Women Dominating the World of Travel

Badass Women Who Are Dominating the World of Adventure Travel

In honor of International Women’s Day, Friday March 8, 2019, these inspiring travel professionals are working to make outdoor travel a more balanced place for women around the world.

This Mar. 8, 2019 is International Women’s Day (IWD), and the theme is #BalanceforBetter, focusing on how a more gender-balanced world will create a better working environment for everyone. It couldn’t come at a better time; in the outdoor travel industry, women have been historically under-represented – particularly in leadership positions. According to The Adventure Travel Trade Association’s report “Out in Front: Tracking Women’s Leadership in Adventure Travel,” while women make up 60-70% of the travel industry, only 38% of board positions are held by females in the adventure sector, and there are significantly fewer female guides on average, especially in developing destinations.

However, women are beginning to break down the barriers of this male-dominated sector, and along with “The Rise of the Female Adventurer” and women’s-only travel providers comes a marked increase in women taking on more leadership roles, and challenging the status quo.

Here are just a handful of driven, fearless women from around the world who are working every day to make their mark in adventure travel:

Payal Mehta

Expedition Leader – India, Nepal & Bhutan

Natural Habitat Adventures

Payal Mehta may have spent her childhood in urban Mumbai, but her lifelong love for the outdoors has led her to become a Nat Hab Expedition Leader, guiding travelers throughout the remote and wild areas of India, Nepal and Bhutan. Once a member of an elite training program for India safari guides, Payal started leading tours in India’s Kanha National Park, and is now a multi-disciplined wilderness specialist and trained mountaineer. As a Nat Hab guide, Payal interprets the nature and local culture she and her groups explore together, as well as being a translator, teacher and storyteller – all while ensuring the trip runs smoothly.

Badass Claim to Fame: “I was part of an all-women mountaineering expedition up the 6420-metre-high Mt. White Sail in the Himalayas. We ended up in a serious rescue situation on our way back when our guide suffered high altitude pulmonary edema. But we all made it back alive!”

Future Goals: “I’d love to have my own wildlife tourism project near a forest. One that is much more than a commercial outfit, that truly involves everyone in the local community, is a center for learning and is run with high standards of environmental consciousness.”

What IWD Means to Payal: “It’s saluting and celebrating all the women of the past who fought for women’s place in society, and because of whom I get to enjoy my life as it is today. It also brings a hope that the message will continue to spread and there will be further change in attitudes in the future.”

Maritza Chacacanta

Deputy Operations Manager – Treks, Inca Trail

Exodus Travels

Maritza Chacanta is a proud single mother and a former Inca Trail Guide who has worked her way up to become the Deputy Operations Manager for Exodus Travels. When Maritza was first told how challenging it was to become an Exodus guide (applicants have to take special training courses and be among the best guides in order to be hired), she became determined to secure the coveted role. After years of hard work and dedication, Maritza made good on her promise to herself – and is now not only leading Exodus Travels’ signature Inca treks, but managing the operations from start to finish while collaborating with porters, horse wranglers, and guides.

Badass Claim to Fame: “Being a single mom is one of the things I’m proudest of. Nowadays, women do not need a man to push ahead. To the single mothers out there: it’s important to know that you are not alone. You can have a successful career while being a successful mom.”

Future Goals: “To develop some projects related to the environment (reforestation, clean campaigns, etc.), and train our staff on how important it is to take care the environment – not only to benefit our treks, but to share the results with our communities.”

What IWD Means to Maritza: “It means rights and gender equality. [It’s the ability to] make your decisions – and be free from violence and discrimination.”

Alice Goodridge

Adventure Coordinator – Scotland

Wilderness Scotland

Alice Goodridge keeps a sledgehammer in her car during the winter, so she can go swimming anytime, anywhere – no matter how frozen the lochs may be. That’s because as an extreme cold water swimmer, she isn’t afraid of a little physical discomfort – which is part of what made her want to become an Adventure Coordinator for Wilderness Scotland.

The company runs the type of trips Alice always wanted to experience herself, which means she now combines her love of the great outdoors with her expertise in organizing sustainability and adventure holidays.

Badass Claim to Fame: “My long distance and cold-water swims. I swam the 21-mile English Channel in 2012 and the length of the 22-mile Loch Lomond in 2018, which took place overnight from 6 p.m. – 8 a.m. the next morning. I also completed an Ice Mile last year, which was a mile in water less than 5 C° without a wetsuit.”

Future Goals: “I want to challenge myself in a discipline I am not so familiar with. I am currently working through my sea kayaking qualifications, with the hope of becoming a sea kayak guide in the future. Paddling or swimming… any excuse to spend more time on/in the water! “

What IWD Means to Alice: “There is still a lot of inequality in the outdoor activity sector and International Women’s Day mean taking a closer look and seeing what can be done about it. UK society is 51% female. Yet we know that there are less women and girls participating in the types of outdoor activities likely to lead to the interest, skill and motivation to pursue a career in this area. I would like to see greater equality in the outdoor activity sector and a higher percentage of female guides leading walking, biking and paddling trips in the UK.”

Laura Adams

Explorer, Consultant & Artist – BC, Canada

Adventure Canada

Laura Adams, an Adventure Canada expedition guide, is also a professional member of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides and the Canadian Avalanche Association and was the fifth woman in Canada to become a fully certified winter Ski Guide. She also has a Masters degree in Leadership, with her research focused on decision making and risk management in mountain environments. In her spare time, Laura mentors people who aspire to a career in the professional mountain guiding industry, and coaches women in building leadership and backcountry skills.

Badass Claim to Fame: “In January 2019 I lead a small group expedition to Northern China; close to the borders of Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia to experience the ancient Tuvan mountain culture, and to ski-tour amongst the ‘Golden’ mountains of the region. We went during a time when China/Canada relations were tense, which added a great deal to the risk of traveling to this little-known part of the world. We all embraced the challenges with faith and endurance, and were rewarded with a remarkable experience of awe, cooperation, trust, and unity.”

Future Goals: I am now focusing my career to increasing awareness, stewardship and leadership of these special places and cultures; through expeditions, my art and speaking/presentations.

What IWD Means to Laura: “International Women’s Day calls on us to give thanks and appreciation for the women in our lives and communities who live life with courage, integrity, and grace, who don’t just accept the way things are, and who make a genuine difference in the lives of themselves and others. It’s a day to inspire and cultivate qualities in emerging women around us who have big dreams and can make their ideas real.”

The Quail × A Motorsports Gathering

The premier automotive event will welcome four featured classes — “The Great Lancias,” “50th Anniversary of the Espada & Islero,” “70 Years of the Iconic Porsche 356” and “The Alois Ruf Reunion” — during its Monterey Car Week Event held at Quail Lodge & Golf Club on August 24, 2018

Today, The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering has officially announced four featured classes for its 16th-anniversary celebration on Friday, August 24, 2018. Recognizing Italian heritage and German innovation, the special selection will include “The Great Lancias,” “50th Anniversary of the Espada & Islero,” “70 Years of the Iconic Porsche 356” and “The Alois Ruf Reunion.”

“The Great Lancias” class will be highlighted by notable models that exemplify the Italian manufacturer’s strong rally heritage. Key vehicles will include a 1974 Stratos HF Group IV, a 1955 Aurelia B24S and a 1988 Delta Intergrale 8V.

Meanwhile, the “50th Anniversary of the Espada & Islero” class will pay tribute to two of Lamborghini’s most timeless V12-powered touring cars: the low-production Islero GT and the 2+2 Espada that became one of Sant’Agata’s best-selling models. Half a century after both models debuted at the Geneva Motor Show, 21 of these iconic vehicles will be on display.

The Quail will also celebrate German automotive history and legacy through the special “70 Years of the Iconic Porsche 356” class. The display will include noteworthy examples of the marque’s first production sports cars such as a 1951 356 Pre-A Split Window, a 1958 356 A Speedster, a 1965 356 C Coupe and other seminal vehicles from the legendary marque.

“The Alois Ruf Reunion” will focus on German innovation through a selection of sports cars from the legendary Pfaffenhausen manufacturer and tuner. Included in the class will be the 1988 CTR “Yellowbird” #001, freshly restored by RUF themselves. The car will be presented alongside the new 710 horsepower CTR, making its North American debut. Along with the old and new CTR, several other prominent RUF vehicles will grace the event — from the CTR2 to the RCT and many more.

“To amp up the anticipation surrounding The Quail, we are featuring four new classes for car enthusiasts from around the world to enjoy,” said Gordon McCall, Director of Motorsports for The Peninsula Signature Events. “Guests of the show will be delighted to see a remarkable selection of cars that represent the Italian and German perspectives of automotive excellence.”

Keeping with tradition, these featured classes will complement the familiar roster of pre- and post-war classes as they line the prestigious greens of Quail Lodge & Golf Club.

In addition to the world-class selection of vehicles, The Quail will offer an array of culinary pavilions, award-winning wines and spirits and a Fireside Chat Series in the elegant yet family- and pet-friendly environment. Guests will also be invited to attend the Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction taking place concurrently on the Quail Lodge Farm Field.

The event is sold out; however, if an individual has missed the opportunity to purchase tickets, they may submit a waitlist request online. Other options for admission include The QuailHelicopter Ticket and The QuailCharitable Patron Ticket, which are still available for purchase. The Path to the Cap Starring D’Angelo Russell

New Era Cap Premieres “The Path to the Cap”

Starring NBA Superstar D’Angelo Russell

A film celebrating the New Era Cap NBA Authentics: Draft Series Collection

June 19, 2018, Buffalo, New York – On the week of the NBA Draft, New Era Cap Co. presents “The Path to the Cap”: a never-before-seen exploration of NBA superstar and 2015 NBA Draft second overall pick D’Angelo Russell’s journey from neighborhood baller to NBA professional athlete. Produced by the international sports and lifestyle brand, the film celebrates the moment Russell donned his new team’s hat – a symbol of success after a young lifetimes’ worth of perseverance and hard work. This year, 60 potential stars will make that same leap, and each draftee will mark their moment in a cap from New Era’s NBA Authentics: Draft Series Collection.

Many will watch as the athletes put on their hats, but few know what the true path to the cap entails – which is why New Era Cap Co. travels back to Russell’s roots in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky tracing his NBA success story to its origin point. Candid interviews with his parents and two brothers give a behind-the-scenes look at what drove Russell, including a previously unseen sibling rivalry that spawned his competitive spirit.

“The feeling of getting drafted and putting on that team hat was something I dreamed about forever. I worked my entire life to put on that cap,” said Russell. “It is an incredible honor to have worked alongside New Era to tell the story of how I got to that moment, and I’m excited for every player in this year’s draft class to realize that same dream.”

“The Path to the Cap” celebrates New Era’s ongoing partnership with the league around the NBA Draft. In 2018, the brand introduces new editions of the emblematic lids; in addition to individual team logos and colorways, each hat in the collection features a series of unique design elements, featuring custom patches and pins that pay homage to the local city neighborhoods that host the NBA’s 30 teams.

“The NBA Authentics: Draft Series collection is New Era Cap’s most exciting NBA collection to date,” said Mark Maidment, Senior Vice President, Brand at New Era Cap. “We wanted to create visual representations of the excitement these young men will feel for their new homes and fan families. The cap marks the end of their first path and the beginning of the next: the opportunity to represent each of these cities come opening night.”

Hendrik Giesler’s Travel Tips

Hendrik Giesler became an overnight sensation during the 2014 World Cup. During the finals, Germany vs. Argentina, the camera crossed to a young man in the stadium with a German flag on his cheeks and the sexy young man caught the attention of all Germany. Everyone wanted to find the mystery guy, and the hunt began. Soon the global power of the internet found him. Unaware what was happening online, Hendrik woke and was surprised to find 45,000 new followers on Instagram (by end of day it had grown to 53,000) and had media contacting him relentlessly. Someone mistakenly thought Hendrik was the mystery #Germanboy and told the world.

“My photo was in all of the media; TV, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tumbler. It was so overwhelming as I grew up in a village of 500 people. All of a sudden the world knew who I was and where I lived,” shared Hendrik.

Hendrik was nineteen, living a humble life in a small German town. A young guy, who at the time was volunteering to help people living with disabilities. “I worried I needed to change my name because it was just too much attention too quickly.”

However this crazy media blitz became the birth of his career as a digital influencer. Three years later, when he was in Melbourne, Australia, he decided to build off the buzz and share his travel and fashion experiences on Instagram. His globetrotting lifestyle helped him to become very popular on Instagram with over 158,000 engaged followers.

The young influencer has travelled to over 26 countries so far, which includes Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Morocco, Cape Town, Marrakesh, USA, France, Spain, Bali, Thailand, Netherlands, Denmark, Poland, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, Croatia, Montenegro, England, Norway, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Columbia. His fans turn to him for travel, fashion, and beauty advice daily. Take a look at Hendrik’s guide to traveling in style!

How to pack the essentials and travel in style

We all want to travel in style so packing the fashion essentials is vital when exploring the world as you not only want to have the right outfits for the weather, you also want the right outfits to match various occasions.

You should keep in mind that you need space in your suitcase for shopping. You can’t travel to an exotic location without buying at least one local item! I have found some incredible items to add to my wardrobe from traveling so you want to leave enough space for shopping.

Packing the fashion essentials

Since I’m traveling a lot for work, I always have to think about my outfits and what to pack, as I need the right mix of work clothes vs. casual clothes. In the past, I have made mistakes of over-packing. When I traveled to Thailand, I stuffed my suitcase with all of the T-shirts and shorts I owned; yet in the end, most were left unworn in my suitcase as I only wore my favorite pieces and didn’t have space for anything else. So I quickly learned: LESS is MORE. I realized that it’s better to bring a FEW of your favorite essential pieces like a pair of blue jeans, black shorts and a couple of basic white shirts along with a good pair of sneakers. The goal here is these few items will complement all sorts of outfits and styles.

When packing, a bit of outfit planning can make life easier: a pair of sunglasses and your favorite accessories like watches can jazz up every outfit. When deciding what to bring along with me on vacation, I have used my past Instagram posts as inspiration. Since taking photos is a large part of my travels, I look at previous posts to help me pack, and I make sure I bring a few picture perfect pieces so I know I have the clothes when it comes time for my signature posts.

For example, before I went to Marrakech, I made sure that I saved all of my favorite photos on Instagram, so I packed the right outfits for the perfect Insta pic. Since social media is such a big thing for us millennials, I wanted to make sure that my outfit is on point. Marrakech is known for its desert brown and orange colors, so I planned my outfits accordingly.

One small thing I always pack and it has saved my life…SUNSCREEN!  Make sure you pack sunscreen. You don’t want to get burned. From my experience traveling to so many unique locations, it is hard to estimate the strength of the sun. The sun is sexy, but it does crazy damage to your skin. It can literally ruin your vacation if you are not prepared. I say this because I’ve had a hard time finding sunscreen for my skin type when I travel. Plan ahead and come prepared. It is small item but I am 24 years old, and I want to stay looking 24 years old 😉

Also, when buying your sunscreen before you leave, look into purchasing travel sizes for your everyday toiletries so you can leave them there after your holiday. Bam, more room in your luggage when you fly home for shopping.

Can you do laundry?!

If yes, it is a live saver. You can pack a lot less, but you can re-use the essentials you bring. No one knows whom you are when you travel; so re-wearing your favorite pieces are acceptable as no one notices. That said, you want them clean. My advice is to NEVER use the hotel laundry service. They charge insane prices to wash your clothes. INSANE. Just ask for the closest laundromat. Trust me, it will take one hour, but it saves you so much in the long run.

I love to travel and have traveled to over 26 countries so far this is my fashion travel advice. It is all about the preparation before leaving that ensures you travel in style and enjoy your vacation.

Over the next couple of months, he will be traveling to Morocco, Tanzania, and Egypt and give daily updates on his travel, food and fashion experiences. To see what adventures he gets up to make sure you follow him on Instagram!

“impulses, restraints, tones”

“impulses, restraints, tones” New Compositions by Hannah Quinlivan

Opening Reception: March 1, 2018, 6-8pm
Exhibition Dates: March 1 – April 20, 2018

February 16, 2018 (New York, NY) – JanKossen Contemporary is pleased to present impulses, restraints, tones an exhibition by Australian contemporary artist, Hannah Quinlivan. impulses, restraints, tones is the artist’s first exhibition in New York and will be on view from March 1 – April 20, 2018 with an opening reception on March 1 from 6-8pm.

Best known for her work within the movement of experimental drawing, Quinlivan expands upon the medium to create drawings that employ wire, steel, salt, yarn, shadow, and LED light, constantly evolving and dissecting the elements of a drawing to investigate the confines of the line itself. Twisted wire structures are the basis for her shadow drawings, which Quinlivan later develops further into sculptures; 2D drawings turn into 3D drawings, that are then turned back into 2D drawings. With a deep commitment to the exploration of and innate response to her materials, Quinlivan composes lyrical artworks that stitch together a response to the passing of time. Each element of the work is endlessly translated into an infinite looping web; traveling through our consciousness and drawing attention to the subjectivity of the phenomena of recollection and forgetting.

impulses, restraints, tones exhibits brand new “Spatial Drawings,” as well as two delicate, yet powerful, site-specific and interactive installations that respond to the gallery space and flux of bodies within it. The well-known “Spatial Drawings” walk the line between sculptural weaving and graphic mark making and explores concepts of temporal reality and memory. Quinlivan’s “Spatial Drawings” performance develops from wire armatures suspended from the ceiling. The shadows of these wire armatures are the basis for Quinlivan’s live and in-person crystalline salt drawings that will be developed over the course of three weeks during exhibition.

This work, shown for the first time in New York City, forms part of a series of site-specific ephemeral drawings Quinlivan has been making in Cambridge, Berlin, Hong Kong, Australia, and Colorado from since 2016.

Curator Marguerite Brown, explains “Linear threads and their manipulation have for millennia been symbolically connected to notions of time. The Moirai of ancient Greek mythology, also known at the Fates, were three goddesses who through the act of spinning thread with distaff and spindle, controlled the life of every person from birth to death, when their thread was abruptly cut. Similar female deities exist in Roman, Norse and Slavic mythologies, where thread is consistently wielded as a manifestation of destiny. As such, a simple strand and the way it is stretched, allotted and truncated, became an ancient way of comprehending the movement of a human life through time.”

1936 BUGATTI × BEST OF THE BEST AWARD

1936 BUGATTI TYPE 57SC COUPÉ ATLANTIC

WINS THIRD ANNUAL THE PENINSULA CLASSICS BEST OF THE BEST AWARD

A rare and beautiful 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic was named the winner of the prestigious The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award  today at The Peninsula Paris hotel.

Now in its third year, The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award brought together eight of the world’s finest classic cars—the best of show winners from the top international concours—to compete for the title of the most exceptional motor car in the world. The Bugatti is co-owned by the Mullin Automotive Museum, and Rob and Melani Walton, located in California, USA, and was named “Best of Show Concours d’Etat” at the 2017 Chantilly Arts & Elegance.

Speaking of the award’s legacy, The Hon. Sir Michael Kadoorie, Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited and co-founder of the award said, “My great hope is that we not only succeed in thrilling long-term car enthusiasts, but that this award will also ignite a new-found passion for those just discovering the world of motoring.”

Powered by a supercharged engine and considered by many to be the first supercar ever made, the winning Bugatti is one of four Type 57 Atlantic models ever produced, with only three in the world remaining. The vehicle was designed at the height of the art deco movement by Jean Bugatti, Ettore Bugatti’s son. Jean based the car on his other design, the 1935 Aérolithe concept car, which was famously riveted externally, for fear of the magnesium-alloy body parts catching fire. Jean kept this signature riveted seam on the all-aluminium body of the Atlantic.

“The Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic is the crown jewel of the automotive circuit,” said Bugatti Head of Tradition Julius Kruta. “This car was Jean Bugatti’s masterpiece with its beautiful and breath-taking lines, plus its unmatched performance for the time. Today, it remains the ultimate expression of the Bugatti legacy: unparalleled power and beautiful design.”

This model, chassis number 57374, was the first Type 57 Atlantic produced and is the only surviving “Aéro Coupé,” a designation given to the first two cars that were mechanically very similar to the Aérolithe. The car was delivered new in 1936 to Britain’s Nathaniel Mayer Victor Rothschild, third Baron Rothschild, and has since passed through few owners in its 82-year history. The car has been displayed internationally, and most recently, was on display at the Los Angeles-based Petersen Automotive Museum for the “Art of Bugatti” exhibit.

“The Atlantic represents the pinnacle of everything I adore about French automotive styling and is widely described as the Mona Lisa of the automobile collector world,” said Peter Mullin, Founder and CEO of the Mullin Automotive Museum. “From its signature curves to its aviation-inspired rivets, to the Jean Bugatti designed sleek all-aluminium body, the car is truly a remarkable piece of art. I’m very honoured to have shared it with the world amongst other worthy ‘Best of the Best’ contenders.”

“I second Peter’s thoughts – the other seven nominees were simply stunning, which makes winning the award feel even more special,” said Rob Walton, co-owner of the winning car. “What this award does is allow us to take a step back and admire the quality and beauty of the greatest classic cars in existence today. For an automotive fan like myself, it’s a joy.”

The founders of The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award are each known as some of the world’s foremost motoring experts, and were brought together by their shared passion for fine motor vehicles, impeccable restorations, as well as the preservation of tradition and heritage.

The Hon. Sir Michael Kadoorie, together with award co-founders Christian Philippsen, William E. “Chip” Connor and Bruce Meyer, created the award that debuted in 2016. The gentleman each cite a passion for automotive excellence as the inspiration behind the creation of The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award.

According to Bruce Meyer, “For the third year, the ultimate standard for judging The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award was that of uncompromised quality and design. Of course, this made the selection process most challenging for the esteemed group of panellists.” He continued: “In the end, the 1936 Bugatti Type 57 SC Coupé Atlantic emerged victorious, with its exceptional, bespoke design making it a marvellous combination of art and technology.”

Previously presented during Monterey Car Week, the award moved to Paris this year to be presented during the world-famous Rétromobile event. The Bugatti was presented at an exclusive reveal party in The Peninsula Paris’ subterranean garage, following a private dinner.

The winning vehicle was selected after being reviewed by 24 automotive experts, designers and notable celebrities within the motoring world. Learn more about each judge, in addition to the seven other nominees by clicking here.
