Free Wheelchair Mission Raises $1.8 million at Miracle of Mobility Gala

Inspirational TV Personality Victoria Arlen Delivers Message of Hope

Guests use VR Glasses to be Transported to Guatemalan Village

An unforgettable evening on July 25th filled with surprises, heartfelt inspiration and the pure joy of giving culminated with Free Wheelchair Mission (FWM) receiving over $1.8 million in donations in one night – the most ever at this event and enough to transform the lives of more than 22,500 individuals living with disabilities in under-resourced nations around the world. Already, the humanitarian nonprofit has distributed 1.2 million wheelchairs around the world.

The 600-plus who attended the 16th annual Miracle of Mobility gala at Segerstrom Center of the Arts were treated to a fabulous gala evening PLUS three unique opportunities:

1) listening to television personality and gold medalist Victoria Arlen, whose own story of regaining mobility is incredible

2) journeying virtually to a small Guatemalan village using Oculus VR glasses and feeling like they are on a mission to distribute wheelchairs

3) taking part in an exciting live auction where generous donors bought wheelchairs for individuals living with a disability in an under-resourced nation. Each $80 donation will buy one wheelchair – changing that person’s life forever as he or she begins a life of mobility.

Guests enjoyed an internationally themed cocktail reception with food stations offering global cuisine, a silent auction filled with an eclectic array of gifts and experiences, a performance by Infinite Flow, the first wheelchair dance company in the world, and inspirational remarks from Free Wheelchair Founder and President Don Schoendorfer.

The evening’s special guest, 24-year-old Victoria Arlen, holds impressive credentials: ESPN host, Paralympics gold medalist, Dancing with the Stars semi-finalist, author and most recently, co-host of the NBC TV’s American Ninja Warrior Junior.  Those credentials would be impressive for anyone but considering that Victoria was struck by two rare neurological diseases at the age of 11, causing her to be trapped in her body in a minimally conscious state for four years, it is an incredible turnaround.

Victoria spoke at the gala about her journey, including the four years when doctors doubted that she would ever return and the subsequent several years when she fought back to begin life again. She offered a message of hope and the importance of being thankful for what you have.

“When you focus on what you still have, you will find it changes your perspective, and that change in perspective creates hope. Hope that tomorrow will be just a bit better than today and when you take that hope, and mix in your own hard work, lots and lots of hard work, I believe you will find yourself back on the path to living out your own dreams.”

Victoria credits her parents with the hope that saved her. “Over and over doctors told my parents they needed to accept the very real possibility that I would not survive and, even if I did, the Victoria they once knew was not coming back. And while my family was willing to accept the diagnosis, they refused to throw up their hands and accept that this was all my future had in store. They accepted the diagnosis, but NOT the prognosis,” Victoria related.

“Somehow, they believed I was not a lost cause. I now believe that it was their refusal to accept that prognosis that brought me back to life.”

Following Victoria’s talk, a robust live auction led to the donation of more than 21,900 wheelchairs to be built and distributed in 93 countries around the world. In 2017, Free Wheelchair Mission reached the milestone of one million wheelchairs distributed and now is pursuing its goal of reaching the next million by 2025.

“Tonight’s gala was successful for so many reasons, most notably the many volunteers who help us bring the gift of mobility to people living with disabilities around the world and the many donors who embrace our mission and recognize how even a simple $80 donation can change a life forever, “ said Free Wheelchair Mission CEO Nuka Solomon.

“The gift from Free Wheelchair Mission provides the mobility that allows each recipient to begin a new life – whether it’s taking care of themselves, attending school or working – and we find that the vitality of the entire family and community are changed too,” Solomon added.

Key sponsors of the gala included Transformation Sponsors: Advisors Mortgage Group and The McDonald Family; Freedom Sponsors: The Hummelberg Family, The Morris Family Foundation, Diamond Hill Capital Management, KPMG and PR Construction. The full list of sponsors can be found here.

Just $80, the cost to manufacture and deliver one wheelchair, can change a person’s life forever. Working as a Party Planner

If you’re reading this, you’re probably thinking about getting into party planning. Odds are, you’ve always been a great host or a “get this party started” kind of person and you’re wondering if you should turn it into a career. You might be pondering: what’s working as party planner actually like? Is it all fun and parties all of the time?

The truth is, every day is different. On the busiest of days, you’re in the office from the crack of dawn and out at parties and launches until late hours of the night. It can be exhausting at times, but the thrill of seeing your event come off just as you’d planned it is totally worth it. Then there’s more low-key days, of course. Like any job, there are good days and there are bad days, and a lot of it is hard work.

So, what’s it all like?

Non-event Days
As mentioned before, not every day as a party planner will be an event day. Weird to think about, but more often than not you’ll have a non-event day than a party day. Fortunately, not every day is as jam packed as the ones where you’re up early and out late. Still, a regular day has you busy with tasks.

Clients and Planning
On these days you’re probably touching base with a lot of your clients as well as going over details for events. There’s researching and sourcing, holding meetings with the clients, and scoping out venue requirements as well as caterers.

Creating themes, schedules, and count-down to-do lists are standard in the event-planning world. The planning of events basically comes down to minute details, so you have to be on top of all aspects of the event. It’s also incredibly useful look into coverages for your events. You never know when elements of an event or client will go downhill. Business insurance for party planners is an absolute must. That includes invitations, arrivals, catering, decoration, staffing, and so much more.

Correspondence
Then there’s other normal work stuff like e-mailing, figuring out contracts, and coordinating teams. Because you’ll probably be working on a few projects at once, upkeep of communication with clients is crucial. You’ll have to set aside some time every day or so to update clients.

Additionally, there’s the part of the job where you have to seek out new clients. You’ll need to prepare proposals for your potential clients and probably do some promotion and marketing as well.

Event Day
Once event day comes around, you’ll be working flat out from the crack of dawn to the end of night (or, depending on when the event ends). Event day includes:

• Arriving early.
• Setting up and ensuring vendors and contractors are set up.
• Confirming staff knows what to do to make sure the event runs smoothly.
• Helping attendees in arrival.
• Overseeing the schedule and troubleshooting problems that arise with a backup plan (Always be sure to have a back-up plan!)
• Evaluating the event based on attendees, those who’ve commissioned the party, and yourself. Learn from each event to do better at the next.
• Be professional and excited. It’s imperative to wear a smile on event day! Even if you’re not feeling it, fake it ‘til you make it.

Overall, being a party planner can be different depending on the day. What you can definitely expect in the short term is a lot of planning and correspondence. Non-event day hours can look much like standard 9-5 days, but there’ll be longer days leading up to an event day. You’ll have a relatively flexible schedule, with some weekend days.

If you’ve made it this far, it might be time to seriously consider this as a career. Not everyone is gifted with hosting capabilities. With being a party planner, you’ll have flexibility in your schedule and freedom to pull off amazing events. Just know that you have to be meticulous in your planning, stay up to date with correspondence, and don’t skimp on business insurance.

With any luck, you’ll parties will be the talk of the town!

Abu Dhabi x World Ocean Summit 2019

Government of Abu Dhabi Announced as Host of World Ocean Summit 2019.

This year’s World Ocean Summit, held in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, has brought together over 500 leaders from the private sector, civil society and government to explore the development of a sustainable ocean economy through innovative financing and technologies as well as bold new efforts to implement the world’s sustainability commitments. It is the largest World Ocean Summit yet, and underscores The Economist Group’s doubling down on this topic, in no small part through announcing the launch of the World Ocean Initiative, an effort that will translate the momentum and focus of the World Ocean Summit into a year-round programme on the ocean that leverages the full capabilities of The Economist Group.

Carrying this momentum forward, The Economist Group is pleased to announce the Government of Abu Dhabi as the host of World Ocean Summit 2019. Abu Dhabi has a close relationship with the ocean, through its history as a centre for pearl diving, its resilient coral reefs and its mangroves sea grass meadows that provide valuable services in the face of climate change.

Bringing the World Ocean Summit to Abu Dhabi presents a unique opportunity to amplify the conversations on the sustainable development of the ocean in the Middle East and the wider region, and equally provides a platform for Abu Dhabi to share its innovative approaches to conservation, and developing a vibrant and sustainable ocean economy, with the rest of the world.

The challenges facing the ocean are global, and the World Ocean Summit 2019, which will be held March 5th-7th, will bring the bold discussions and diverse audiences that characterise the World Ocean Summit into a new part of the world, and host stimulating conversations on the topics of ocean financing, governance and innovation. A key priority for World Ocean Summit 2019 will be to foster greater cooperation and collaboration between different groups, and to serve as a bridge between the development of economic policies and protecting the marine environment. It intends to build a truly global community for the creation of a sustainable ocean economy. Through the World Ocean Initiative, The Economist Group will build a programme of work across these topics and themes throughout 2018 to ensure that we continue to play a role in fostering progress against the global community’s commitments on the ocean.
