May the Sky

By Vaughn Lowery

The emerging indie rock band, May the Sky [MTS], is based in Dayton, OH. Their exclusive, “Won” from the new EP Discoveries is an anthemic masterpiece which is reminiscent of the iconic Bohemian Rhapsody and some of their mantras. Hard hitting melodies alongside of dramatic drums and rhythmic guitar riffs. Brilliant lyrics coupled with effortless vocals and orchestration make this alternative ensemble ooze marketability. It’s been a long time since we have tripped upon a gem like MTS. Both epic and spellbinding.

Voyce Memos – “Catching Me in Stride”

Voyce Memos an indie group from Houston, Texas released their album Catching Me In Stride on April 19, 2019. With music similar to Tame Impala, Daft Punk, Phoenix, Radiohead and Death Cab For Cutie. The group is compromised of three people, Richard Borger, lead producer/audio engineer originally from Florida and currently working out of his own home studio (Meraki Recordings) in Houston, TX, began working shortly as a solo artist before meeting drummer, Stephen Mokulis, and multi-instrumentalist/producer, Akash Gupta. The group dedicated time primarily after their full-time work days and on weekends, turning casual jam sessions into a basis for songs and eventually recordings what would later become their first album.

Voyce Memos music captures the ideas of human changes and the decisions we make, especially in relationships, love, and self-understanding. Driving funky bass lines and guitar riffs, on top of ethereal vocals and mixed electronic/live drumming, meld into something to which everyone can relate and groove.

“This album, and musical endeavor in general stems from much introspection and self (and non-self) awareness. Sometimes a moment or series of events comes along in life that changes a lot of what you thought to be “true”, like the way things are supposed to be, or how you’re supposed to love, or where you’re supposed to work and live, etc. Opening a music studio, learning how to produce, and deciding to create an album was the result of that moment, and the album title “Catching Me in Stride” was the attempt at catching that type of emotion, especially when it came to relationships. The most exciting thing about it was that there was never a point where we decided to say “let’s stick to this type of music or sound or vocal.” We decided to let whatever came to mind and sound be exactly how it felt, and that lent itself to quite a variety of sounds on the album, while still being very much connected in theme. Us three, having various styles and influences growing up, ended up creating something we feel is quite it’s own. We know where we feel the influence when we hear it, but the end product always sounds unique and fresh. There are moments scattered throughout the album that bring out strong emotions, whether that belonging, confusion, sadness, anger, or understanding, and we believe it finally arrives at acceptance with the crescendo at the very end of the album on “Argentine.” This album has something for everyone in both musical taste and emotional connection and we hope you all enjoy it.”

The track list on the album includes:

1. Division
2. Quixotic
3. Hard Knot
4. Better Island
5. Benova
6. Indifferent
7. Whelmed (Interlude)

Your Music Calendar For 2019

If you have a ‘just take my money’ approach to music festivals and events each year, then putting money aside well in advance is probably advised when there are so many events to choose from. Creating a calendar with the events you’re most looking forward to, or have just penciled in out of curiosity, is the best way of allotting your hard-earned money.

With plenty of festivals and events on American soil, it’s worth taking a broader look, particularly if you happen to be a music fanatic with wanderlust. With that in mind, here’s a look at some interesting and big events across the globe this year.

The USA music scene

It almost seems controversial to call Coachella an ‘indie festival’ when artists like Ariana Grande are headlining it nowadays. However, with some nostalgia-fueling throwbacks such as Weezer, Aphex Twin and Wiz Khalifa taking the stage it’s one that’s worth putting yourself down on the waiting list if you enjoy your indie served with plenty of sunshine and glitter. Dress up your most glittering and outlandish outfits when heading to Coachella.

The UK music scene

The UK has a long history of producing exciting and innovative artists (just a few small names like David Bowie, The Beatles, and Adele). BBC Radio 1 even helped propel artists like Lana Del Rey into the mainstream, and British radio stations have exported many of our artists onto American soil over the generations. British music has also influenced American music, too, with the likes of The British Invasion.

Octavian is the name currently on everyone’s lips, and if you make a trip over he has plenty of dates across all of the UK’s major cities. If you go to see him in his native London, or any other great UK artists for that matter, make sure to check out ticket prices before they sell out.

London, however, is not all about concerts but also musicals and theater nights. Popular London musicals such as the Book of Mormon have been taking audiences and the press by storm and are well worth dropping in to see.

Music festivals such as V Festival, Reading and Glastonbury are also consistently star-studded events, if sometimes a little muddy.

The German music scene

If techno music is a secret passion of yours, then you won’t be surprised to hear that the Germans have that covered. Time Warp is a high-energy festival that’s dedicated to all things techno and dance. Getting your blood pumping over in Europe is also a great opportunity to get out and see some culture too, depending on how techno-crazy you are.

The Spanish music scene

Sun? Check. Beach? Check. A wide range of music royalty and up-and-comers? Check. Lana Del Rey joins a stellar line-up at the FIB Benicassim festival in sunny Spain. Jumping crowds and streamers make this the ideal summer getaway festival for those who want to hear some familiar sounds and maybe pick up a few new names. Music and sangria on the sand is a combination that’s well worth making a note of in your calendar.

Traveling for your festival or gig fix is the perfect combination of partying, music and vacations. You might also get to see some of your favorite performers who haven’t yet announced a US tour, or who might not for a long while.

Gab Strum “Fooling Around”

Gab Strum was 15 years old and on a tediously long family vacation with nothing to do but listen to Tycho and The Postal Service, when he opened his iPad and discovered Garageband and began building loops and messing with different sounds, creating music under the moniker, Japanese Wallpaper. When he was back from his holiday, he threw a song up on Triple J’s Unearthed website and Gab took home the top prize in the coveted “Unearthed High” competition, and was propelled into the spotlight.

His debut EP has since gone on to garner 20 million streams and found fans in Charli XCX, Flume, Gotye, Lily Allen, Chet Faker and Bombay Bicycle Club. His song, “Breathe In” was personally selected by Zach Braff to feature alongside indie luminaries like Bon Iver, The Shins and Cat Power in his highly acclaimed filmed and soundtrack Wish I Was Here, with his other tracks finding their way into scenes of shows like Offspring (Netflix), Catfish: The TV Show (MTV), Awkward (MTV), Made In Chelsea (E4) and Scream: The TV Series (MTV). He’s also garnered attention from NME, i-D Vice, HillyDilly, Indie Shuffle, EARMILK, Hype Machine and more.

Now 21 years old, the Melbourne based artist returns with, “Fooling Around” a hopeful track with a dizzying spell of synths and saccharine melodies, with textures of electronica layered over a lyrical narrative that sees Gab sing of self-confidence. The song is a call to arms to anyone who has ever felt the need to assert themselves, and the forthcoming record is a further exploration of that theme, with an introspective look into Gab’s own journey of identity. “It’s about me finding my place, and figuring out who I am and what I want to do, and how that functions in the world.

Bibi Saboia

Combining the soulful melodies of her angelical voice with the dynamics of acoustic elements and contemporary sounds, Bibi Saboia brings a new experience into the young generation of indie electro-pop music artists.

Brazilian singer/songwriter based in the United States, Bibi is the 3rd generation in a family of professional musicians and songwriters, having her talent unveiled in 2016, at the early age of 13, when she signed with Warner Music Brazil.

In 2017, after the release of her first single “Vc Só Sabe De Vc” followed by the EP “Tão Certa”, Bibi moved to the United States to pursuit for wider artistic possibilities and started to write her new songs in English.

For over a year now, she has been posting covers on her YouTube channel and has also started vlogging her life to show her fans and friends.

The Score Return with New Single “Stronger”

Rounding out a breakout, LA rock band The ScoreEddie Anthony and Edan Dover–unveil their new single “Stronger” via Republic Records. Get it here!

The Score siphoned a spirit of urgency into this forthcoming body of work. Inspired by rap-adjacent artists a la Post Malone and K. Flay, they amassed a growing arsenal of analog synths to “get away from the riff-based and stomp-clap organic drum sound and move to an evolving sound where the drum machines, synthesizers, and guitars worked together.”

Writing at a Hollywood and Vine spot, they joined forces with a bevy of high-profile collaborators, JT Daly, The Heavy, Adam Hawkins, and Dave Bassett and shocked that vision to life.

The song comes right in the middle of their Revolution Tour where they’ll be making stops are Brooklyn’s Rough Trade on September 25th and Los Angeles’ The Moroccan Lounge on October 18th, See full tour dates here.

The band stands out as a fiery genre-defying phenomenon, incinerating the lines between rock, pop, indie, and electronic. Powered by ubiquitous anthems such as “Oh My Love,” “Legend,” and “Unstoppable,” the boys racked up 600 million cumulative streams within three years’ time over the course of two EPs–Unstoppable and Myths & Legends.

As they ignited venues across North America, in addition their music has been used in campaigns for Jeep, NBA, and beyond.

Courtney Cooper New Album “Waves” Out Now
