THE WHITE WINE EMOJI WILL NEED TO CONTINUE TO AGE

Kendall-Jackson, the iconic leader of California Chardonnay, and the dozens of other supporting wine partners will have to wait a bit longer to toast its newest wine release, a White Wine Emoji

Kendall-Jackson’s 19-page proposal for a White Wine Emoji, now in its third draft, was up for review by the Unicode Technical Committee (UTC) at their July meeting held on the Microsoft Campus in Redmond, WA.  However, the White Wine Emoji will need more time to age – official meeting notes released from the UTC states that they will, “Continue to consider ‘white wine’ emoji for future addition,” and has a UTC Action Item, 160-A43, to do precisely that.

“The debate actually centers around color, not wine,” says Maggie Curry, Director of Marketing for Kendall-Jackson.  “Since a red wine emoji already exists, the white wine emoji is seen as a color variation and adding color variation to an emoji is proving more complex because the Unicode standard is not fully defined.”  With the UTC tasked at protecting the global keyboard, the addition of white wine has to be carefully considered, as it might open the door to many emoji color variations (Rosé wine for example, shades of beer, or even different color animals).

Kendall-Jackson vows to continue leading their efforts and global movement, and are hopeful to see progress on the proposal soon.  “The white wine emoji effort has garnered enthusiasm from around the globe, and we continue to refine our proposal to support the white wine emoji,” says Maggie Curry, Director of Marketing for Kendall-Jackson. 

Kendall-Jackson is currently updating their proposal for a fourth time, adding additional research that proves white wine as a necessary addition beyond red wine for emoji communication based on global use, economy, culture and industry.   

“For example, white wine is paramount in regions such as Alto Adige with Pinot Grigio, Mosel with Riesling, and Sancerre with Sauvignon Blanc, and there is currently no way to communicate by symbol when it comes to wine in those geographies,” says Curry “What started as a fun idea has now turned into a complex effort for Kendall-Jackson, the wine community, and wine fans around the globe.”

Kendall-Jackson and their global partners encourage the wine community to continue to call for the white wine emoji by using #WhiteWineEmoji on their social channels, which is easily tracked by Unicode to show global want and need.

As Pliny the Elder once said, “In vino veritas” (in wine there is truth), and Kendall-Jackson continues to push for wine symbol color variation to convey truth in the modern wine communication zeitgeist.

Cool Down this Summer with Red Wine Cocktails

Red wine isn’t the first thing that pops into your head for summer drinking. In fact, Rosé and spritz’s take the crown as the go-to cool down sips. But, it’s incredibly versatile and a simple addition to your favorite summer refreshment. Before you realize, you be swapping out the Aperol spritz for a red wine mule.

A bourbon barrel-aged red, like 1000 Stories (SRP $18.99), makes for the perfect topper or mixer in a summer cocktail, like the ones below. The added caramel notes and a hint of smoke from the bourbon barrel make the perfect pairing for a hot day.

Gold Rush Red Mule
* 4 oz. 1000 Stories Gold Rush Red
* .5 oz. Marschino
* .5 oz. Crème de Mure
* ginger beer
* Rosemary sprig garnish
Add the wine and liqueurs to a copper mug filled with ice. Top with ginger beer and stir with a bar spoon to incorporate. Garnish with a sprig of fresh rosemary.

Prospectors’ Proof Sour
* 2 oz. Rye Whiskey
* .75 oz. lemon juice
* 1 oz. simple syrup
* .5 oz. 1000 Stories Prospectors’ Proof
Shake the rye whiskey, lemon juice and simple syrup with ice. Strain into a double old-fashioned glass and fill with fresh ice. Float red wine over the top of the cocktail.

1000 Stories Splash
* 2 oz. Partida Tequila Blanco
* 1.5 oz. 1000 Stories Zinfandel
* .5 oz. fresh lime juice
* .5 oz. agave nectar
* 2 oz. grapefruit soda
* lime wedge for garnish
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a glass.

1881 Napa Showcases Napa Valley Wines and History in Historic Victorian Home Adjacent to the Oakville Grocery

Napa Valley’s first wine history museum and tasting salon, is now open. Jean-Charles Boisset, proprietor of Boisset Collection, has created an homage to Napa Valley, with a tasting room that showcases wines from Napa Valley’s distinct sub-appellations, a museum where guests can explore Napa’s rich wine history, an extensive collection of historic wine relics from Europe and the United States and original artifacts from the Early California Wine Trade Archive. 1881 Napa is located in a historic Victorian home built in 1874 next to Oakville Grocery (founded in 1881) in Oakville, California, both of which were purchased by Boisset Collection at the beginning of the year.

“Napa Valley has a powerful place in American wine history and 1881 Napa puts the region in perspective on the world stage,” said Boisset, who grew up in Burgundy, France imbued with a passion for wine and learning as the son of vintners and the grandson of educators. “An extraordinary amount has been accomplished in this enclave in a short amount of time and we want to create a destination that celebrates Napa’s long history and its pioneering founders while exploring Napa’s incredibly diverseterroir in one destination.”

The gateway to Napa Valley, 1881 Napa is must-stop for wine enthusiasts, providing guests the opportunity to discover Napa Valley’s AVAs for the first time, or to explore some of their favorite appellations more deeply. Napa Valley was the first AVA designated in California in 1981 and within the region are 16 sub-AVAs that contain more geological diversity than any other wine region, leading to dramatically different wines within Napa Valley.

Located in a building more than 140 years old that was reimagined by renowned architect Howard Backen, 1881 Napa is next door to Oakville Grocery, the oldest continually operating grocery store in California. The two centerpieces of the space — a 48-light Baccarat crystal Zenith chandelier and a reproduction of an 1895 map of Napa County on canvas hanging from the ceiling — provide a dramatic environment to explore the varied wines of the valley, while displays highlighting the unique stories and soils of each appellation surround the tasting room.

The wine museum in 1881 Napa is open to the public with complimentary visitation. A self-guided tour up to and along the museum’s second-floor mezzanine tells the history of Napa Valley, introduces the founders and influential early pioneers  of the region and presents a robust collection of wine ephemera, including historic winemaking, vineyard, nursery and cooperage as well as displays curated and organized by the Early California Wine Trade Museum featuring local historic wine artifacts from the collections of Dean Walters and John O’Neill. From the mezzanine, guests have an open view to the tasting room below.

Alcoves hold soil samples from the various regions, along with 1881 Napa wines and descriptions of the appellations written by best-selling and award-winning author of The Wine Bible and wine expert Karen MacNeil. MacNeil also helped develop the various tasting options, which include comparative flights such as “Majestic Mountains Versus Plush Valley” and “Is it Cool to be Hot or Hot to be Cool?” as well as an option to “Embark on a Journey Throughout the Valley” by tasting Cabernet Sauvignons from 12 different sub-AVAs. In addition to the site-specific Cabs, guests can enjoy wines from a blend of Napa Valley grapes, including a sparkling wine, Sauvignon Blanc, rosé, Chardonnay, red blend, Merlot and a Cabernet Sauvignon — all wines crafted exclusively for 1881 Napa by Winemaker Thane Knutson to reflect the diversity of Napa Valley. After sampling the broad range of Napa Valley styles, guests can discover which AVAs they like the most and purchase wines from 1881 Napa as well Oakville Grocery.

Singer/songwriter Allan Rayman has just revealed his next run of live appearances, dubbed “The Allan Rayman Show.” Allan and his band will be heading to 21 cities across North America, launching in Portland, OR and making stops in major markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, Boston, San Francisco and more.

The tour will have the Toronto-based singer/songwriter back in North America after performing to captivated crowds throughout Europe this past winter. February 18th is National Drink Wine Day, which is a day each year that celebrates the love and health benefits associated with wine. According to the consulting group BW 166, wine sales in the U.S. topped $72.2 billion in 2018, which was nearly a 5 percent increase over the prior year. Clearly, we are nation that loves a good glass of wine, and the more we learn of the health benefits, the more likely more of us will add a bottle to our grocery list.

Wine enthusiasts can rejoice as they celebrate National Drink Wine Day this year, because the drink has plenty of research pointing to the fact that it’s a healthy beverage to drink in moderation. What exactly is moderation? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), moderate drinking is up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men. One drink is defined as being four ounces of wine. Further, they recommend that number is not the average consumed over a week, but the amount consumed on any given day.
Most people who enjoy having a glass of wine with their meal love the taste, but they may not be aware of the way it’s helping their body. Here are some of the many health benefits that have been associated with making wine a part of your diet:

  • Heart health The National Institutes of Health reports that studies have shown that adults who drink light to moderate amounts of alcohol may be less likely to develop heart disease than those who do not drink at all or are heavy drinkers.
  • Gut health The April 2017 issue of the journal Current Opinion in Biotechnology included the research results of a study on the health benefits of fermented foods, including wine. The study found that fermented foods, including wine, provide health benefits well beyond the starting food materials, and contain living microorganisms of which some are genetically similar to strains used as probiotics.
  • Diabetes health The April 2017 issue of the journal Endocrine reports that the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association recommend a Mediterranean diet for improving glycemic control and cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetes. It also reports that studies show that higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with a 20-23 % reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The Mediterranean diet is one that includes drinking wine in moderation.
  • Brain health Research out of the University of Rochester Medical Center in 2018 found that drinking wine in moderation was associated with reducing inflammation and helping the brain to clear away toxins, including those that are associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

“From the brain to gut to your heart, drinking a little wine has health benefits for most people,” added Helppie. “It’s nice to feel good about what you are drinking, whether with dinner, at a party, or at the beach. You can drink some wine and know you are doing your body good.”

The most posh and lux crowd of Manhattan gathered at the palatial former residence of pop icon Lady Gaga for ‘Rose Box House.’ Presented by Rose Box NYC, ‘Rose Box House’ was a chic mixer bringing together socialites, fashion influencers and VIP’s for a luxurious night of cocktails and a meeting of the best dressed. On this icy winter night in New York City, the upscale guests were dressed to kill with gorgeous winter coats and sharp head to toe outfits.

The five story urban penthouse located in Chelsea was stunningly decorated with Rose Box NYC’s signature roses, draping tables, sofas and shelves across the residence. The event space looked so rich and full of life with the arrangements of freshly cut, vibrantly colored roses in d’oeuvres. Social media blew up with the hashtag #roseboxhouse as the party guests posted selfies and mini-photo ops with the flower arrangements.
