The highest standards of precision and engineering on show link Rolex and the Reunion, while underlining Rolex’s commitment to motor sport globally.”

• Nissan’s long-term involvement in motor sport was exhibited, from the 1971 Datsun 510, to the Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo – the 1994 Rolex 24 At DAYTONA winner – and the 2019 Formula E Nissan racing car.

• Meanwhile, legendary chassis from Lotus, Lola, McLaren, AAR and Surtees formed part of the 50th anniversary of Formula 5000.

SILICON VALLEY × BESPOKE ROLLS-ROYCE

SILICON VALLEY TECH EXECUTIVE TAKES DELIVERY OF BESPOKE ROLLS-ROYCE DAWN BLACK BADGE AT PEBBLE BEACH

Benjamin Treynor Sloss, Vice President of Engineering at Google and a well-known car enthusiast, has taken delivery of a very personal Rolls-Royce Dawn Black Badge at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Presented to him at the Rolls-Royce Collectors Cocktail Reception on Saturday night by Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce, this stunningly contemporary Dawn Black Badge was created in collaboration with the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective in Goodwood, England in the Slosses’ personal livery.

“Our Rolls-Royce story began here at Pebble Beach in 2014 when we were looking for a two-door coupe with four useable seats for adults,” comments Ben Sloss. “Brands such as Aston Martin or Bentley do not offer anything suitable. When we saw the Rolls-Royce Wraith, we loved the style and elegance of the coupe, and when we took it for test drive we were impressed (really, startled) by how well it accelerated and handled, in addition to the sublime ride quality and materials we already associated with the Rolls-Royce brand. The Wraith offered a unique combination of luxury car experience and sports car performance, and we fell in love with it on the spot.”

Ben’s wife Christine subsequently bought a Rolls-Royce Dawn, a motor-car that has become her daily driver. “You can tell which are the favourite cars in our family by the mileage they have on them,” comments Mrs. Christine Sloss. “My Dawn has over 13,000 miles on the clock, because both Ben and I drive it regularly, and we enjoy its open-air experience so much that Ben decided he wanted one too.”

“Christine and I are both gentleman… err, gentleperson racing drivers, competing in endurance races in GT racing cars, and many of our street cars are two-seater supercars with a very distinctive and personal livery,” continues Ben Sloss. “Michael Fux showed me that Rolls-Royce’s craftspeople could create completely personal, outrageous but beautiful colour schemes, and when I heard about the sportier Dawn Black Badge, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to commission a very personal Rolls-Royce.”

“The Rolls-Royce Dawn Black Badge is the most uncompromising expression of open-top luxury in the world, and Ben’s personal vision has demonstrated that Black Badge Rolls-Royces can be some of the most beautiful statements of automotive power on the road today,” commented Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce on presenting the car to Mr. Sloss.

The Ben Sloss Dawn Black Badge

Through the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Los Gatos dealership, Ben Sloss worked closely with the Bespoke Collective at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood to realize his vision for his perfect personal Rolls-Royce. His motor-racing pursuits led him to the more driver-focused Dawn Black Badge as the canvas for his vision, a reinterpretation of the livery on the couple’s racing cars.

“Our racing cars carry the colors of the flag of Modena in Northern Italy. I wanted to see what Rolls-Royce could do with those same colors,” comments Mr. Sloss. “The first time I saw the livery the Rolls-Royce team had created for the Dawn, I burst out with ‘O my God, that’s unreal — I love it!!’ It’s outrageous, it’s over the top… it’s perfect. I still grin every time I see it.”

The Bespoke Collective set to work reinterpreting the colour scheme into Rolls-Royce design language, creating two new bespoke paint colours for the exterior of his Dawn Black Badge. The intense deep yellow that adorns the main bodywork has been named ‘Superflare’ due to its radiance under the California sun, whilst it is contrasted with the darkest of navy blues named Pikes Peak Blue due to Mr. Sloss’ interest in the king of timed hill climbs. A further flash of Superflare yellow offsets the black of the 21” carbon fibre and aluminium wheel.

The same color scheme is continued throughout the interior of Mr. Sloss’ Dawn Black Badge, with the seats, dashboard, tonneau cover and rear seat waterfall clad in Navy Blue leathers, highlighted with Bright Yellow seat piping, stitched RR headrest logos and unique to Black Badge model infinity logo between the rear seats. The yellow theme continues in the cabin with a yellow flash along the door interiors, two-tone Navy Blue and Bright Yellow steering wheel and an exclusively developed Bright Yellow pinstripe applied to the Piano Milori Blue wood dashboard, the first use of Milori Blue outside the one-off customer Phantom, ‘Whispered Muse’, shown at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. Mr Sloss’ Dawn Black Badge is finished with a Navy Blue leather-clad Aero Cowling enclosing the rear seats.

Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce tops the list, featured in 11 different tunes by such artists as Future, The Weeknd, and Kodak Black. Ferrari is a close second. Chevrolet, Lamborghini, Bentley, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche each get touts in several songs. Among non-car shout-outs, old standbys Hennessy cognac and Nike’s Air Jordan sneaker label got the most. We also found that it’s not just alcohol, guns, clothing, and super luxury making it into songs anymore—software, cookware, and even Band-Aids are making the grade.

As far as the song including the most name-checks, the crown goes to “Bad and Boujee” by hip-hop group Migos, which climbed all the way to the No. 1 spot on the charts early this year. It includes 19 brand mentions, from Instagram and Klout to Segway scooters and, um, Crock-Pot slow cookers. Car references are sprinkled throughout the song, too. They rap about a “lamb” and a “frog,” nods to Lamborghini and Porsche. There’s also a reference to the Ferrari 458 Spider, a drop-top convertible that costs more than a quarter-million dollars. The Rolls-Royce Ghost gets some attention as well.

The obvious question when musicians mention obscure brands is, are they getting paid? Sometimes they do. As with television shows and feature films, brands like to insert themselves into pop culture, and music is no different. Dozens of music videos show off stuff from Beats, the Jimmy Iovine/Dr. Dre headphones brand owned by Apple Inc. The item appears in several of Lady Gaga’s music videos, from her breakout hit “Just Dance” to “Poker Face” and “Telephone.” Beats Pill speakers, meanwhile, are clearly visible in videos from Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, and Nicki Minaj.

It’s often unclear what’s a paid placement and what’s not, however, since artists generally don’t disclose the deals. No, Drake wasn’t paid by Rolls-Royce to include the Wraith in “Portland,” or its bigger and pricier cousin, the Phantom, in “Jumpman,” according to the manufacturer. But Chris Brown’s 2008 hit “Forever,” which featured the line “double your pleasure,” turned out to be an extended version of a chewing gum jingle for Wrigley’s Doublemint.

(Photo Cred: Rebecca Smeyne —Billboard)

There’s a middle ground, however. Rolls-Royce, for example, will sometimes provide cars to be featured in music videos, said company spokesman Gerry Spahn. When someone uses the car as a shorthand for luxury, it helps the brand, he said. And besides, celebrities and musicians make up about 20 percent of the automaker’s customers, so it has the potential to be a sales strategy, too.

The $400,000 Phantom is Rolls-Royce’s signature vehicle, but the company has attracted much hype for three other models it’s released since 2009: the Ghost, Wraith, and Dawn. All have garnered song mentions, with the Wraith topping the tally with four.
While parent company BMW AG keeps close tabs on the Rolls-Royce brand, Spahn said they’re more than happy for the exposure. Last year, Rolls-Royce had its second-highest sales numbers ever, delivering more than 4,000 cars to wealthy customers around the world. Even if the car’s desirability increased, production constraints limit the company to a maximum of 6,000 cars a year, said a person with knowledge of its operations.

INFINITI’S PROTOTYPE 9 PEBBLE BEACH DEBUT

Nissan Motor Corporation and premium automotive brand INFINITI have unveiled a sleek, open-wheeled electric retro roadster prototype at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The car, called Prototype 9, is a celebration of Nissan Motor and INFINITI’s ingenuity, artistry and craftsmanship. It represents a reimagining of a 1940s race car with time-honored production techniques employed to realize its retro design.

Prototype 9 celebrates the tradition of ingenuity, craftsmanship and passion of our forebears at Nissan Motor Corporation, on whose shoulders we stand today. It started as a discussion: What if INFINITI had created a race car in the 1940s? If one were to imagine an open-wheeled INFINITI racer on the famous circuits of the era, such as Japan’s Tamagawa Speedway, what would that look like? The sketches were stunning and the idea so compelling that we had to produce a prototype. As other departments became aware of this, they volunteered their time to create a working vehicle.”
Alfonso Albaisa, Senior Vice President, Global Design

Prototype 9 is emblematic of INFINITI’s entrepreneurial spirit and passion for stunning design. From humble beginnings as a sketch, to the dynamic example presented at Pebble Beach, Prototype 9 has been brought to life as an after-hours endeavor by a passionate and enterprising team of employees from across the Nissan Motor Corporation.

The car is powered by a prototype electric motor and battery from Nissan Motor Corporation’s Advanced Powertrain Department. This nod to the future contrasts with the traditional materials and techniques applied for the Prototype 9’s manufacture, including panels hand-beaten by a team of Takumi – Nissan Motor’s master artisans.

“What started as an after-hours idea grew into a fully fledged prototype; our designers and engineers were excited by the notion of creating a past vision, a nod to our origins. They volunteered their own time; more and more staff became involved. Our teams have proven skills in manufacturing, engineering, design and advanced powertrains, yet they wanted to bring their own traditional craftsmanship to the project. They made Prototype 9 a reality, a result of their ingenuity – they recognized and realized the past, powered by a future-centric electric powertrain at its heart. Prototype 9 blends modern technology and hand-crafted details paying tribute to the forebears of INFINITI.”
Roland Krueger, Chairman and Global President

Prototype 9 was inspired by an emerging era of Japanese motorsport. The custom-built Prince R380, which also will be shown during Monterey Car Week at The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering, broke several land speed records in 1965 before taking overall victory at the 1966 Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji Speedway. Prince Motor Company is considered to be Japan’s original builder of premium automobiles, and its legacy can be traced to INFINITI Motor Company and its current model line. The R380 shown at The Quail is the actual Japanese Grand Prix-winning car, believed to be the only surviving R380.

“We like to think that INFINITI, with its stunning design, high performance capability and forward-looking technology, shares some DNA with the Prince Motor Company, which became part of Nissan Motors. Prototype 9 is a celebration of the artistry and ingenuity inherent in our company.”
Alfonso Albaisa, Senior Vice President, Global Design

TRACK DAY WITH LIFERUSH ADVENTURES

By Anthony Sovinsky + Vaughn Lowery

Humans are unique in their ability to overcome the unimaginable. We are forced to explore the unknown –  to push our physical and mental limits. Brave people have taken chances and it has shaped our universe for the better. Whether we are attempting to climb the highest mountain or land our dream job, the thrill of doing something we haven’t done before creates a spark and meaning in our lives. For some of us this becomes a constant journey of discovering the next big thrill or adventure to add to the list of successes. Whether it be a bucket list item or just a childhood aspiration.

LifeRush Adventures is a society striving to deliver outdoor adventures that appeal to the adrenal glands. Recently, we received the pleasure of accompanying them on a trip to the world renowned Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This course has been in operation for over 40+ years and has hosted some of the greatest races of all time. In 2008, Mazda Raceway was home to the Redbull U.S. Grand Prix where Valentino Rossi (multiple MotoGP World Champion) overtakes Casey Stoner in The Corkscrew (one of the hardest turns in motor racing in which you hit a blind cress into a three-story drop with a unique left-right combination) to win the race. It was Rossi’s first win in America; and he kisses The Corkscrew in front of 150,000 spectators.

LifeRush Adventures in collaboration with Fast Toys Club makes these spectacular track events possible. Every month they take a different track and list an exotic car to commission (Lamborghini Huracan, Porsche 911, Audi R8, etc.) for your driving pleasure. Or, if you own a sports car, you can track it at $359/day.  Moreover, they possess excellent team building/corporate packages, beginning at $3,000 (includes one supercar plus six laps around the track per person).

At Mazda Raceway, we were offered a 2017 Corvette Z06. In the morning, we started out with an instructional meeting on how to navigate the track: how and when to pass vehicles; the distinction of flags used; additional safety measures and the proper way to ‘hit the apex.’

Moments after, we paired up with a coach (or ride along instructor), we strapped on our helmets and fastened our passenger seat belts. If you’re a confident driver just hop in the driver’s seat.

LifeRush Adventures also offers an array of spontaneous activities: helicopter tours, costal exotic car drives, paddle boarding and flyboarding.

Fresh from its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June, Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) will introduce its latest high performance creation, the Jaguar XE SV Project 8, to North American automotive enthusiasts during this year’s Monterey Car Week.

Following its first public showing just 6 weeks ago in the U.K., the weekend’s activities for Jaguar Land Rover kick off on Thursday with Project 8 making its dynamic debut during the welcome reception for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

”Project 8 is the most extreme performance Jaguar ever and the second Collector’s Edition vehicle from SVO,” said John Edwards, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations. “Our team of engineers and designers are excited to showcase this special vehicle to prospective clients and enthusiasts in North America, where we so many of our valued clients are based.”

“No more than 300 of these special performance cars will be produced for sale worldwide. What better way to debut Project 8 – our most track-focused production car ever, than on America’s most iconic road course?”

Jaguar Land Rover SVO will bring two versions of the Project 8 to show in Monterey; a four-seat car finished in Velocity Blue representative of what U.S. enthusiasts will be able to buy and the other finished in Valencia Orange, featuring an optional two-seat Track Pack – available to customers outside the U.S. – which includes lightweight front carbon fiber racing seats with four-point harnesses fixed to a harness retention hoop in place of the rear seats4.

“Bringing the XE SV Project 8 to North America and debuting it at the events during Monterey Car Week was a natural fit,” said Kim McCullough, Vice President of Marketing for Jaguar Land Rover North America. “The week’s festivities on the Monterey Peninsula bring together the most passionate automotive enthusiasts from around the world each year and we’re excited to share our latest passion project with them.”

JAGUAR LAND ROVER AT THE MONTEREY MOTORSPORTS REUNION

Located along the start/finish straight in the race paddock, the four Jaguar Land Rover pit lane garages play host to a celebration of the brand’s latest vehicles.

The Jaguar Land Rover pit garages will present race fans a special exhibit, “the House of SVO,” showcasing the engineering and design capabilities of SVO in creating high-performance versions of the brand’s most popular cars. Visitors to the space can see the all-terrain Range Rover Sport SVR performance SUV and Jaguar’s all-weather supercar, the 200mph F-TYPE SVR Coupe2. The centerpiece of the display will be the Jaguar XE SV Project 8, where prospective clients can be among first to register their interest for the limited edition model.

Guests to the garages also have the opportunity to try their hand behind the wheel of a Panasonic Jaguar Racing Formula E race car; piloting the vehicle as part of an immersive virtual reality experience housed within the Jaguar display space.

Nestled between turns three and four of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, fans can explore the off-road limits of their favorite British SUV brand behind the wheel of several different Land Rover vehicles, including the all-new fifth-generation Land Rover Discovery. Visitors will climb and descend steep hills, drive off-camber turns and over obstacles, sampling the latest driver’s assistance aids which help make easy work of even the toughest trails3.

Fresh from its debut at the New York International Auto Show, Land Rover will also have the fourth member of the Range Rover family – the all-new Range Rover Velar – on display, sharing space with the brand’s halo vehicle from SVO, the $200,000 ultra-luxury Range Rover SVAutobiography Long Wheelbase1.

The Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca runs from Thursday, August 17, through Sunday, August 20; please visitwww.MazdaRaceway.com for full event scheduling.

THE QUAIL, A MOTORSPORTS GATHERING

In addition to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, the XE SV Project 8 will also be shown on Friday, August 18, at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. Flanked by SVO’s first-ever series production Jaguar, the 575hp F-TYPE SVR, the limited-production XE SV Project 8 will join more than 200 other rare automobiles and motorcycles in an exclusive garden-party setting on the rolling greens of Quail Lodge & Golf Club from 10:00AM – 4:00PM.

EXOTICS ON CANNERY ROW

Later in the day, Special Vehicle Operations will show the 2018 Jaguar XE SV Project 8 at Exotics on Cannery Row. As one of the few non-ticketed public events during Monterey Car Week, Exotics on Cannery Row showcases some of the rarest and most exciting supercars of our time against the backdrop of Monterey’s historic downtown. The event is free and open to the public, running from 3:00 – 8:00PM.

XE SV PROJECT 8

Born from SVO’s desire to engineer the ultimate super sports sedan, the XE SV Project 8 builds on the success of the 2016 F-TYPE Project 7 as the brand’s second Collector’s Series vehicle; redefining the capabilities of how a four-door Jaguar can perform on track.

With the project currently under development, engineers are targeting a power output of 592hp; enough to make this the quickest road going Jaguar ever and capable of speeds up to 200 mph2. Along with the dramatic increase in power, a number of functional aerodynamic, suspension and interior enhancements to the XE help make this car the brand’s most powerful, agile and extreme performance vehicle ever4.

Global production for the XE SV Project 8 will be limited to just 300 units, each hand assembled at the SVO technical center in Coventry, England. Senior representatives from SVO will be on hand at events throughout the weekend to answer questions and help potential buyers register their interest. Those not attending can visitwww.JaguarUSA.com to keep up to date and register their interest.
