Maverick electric vehicle brand, Nobe believes it will transform both the impact and the mood of inner-city traffic with a ‘neo-retro’ car design officially revealed to the world today. The Nobe 100 is a three-wheeled vehicle that features design quirks inspired by classic cars, but delivers a futuristic vision for inner-city travel. Alongside its official launch, Nobe has opened a crowd-funding campaign to raise investment dollars and supercharge initial production.

At first glance, the bold, eye-catching design of the Nobe 100 belies the care and attention paid to delivering the brand’s environmental mission; it produces zero air pollution, houses upgradable technology to enhance vehicle longevity, decentralises the production process and takes up far less road space despite accommodating three people.

“The Nobe 100 is a feat of engineering and design thinking.” Continued Muljar. “We haven’t designed a new car, we’ve designed a new way to build and experience a car. We’ve reinvented the car from the wheels up.”

The power of three

As a three-wheeled vehicle, the Nobe 100 is technically classified as a trike, so has the same accessibility as a motorbike. It also has a far superior turning circle, fits smaller parking spaces than a standard small car and through offering all-wheel drive the Nobe 100 delivers great handling and stability, while offering superior grip and performance compared with two-wheel drive cars or bikes in wet and snowy conditions.

The concept and design of the Nobe 100 heralds from Estonia – a burgeoning innovation hub – employing leading electric vehicle engineers through a partnership with Tallinn Technical University. The decision to crowd-fund the project was taken to give the business a contemporary, agile business model with a community of advocates from the start.

Formula E partners with voestalpine for European Races

This takes voestalpine into a completely new sponsoring category, one with its own rankings and a trophy in the fifth and sixth (2019/20) seasons of Formula E.

Formula E has announced a new partnership with voestalpine – global leading technology and capital goods group – for select events next season in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, titled the voestalpine European races.

Starting from season five, voestalpine will put its name to the European leg of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship – where the fully-electric next generation of Formula E cars compete in iconic city-centre locations. The partnership takes voestalpine into a new sponsorship category which includes rankings and a trophy for select European races in the fifth and sixth seasons oof Formula E.

As a platform to test and develop road-relevant technologies and speed-up the mass adoption of electric vehicles on a global scale, Formula E will work closely with voestalpine to make further advancements in the field of e-mobility and assist with technology transfer between automotive suppliers, manufacturers, and customers.

SG LEWIS RELEASES ‘DUSK’

Songwriter and producer SG Lewis shares ‘Dusk’. The 6-track release is the first chapter of his three-part dedication to club music: ‘Dusk, Dark, Dawn’ and is available to buy and stream now via all partners.

Presented over three phases, ‘Dusk, Dark, Dawn’ maps the trajectory of one night out over the course of an album, matching genres and tempos different stages of that night, beginning at sun-down, both inside and outside the club. On ‘Dusk’, SG Lewis plays with disco, west coast hip-hop and 80’s electro references to start the story. “Disco has always had the association of the start of a night for me. I spent a lot a time as a resident DJ in clubs and disco was always that magnetic genre, always brought people onto the dancefloor.” Lead single ‘Aura’ blends SG’s signature warm, uptempo house with disco inflections. “There’s an undeniable beauty to this part of the night. The apprehension, excitement… ‘Dusk’ is the warm-up for the heavier, darker things to come.”

The 6-track release includes features with J Warner and Kartell (Roche Musique) and will be released in full on April 6th via Casablanca/Republic Records. The project will soon segue into ‘Dark’ – a phase dedicated to harder, post-midnight club music styles like techno and hip-hop – and finally ‘Dawn’, dedicated to euphoria and chillout. Throughout the week SG Lewis has been touring across the UK with his final sold out show happening tomorrow at London’s Electric Brixton where he’ll be bringing out some very special guests.

With several production cars around the world already coming from the factory with partial automation features, manufacturers, ride sharing companies, and rental car companies are in an all-out race to lead innovation in autonomous vehicle technology. That intense competition will also lead many to take risks.

 

Auto Insurers Betting on Autonomous to Decrease Frequency of Accidents: Auto insurers have already begun factoring the growth of autonomous and semi-autonomous technologies, such as forward collision warning with autobrake, adaptive headlights, and blind spot assist into future claims projections. In general, the industry is betting on autonomous technology to ultimately decrease the frequency of accidents, but not the severity of accidents that do occur.

 

You Are Being Recorded: One of the most interesting implications of the autonomous vehicle movement on the P&C insurance industry is the vast amount of data that is being collected by these technologies. According to a new studyconducted by J.D. Power in collaboration with Miller Canfield and Mcity, nearly three fourths (74%) of consumers say they are willing to share autonomous vehicle data after a collision, potentially giving insurers broad access into the details surrounding a crash and the ability to expand the current telematics offerings they currently have in place, which offer discounts to safer drivers. According to J.D. Power data, these telematics-powered offerings have been associated with high levels of insurance customer satisfaction.

Following its public debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, today Jaguar announced U.S. pricing for the 2019 Jaguar I-PACE.

Priced from $69,500 before federal and local government incentives1, the Jaguar I-PACE establishes a new mid-size premium battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment.

“With the debut of the Jaguar I-PACE, Jaguar in the U.S. is officially in the luxury electric vehicle business and our retailers and customers are placing orders,” said Joe Eberhardt, President and CEO of Jaguar Land Rover North America.  “In partnership with our retailers who are investing in new facilities and EV infrastructure, we have a proactive market strategy led by very competitive pricing and the Jaguar EliteCare electric vehicle ownership package. We think the entire journey of buying, owning and driving an I-PACE will be one our customers will love for life.”

Featuring a 90kWh battery, the I-PACE delivers an estimated range of up to 240 miles and 0-60mph acceleration in as little as 4.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 124mph2,4.

I-PACE owners will have the convenience of using both AC and DC power to charge their vehicle; with 0-80 percent charge achievable in approximately 40 minutes using a 100kW public fast charger, or just over 10 hours using a 230V/32amp charger3.

CHARGING AT HOME

In-home charging is facilitated by the vehicle’s 7kW on-board charger and a Mode 2 universal cable which will ship with the vehicle as standard. Using the mode 2 charger, I-PACE customers will be able to charge via a domestic 110V or 230V wall socket.

Customers may also chose to have a Level 2, 230V/32amp charger installed inside or outside of their home. To help Jaguar customers have home chargers installed, Jaguar Land Rover will be developing a nationwide network of certified independent electricians, which will be the subject of a future announcement.

RETAILER NETWORK AND INVESTMENTS

In conjunction with the expansion of the Jaguar and Land Rover model lineups, including its first electrified vehicles, Jaguar and Land Rover retailers have committed to invest $1.5B on new facilities and enhanced owner experiences over the next 5 years in North America. The new retail facility design standard to be adopted by retailers nationwide creates modern dual branded retail environments. There are 207 total dealerships in the United States, including 166 Jaguar franchises.

In the lead up to the start of sales for I-PACE later this year, retailers have also heavily invested in the training of their sales and service personnel to better understand the EV market; concerns owners may have throughout the purchase process; the intricacies on how to repair these vehicles and how to do so safely.

Jaguar & Land Rover retailers have already begun installation of electric vehicle charging equipment, getting ready to sell and service Jaguar and Land Rover electrified vehicles when they go on sale beginning in the second half of 2018.

PIRELLI EQUIPS NEW KEY PRESTIGE AND PREMIUM MODELS AT GENEVA

Pirelli’s digital revolution has taken a new step forward in enabling a tire to gather and transmit data. At the 88th Geneva International Motor Show, Pirelli presents its Cyber Car technology for Original Equipment in cooperation with major car makers. Cyber Car enables the tire to directly interact with the car’s on-board electronics system, and in particular the driver assistance systems, delivering important information about the car’s operation to ensure a safer drive with enhanced performance. The new Pirelli system will be in market by year end on the most innovative electric and traditional cars.

Placing sensors in the tires is an integral part of Pirelli’s Perfect fit strategy, which focuses on developing made to measure products and services that meet both driver needs and car manufacturer specializations.

CYBER CAR: WHEN TIRES AND CARS TALK TO EACH OTHER. Pirelli’s big news for the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, Cyber Car is the new smart tire system for the Original Equipment market, designed in close collaboration with car manufacturers. Cyber Car supplies important data that improves safety and performance. With the exception of tire pressures monitored by TPMS systems, up until now there has been no information collected individually by tires that is transmitted to the car. Therefore Cyber Car takes car digitalization into a new era. The tire embedded sensor is an innovative form of automotive intelligence integrated into existing driver aids that improves performance, efficiency and environmental impact through capturing and transmitting key tire data to the vehicle, such as pressure, internal temperature and tread depth. It can activate systems such as ABS and stability control. For example, by reading a tire’s ID, the vehicle can alter its set-up for a safer, more comfortable drive. By knowing the car’s accurate weight, the vehicle’s central control unit can calculate precisely how many miles can be driven before recharging.

Cyber Car informs the driver about the tire’s vertical load (vital information for electric cars), temperature and pressure through the carmaker’s interface, allowing timely intervention if the pressures are wrong. Tire maintenance becomes easier, thanks to specific feedback on tread wear and how tires should be seasonally rotated. The Cyber Car also offers bespoke services, such as servicing, car valet and roadside assistance.

The first Cyber Car fitted models will arrive this year, with several manufacturers already at an advanced stage of integrating Pirelli’s technology into their own systems. The next evolution will be the Cyber Tire system: the tire of the future, based on a technical platform capable of collecting even more data, transmitting information to the car’s on-board systems with every wheel rotation. While this technology isn’t on sale yet, it is already in action on the Ferrari FXXK: the 1000-horsepower development hypercar for track use only.

THE EVOLUTION OF PIRELLI CYBER TECHNOLOGIES. Cyber Car is the latest application from Pirelli’s Cyber Technologies platform launched in 2002, with the aim of providing maximum integration between tires, cars and drivers. Cyber Car follows the Cyber Fleet system designed for fleets and Pirelli Connesso system for everyday drivers.

The tire is the sole point of contact for the car with the road surface, therefore it can collect extensive information that’s crucial to a safer, more efficient drive; both in terms of environmental sustainability and cost savings for the driver. Pirelli’s Cyber systems are all based on a sensor placed inside the tire, which is then connected to the Pirelli Cloud. This sensor, weighing just a few grams, monitors the operating status of every tire and transmits the data to an electronic control unit. The information collected is delivered to the Pirelli Connesso app, or in the case of Cyber Car, to the car’s on-board systems and an app. Pirelli Cyber Technologies use specific systems to talk directly to the driver (Pirelli Connesso), to fleet managers (Cyber Fleet), or to car manufacturers and drivers simultaneously (Cyber Car). These systems function equally for both electric and traditional cars.

PIRELLI HOMOLOGATIONS ON SHOW. Many new stars at the Geneva Motor Show will be fitted with Pirelli tires, such as the Ferrari 488 Pista and Lamborghini Urus, as well as Italdesign’s second creation: the exclusive Zerouno Roadster. Latest-generation models such as the Audi A6 and Audi A7 Sportback, the new Bentley Bentayga V8 and hybrid, BMW X4, electric Jaguar I-Pace and McLaren Senna will also showcase Pirelli tires in Geneva. Pirelli tires also feature in the Aston Martin, Porsche and Mercedes stands.

PIRELLI CONNESSO. Pirelli presented the Pirelli Connesso system in Geneva a year ago. This technology can send information to the driver about the tire’s performance via an app. While Cyber Car is intended as original equipment, designed to work with integrated on-board systems, Pirelli Connesso is aimed at the aftermarket. The Connesso app provides services such as contacting the nearest authorized Pirelli dealer and booking a tire change.

COLOR EDITION. Pirelli’s colored P Zero tires will star in Geneva once more, having already been launched on the market in sizes of 19 inches and higher. These allow customers to personalize their tires aesthetically. The Color Edition is available in the red, yellow, green, blue, orange, silver and white base colors; plus other personalized color options. Pirelli’s exclusive technology and materials allows this, creating a protective barrier to keep colors bright and pristine throughout the tire’s life, without affecting performance.

PZERO WORLD AT GENEVA. The Pirelli area at the Geneva motor show has been designed to recreate the atmosphere of PZero World, which is Pirelli’s flagship store concept currently operating in Los Angeles and Monaco. The PZero World stores combines a refined atmosphere, cutting edge services, Pirelli Design fashion accessories, Pirelli calendar images, Pirelli Moto products and PZero Velo, Pirelli’s new line dedicated to sporting bicycles. PZero Velo also includes a Color Edition tire being launched at the Geneva show.

I-PACE SUV REVEALED

Today, the Jaguar I-PACE, the first all-electric production vehicle from the Jaguar brand, has been unveiled to the world in a live webcast. Clean, smart and offering a wealth of driver assistance features, the Jaguar I-PACE delivers sports car performance, artificial intelligence (AI) enabled technologies and five-seat SUV practicality.

British comedian and actor, Jack Whitehall, self-proclaimed EV enthusiast and TV presenter Jonny Smith and American tech guru iJustine, hosted a special live show as the first I-PACE rolled off the production line in at the Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing facility in Graz, Austria, where the car will be built.

When it came to explaining the technology behind I-PACE, host comedian Jack Whitehall enlisted the help of the Jaguar brand’s newest vehicle experts, nine year olds Lola and Hudson.

A documentary, titled ‘Fully Charged’ aired at the end of the webcast, giving a behind-the-scenes insight into the creators of the Jaguar I-PACE.

Designed and engineered in the UK, the I-PACE will be built in Graz, Austria, as part of Jaguar Land Rover’s manufacturing partnership with Magna Steyr. It joins the growing family of Jaguar SUVs, alongside the all-new E-PACE and multiple award-winning F-PACE.

“We set out with a clean sheet approach to harness new battery electric technology with an architecture engineered from the outset to optimize EV performance, aerodynamics and interior space. The result is the I-PACE – a true Jaguar and a truly driver-focused EV,” said Ian Hoban, Jaguar Vehicle Line Director.

ELECTRIC

With a 432 pouch cell, 90kWh, lithium-ion battery pack, the I-PACE delivers an estimated range of 240 miles2. Owners will be able to achieve a 0-80 percent battery charge in around 40 minutes using publicly available 100kW DC rapid charging facilities3. Home charging with a 230V/32A AC wall box (7kW) will achieve the same state of charge (0-80 percent) in just over ten hours – ideal for overnight charging3.

A suite of smart range-optimizing technologies includes a battery pre-conditioning system which allows the vehicle to warm or cool its battery, and cabin, to an optimal temperature while plugged in to power. By allowing the vehicle to do this while still connected to power, the system reduces the need for the vehicle to tap into its driving range to reach optimal operating temperature.

PERFORMANCE

Two Jaguar-designed concentric electric motors – which feature driveshafts passing through the motors themselves for compactness – are placed at each axle, producing exceptional performance and all-wheel drive, multi-surface traction.

The high torque density and high-energy efficiency characteristics of the motors combine to deliver sports car performance, launching the I-PACE from a standing start to 60mph in 4.5 seconds1. This instantaneous performance is matched with exceptional ride comfort and engaging driving dynamics Jaguar customers have come to expect.

The aluminum architecture uses advanced riveting and bonding technology to deliver a light, stiff body structure. Together with the structural battery pack, it has a torsional rigidity of 36kNm/degree – the highest of any current Jaguar vehicle.

The battery is placed centrally between the two axles, and as low as possible with a seal between the housing and the underfloor. This location enables a 50:50 weight distribution and a low center of gravity. Together with the advanced double wishbone front and an Integral Link rear suspension with standard Active Air Suspension and optional configurable Adaptive Dynamics, this packaging delivers agile handling and outstanding ride comfort.

 

DESIGN

The Jaguar I-PACE is designed and engineered to take full advantage of its smart electric powertrain, maximizing the potential of packaging benefits EVs inherently bring.

Its sleek, coupe-like silhouette was influenced by the Jaguar C-X75 supercar concept; drawing inspiration for its short, low hood, aero-enhanced roof design and curved rear window from the concept. This cab-forward design contrasts with its squared-off rear, helping reduce the coefficient of drag to just 0.29Cd. To optimize the balance between cooling and aerodynamics, the I-PACE relies on Active Vanes in the grille which open when cooling is required and close when not needed; redirecting air through the integral hood scoop, further smoothing airflow around the vehicle.

Inside, customers will experience a spacious cabin highlighted by the Jaguar brand’s exquisite attention to detail and sophisticated materials – including the option of a premium textile Kvadrat interior.

Although classed as a mid-sized SUV by its physical footprint, the cab forward design and packaging of the EV powertrain mean the I-PACE offers interior space comparable to a larger vehicle. The I-PACE affords a rear legroom space of 35.0-in (890mm) and a useful 0.43- cu. ft. (12.3-liter) central storage compartment in a space that would ordinarily by occupied by a transmission tunnel in a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle. Also in the rear, tablet and laptop storage can be found beneath the seats; while the rear luggage compartment behind those seats offers a 25.3 cu. ft. capacity, a generous 51.0 cu. ft. is available with the second row seats folded flat.

CONNECTED-CAR TECHNOLOGY

The Jaguar I-PACE introduces the Jaguar InControl® Touch Pro Duo™ infotainment system to Jaguar. First debuting on the Range Rover Velar and later on the 2018 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, Touch Pro Duo relies on a pair of innovative touchscreens which work in conjunction with capacitive sensors and tactile physical controls, to make the new system intuitive to use6.

A new EV navigation system built into Touch Pro Duo calculates personalized range and charging status to assist with driver confidence. To gather this data, the Touch Pro Duo system analyzes the topography of the selected route to the destination and aggregates that information with insights from previous journeys, including individual driving styles.

The advanced system uses ‘Smart Settings’ technology – driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms – to identify individual driver preferences, and then tailors the vehicle’s driving and interior settings accordingly.

The I-PACE will also launch an Amazon Alexa Skill linked to the Jaguar InControl Remote App. Owners will be able to ask an Alexa-enabled device for information such as “Is my car locked?,” “What is the charging level?,” and “Do I have enough range to get to work?” among other things.

To ensure customers always have access to the latest infotainment, telematics and battery energy control software, the I-PACE will also be the first Jaguar to provide Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) updates.

 

In the U.S. the I-PACE will be available in the second half of 2018.

All-Electric Jaguar

On Thursday 1st March, Jaguar will livestream the global premiere of its first electric vehicle (EV), the I-PACE at 18:00 GMT. 
 

The I-PACE is Jaguar’s newest member of the PACE family and is the EV drivers have been waiting for, delivering sustainable sports car performance, all-wheel-drive agility and five-seat SUV practicality.

The I-PACE will be capable of rapid charging from zero to 80 per cent in 85 minutes* and has been rigorously tested across extremes of terrain and temperatures from -40°C to 40°C.

SWEDEN’S EINRIDE TO EXHIBIT A NEW TYPE OF VEHICLE, THE T-POD, AT 2018 NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW IN DETROIT

Swedish technology company Einride will present a new type of vehicle, the T-pod, to the American market at the 2018 North American International Auto show in Detroit Jan 13-28, 2018. The T-Pod is an electric autonomous transport vehicle that is designed and developed to be competitive to heavy-duty trucks.

The Einride T-Pod is invented and designed from the ground up for battery, electric propulsion and self-driving technology. For example, the T-pod has no cab or driver’s seat. Einride’s T-pod is a part of a transport system that uses the benefits of self-driving and electric propulsion to create a cost-competitive and emission-free transport alternative.

“The T-pod is part of the Einride transport system that uses new technology to create a cost-competitive and sustainable alternative to today’s trucks. This invention makes today´s truck as outdated as horse and carriage and just as cost completive,” commented Robert Falck, CEO of Einride.

Fisker is also developing a highly sophisticated and thermally advanced battery pack for the EMotion that will package the largest amount of LG Chem cells ever seen before in an EV.
    • Safety: The EMotion will feature the highest battery safety features in the industry at cell, module and pack level. 
  • Charging Technology: Fisker is working on its Ultra Charger™ in close collaboration with one of the world’s premiere engineering companies, to fast charge EVs/hybrids (not just Fiskers) in ways that have never even been dreamed in the industry.
