How did Tom Brady become the man he is today?


In this preview clip from Wednesday’s inaugural In the Room special, the decorated NFL star, loving husband and father of three tells host Jason Kennedy he didn’t do it alone.


“There’s a lot of important people in my life,” Brady says, crediting early role models—his parents and three sisters—for keeping him grounded from a young age. The football icon’s present focus on family life feels like proof those influences have indeed left their mark, but they weren’t the only ones.


“I think every person I’ve been around, I’ve learned something from,” he explains, with an air of wisdom perhaps siphoned from one or several of those “great” individuals.
And though Brady’s record-breaking career and enviable personal life certainly suggests he’s collected all the right lessons along the way, the six-time Super Bowl champion believes there’s always more room to grow.


“I try to do the best I can do. And I’m certainly not perfect,” the athlete continues, noting areas of his work and home life that he wants “to try to do better at.” Like most human beings juggling passion, profession, parenthood and partnership, the scope of Brady’s responsibilities are vast. But he does what he can to prioritize.


“I try to keep my priorities in line, you know?” Brady finishes, saying his children, 10-year marriage to Gisele Bündchen and victory-laden run with the New England Patriots take precedence.


“All those things have their nuances and their challenges,” he acknowledges. “But if you’re committed to ’em and you prioritize ’em, then you figure out how to make ’em work.”

In Wake of NFL Post-Season Controversies Public Wants Rule Changes for Pass Interference and OT

Nation also ‘tired’ of seeing Patriots in Super Bowl; thinks legalized gambling can lead to scandal

By an overwhelming margin, the public wants instant replay for judgment calls such as pass interference, according to a Seton Hall Sports Poll conducted this week.

Asked if replay review should be allowed for judgment calls like pass interference, 82% said yes, with only 10% saying no and the rest having no opinion or saying they did not know.

Among those who said they followed the sport closely, even more, 89%, said yes, while only 7% said no.

Even among the respondents who said they follow the NFL very closely, 85% said yes, they “think instant replay review should be allowed for judgment calls like pass interference.” Among that group of very close followers, however, 13% said “no.”

Regarding overtime possession rules, a majority of respondents polled said that each team should get at least one possession in overtime: 58% said that both teams should have the ball, with only 33% saying the rule (a touchdown on first possession ends the game), should be left alone.

The poll received 985 adult responses across the country, using both landlines and cellphones, with a margin of error of +/- 3.2%.

“In the NFL’s championship games, referee calls and non-calls made a very big difference,” noted Rick Gentile, director of the poll, which is sponsored by the Sharkey Institute of the Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall. “And in some ways, Kansas City’s offense never getting a chance to take the field in overtime was anticlimactic – never a good thing in the entertainment business, and something the NFL may want to pay attention to along with the overwhelming support for instant replay review for judgment calls such as pass interference.”

Nation ‘Tired’ of Patriots

Perhaps the overtime rules wouldn’t have seemed so unfair if the Kansas City Chiefs hadn’t been playing the New England Patriots, who have made their way to the Super Bowl four out of the past five years.

Nearly half of Americans say they are tired of seeing the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

46% said they were tired of seeing them, with only 25% saying their appearance would make the game more interesting.

Among those who follow the NFL closely or very closely, the number rose to 62% who are tired of seeing them against only 27% who thought their appearance would make the game more interesting.

Tom Brady

The numbers are not very good for New England quarterback Tom Brady either, whose favorable rating has fallen to only 29% after a high of 61% in February 2015, when the Poll first asked about him. That was before the penalty for “Deflategate” was instituted, and his favorable rating fell to 34% by that October.

Brady’s favorable rating was only 24% among women and 35% among men. While the overall rating is 29% favorable to 23% unfavorable, among those that follow the NFL closely it is even.

Bill Belichick

Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick had only a 20% favorable rating in this poll, about even with his standing in October of 2015 in the wake of “Deflategate.”

“Despite his brilliance on the field, it appears the effects of ‘Deflategate’ and the suggestion that Brady was a cheater may linger for the remainder of his career,” noted Director Gentile, “As for ‘Patriots Fatigue’ it will be interesting to see how it effects the ratings.”

Legal Sports Betting

Meanwhile, as legalized sports betting begins a growth period on a state-by-state basis, Americans had a strong feeling that it will inevitably lead to scandal. Asked if they believe legal betting can lead to cheating or fixing of games by players, 81% said yes, and 79% said it can lead to cheating or fixing of games by referees or umpires.

What is music to a network ear however, is that 71% say they would be more likely to watch a broadcast of a game on which they bet. Even better news is by more than 5 to 1, people 18-29 are more inclined to watch a game they bet on. This is similar with Seton Hall Sports Poll’s finding when the question was first asked last fall.

46% said they were “tired” of seeing them, with only 25% finding their appearance making the game “more interesting.”

  • New research from PlayUSA finds the players who give more bang for their buck.

  • Salary to performance ratio finds Dallas Cowboys’ QB Dak Prescott to be the most cost-effective QB, with a cost of $28,902 per touchdown.

  • Survey finds Tom Brady to be the most ‘overvalued’ player in the league, according to fans.

The astronomical salaries of sports stars across the world is constantly under the scrutiny of fans and the media, and none more so than the National Football League (NFL). The income that sports like these gather means that their players are inevitably paid huge sums for their service, but is this reflected by their performance?

PlayUSA have compared the key stats for every NFL player with their wages to find the most cost-effective players. From the amount Eli Manning is paid per touchdown pass to the price of every sack DeMarcus Lawrence makes for the Cowboys, this interactive tool shows it all. Our research has also compiled each teams statistics to determine how well the most and least frugal teams perform.

Quarterbacks

In our survey, Aaron Rodgers and Eli Manning were top when asked who the ‘unsung’ heroes of the league were, but who were last season’s most cost-efficient QBs?

  • Cost-Effective Cowboys – Dak Prescott threw for an impressive 22 touchdowns in an otherwise unimpressive season for the Cowboys. His low salary gave him a score of $28,902 per touchdown.
  • Unsung Rodgers? With a salary exceeding $20 million, Packers’ Aaron Rodgers isn’t as undervalued as fans think, costing over $1.2 million per touchdown.

Wide Receivers

This season, Odell Beckham has become the highest paid wide-receiver, but in an injury-plagued season for Beckham, which receiver gave teams the most value?

  • Runaway Robby – New York Jets receiver Robby Anderson’s 7 touchdowns at a cost of $77,619 per score makes him the most cost-effective wide-receiver in the league.
  • High score Hopkins – No player got close to the Texans’ scorecard in 2017, but with a salary of $18 million, his cost-to-performance ranks worse than his peers.
  • Frivolous Falcons – Often considered as the best wide-receiver in the league, Julio Jones made more yards than any player, but made a mere 3 touchdowns at a cost of $4.6 million per score.

Tight Ends

Fans often regard the likes of Rob Gronkowski and Greg Olsen as the league’s best tight-ends, but who offers the best return on investment?

  • Cash-cow Kroft – Bengals tight-end Tyler Kroft made 7 touchdowns from 42 of his receptions last season, and with a modest salary he ranks as the most cost-effective TE.
  • Million Dollar Man – Jimmy Graham’s 10 touchdowns last year for the Seahawks gave him a cost-per-score ratio of $1 million.

Running Backs

For the league’s running backs, we’ve compared salary to both touchdowns and yards per game to find the most economical throughout the league.

  • The Saint of New Orleans – With an impressive 13 touchdowns and 45.5 yards on average per game, Alvin Kamara comes out as the most cost efficient RB in the league.
  • The Price of Ivory – With only 2 touchdowns all year, Jaguars’ Chris Ivory ranks as the least cost-effective with a value of nearly $3 million.

Defensive

Linebackers (OLB/ILB)

Defense will almost always be considered as the true unsung heroes of the sport, but who’s cheap salary and high performance has gone under the radar?

  • Big Tackling Burgess – Cleveland Browns Linebackers James Burgess cost his team less than any other, with a cost-per-tackle score of $10,568 for the season.
  • Tackling Teammates – Fellow Browns’ star Chris Kirksey made a mammoth 86 tackles last season, but his $5 million salary means he’s not as cost-effective as his colleague.

Defensive Backs (Safety/Cornerbacks)

Much of the work of the defensive backs goes unseen, but without them many teams would be at a loss. These are the players that do their utmost to earn their keep:

  • Top scorer across the board – Kevin Byard of the Tennessee Titans outperforms everyone in the strong safety rankings, with the most interceptions (8) and the lowest cost per action score. $105,354.
  • Leading the Charge – Los Angeles Chargers free-safety Tre Boston made 56 tackles and 5 interceptions last year, making him one of the most cost-effective defensive players in the ranks.

Defensive Line

Defensive ends and tackles are typically some of the biggest and strongest men in the sport, but who among them pulls their weight in terms of performance.

  • Sack City – Jaguars defensive-end Yannick Ngakoue made 12 sacks and 24 tackles putting him in one of the top spots for return on investment in the defensive line.
  • Defensive Dallas – Cowboy’s defensive tackle David Irving brings home a comparatively low salary of $470,000, completing 7 sacks, 13 tackles and 1 forced fumble in the regular season.

Specialists

If any aspect of the game is truly overlooked, it’s the special teams. These positions can often win games, but at what cost?

  • Bolting in Baltimore – Ravens Kick-return Alex Collins averages 27.4 yards on every return which, when compared against his salary, comes at the price of $18,549 per average yard.

  • The Kansas Kicker – Harrison Butker boasts a strong field goal % with 38 made out of 42 and ranks as the most cost-effective kicker in our ranks.

The study found that 81% of fans believe that better performance warrants better pay, and while some teams seem to be stepping up to the mark, others are lagging behind. You can find how your favourite team or player score in the interactive tool here.

Underdogs to Top Dogs – Super Bowl LII

As 50 Cent once said, “hate it or love it, the underdogs on top.”

The Philadelphia Eagles triumphed over the New England Patriots in February 4th in Minneapolis, Minnesota and took home the Vince Lombardi trophy for the first time in franchise history.

The Eagles dominated the beginning of the season, with sophomore quarterback, Carson Wentz, throwing 33 touchdown passes in the first 12 games, a new single-season record for the Eagles. However, the team suffered a devastating blow in December when Wentz tore his ACL in a match against the Los Angeles Rams in December. His backup, Nick Foles, was able to lead the team to a win in the fourth quarter of the game, but with 3 games left in the season, the team no longer had its superstar and many lost hope.

Despite being the number 1 seed in the NFC, the Eagles were named the underdogs for the Divisional Round, a title in which they embraced. Players took the field wearing dog masks, inspiring fans to do the same. Cries of “Dilly Dilly” echoed through the stadium as the Eagles beat the Falcons 15-10 and went on to destroy the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship.

In the team’s third Super Bowl appearance, the Eagles faced off against the New England Patriots, which meant that Nick Foles, the Eagles backup who had considered retirement after his 2016 release from the Rams, was taking on one of the greatest NFL players of all time, five-time Super Bowl winner, Tom Brady.

No one anticipated an Eagles victory. Well, no one except for the team’s devoted fans.

I grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia in southern New Jersey that is only a fifteen minute drive from Lincoln Financial Stadium. I was born into a family of super-fans; I could spell Eagles by the time I was 2-years-old. Throughout my 22 years, I have attended countless Eagles games, most of which ended in my dad’s frustration. Despite the team’s continued poor performance over the years, fans like my dad remained loyal and patient.

My dad, has stuck by the Eagles for all 66 years of his life. At 8-years-old, I attended the Super Bowl in 2005 with my family and watched the Patriots had defeated the Eagles 24-21. Going into Super Bowl LII my dad was cautiously optimistic. I had the privilege of attending the February 4th game with my family. Although the game took place in Minneapolis, over 1,000 miles away from Philadelphia, it looked and sounded as if it were a home game. The stadium was a sea of green. Crowds were chanting “E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles!” and singing the Eagles fight song all throughout the game. Sure, we may have a bad rep, but there is a certain camaraderie that comes with being an Eagles fan. The fan base can best be described as a family, a very loud family.

The Eagles were the first on the scoreboard, nabbing a field goal early in the first quarter. The Patriots responded with a field goal of their own, but Philadelphia fired back with a 34-yard pass that resulted in the first touchdown of the game. The lead was maintained for the remainder of the game with the Patriots trailing closely behind. At halftime, the score was 22-12.

Justin Timberlake took the field for his halftime performance that received mixed reviews. The “Filthy” singer danced through the crowd, and transitioned smoothly through his greatest hits. In the days leading up to the game, there were various rumors regarding who would be his guest performer. One controversial speculation hinted that Timberlake was planning to honor the late Minneapolis native, Prince, by using a holographic image of the singer. Prince had expressed during his lifetime that disapproved of holographic tributes to dead celebrities and his family tweeted out that they did not consent to the use of Prince’s image in that manner. Rather than a hologram, Timberlake honored Prince by projecting a video onto a large sheet in a way that was reminiscent to Prince’s 2007 Super Bowl halftime show. The sea of green transformed as the wristbands and finger flashlights given to Super Bowl goers illuminated purple. Following Timberlake’s show, Prince’s family tweeted a thumbs up emoji, signaling their approval.

With the second half underway, the intensity of the game picked up. Players from both teams understood what the victory would mean. For the Patriots, it would mark the continuation of a dynasty. For the Eagles, they would be bringing the win home to a city of devoted fans that have waited decades for the title. In the fourth quarter, the Patriots managed to pull ahead by a single point – 33-32 – with 9 minutes left in the game. Tight End, Zach Ertz, caught a pass at the 6-yard line, took three steps, and dove into the end zone with 2:55 left on the clock. Ertz’s wife, Julie Johnson Ertz, a soccer player on the U.S. Women’s National Team and World Cup champion, was at the game to witness her husband’s game winning play.

I was lucky enough to have met Julie Ertz before the game. She was sitting with a friend in the same section that I was in and had been nice enough to take a photo with me. The pair, who many have been describing as #relationshipgoals, may hold the title for the world’s most athletic couple. With two separate championships under their belts, it is undeniable that they are extremely talented people. Their support for one another has been well documented. A video of Julie’s reaction, as she had been unable to attend the NFC championship due having to play in a game with her own team, to hearing that the Eagles had made the Super Bowl went viral. A subsequent video of Zach tearing up when shown his wife’s reaction surfaced, causing them to be one of America’s favorite duos. 

In the final few seconds of the game, Brady, desperate not to lose his MVP status, threw an impressive Hail Mary pass into the end zone but it was knocked down. The crowd erupted as green and white confetti was shot into the air. The Eagles had managed to pull off one of the greatest upsets of all time.

Foles, who threw for three touchdowns and caught another on Sunday, was awarded MVP. He became the first backup quarterback to win MVP since Brady himself had accepted the honor in 2001.

The celebratory parade is scheduled for this Thursday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Lexus Releases Extended Version of Super Bowl Spot with Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther

As announced earlier this month, Lexus will once again be participating in advertising’s biggest day of the year with a commercial in Super Bowl LII on Sunday, Feb. 4. Today, the brand has released a 60-second extended digital version of the ad, which was created in partnership with Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated film “Black Panther,” opening in U.S. theaters Feb. 16. The spot, “Long Live the King,” pairs the flagship luxury performance sedan 2018 Lexus LS 500 F SPORT with the Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman, and can be viewed here. A 30-second version of the ad will air during the third quarter of the Super Bowl.

The high-impact story in “Long Live the King” revolves around the character of T’Challa in his role as Black Panther recovering stolen vibranium, the mythical ore found only in the Black Panther’s home of Wakanda, and his nearly simultaneous need to represent his country as king at a world leadership conference. The Lexus LS 500 F SPORT is the only vehicle both powerful and luxurious enough to keep pace with a Super Hero and escort a king. With appearances by the country’s elite bodyguards, the Dora Milaje, and unexpected help from Wakanda, “Long Live the King” will engage fans of the Super Bowl and “Black Panther” alike. The Lexus LC 500 luxury performance coupe used in the film also has a cameo.

“There is an authentic match between the duality of both the Black Panther and the LS. The spot utilizes the Black Panther’s life as a Super Hero and as royalty to show the two sides of the LS: performance and luxury,” said Cooper Ericksen, Lexus vice president of marketing. “The stars aligned for this Super Bowl spot, with Lexus launching our flagship sedan and audiences primed for Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated release ‘Black Panther.’ Uniting LS with Black Panther on advertising’s biggest stage was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up.”

The song “Legend Has It” by Run the Jewels, with its driving beats and “step into the spotlight” lyric, provides the perfect soundtrack for the action as the Black Panther and the LS 500 F SPORT make their thrilling debuts. The song, also used in the first trailer for the film, is from the album “Run the Jewels 3,” which debuted at # 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for the physical release.

“This spot feels beautifully cinematic from start to finish,” said Mindy Hamilton, Marvel’s senior vice president of global partnerships and marketing. “With a character as important as Black Panther and a brand as iconic as Lexus, we knew that we had to rise to the occasion by creating something unforgettable. It’s a climactic moment for all of us as we come together to celebrate this wonderful collaboration and enjoy the big game.”

“Long Live the King,” directed by Samuel Bayer, incorporates actual footage from the film-notably, of Letitia Wright as T’Challa’s sister, Shuri-and features many of the film’s actors, including the Dora Milaje team of Wakandan special forces: Janeshia Adams-Ginyard, Marija Abney and Zola Williams. The ad was shot using only original costumes and gear from the film, including the Black Panther/King T’Challa outfits, Dora Milaje battle suits and vibranium canisters. Even the film’s fight choreographer, Jonathan (JoJo) Eusebio, was engaged to stage the spot’s fight scene. It features VFX work by Luma, the studio who created Black Panther’s suit FX for the film. The ad was shot in downtown L.A. at night using a custom lighting unit.

The Super Bowl spot is part of a robust collaboration between Lexus and Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther.” It includes the exclusive “Black Panther”-themed event at Comic-Con International: San Diego after-hours last July, and an original graphic novel created with Marvel Custom Solutions titled “Black Panther: Soul of a Machine” introduced at Comic-Con. The entire graphic novel is available to read now online. In October, ahead of SEMA, Lexus unveiled a 2018 limited-edition LC Inspiration Series production car available for purchase in Spring 2018, and a custom concept coupe dubbed the Black Panther Inspired LC. In addition, a co-branded Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” Lexus TV spot debuted Jan. 22. Lexus’ collaboration with Marvel Studios and the creation of the two spots are being executed by Lexus’ multicultural agency, Walton Isaacson.

This marks the fourth time Lexus has appeared in the Super Bowl. “Long Live the King” follows Lexus’ 2017 Super Bowl ad “Man and Machine,” as well as spots in the 2015 and 2012 games.

Celebrity Chef Josh Capon to host National Tailgate Weekend party on October 7th at Purdue University as they take on conference rival, University of Minnesota

National Tailgate Weekend returns for another year on October 7-8, 2017. The annual holiday, which made its debut in Fall 2016, was created to give college football fans a proper platform to celebrate a favorite pastime: tailgating. In only its second year, more than 600 schools across the country are set to participate in the annual holiday. Leading up to the weekend, Chef Capon will be providing tailgating tips, sharing his favorite recipes and will host the official National Tailgate Weekend party at Purdue University as they take on conference rival, University of Minnesota.  

 
“Tailgating is truly one of my favorite things, there’s nothing better than grilling and hanging out in a parking lot before the big game or even a concert,” says Josh Capon. “Several years ago, my friends and I formed a tailgate themed fundraiser called ‘The Tailgate with a Cause,’ and we’re pleased to share that, moving forward, the charity will become the official charity of National Tailgate Weekend and we thank Learfield for their generous donation.” adds Capon.  

 
Chef Capon will share tips, recipes and demonstrations via National Tailgate Weekend’s website and social media channels.
