US Businesses Allowing Remote Working

The rise of cloud computing and teleconferencing represent both the biggest opportunity for growth as well as the most significant organizational challenge to companies around the world, according to new research from Condeco’s new research paper, The Modern Workplace 2019: People, places & technology, involving 750 corporate leaders. The full report can be downloaded here. Among the countries in the survey, remote working is particularly prevalent in Australia (45 per cent) with the US tied for being the country with the second most amount of companies allowing remote work (43 percent) and least widespread is Germany (35 per cent). However, US businesses were least likely to offer flextime (49 percent), while those in Singapore were most likely (66 percent). In addition, 43 percent of US business forecast that they will allow more remote working in the next year while only 9 percent have indicated that they will offer less remote working, a clear indicator that remote working is a major trend in America. 54 percent of US companies have said that they offer remote working to increase employee retention, which showcases employees increasing demands to work from home.

While recognizing digital transformation as crucial to their future success, 60 percent of those who participated express concern over the speed with which new technologies are reshaping their businesses. They are increasingly preoccupied with issues related to cloud computing, the internet of things, and big data. These technology challenges are contributing significantly to the changing nature of the corporate environment, the report finds. Cloud computing in particular has made it possible for increasing numbers of employees to work remotely and flexibly meaning that the central company workspace is rapidly becoming an administrative hub, rather than a traditional central focus where everyone gathers during set hours. The demands of regulation and compliance are also adding to the burden felt by businesses as they face the future. Condeco’s report is based on an in-depth survey of business leaders in six countries, including the United States, backed by qualitative interviews. Respondents overall say the biggest challenges facing their organizations in the next 12 months are digital transformation (37 percent) and the adoption of new technology (35 percent).

Across all countries surveyed, access to talent supply (26 per cent) and regulation and compliance (24 per cent) are considered greater organizational challenges than business uncertainty (22 per cent). Welcome to the flexible working revolution. Almost half of global businesses surveyed (41 percent) say they already offer some degree of remote working, while three-fifths (60 percent) provide flextime opportunities, allowing employees to choose when to start and end their workday. “The research clearly shows that businesses are in the process of transforming their workplaces digitally, which enables them to transform the way that they are used physically,” said Paul Statham, CEO of Condeco.”Today’s technology allows for space to be used more flexibly and for employees to work remotely. This benefits businesses by maximizing office space, reducing costs and by keeping employees engaged and productive.”

The end of meeting-room culture? When employees do go into the office, it is most often for meetings with colleagues and customers. Yet the researchers discovered that finding, booking and using meeting rooms is a consistent point of organizational tension, even as more people are working remotely. Fewer than a quarter of those surveyed (23 percent) say that their employees have access to meeting rooms whenever they need them; however, the US leads the world with 31 percent, compared to just 9 percent in Singapore. Only a third of respondents (31 percent) currently use specialist meeting-room scheduling software to help make efficient use of their available space. Some of those surveyed believed that there was an opportunity to use artificial intelligence to book and use meeting rooms more effectively.

“AI can release individuals from routine, repetitive tasks at work and free them up for more value-adding and enriching activities. That’s why it is likely to play an important role in meeting room booking software,” said Peter Otto, Chief Product Officer at Condeco. Businesses are only just beginning to realize the extent to which the need for co-workers to meet in person is a thing of the past, as new conferencing systems enable teams to maintain real-time collaboration and conversation across vast distances and multiple time zones.“Ultimately new technology will enable businesses to allocate their resources and time more effectively,” said Otto.“There is also a role it can play in gathering data, but companies need to be aware of the ethical and privacy aspects of using it in this way and be prepared to be fully transparent in communicating what they are doing to their employees.”

US leaders prepare for the future While a fifth of business leaders worldwide (22 per cent) said that uncertainty was a concern for them, less than one fifth of American business leaders (16 percent) echoed this. The most-common concern for US respondents is technology adoption (45 percent) and talent supply (30 percent), suggesting that businesses are expecting these to be major issues over the next year. Only 11 percent of US business cited access to capital as their top organizational concern.

Opinion: Will tariffs really raise consumer prices?

President Trump recently raised tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese exports and threatened to impose import duties on all Chinese goods coming into the United States.  Will American prices rise substantially as a result? This is a loaded question, because contrary to popular belief, tariffs don’t always raise prices.

One alarming study from The Trade Partnership, a think tank, estimates that an average American family of four may have to pay an extra $767. And if all Chinese exports are taxed, the cost could rise to more than $2,000.

However, the effects of tariffs on prices are not as straightforward as they may appear at first glance. Indeed, until the pioneering contribution by the late Lloyd Metzler, a University of Chicago professor, the question was not even explored. It was taken for granted that tariffs automatically raise the prices of imported goods. But Metzler’s article, known in the literature on international economics as the Metzler Paradox, changed this view once and for all. Let us analyze the problem without hysteria.

Tariffs have two effects on prices: one tending to raise them, the other tending to lower them. The overall impact depends on which effect is stronger.

It all comes down to supply and demand for goods in China. The United States is a large importer of Chinese products, so tariffs will cause a huge decline in American demand for Chinese goods because of the initial rise in prices. But as demand falls substantially, the prices of exportable goods inside China will also decline substantially.

Assuming that transportation costs are minimal, as they are nowadays, the American price of a Chinese product is determined as follows: American Price = Chinese Price(1 + t), where “t” is the rate of tariff. From this formula, it is clear that there are two countervailing effects on the U.S. price of Chinese goods. A rise in the tariff rate initially tends to raise it, whereas the resultant fall in the Chinese price tends to lower it. The final effect depends on whether the Chinese price declines more or less than the rate of tariff.

As a simple example, suppose Walmart imports a shirt from China for $20, and then faces a 25 percent tariff on that import. If China’s price is constant, then the same shirt will now cost $24. But the Chinese price cannot stay constant. Since the United States imports a vast number of Chinese shirts, the demand for Chinese shirts will fall sharply, and that will lower the Chinese price. Say this price declines to $18, then a 25 percent tariff will raise its U.S. cost by one fourth to $22.50, which is still higher than its free-trade cost of $20.

At a Chinese price of $16, the tariff-inclusive price will be the same as the free-trade price. But if the Chinese price were to fall below $16, the cost to Walmart will be less than $20. Thus, it all depends on the forces of supply and demand inside China.

The extent of the Chinese price decrease depends on the cost of producing a shirt. If this cost is low, then the price decrease can be large in the wake of declining demand, because a producer can still make some profit. Since Chinese wages are much lower than American wages, the Chinese cost of producing a shirt is likely to be very low, in which case the Chinese shirt price can fall substantially. If that happens, American prices of goods imported from China could actually decline.

Indeed, this may explain why thus far the U.S. tariffs that were imposed on Chinese exports in September 2018 have not been inflationary. In fact, even the Federal Reserve has been surprised by the recent cooling of core inflation and, as a result, pledged not to raise interest rates any further.

So the American consumer has nothing to worry about, especially when the consumer can easily switch to imports from other countries.

Large trade deficits with China have decimated American manufacturing and wages. U.S. industries need a revival, and tariffs are indispensable toward this purpose. In 1800, at the start of the American republic, barely 5 percent of the U.S. labor force was employed in manufacturing; today, according to the Economic Report of the President, 2019, the share is about 8 percent — vastly below the 30 percent figure that prevailed in the 1960s.
We are very close to where we were in 1800, and clearly, the manufacturing sector still needs a lot of support.

Note that under Abraham Lincoln tariffs were as high as 60 percent. As a result, following the Civil War, American manufacturing became the envy of the world. By 1900 the United States was among the nations with the highest living standard. Even though tariffs were high, prices fell or remained stable for several years.

Such price behavior helped raise the overall standard of living. When a 60 percent tariff rate could not harm the American consumer, how can a mere 25 percent? Free trade has been the holy grail of international economics for decades, but historically, the fastest growth in the American living standard has occurred under the umbrella of tariffs.

REMARKS BY ROLLS-ROYCE CEO TORSTEN MÜLLER-ÖTVÖS

The following below is spoken from Rolls-Royce’s CEO himself Torsten Müller-Ötvös.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to the House of Rolls-Royce here in Geneva!

Each year we come to Geneva to update you about our business and to share with you some truly special examples of our wonderful products.

And this year is no exception.

As the world’s pinnacle luxury brand, celebrating our 115th anniversary this year, we take great pride in these beautiful and precious items, lovingly handcrafted by the nearly 2000 people who work at the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood.

This celebrated facility in West Sussex, is acknowledged as a global centre of luxury manufacturing excellence. It lies at the very heart of the Rolls-Royce success story.

Our Home is a very unique place – a creative oasis where we are constantly guided by the vision of our founding fathers, Charles Rolls and Henry Royce to “Strive for perfection in everything you do”.

Since 2003 every Rolls-Royce in the world has been created here.

Ladies and Gentlemen, at Rolls-Royce, our clients are our life-blood. They are our heroes and our friends and we are obsessively focused on providing for their needs and desires. For them, being within the warm embrace of the Rolls-Royce family is an unbelievable experience, like no other. And they are deeply appreciative of our hyper-centric attention to the smallest of details.

The Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood has become a must-visit destination for large numbers of our valued clients.

They come from around the world to specify their Rolls-Royces and to meet our designers, engineers and bespoke craftspeople.

Many return later to view their creation being built in our factory or to take delivery of their Rolls-Royce in our fully bespoke Customer Suite.

So, from Goodwood to Geneva, this year, we have brought some of the best examples of products for you view and to enjoy. They are all truly lovely!

We have our complete product offering on our stand today, led by the world’s most exclusive luxury product the Rolls-Royce Phantom, described by many of you in the media and by our customers as “the Best Car in the World”.

Phantom is at the core of our company’s success. It is a global expression of ultimate achievement and I am pleased to report that more and more of our younger customers are experiencing our Phantom short-wheelbase as a self-driver’s car.

Phantom is flanked by Ghost, now in its 10th year of production and still in strong demand around the world. Ghost is a global favorite among our powerful, entrepreneurial clients.

Then, we have brought from Goodwood examples of our two highly contemporary, seductive coupe models.

Wraith – here in its Black Badge guise – is the ultimate powerful and agile Grand Tourer. Edgy and menacing, Wraith appeals to our young clients who are trendsetting, cosmopolitan citizens of the world.

And then, Dawn, our truly beautiful sexy and seductive drophead coupe. Dawn is much loved by our more social, fun-loving customers who crave the sensual pleasure of open-air travel.

Finally, to complete our product line-up we are joined this year by our hugely successful Rolls-Royce Cullinan, our first SUV.

Cullinan was launched to great global acclaim last year and has received effusive headlines in the media and an enthusiastic welcome from our customers.

I am delighted to tell you that our forward orders for Cullinan stretch into the fourth quarter of this year.

We are in full production at our Goodwood factory and continue to make substantial investments, including the employment of an additional 200 associates, in order to meet this very pleasing customer demand.

I can confidently say today that Rolls-Royce is set on a continuous and successful growth trajectory.

And speaking of success, it is with great pride that I can tell you that 2018 was another exceptional year for Rolls-Royce.

We set an historic business record, achieving our highest annual sales in our marque’s 115-year history.

We delivered 4,107 cars to customers in over 50 countries around the world and in doing so achieved year-on-year sales growth in all regions. The Americas remained our largest market.

But at Rolls-Royce it’s not all about volume.

Our unique and successful business model focuses on preserving the rarity of our products, which is a key demand of our customers, while at the same time achieving record levels of profitability.

This, we believe, is the real hallmark of how a true luxury brand should be managed.

In this regard I am happy to report that the Rolls-Royce business generates pleasing profits and we continue to contribute to the bottom line of our shareholder, the BMW Group.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please take a close look at and enjoy all the fine Rolls-Royces on our stand. Each one contains unique and beautiful examples of our world- renowned Bespoke offerings.

No other manufacturer of luxury goods can equal customer personalization to this level.

Indeed, today more than ever, it is globally recognized that “Bespoke IS Rolls-Royce”.

To more fully understand our Bespoke offering, please do take a particularly close look at this beautiful Phantom Tranquillity.

Created for those who conceive and achieve the impossible, Tranquillity is an expression of Phantom’s standing as the rarest and most desired object in the luxury world.

The Tranquillity Collection is strictly limited to just 25 examples worldwide and I am pleased to tell you that they have already all been purchased by discerning Rolls- Royce collectors.

Look into the car and see the tasteful integration of wafer thin shavings of the Muonionalusta meteor that fell to earth in Sweden over a hundred years ago.

And enjoy the highly reflective stainless steel, 24 carat gold plating and space grade aluminium elements in the car.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the contemporary Rolls-Royce of today – a 115 year old brand, completely relevant in the present and moving purposefully into the future. A vibrant, successful and sustainable business, providing the most discerning people in the world with the rarest and very best luxury products and service on Earth.

As for the future: well, as you can imagine, we are not standing still!

We are imagineering and already engineering an exciting future for Rolls-Royce. A future that will be fully electric, digital and technologically innovative while never overlooking our commitment to the custodianship of the great Rolls-Royce brand.

This is what our customers and the world expects of us and rest assured, this is what we will deliver.

But for now, thank you for listening and I invite you to join me and my colleagues on the stand for a closer look at our lovely cars.

Thank you.

The Best Products To Sell From Your Home

Looking to earn some extra cash? One of the best ways to do this in today’s day and age is to sell items online from your home by setting up your own e-commerce company. This can be relatively straightforward to do as the entire operation can be run from your own home and in many cases you do not even need to store the goods at your house. The key to success will be picking the right items to sell – in addition to being in demand, these should also be ones that are cheap to source, easy to store and simple to deliver. Here are a few good options.

Jewelry

Jewelry is always in demand, and people often prefer to buy from independent and small suppliers so that they can find unique, eye-catching designs at affordable prices. Whether you are making the jewelry yourself or sourcing it from elsewhere, this can be very easy to sell online, and it is always in demand. Just make sure that you include high-quality photographs and product descriptions with each piece so that the consumer has a clear idea of what to expect.

Cosmetics

Similarly, cosmetics and beauty products are always in demand with people constantly on the lookout for hidden gems from smaller suppliers. Cosmetics can also be simple to store, package and ship and there are also many companies that allow you to sell on their behalf which can be an effective way to sell in-demand products.

Socks

The sock industry is experiencing a huge boom right now, and it is expected to exceed $11 billion by 2023. In particular, colorful designs and unique patterns are proving to be highly popular so look to source wholesale socks, and you could start running a lucrative business. Additionally, they are perfect for home businesses because are lightweight and you can order in bulk to allow for an increased average order value with product bundling.

Baked Goods

Thanks to shows like The Great British Bakeoff there has been a surge in demand for baked goods in recent times. You can capitalize this by baking your own goods and selling them both directly from your home and online. This can be an excellent business to run from home, but you will need to make sure that you have thought about how to ensure freshness when shipping baked goods.

Smartphone Accessories

Seeing as they play such a key part in modern day life for people of all ages, it is no surprise that smartphone accessories are exploding in popularity in 2018. What’s more, they are also very cheap to source and easy to store, so they are ideal for businesses that are run from home.

Selling products online from your home can be a terrific source of income whether it is your sole source of income or a way to earn on the side. The above are all good options for products to sell from your home as they are in demand, easy to keep around the home and simply to ship.

“We believe Starlight Xperience has the potential to transform the hospital experience for millions of seriously ill children and their families,” said Chris Helfrich, CEO of Starlight Children’s Foundation. “We’re thrilled to stand beside The Walt Disney Company, Google, Lenovo and Niagara Cares in unveiling this exciting new program, which is the latest evolution in our 35-year history of bringing innovative entertainment technologies to hospitalized kids.”

“Providing these unique entertainment experiences reflects our commitment to bring comfort during what can be difficult times for kids and families. “We are thrilled to be working with Starlight and Google to bring technology to hospitalized children in their time of need. Helping to provide a solution for the children and their families allows us to truly make a difference for the better,” said Gunjan Shah, general manager for North America Smart Devices at Lenovo.

Starlight Xperience was developed in part through a series of grants provided by Starlight to the CHARIOT program (short for Childhood Anxiety Reduction through Innovation and Technology) at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. CHARIOT implements new technologies in the hospital that are nontraditional yet familiar to children to engage and distract them during stressful or painful procedures, keeping clinical usage in mind and improving upon the typical hospital experience. This past summer, Starlight Xperience was soft launched and tested at five children’s hospitals: Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, Minn., and Texas Children’s Hospital.

“At Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, virtual reality has been a fantastic addition for our patients,” said Chantel Barney, Ph.D., a clinical scientist who leads Gillette’s VR program. “In some instances, we’ve been able to curb the anxiety and fears our kids typically experience during procedures such as blood draws, transfusions, wound cleanings, casting and more. It’s a wonderful distraction for kids and parents alike.”

“We’re proud to support Starlight Xperience and look forward to bringing smiles to the faces of hospitalized children through this educational and inspirational program,” said Andrew Peykoff II, President and CEO, Niagara Bottling. “This technology makes learning fun and we’re excited to expand the program to even more children.”

Thanks to the grants provided by The Walt Disney Company and Niagara Cares, in addition to the generosity of charitable donations from individuals, Starlight is on track to deliver up to 1,000 Starlight Xperience kits to its network of hospital partners by the end of 2018, with a goal of doubling that by the end of 2019. A donation to Starlight will entertain, educate and inspire hospitalized kids across the US through stimulating immersive experiences that transport children from the hospital to any place in the world – or beyond – through the magic of virtual reality.

The public is invited to learn more and support the program online at www.starlight.org/starlight-xperience.

Lenny Kravitz’s New Mission with TWICE Toothpaste

Brothers Julian and Cody Levine and Lenny Kravitz have joined forces to bring a new kind of oral care brand, Twice, to the beauty & wellnessmarket. The brand is helping consumers take care of their smiles with products designed to positively impact brushing habits and our twice-a-day routines, starting with toothpaste.

Twice will debut a premium toothpaste set, with a unique flavor experience for morning and night. The morning formula, Early Bird, is designed to awaken, while the nighttime formula, Twilight, promotes relaxation. A shocking 35% of Americans do not brush twice a day, and so it is Twice’s mission to help improve this statistic with toothpaste purposefully designed from the inside out.

Founded from a genuine desire to spread healthy smiles across the globe, the Company will give 10 percent of its profits to the GLO Good Foundation, which serves communities in dire need of proper dental care.

“The only thing better than a beautiful smile is giving one to someone else,” says co-founder Julian Levine. “With Twice, we aim to offer innovative and highly effective oral care products that also make an impact – from as small as looking great on your bathroom counter to as meaningful as changing someone’s life by alleviating physical and emotional pain through dental care.”

The Levine brothers became inspired to create Twice in 2016, during a volunteer mission with GLO Good Foundation and Lenny’s Let Love Rule Foundation in Eleuthera, Bahamas, where the organizations had teamed up to host a free dental clinic. There, the brothers came face-to-face with hundreds of people suffering from all types of oral health diseases, many in serious pain, and saw first hand how grateful they were to receive proper oral care. They had become awakened to the transformational power of a smile and immediately bonded with Lenny over the experience; all three agreed they wanted to do more.

Soon after, the brothers contacted Lenny with the idea to give the oral care industry a makeover with a brand called Twice that would combine healthy and effective ingredients, great taste, and sharp, counter-friendly packaging with a cause: to improve the oral health care crisis. With Twice, they could help significantly increase the number of healthy mouths and confident smiles, and get people everywhere brushing twice a day. Lenny wanted to get involved in a big way, so together they began building the brand as co-founders.

“It’s easy to take for granted something as simple as brushing your teeth, but there are people around the world that look at toothpaste as a luxury,” says co-founder Lenny Kravitz. “Eleuthera is home for me, so the people and this cause are very close to my heart, and there’s nothing I want more than to see them happy, healthy and smiling. That’s why I’m committed to making Twice a reality and growing this important mission.”

The Company’s philosophy is that overall health starts in the mouth. Twice toothpaste contains a good-for-you ingredient profile power-packed with antioxidants and vitamins A, C, E, plant-based extract aloe vera, and unique functional flavors. Designed to do it all, the formula has dentist-trusted and proven ingredients to help whiten teeth, remineralize enamel, prevent painful cavities, and protect against sensitivity. Twice is also free of unnecessary ingredients known to cause irritation traditionally found in toothpaste. While the brothers are not dentists – Julian spent years as an investor and Cody as a creative marketer – they grew up watching their father, a well-respected dentist and inventor, becoming inspired and well-versed in the industry as a result. They researched and tested every product on the market, and tapped a network of renowned dentists, chemists, flavor specialists, and manufacturers to create their first two unique products:

Early Bird: a blast of morning mint that combines wintergreen and peppermint for your anytime wakeup call.
Twilight: a relaxing nighttime toothpaste that blends refreshing peppermint with vanilla and a gentle touch of lavender for a smooth transition from morning to night.

“Products that care for your smile should make you smile. So we set out to create the best toothpaste that makes an impact – one that we love using, every morning and every night,” says co-founder Cody Levine. “With a focus on experience, efficacy, design, and social responsibility, we believe it’s time to think Twice about your toothpaste.

Twice contains high-quality, globally-sourced ingredients, and is formulated and manufactured in the USA. The toothpaste is responsibly made to be non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free and never tested on animals. Starting in September 2018, the duo is available for $18.99 at www.smiletwice.com.
