Hermosa Beach to Host Teen Choice Awards Show

TEEN CHOICE 2019 will be broadcast for the first time from Hermosa Beach on Sunday, August 11, featuring performances by stars from TV, music, film and social media. This will be the first time the popular awards show, which gives teens the power to select the winners, will be broadcast live from a beach.

We are so thrilled to host TEEN CHOICE 2019 in Hermosa Beach, said Hermosa Beach Mayor Stacey Armato. This awards show will be a great opportunity to showcase Hermosa Beach to audiences around the country and, even more importantly, provide our teens with an exciting and free musical event on their own hometown sand. The City of Hermosa Beach is working with the producers to ensure the security of the event and will be encouraging parents and teens to visit our restaurants and businesses while in Hermosa for TEEN CHOICE 2019 so that our businesses will benefit from the event.

TEEN CHOICE 2019 will air live from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on August 11 on the East Coast and via tape delay from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the West Coast on FOX. The awards show will feature a surf-and-sand dance number that will set the stage for performances, surprise viral moments and more. For over two decades, the show has presented performances and appearances by some of pop culture’s brightest stars. TEEN CHOICE 2018 featured a special medley of hit songs by Khalid, as well as performances by Meghan Trainor, Lauv, Bebe Rexha and Foster the People.

In addition to the awards show, Hermosa Beach will once again host concerts on the beach in August, as it has for about 20 years. This will be the first year for 5B Artists + Media, a global music management and events company, to produce the Hermosa Beach Summer Series. The company is planning an enhanced program that will include comedy, movies by the beach, beach cleanups and more on the three other weekends in August: August 3-4, August 17-18 and August 24-25.

With TEEN CHOICE 2019 coming to Hermosa for the first time and 5B Artists + Media launching its enhanced concert series with more entertainment and community activities, the summer of 2019 is sure to be exciting and entertaining for all our residents in Hermosa Beach, said Mayor Armato.

City of Hermosa Beach Requests Proposals for Beach Summer Concerts

The City of Hermosa Beach today announced it has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) from concert/special event producers or other qualified professionals to produce the popular Hermosa Beach Summer Concerts, an annual series of musical performances that attract up to 10,000 to the sand south of the Hermosa Pier in August.

The RFP seeks producers who have experience in organizing, producing and executing a series of live-music events held outdoors for the enjoyment of a broad audience. Proposals are due Feb. 25, and the City expects to make a decision in March. The RFP states that the City’s desire is for the concerts to “remain free to the public, feature a quality mix of high-caliber local, regional and/or domestic artists that will enrich the local community and continue to build upon the suc- cess of these annual events which have become beloved by the entire South Bay community.”

“For the community, Hermosa Beach Summer Concerts offer a great opportunity to bring family, friends and visitors here to enjoy our beautiful beach and great musical performances,” said Her- mosa Beach Mayor Stacey Armato. “Issuing an RFP represents a new chapter for Hermosa Beach Summer Concerts. Through this process, we are launching a competition for the best proposal for continuing the tradition of live music at the beach in August.”

Hermosa Beach City Manager Suja Lowenthal said she’s already received multiple inquiries from concert producers, talent curators and others who are interested in submitting a proposal.

“Ever since we announced we would issue an RFP for Hermosa Beach Summer Concerts, we have been hearing from people interested in participating in the process,” Lowenthal said. “Hermosa Beach Summer Concerts are well-known within the music industry, and we look forward to find- ing a great partner to work with the City to produce events that appeal to a wide spectrum of people.”

Hermosa Beach “La La Land” Day

Hermosa Beach will celebrate its starring role in the Academy Award®-‐winning film “La La Land” and the City’s historical connection to jazz by celebrating “La La Land” Day at the Beach on Oct. 27. Magical moments in the popular musical featured a sunset stroll on the Hermosa Beach Pier and jazz performances at the City’s Lighthouse Café.

Hosted by the City of Hermosa Beach and Kinecta Federal Credit Union, “La La Land” Day at the Beach will feature performances by the Lou Giovanetti Jazz Orchestra and professional dancers from 5-7 p.m. Friends of the Parks will then provide a free screening of the award-winning movie on a beachfront screen.

The 12 vintage-style street lamps that lit the Hermosa Beach Pier in the movie will be returned to the pier to re-create the lighting for scene in the movie when actor Ryan Gosling’s walked on the pier and performed a few verses of the Academy Award®-winning tune, “City of Stars.”

In advance of “La La Land” Day at the Beach, the street lamps will be illuminated Oct. 24-26 at 6 p.m., and the Lighthouse Café will provide jazz performances on the pier from 6-7 p.m. Oct. 24-26. The Lighthouse Café is considered the epicenter of the West Coast jazz movement, hosting performances by many of the legendary jazz greats, including Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Chet Baker.

All events will be free, open to the public and accessible (ADA compliant).

5-7 p.m. Saturday, October 27, for the musical and dance performances; 7:30 p.m. for the movie.
