ANDREW LLOYD: THE PLATINUM COLLECTION

In celebration of his 70th birthday, ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER UNMASKED: THE PLATINUM COLLECTION was recently released through UMe / Polydor.

As one of the most successful composers of the modern era, Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s repertoire includes some of the world’s most celebrated musicals; Sunset Boulevard, Cats, Aspects Of Love, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Starlight Express, The Phantom of The OperaSchool of Rock and Love Never Dies – to name but a few.

Last year, Lloyd Webber became the only person to equal the record set in 1953 by Rodgers & Hammerstein with four shows running concurrently on Broadway (Sunset Boulevard, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera and School of Rock). Two of his shows are currently running in both Broadway and the West End: School Of Rock and The Phantom of the Opera, and his musicals have grossed more than $13.6  billion and have been watched by 302 million people across 44 countries. He has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide.

The collection is personally curated and overseen by Lloyd Webber to include classics from his earliest work starting with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat through his most recent School of Rock.

Of the new album, Lloyd Webber says: “I owe everyone involved in putting this compilation together a huge thank you.  A vast amount of thought has evidently gone into selecting tracks from my almost fifty year old career. This compilation brings back a heap of memories – it has made this ancient composer very happy.  I particularly love the new tracks and of course I love the orchestral suites. There’s nothing a composer likes more than hearing their melodies played by a cracking orchestra.”

Newly recorded songs from superstar artists Lana Del Rey (“You Must Love Me”, Evita), Nicole Scherzinger (“Memory”, Cats) and Gregory Porter (“Light at the End of the Tunnel”, Starlight Express) and add to the collection of his cherished works from the past five decades.

Of Lloyd Webber, Lana Del Rey says, “Andrew Lloyd Webber has been one of my primary inspirations in music, so to do a cover of one of his songs is a dream.”

Gregory Porter also expresses his admiration, “Andrew is an icon of not only musical theatre, but he’s an icon of music, our culture, and of our human experience.”

The Cats classic “Memory” by Nicole Scherzinger is available now as an instant grat track. Of being on the album, Scherzinger says, “Andrew’s music absolutely influenced me as an artist… It’s hard for me to fathom that I’m a part of one of Andrew’s career defining albums. That is in itself career defining for me. It’s a dream, and a lifelong accomplishment.”

The set also contains recordings by world-class performers such as Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, Michael Ball, and released for the first time, Beyonce singing “Learn To Be Lonely” from the 2005 Academy Awards with Lloyd Webber accompanying on piano.

UNMASKED: THE PLATINUM COLLECTION is available as 2 CD and 4 CD editions. The 4-disc version contains an exclusive 40-page book with a personally penned introduction from Lloyd Webber and in-depth notes on each track, written by respected theatre critic and Lloyd Webber biographer Michael Coveney, together with tributes from Barbra Streisand and Glenn Close among others.

The fourth disc encompasses a mix of overtures and showstoppers from Lloyd Webber‘s key works, as well as newly created orchestral suites. The five new orchestral suites have been specially prepared from existing recordings, emphasising the grand orchestral aspects of his work. All CDs were mastered at Abbey Road Studios.

Lloyd Webber‘s productions have sold more than 330 million tickets worldwide. The Phantom of the Opera is the longest-running show on Broadway and second longest-running show in West End history. Cats and The Phantom of the Opera are two of Broadway’s four highest grossing shows. The Phantom of the Opera original cast album is the No. 1 Broadway album of all time in the U.S. and the #175 biggest seller among ALL albums of the SoundScan era in the U.S.  In addition to his worldwide sales and audiences, Lloyd Webber has been recognised by critics and peers with numerous accolades and awards including seven Oliviers, seven Tonys, three Grammys, one Golden Globe and an Oscar.

SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM OUT 3/30 – NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER

“Its opening uses a lone voice above sustained keyboard chords; by the end, horns and a choir have joined in without disturbing the dignified farewell.” – The New York Times

Her has shared the music video for their new single “We Choose”, directed by Antoine Poulet and Giorgio Martinoli. “We Choose” is the Her’s first release since the untimely passing of co-founder Simon Carpentier following a long bout with cancer. On “We Choose,” Victor Solf carries haunting verses into a hypnotic refrain with an airy sonic palette and classic soul style punctuated by Carpentier’s final vocal performance. The new song and video also herald the arrival of their anxiously awaited self-titled full-length debut, Her [Republic Records] — out March 30, 2018 and available now for pre-order, here.

The video for “We Choose” was shot in Paris, in the prestigious Palais d’Iéna and was directed by Giorgio Martinoli (Creative Director at l’Optimum and l’Officiel) and Antoine Poulet (who has worked with Louis Vuitton, Yves St Laurent, and on videos for Lana Del Rey, Woodkid and The Shoes). On the song and video, Her’s Victor Solf explains,

‘We Choose’ was the first Her song we wrote after our previous band ended. We wrote it overnight. It was a statement about why we were continuing and about this strong faith we had into our music because we couldn’t do anything else. It’s the song with which we were opening all of our live shows for the past 18 months, and it felt like the right moment to release it now—as a reason why Her needs to pursue this quest for hope and life.”

“The video tries to illustrate the impossible: the absence of Simon, half of Her and my closest collaborator for 10 years. There is a sort of beautiful melancholia to the video. The basic premise was ‘what would we do if Simon was still here?’ So everything is framed for two and meant for Simon to have a place of expression.”

““In the grander scheme, it’s a bridge between Her’s humble beginnings and their uncertain future where the question of moving forward continues to present itself. However, Solf approaches this challenge with the same determination as on Her’s first day.” – Billboard.com

While still in school, the half-German Victor and the French Simon met in 2007, bonded like long lost brothers, started making music together equally informed by old school soul a la Otis Redding and post-Yeezus hip-hop, and formed Her in 2015. Success followed as the breakout “Five Minutes” soundtracked Apple’s “Shot on iPhone” campaign and eventually generated over 6.7 million Spotify streams. The duo released a pair of EPs Her Tape #1 and Her Tape #2, spawning fan favorites such as “Quite Like,” “Union,” and “Her” and amassing over 20 million cumulative Spotify streams. Merging artfully seductive and provocative visuals and dreamy newer wave pop with a jazz undercurrent, the boys crisscrossed the globe in support of the EPs, including making waves stateside. In the middle of it all, unbeknownst to anyone but those closest to him, Simon lost a long, quiet, and arduous battle with cancer in August 2017. With his friend’s spirit always close by, Victor worked on what would become the duo’s 2018 major label full-length debut, Her [Republic Records].

‘The Complex Cover’ Features LANA DEL REY

THE COMPLEX COVER profiles Lana Del Rey on the heels of her recently released fourth studio effort Lust for Life. In the interview – filmed at the Prohibition era-inspired, Hollywood hotspot No Vacancy and produced in the nostalgia-inducing style of the 50s and 60s she’s known for – Del Rey opens up to Complex’s Noah Callahan-Bever about the album’s overall lighter tone, explains her decision to weave elements of the current political climate throughout the record, reflects on her experience collaborating with her friends, explores her growth as an artist, and more.

Lana Del Rey Quotes From The Complex Cover interview

 WM-lana_Del_Rey_Saccenti_294A9628_rgbBW

On the potential of her political songs alienating her core fan base

“You don’t negotiate when it comes to your work or your art. You stand totally firm and take the consequences. In terms of losing fans, I don’t care. Period.”

On how she’s grown as an artist since her first album Born to Die

“Maybe just the ability to integrate my own experiences with what I’m observing. To be able to reflect back, like a good mix of inner world [and] outer world.”

On the challenge of revealing a personal side musically as she achieved greater success

“I’ve never been somebody who turned away from really hard work… If I feel like I’m just not getting it right, I’ll just keep on trying different things until I feel like I’m hitting my stride in that department. I don’t know, finding your own path is not for the faint of heart…”

On infusing hip-hop into her album seamlessly

“I never feel like I’m not where I’m supposed to be… No matter who I’m with, I’m always doing my own thing. I can’t remember the last time I was in a club or somewhere and felt like, ‘Man, I’m not supposed to be here.’ I’ve been kind of doing it for so long, I feel like everybody I’m friends with, everyone I know just knows I’m all about the music.”
