Face Transplant Surgery: A New Case Study

A new case study out of New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Developmentfinds that face transplant surgery in patients who have experienced severe facial trauma can improve speech production.

Face transplantation is one of the most extensive facial reconstructive procedures available. The procedure involves the partial or total replacement of nerves, muscles and skeletal structures of the face, head, and neck using donor tissues. With only 41 facial transplant procedures performed worldwide to date, this case study adds to the very limited literature documenting speech production outcomes post-facial transplant. The surgery – which was the first in New York State – was performed by experts at NYU Langone Health’s Face Transplant Program, led by Eduardo Rodriguez, MD, DDS, the Helen L. Kimmel Professor of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and chair of the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery.

“Our findings provide a window into the complex recovery process following major facial reconstruction and serve as an important foundation from which we can begin to understand how facial transplant can improve speech production preoperatively to postoperatively,” said Maria I. Grigos, the study’s lead author and associate professor of communicative sciences and disorders at NYU Steinhardt. “Among the many remarkable patterns observed, we found that the patient displayed more flexible control of facial movement as he adapted to the transplanted structures.”

Research Method

Using optical tracking, a form of motion tracking technology, Grigos and her team were able to examine first-hand how the facial transplant procedure alters movement of the face and contributes to improved speech production. Researchers compared data from the case study patient – a male victim who suffered third- and fourth-degree burns and major soft tissue loss in a fire – against four adult males who had not experienced severe facial trauma.

The patient’s speech production and facial movements were examined once before the procedure and four times in the 13 months following the procedure. Movements of the patient’s lips and jaw, as well as the intelligibility of his speech, were compared pre- to post-tranplant and then tracked across the recovery period.

“The remarkable changes that we captured in this patient reflect the multiple processes involved in the reintegration of neuromuscular control and in the learning of new strategies over the recovery period. Such adaptability is a positive indicator that treatment to improve speech production can be effective post–facial transplant surgery,” continued Grigos.

In addition to Grigos, the study’s co-authors include Eduardo D. Rodriguez, Étoile LeBlanc, J. Rodrigo Diaz-Siso and Natalie Plana of the Hansjörg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at NYU Langone Health, as well as Christina Hagedorn of the College of Staten Island, City University of New York.

NYU and its affiliated medical center, NYU Langone Health, continue to be pioneers in face transplant surgery and research.

HE WILL BE FEATURED IN DEF JAM’S UNDISPUTED COMPILATION, OUT MARCH 8TH!

“NO DISTURBANCE” TRACK LIST:
1. I CAN’T
2. THE DON
3. HARDER THAN EVER (FEAT. JAY GWUAPO & KJ BALLA)
4. CHEATED

“TJ Porter is leading Harlem into the future.”

“He cuts through beats with ease & takes an approach that most artist don’t.”

“His rhymes, deft and sharp with Harlem’s natural proclivity for quick wit and bucket drummer cadences, are leavened by a singsong delivery that sounds modern, but anchored in a traditionalist’s slickness.”

ABOUT TJ PORTER:

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take…but TJ Porter is shooting to win. The Harlem native is taking his prowess from the basketball court—hunger, drive and hard work—into hip-hop. “This is a mental game,” he says. “I want to be the best.”

Raised in the Robert F. Wagner Housing Projects, the 18-year-old (born Terrence Reaves) grew up on Nas, The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur. “My uncle would say, ‘I want y’all to listen to this and by the end of the day, tell me what the songs mean.’” Mature for his age, he began rapping at eight and made his first song at 12. “As a kid, I was always chilling with the older guys in the hood. I would always be rapping.” His natural athleticism led him to want to pursue basketball professionally. For several years, music took a back seat to his hoop dreams.

In 2016, TJ’s career—and life—hit a turning point when his best friend, Chico, was fatally shot in a gang-related incident. He questioned his life in the streets and admits, that he was filled with anger. “I ain’t gonna lie. It changed my life.” Through tragedy sprung hope. He took on “We gon’ ball,” the mantra of his slain friend, and the moniker “TJ Porter,” a nod to the debonair Rich Porter from Paid in Full, and set his eyes on rap as the prize.

With the forthcoming Voice of The Trenches, TJ Porter is ready to tell his story. Autobiographical, he hopes to showcase the many facets of New York City—good and bad. He’s slated to hit the road later this year and release a trilogy of projects leading into NBA All -Star Weekend 2019. More than anything, TJ hopes that his success can serve as a motivation, especially to other young people. “I’mma give you the trenches,” he says. “But these are the opportunities you can get.”

available via 300 Entertainment

Multi-platinum, electronic dance music trio CHEAT CODES  (comprised of Trevor Dahl, Matthew Russell and Kevi Ford) have teamed up with Afrojack for the huge new track, “Ferrari”, taken from their forthcoming EP, “Level 2”. The bass-heavy track blends dance and hip hop sensibilities that break into an anthemic chorus, drenched with Cheat Codes signature electronic textures that have seen them become one of the fastest growing pop and dance acts, garnering over 2 billion streams.

The monumental track is over a year in the making- Matt of Cheat Codes explains: “We met up with Afrojack in the studio over a year ago, we wanted to figure out how we could blend our two sounds into something cohesive. We first heard the drop and knew it was something we could come together on. A lot of the process was back and forth through email sending demos. Gonna have to hit the stage together at some point because the clubs are gonna love this one.”

The dance-floor ready anthem is juxtaposed by it’s dark lyrical narrative that ultimately tells the tale of a missteps in a relationship. Matt adds, “Ferrari is that moment when you really mess up in a relationship and have to overcompensate to try and make it better”

“Ferrari” follows, “Feeling of Falling,” their new single and collaboration with pop sensation KIM PETRAS. The euphoric anthem pairs Cheat Codes’ signature sugary electronic hooks with Kim’s mesmerizing vocals. The group released a remix bundle of the track, featuring re-works from the likes of Daniel Blume, Danny Quest, Justin Caruso, and Angemi, as well as Steve Aoki – which is available now.  Cheat Codes, who are touring with Steve Aoki throughout the UK this February, recently remixed Aoki’s collaboration with BTS,  “Waste It On Me”.

“Ferrari” comes in the wake of another exciting year for Cheat Codes. The group are on the heels of their track, “Only You” which featured Little Mix and its inventive music video featuring TV star, Peyton List. “Only You” hit #1 at UK radio and received critical acclaim from the likes of Billboard, TIME and Rolling Stone.  Earlier this year, the group was joined by Fetty Wap and CVBZ to take the stage at Jimmy Kimmel Live! to perform their single, “Feels Great.”

Vagabond Tours Accepts Two Top Awards

Vagabond Small Group Tours of Ireland is no stranger to accepting awards. In early February the company received not one but two 2019 Irish Tourism Industry Awards presented Feb. 2 at the Clayton Hotel in Dublin.

These awards recognize those people and companies that create enhanced experiences to draw people to Ireland. Awards are granted across 15 categories for general initiatives such as accommodation and marketing, and regional specific awards for the Atlantic Way, Hidden Heartlands and Ancient East. Fifteen winners were chosen from among 75 shortlisted nominees. For more on the awards see https://www.irishtourismindustryawards.ie/

Vagabond Small Group Tours of Ireland’s 6 Day Ancient Ireland Tour won in the category Best Ireland’s Ancient East Tourism Experience, under 25,000 visitors. “We introduced this tour in 2018 to help answer the question, “Who are the Irish?” explained Rob Rankin, co-owner with his wife, Amy Rankin. In their imaginations guests burrow into bogs, scale crenellated towers and shimmy up mountains for glimpses of Ireland beginning with Iron Age Celts sifted into Stone Age sands. See: https://vagabondtoursofireland.com/tour/6-day-eastern-ireland-tour/.

Best Environmental Tourism Innovative went to Vagabond Tours of Ireland for environmental initiatives that in some instances have led to significant cost savings for the company while other initiatives are viewed as company investments that “we hope will have a long-term benefit to the environment,” said Rankin. These include:

  • Offsetting the company’s total annual carbon emissions and restoring Ireland’s lost woodlands with a program of replanting indigenous Irish hardwood trees.
  • Offering free compostable cups to guests to use in local coffee shops instead of non-recyclable cups.
  • Giving each guest an aluminum water bottle to use instead of single use plastic bottles, helping to eliminate an estimated 30,000 fewer plastic bottles per year in Ireland.

Vagabond’s staff curate locally owned accommodations, pubs and restaurants that help serve their goal of authenticity. In the end the mission is to have guests “love Ireland as much as we do.” Transport is in custom mini buses, Mercedes ‘Vagatrons’ or 4×4 Sprinters Newtrons that allows access beyond where regular tour buses go.

Alfa Romeo Award Winning Car

Arguably one of the most desirable cars of all time, the remarkable 1937 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Berlinetta today was revealed at The Peninsula Paris hotel as the winner of the fourth annual The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award.

While eight stunning ‘Best of Show’ winners from top concours around the world competed for the accolade, the Alfa Romeo was the stand-out choice among the judges as the best car in the world. Hailing from Los Angeles, California, the car was entered into the running for the award after being named ‘Best of Show’ at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

“The winning Alfa Romeo is a perfect example of the type of car that inspired us to create this award,” said William E. (Chip) Connor, Chairman and CEO of William E. Connor & Associates Ltd, and co-founder of The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award. “To provide an opportunity for car lovers to pause a moment and celebrate flawless design and engineering of this calibre is truly an honour each year.”

The Alfa Romeo is owned by David and Ginny Sydorick of Los Angeles, California. Reflecting on the car’s recent recognition, David said: “As an avid auto-collector, having two cars in the running for this year’s award was truly remarkable. It goes without saying that Ginny and I are ecstatic at the result – a proud moment for us both.”

The winning car was unveiled using a ‘shutter-effect’, whereby individual slats turned in sync to reveal the Alfa Romeo standing proudly within a bespoke-designed, up-lit box.  Following the big reveal, guests at the party, including ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ‘The Alienist,’ and Girl on a Train’ star Luke Evans, were further treated to a music set from notable DJ and On-Camera Personality, Hannah Bronfman, who was joined by husband, DJ and Entrepreneur, Brendan Fallis.

An automotive jewel engineered by Ingegner Vittorio Jano, the 8C 2900 was designed to compete in sports car races, specifically the Mille Miglia, which it won outright in 1935, 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1947. In racing trim, they dominated all the major competitions, and in road trim, they were the fastest grand touring cars.

Established in 1925 in Milan, Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring had first licensed Charles Weymann’s system of fabric-covered lightweight frames and then developed its own ‘Superleggera’ construction. Patented in 1936, the Superleggera system consists of a structural framework of small-diameter steel tubes that conform to an automobile body’s shape and are covered by thin alloy body panels that strengthen the framework. The winning vehicle, 412020, is the first of only five known Berlinettas built on the Lungo chassis and is the car that Touring refers to as the beginning of Superleggera.

(Chip) Connor, Bruce Meyer and Christian Philippsen. Each founder shares a common passion and appreciation of fine motor cars, the preservation of their heritage and immaculate restoration projects. The award, sponsored by The Peninsula Hotels, brings together eight of the concours circuits’ elite ‘Best of Show’ winners from around the globe.
