January Art Walk Must-Sees

The Downtown Art Walk returns on Thursday, January 10th in the galleries and artist studios of Downtown Los Angeles! Begin your evening at the Spring Arts Collective inside The Last Bookstore at 453 S. Spring St., from 6-9PM. Enter the bookstore at 5th at Spring, and walk up the stairs to the mezzanine. Roughly 30 local galleries and art spaces participate in the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk on the 2nd Thursday of each month. Worldbuilding

Worldbuilding is a group exhibition at DAC Gallery curated by Sarah Julig that explores a range of modalities through artists’ use of ceramics, digital animation, and mixed media to convey complex personal mythologies. The exhibition explores the contrasts between ceramics and digital animation, both in processes and historic lineages, exploring how contemporary artists use these divergent mediums to search their own internal narratives. Worldbuilding is on view during the January 10th Art Walk from 5-8pm, and through February 2nd. | MORE

On the January 10th Downtown Art Walk, The Hive welcomes the new year with the launch of “Hive Tarot 10″, featuring original tarot card artwork by 22 Hive artists from 2018 for the soon to be printed HIVE TAROT 10 deck. On the January 10th Art Walk, The Independent Theater will be the site of LA Story # 1, featuring live variety–style musical performances produced and curated by local artist and creative director Gail Zone. Zone. Performances begin with a Video Art Gallery, featuring the premiere screening of “Botany of Desire” by Sean Yang, followed by “Sand & Snjor” by Fridgeir Trausti Helgason, and additional videos by Jason Ruscio, and J-Walt’s Lucid Dreamscapes. LA Story # 1 is comprised of musical performances in 3 acts, set in the Pueblo de Los Angeles. | MORE

HAPPENINGS IN SEPTEMBER AT ARTWALK

“From Street to Canvas”

This September, the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk is pleased to present “From Street to Canvas”, an exhibition featuring work by artists Clinton Bopp, Davia King, Moncho, and Hannah Webb. The show, which brings together four diverse, equally prolific L.A. street artists, is designed to shine a spotlight on community beautification projects like those spearheaded by Beautify Earth, StartLA, and Gabba Gallery, and the many talented artists that helped contribute to their success. Co-curated by Lara Dildy of the Downtown Art Walk and LA street art photographer Ari Sturm, this one-night event will offer viewers a taste of the creative and imaginative public art pieces currently found in neighborhoods throughout greater Los Angeles.

“From Street to Canvas” will be exhibiting at the Art Walk Lounge, located at 634 S. Spring Street, from 6 to 10pm on Thursday, September 14th.

Participating galleries for this month’s Downtown Art Walk event include: MB Abram Gallery, Avenue des Arts Gallery, The Main Museum, The Fine Arts Building, Ren Gallery, Gloria Delson Contemporary Arts Gallery, The Hive, The Spring Arts Collective, Little Tokyo Art Complex, El Playground Gallery, These Days, and Lobby Gallery.

The Downtown Art Walk is pleased to welcome COS to DTLA! COS is a modern, design-led fashion brand which takes inspiration from the worlds of art and architecture. Beginning on September 7th, the DAC Gallery will exhibit “The, Their, Likeness” a group exhibition featuring paintings, drawings, prints and ceramic by artists from all four Exceptional Children’s Foundation (ECF) Art Centers programs reflecting on the idea of a portrait. This September, Please Do Not Enter presents “The Golden Superheroes” by French artist Xavier Noel. In his first North American solo show, Xavier delivers the hybrid of contemporary archaic pop culture and the ornamentation of 18th century in the form of masks and fetishes. Xavier uses disparate elements such as balls of wool, feathers, pearls, ribbons, logos of sportswear brands and diverse figurines.
