucked into 28 fragrant acres of lavender, olive orchards and vineyards with sweeping Santa Lucia Range views, Bernardus Lodge & Spa savors the seasons with an enviable larder of on-property organic gardens paired with a back pocket of foragers, farmers and fishermen answering chef Cal’s call. Back by popular demand, this festive event begins with a welcome reception on the Harvest Terrace with live music and Southern inspired specialty cocktails hosted by Lost Spirits. Then step into the Harvest Room Exhibition Kitchen by Sub-Zero and Wolf as Chef Cal takes a spin on comfort food with smoked Wagyu brisket and organic fried chicken showcased in three distinct styles paired with select wines from the award-winning cellar. Seating is limited and reservations are required.
