HOLIDAYS × FREDERICKSBURG, TX

Tenth Annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony set for Friday, November 23, in Fredericksburg

Experience the unique mix of German Christmas traditions and warm Texan hospitality this holiday season in Fredericksburg. In partnership with the City of Fredericksburg, the Fredericksburg Convention & Visitor Bureau will begin the season with the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree and German Christmas Pyramid on the evening of Friday, November 23, at Marktplatz.

The festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m. on the East side of the Vereins Kirche with entertainment throughout the evening by The TubaMeisters, The Low Brass Project band, the Fredericksburg Chorale and the Fredericksburg Akkordeon Klub. The countdown and lighting ceremony will take place at 7:00 p.m.

Following the lighting ceremony, the entertainment will continue until 8:00 p.m. with more holiday favorites as Santa makes his way to the Oktoberfest Halle at Marktplatz, where free cookies, hot chocolate and bottled water will be available.

Cookies will be provided by a number of local businesses and hot chocolate will be prepared by the Fredericksburg Volunteer Fire Department.

Children are invited to take free photos with Santa (bring your own camera or phone), and groups are encouraged to take photos at the holiday selfie station, also at the Oktoberfest Halle.

In case of inclement weather, the entertainment and countdown will be relocated under the Adelsverein Halle at Marktplatz.

Lighting ceremony attendees can also enjoy outdoor ice skating until 10:00 p.m. on Friday, November 23, at Eisbahn in the Kinderhalle Pavilion at Marktplatz (for a fee). All day skating and skate rental is $15 per person, and tickets are available at the gate.

The German holiday spirit is most apparent with Fredericksburg’s 26-foot tall wooden German Christmas Pyramid that was hand-crafted in Germany in 2009 specifically for Fredericksburg. Considered staples in German holiday decorating, Christmas pyramids are wooden carousel-like structures (normally table-top size) that have several levels depicting Christmas motifs, such as angels and manger scenes.

Fredericksburg’s Community Christmas Tree, also part of the lighting ceremony, stands 30 feet tall and dons hand-crafted ornaments donated by Hill Country artisans. The beautifully lit Christmas tree and Christmas pyramid are the centerpiece of the holiday magic in Fredericksburg and will be prominently displayed at Marktplatz through January 6, 2019.

Make plans to attend the lighting ceremony with your family, friends and neighbors. To learn more about all of the holiday events in Fredericksburg and to download a free 2018 Fredericksburg Christmas & Holiday Guide, log on to holidays.VisitFredericksburgTX.com.

Bobby Sessions Releases New EP “RVLTN-Chapter 2: The Art Of Resistance”

“Bobby Sessions has a lot to say and it’s often about the condition of Black America. With an elastic flow and impassioned lyrics, the 20-something Dallas native acts as a self-contained Black Lives Matter rally as he channels the anger and despair that accompany the cycle of systematic racism.” –XXL

“Sessions is not afraid of the reactions that may come from those who feel the content is too much. It’s an audacious attempt but in a genre that glorifies the money and clout, the message that Sessions is spreading is a much needed statement.” – BILLBOARD

“Sessions confronts racism with a captivating flow that’s both acrimonious and awe-inspiring.” –NPR Music

Revolutionary Dallas rapper Bobby Sessions–the firebrand Def Jam MC hot off the title track from the buzzworthy film and soundtrack The Hate U Give–drops his second EP RVLTN-Chapter 2: The Art Of Resistance via Def Jam Recordings.

The Art of Renaissance follows RVLTN-Chapter 1: The Divided States of AmeriKKKa (released in July), Sessions’ debut EP, which included his first two Def Jam single and video releases of earlier this year, “Like Me” and “Pick A Side.” With hard-hitting production on The Art of Resistance PicnicTyme, Audio Anthem, and RC Williams, Sessions’ aggressive, authentic, soulful sound harkens back to the roots and origins of classic hip-hop.

On The Art of Resistance, Sessions continues to rip open the ongoing oppression of African-Americans in our society sand gets to the root of race issues in our country. Throughout both EPs, he has worked toward his self-possessed goal of “taking the politically incorrect conversations from the barbershop and expressing them through music.”

“My RVLTN EP series,” Sessions has said, “is about taking the politically incorrect conversations from the barbershop and expressing them through music.” He went on to explain that Chapter 1 highlights the root of race issues in this country. It addresses while supremacy, systematic oppression, as well as introspective realizations about the responsibility of becoming a leader. RVLTN will continue to unfold and evolve throughout upcoming chapters in my quest for viable solutions, black empowerment, and justice.

In October-November, Sessions was part of the powerful roster of next-generation Def Jam stars–also including Beau Young Prince, Casanova, DaniLeigh, Fetty Luciano, and YK Osiris–presented by Def Jam Recordings in collaboration with DTLR VILLA and Levi Strauss & Co., on DTLR’s 5th annual HBCU tour of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

RVLTN–Chapter 2: The Art of Resistance track list;

  1. On Your Face
  2. Same Oh
  3. Material Lies
  4. Gold Shackles (Interlude)
  5. Dirt On Your Trophies
  6. Lights featuring ZYAH

About Bobby Sessions:

On December 31, 2014, Bobby Sessions quit his job to pursue his dream of becoming a recording artist full-time. Exactly one year later, he released his debut indie album the Law of Attraction (LOA), a passionate and fiery project influenced by the artists he grew up on as a kid from Dallas, Texas–from Jay-Z to James Brown to N.E.R.D. The hunger he has for motivating people through his words can’t be ignored: it’s in each and every song, interview, and performance. A blistering, concentrated lyricist and speaker, Sessions is constantly focused and determined to attract the energy of those around him–whether onstage performing for fans or in the studio focused on his craft. LOA was followed by a second album, grateful, a jazzy, self-aware reminder to be thankful. “Every freedom, every privilege, every great thing happening in our lives, down to your eyesight, each breath…we should put 100% of our energy into being grateful for that,” Sessions said.

His 2018 signing to Def Jam Recordings, and the arrival of “Like Me” and “Pick A Side” early in the year, set the stage for RVLTN-Chapter 1: The Divided States of AmeriKKKa (released in July), and RVLTN-Chapter 2: The Art Of Resistance (November).

Karlsruhe

The winter fairy tale of Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe’s Christmas market immerses visitors in a winter wonderland

When Santa Claus flies above the cozy gabled houses and the crowded streets on his reindeer-drawn sleigh, you know that it is Christmas time in Karlsruhe! Karlsruhe’s “Christkindlesmarkt” invites visitors to step into a winter fairy tale from November 28 to December 23, 2017. But isn’t this just another German Christmas market? Not at all! The fan-shaped city enchants its visitors with a mix of sparkling winter wonderland, German “Gemütlichkeit” and an extraordinary program.

Mulled wine, roasted almonds and Christmas cookies are just the beginning of any visit to Karlsruhe’s Christmas market. Talking fairy-tale houses and a train ride through a magical forest will bring a glint of excitement to children’s eyes. An imposing pyramid of lights illuminates the Marktplatz (market square). Decorated stalls invite visitors to indulge in regional delicacies such as dumplings with sauerkraut. The “Glühweinwäldchen” (mulled wine copse) seduces visitors’ taste buds with its Christmas treats.

Are you dreaming of more than just a cozy “Waldweihnacht” (woodland Christmas)? How about a romantic horse-carriage ride to the ice rink directly in front of the illuminated baroque castle of Karlsruhe? Thomas Jefferson had already acknowledged the enchanting effect of Karlsruhe’s castle and its fan-shaped street layout by basing his design of Washington, D.C. on it. Nowadays, visitors to the Christmas market can skate on the second largest open-air ice rink in Germany, which includes a special beginners’ area, a curling sheet and a circular path beneath the illuminated trees. And the cozy “Eiszeit-Stube” (ice lounge) lets you enjoy good food surrounded by thousands of lights.

Those interested in a cultural program should take their time at the Staatliche Kunsthalle (The State Art Gallery). “Cézanne – Metamorphoses”, the exhibition featuring French art, takes a fresh look at Cézanne’s bright landscapes, bathers, portraits and still-life paintings. Apart from admiring great art, visitors can also buy exquisite modern and traditional artisan craftwork at the beautifully decorated stalls in the city center.

Only a few minutes away from Karlsruhe, fans of the medieval period will find the perfect place: the historic Christmas market just outside Karlsburg Castle bathed in the soft glow of candlelight and the warmth of bonfires presents a truly historical atmosphere with its artists, musicians, craftsmen and storytellers. A medieval camp, a fire show and swordplay top off the entertainment program. Visitors are also invited to join in the spectacle: shooting crossbow bolts or riding an ancient carousel.

About Karlsruhe:

Karlsruhe, formerly the capital of Baden, lies in southwest Germany, on the western flank of Baden-Württemberg. Situated adjacent to the mighty river Rhine, the city is close to the border with France. The climate is very pleasant – its location on the Rhine Plain makes Karlsruhe one of the sunniest and warmest cities in Germany. Founded by Margrave Charles William nearly 300 years ago, the city’s plan resembles that of Paris, with streets laid out in rays, like the ribs of a fan, radiating from a central point that is the margrave’s palace. The renowned 18th century city planner L’Enfant liked Karlsruhe’s design so much that he incorporated its elements into his plans for Washington, D.C.
