Latinidad in American Festivals

Until recently, urbane Latin music has been scarce in mainstream American music festivals. Thus, the 2019 Coachella latino lineup is a huge deal because it’s the largest and most profitable one on the planet.

In the past, only a few latin artists have performed at the prestigious venue – Cafe Tacvba and The Mars Volta. In 2010, Calle 13 was the first urbano latino artist to hit the stage. In 2018, there were a total of 11 latin artists such as Helado Negro, Ibeyi, Los Angeles Azules, Kali Uchis and Cuco. Fast forward to the present, there’s 17 latin artists slated to perform at this year’s Coachella – a total win for the culture! As we all know, this roster will and has already attracted a much more diverse audience.

As of late, J Balvin brought reggeaton and latin urbano back to the stage. His performance included reggeaton classics like “Oye Mi Canto” by N.O.R.E featuring Nina Sky and “Rakata” by Wisin y Yandel. Bad Bunny took to the stage on April 14th and returns again on the 21st to make a second iconic show. Los Tucanes de Tijuana (popular group from the late 80’s) graced the stage playing “La Chona” and other hits.

Chilean singer, Mon Laferte, has sold over a half of a million albums in Latin America and is also listed on this year’s lineup. Her career began on a singing competition show in Chile, Rojo.

In short, the amount of Latin as well as minority artists added to major festival lineups will continue to develop, namely due to Beyoncé’s Homecoming.

Ratchetón’s vocals float over the track as he sings to a past girlfriend “que conmigo estas bien feliz, ay ma, vente con migo” or “you know you were always happy with me, come over.” Last week at SXSW, Ratchetón and El Dusty premiered the song with live performances at Peligrosa House and the Mad Decent x AriZona “Good Gas” stage presented by super producer FKi 1st (Post Malone, Travis Scott, A.Chal) with performances also by Texas rappers 10k.Caash, G.U.N and Dro Fe.

RATCHETÓN hit the Latin music scene with his first single “Que Lo Que,” racking up over 350,000 streams and jumpstarting a growing fanbase. His follow up release “Callate” is a club anthem that brings a hip-hop bounce to his laid back Spanish flow.

RATCHETÓN was born in South Central Los Angeles and raised in East Hollywood around in a mixture of cultures and musical influences. Playing in bands growing up and then becoming involved in skateboarding culture, he always had an ear for music and an eye for visuals. When he met producer FKi 1st they set out to create a new sound dubbed “Ratchetón.” Carving out his own lane, he describes it as a fusion of current trap with traditional reggaeton mashed up in a fun, sexy, and of course ratchet way. Most importantly, these are bold international anthems that set him up for big things to come.

Currently RATCHETÓN is putting the finishing touches on his first album to be released May 2019.

KIM VIERA × DADDY YANKEE

KIM VIERA RELEASES NEW SINGLE “COMO” WITH DADDY YANKEE

WATCH THE ENCHANTING MUSIC VIDEO NOW

Today, Puerto Rican singer and songwriter, Kim Viera, shares a brand new single and video entitled “Como” with Daddy Yankee.

Listen HERE and watch the visual HERE via Republic Records.

A delicate fusion of Caribbean-style percussion, lush guitars, and red hot vocal chemistry, the track showcases the dynamic diversity at the heart of the New York-born singer’s signature “American Latina” style. Joining forces with the rising talent, Puerto Rican superstar Daddy Yankee turns up with a fiery performance of his own.

Additionally, the music video perfectly captures the Caribbean spirit. Shot in Puerto Rico by Carlos Perez, the stunning, seductive, and sexy affair, it offers an unforgettable visual complement to the song and illuminates Viera’s star power on-screen.

In many ways, Kim Viera was destined to merge cultures in her music. Growing up of Puerto Rican descent in an artist-friendly New York household, her parents both worked in the entertainment industry. Dad launched, owned, and operated a live production company, and Mom could be heard as a backup singer for Willie Colon, Ruben Bladés, and more. Yearly vacations in Puerto Rico represented that balance as the travel mixtape spanned Nat King Cole, James Taylor, The Carpenters, Christina Aguilera, Brandy, and Selena.  A vocal powerhouse, she made her introduction on viral hits alongside YouTube mega-star Kurt Schneider in between writing for superstars such as Lil Wayne. In 2016, she landed a major label deal with Republic Records and made waves by contributing “Tribe” to the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for Pitch Perfect 3. This anthem quickly clocked 1.8 million Spotify streams. Along the way, she honed her “American Latina” style, and it’s ready to set 2018 on fire with “Como.
