Norwegian Air Customers Donate to UNICEF

$3 Million Donated to UNICEF by Norwegian Air Passengers

Customers of Norwegian Air, the World’s Best Low-Cost Long-Haul Airline and Value Airline of the Year, have donated a total of three million dollars since a donation option was introduced to the booking process in July 2015.

Within its first year, the new donation option raised more than $720,000, and in July 2018, Norwegian introduced onboard donations featured in the personal in-flight entertainment system on its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet. American passengers are among the top donors with Californians donating the most to UNICEF.

Norwegian and UNICEF established its signature partnership in 2007. Since then the airline has supported various initiatives, which also includes its “Fill a Plane” campaign, saving hundreds of thousands of children. Five humanitarian flights carried out since 2014 have brought tons of emergency aid to the Central African Republic; the world’s second-largest refugee camp, Za’atari in Jordan; Mali; to Djibouti for relief to Yemen; and last year, to Chad.

Through the booking process customers can choose to donate $3, $5, $10 or $15, which will go directly to UNICEF. Donations can support the following:

  • $3 can provide a life-saving mosquito net, which will protect newborns against malaria;
  • $5 can enable UNICEF to vaccinate 20 children against polio;
  • $10 can provide an entire class of 20 students with exercise books; and
  • $15 can buy 38 packets of therapeutic food – enough for two-weeks of treatment for a malnourished child.

Norwegian passengers donate the most as they also represent the largest nationality of the airline’s customer base. Most generous per donation, however, are the Danes. Among American customers, passengers out of Oakland are the most generous per donation (average $5.50 donation), followed by Los Angeles ($5.40) and New Yorkers ($5.08), although in total, more New Yorkers donated as the city is home to most Norwegian routes.

Last year, nine Norwegian employees also raised more than $50,000 by representing the airline and UNICEF during the NYC Marathon. This year, another group of employees will do the same.

Tzu Chi USA Spreads Love After California Wildfires

The Camp Fire, which began on November 8, is now the deadliest wildfire in California history with 44 fatalities.It razed through more than 117,000 acres in Northern California and destroyed over 7,000 buildings. The Woolsey Fire, too, has burned through more than 93,000 acres and destroyed at least 435 structures in Los Angeles County.

Once these fires started, Tzu Chi USA’s Northwest Regional Office volunteers quickly mobilized. On November 9 & 10, they distributed emergency supplies including 550 blankets to residents sheltered at the Neighborhood Church of Chico to offer residents physical comfort as the flames continue. Some slept in their own vehicles and others were forced to sleep on the lawn.

In Southern California, too, Tzu Chi volunteers assessed the situation at shelters across Los Angeles (including at the Palisades Charter High School, Taft High School, Pierce College, and Canoga Park High School) to see what they could do to help.

There is still a concern for the region’s safety, as fierce winds lingering in the region are anticipated to start two major wildfires west of Los Angeles, including one that has already killed two in Malibu. Starting Tuesday, November 13, these winds may escalate to hurricane-like force. Residents of this region are still at risk of critical danger, and Tzu Chi USA’s headquarters has already completed its first assessment and is ready for its next steps.

Until further aid may be given, Tzu Chi volunteers from across the country will head a street fundraising campaign this weekend across the US to raise funds for those who’ve suffered severe losses through California’s fires. Volunteers from Tzu Chi’s Northwestern Regional office will also continue to distribute blankets to help residents stay warm.

BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S AUCTION

A fashion and cinematic icon, Audrey Hepburn was one of the most beautiful women ever to grace a Hollywood screen, and her most famous film was undoubtedly ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.

Thanks to her, the whole concept of the ‘little black dress’ became a thing, and Holly Golightly – the star of the film – became a household name. Seth Rogen’s Hilarity for Charity

It was a night to remember in Los Angeles as Seth Rogen, along with a star-studded cast, came together to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease at his 6th annual Hilarity for Charity variety show (On Mar 24). Thought you could use in any weekend celebrity round-ups you may be working on.

As the premier spirit of the event, comedians and guests alike were able to sip and savor a variety of Crown Royal cocktails while kicking back and enjoying a few laughs – all while doing some good. Crown Royal also gifted their generous host, Seth Rogen with a custom embroidered bag and bottle of Crown Royal XR.

UMW Shadow Event Raises Campus Awareness Of Sexual Assault

The University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia held its first ever Shadow Event on Tuesday, November 14. The event was put on by UMW’s Where is the Line?, a club dedicated to raising awareness for sexual assault and domestic violence as well as providing support to survivors and empowering people to restore the hope that was lost. The club is affiliated with the Fear2Freedom organization.

The Shadow Event was held in on campus Dodd Auditorium. 6 survivors were given the opportunity to share their stories anonymously. A large, back light projection screen was set up in the center of the stage and each speaker had a designated color light that illuminated their silhouette to the audience. There were 5 female speakers and 1 male at the November 14 event. Over 100 students from the small school were in attendance to show their support. Representatives from the local prevention and support organization, Rappahannock Council Against Sexual Assault (RCASA), were also in attendance to provide counseling to audience members who may have been triggered by the speeches. In addition to the 6 speakers, there were singers that performed a song every 2 speeches to allow audience members to recollect themselves and take a mental break. Tori Power of the school’s show choir group covered Sara Bareilles’ “Brave”, Ellé Antzoulatos, WITL’s marketing coordinator, sang Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb”, and Rachel Lynch, a dedicated member of WITL, sang an a Capella version of Jeff Buckley’s “Hallejuah”. The audience members were given a set of colored notecards and a pencil upon arrival and had the opportunity to write words of encouragement to each speaker. The notes have been screened by club members and will be given to each survivor who spoke to help with the healing process.

The event was a tremendous success and WITL has begun planning and preparation for this spring’s Celebration Event, an interactive event where students will put together after care kits for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence to receive upon intake into a shelter or at the beginning of a rape kit. ere is the Line is a club dedicated to the prevention of and spreading awareness about sexual assault and domestic violence. The club hosts events and projects to aid survivors as well as educating peers about the issue. Founded by Nicole Lind and Kelsey Welsh in January 2017.

Circle V Ranch Camp & Retreat Center to Rebuild After Wildfire Closes Facility

~1,000 Summer Session Campers & 1,800 Retreat Center Guests Displaced Through May 2018


Santa Barbara County, California—On Saturday, July 8, 2017, the Whittier wildfire began in Santa Barbara County and burned through nearby St. Vincent de Paul Circle V (Vee) Ranch Camp & Retreat Center at 2550 Highway 154 across from Cachuma Lake. The facility was founded in 1945 and has been located on 30 acres leased in the Los Padres National Forest since 1990.
 
David Fields, Executive Director of St. Vincent de Paul of Los Angeles, operators of Circle V Ranch Camp announced, “We are so very grateful that all 88 campers and 36 staff members present on July 8th were evacuated safely during the wildfire. However, the Craft Lodge and Health Lodge cabins burned to the ground, and our water treatment facility and pipes were seriously damaged requiring months of repairs estimated at more than $200,000. With no water, all remaining summer camp sessions had to be cancelled. The timing could not be worse since the wildfire has deprived almost 1,000 campers ages 7-16 of this positive, uplifting six day/five night experience in nature creating memories for a lifetime.”

Additionally, dozens of groups planning to stay at the Camp’s Retreat Center from September 2017 through May 2018 have been cancelled resulting in the displacement of more than 1,800 guests.
Fields emphasized, “We are cleaning up and rebuilding Circle V Ranch Camp & Retreat Center. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in June 2018. More About St. Vincent de Paul Circle V Ranch Camp

Circle V Ranch Camp & Retreat Center was founded in 1945 by St. Vincent de Paul Los Angeles and has been located on its current site on 30 acres in the Los Padres National Forest in Santa Barbara County since 1990. Each Circle V Ranch Camp summer session is six days and five nights of traditional supervised fun for boys and girls ages 7 to 13 and campers in leadership training from ages 14-17. Campers enjoy activities including archery, arts & crafts, hiking, swimming in the pool, learning about nature, reading skills, painting, photography, playing baseball, basketball, ping pong, foosball, soccer, miniature golf and of course, campfires, skits and singing. There is no TV, radio or internet access to affect the experience. Campers stay in wood cabins or traditional canvas tents. Three nutritious daily meals served family-style in the Dining Lodge are not only for food but also for camaraderie and fellowship.
In summer 2016, the camp hosted more than 1,000 children for this time-honored experience. The Circle V Ranch Camp fee for six days/ five nights including lodging, all meals, activities, recreation and supervised fun is $450 per child. “Camperships” (scholarship funds made by individuals and groups’ donations) are available for qualified campers. Rapper Jahmila Sandifer, known as Jay Hype, teamed up with California retailer, PacSun, to bring her Clothes-N-Vibes clothing drive initiative to Downtown Los Angeles on August 5th. 

The public event accepted donations of new or gently used men’s, women’s, teen & kids clothing and shoes which will be delivered to the Los Angeles Mission. Attendees experienced live performances by Jay Hype, Dice Soho and DJ sets by ssticks and Mad Bad Ting. Beverages were provided by Boxed Water and Red Bull
