Valentino’s Latest Collaboration

Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino and Jun Takahashi of Undercover discuss how the reopening of the Valentino flagship store in Ginza, Japan brought the two designers together to create diverse and inclusive collections like never seen before.

 -Piccioli on collaborating with Takahashi: “The thing that interests me the most about collaborating with a designer like Jun is not the technical creative process in itself but the human exchange and, in our case, the cultural dialogue. That’s how you continuously learn and teach.”

-Takahashi on his inclusion of roses in the women’s collection: “Roses are beautiful, but they also have thorns. I am always attracted to this kind of duality, and this is at least why I chose them.”

The performers transitioned gracefully through dozens of choreographed formations like moving architecture, all styled in Paola Hernandez’s latest collection. For their Fall/Winter 2019 collection, the Paola Hernandez fashion label decided to tell their story through an impressive two-hour modern dance performance, innovatively marketing all the goods of their latest designs. The dancers from the Elisa Monte Dance company showed the practically of Paola Hernandez through motion and the brand’s message of inclusivity through the diversity of shapes and sizes.

Practically and urban minimalism were major highlights from Paola Hernandez’s fashion instillation; the models looked nothing less than sharp wearing jeans, detailed white sweaters, knit black sweaters, large cardigans, unique black dresses, tights, jumpers and blouses. The quality of fabric and fabric details seemed to be a major emphasis. The color pallet consisted of all neutral colors like black, grey and white; sometimes simplicity, when done with chic flair, can be a cheeky fashion statement.

Born in Mexico City, Paola Hernandez now manages her fashion line in Brooklyn, New York. Prior to studying fashion at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London, Hernandez studied philosophy, an educational background she uses as inspiration for her symbolic and contemporary fashion brand.

Celebrity guests who were in attendance include Savannah Kennick (“Arrested Development”) Skye Tunes, Broderick Hunter, D’Andra Simmons (“The Real Housewives of Dallas”) Jennifer Lynn DeCllis (Miss New Jersey) and more.

In addition to the street style collaborations, Michael Kuluva designed a special line with CLIQ Jewelry. n 2016 and in collaboration with CreakyJoints®, the digital, patient-driven arthritis community, Michael spoke out about his experience with Rheumatoid Arthritis and has now prepared a special accessory line for Tumbler and Tipsy consisting of jewelry with CLIQ technology. CLIQ Jewelry, a Philadelphia-based jewelry manufacturer, understands that traditional rings must be large enough to pass over the knuckle, causing them to twist, turn and slip off. Fashion and Social media influencer Urszula Makowska is a fashionable New Yorker with over 116k followers on Instagram. She was invited to almost every event of the New York Fashion Week. Urszula is influencing others with her fashion style and at this occasion, she had an interview that revealed what the fashion trends are of 2018, as seen at the NYFW.

As a fashion blogger, what were you looking forward to seeing in New York Fashion week?

The most exciting time of the year for bloggers is always fashion week. This time of the year is the busiest for us. We plan our outfits and the events we will attend in advance. We work hard to coordinate everything to perfection including travel and hotel stays.

Personally, I love fashion week. For me, it is extremely exciting. I am a fashion addict and I love to attend shows and presentations to view the upcoming trends for the next seasons. I love to see what designers have created for the upcoming seasons. It is all a work of art and a way to express yourself. Then I love to share the upcoming trends with my followers and readers. During this F/W 2018 New York Fashion Week, I was super excited to attend my shows since I officially received over 40 invitations, and this included some of the big designers from Badgley Mischka to BCBG Maxazria. I was extremely proud of myself to have the ability to attend my shows and presentations. It has shown me how far I came into my career as a blogger. I was also looking forward to not only attending the shows and events, but also seeing friends who were flying into New York City, networking, meeting other bloggers, and working together with photographers to take photos of my looks.

Why is it important for a fashion blogger to attend Fashion Week?

Fashion week is extremely important for any fashion blogger and fashion influencer. Now-in-days, we bloggers and influencers hold the power to influencing and generating sales. We dominate the market and this directly means that we always have to be on top of the upcoming trends. Followers and readers look up to us as having the knowledge of our niche and market. They know us as the experts for getting style inspiration or simply buying what we are wearing or using. Fashion week allows us to keep up with the upcoming trends. We are able to see what products will be hot for the next season and how they can be styled. We are able to see the new trends before anyone else and we are able to introduce these new innovations to our followers and readers.

Aside from that, attending fashion week is also important to us in terms of networking. By attending these events, we are meeting people constantly. These people may be bloggers, editors, or photographers. We have the ability to form a relationship and partner together in the future. I know I personally have met a lot of people this season and I created strong friendships with them. We are always working together and supporting one another. At the end of the day, this only benefits you.

What was your best event so far from NYFW and why?

The best event from NYFW for me was going backstage with Aveda for Tibi. I personally love Tibi and have always wanted to attend one of their shows. Tibi’s fashion shows are extremely popular. A lot of bloggers always want to attend Tibi’s show. Luckily, I was able to go backstage with Aveda since I have a strong relationship with Aveda as one of their influencers. I was able to see the full on hair trends, hair tips, hair inspirations, makeup trends, makeup inspirations, and looks beforehand. I was extremely happy to see everything beforehand, but to learn a lot myself. I was happy to network and see my Aveda family.

Which look was your favorite look that you wore to NYFW?

One of my favorite looks for the shows was the classic Chanel themed look I went for from the S/S 2018 show. I bought a cute classic Zara dress and jacket that looked similar to the Chanel vibes from their S/S 2018 show. I layered a lilac turtleneck under the dress and paired it off with Kanye West Tubular shoes.

Which fashion trends are going to be popular this year according to NYFW?

There are a lot of upcoming trends that I saw during the F/W 2018/2019 shows that I am looking forward to.

Currently plaid is in, but don’t worry, it is not leaving anywhere anytime soon. For the upcoming seasons, we will see plaid like never before. It will be bolder than ever. We will be making statements in plaid. Plaid in saturated hues such as hot pink will be hotter than ever. During NYFW plenty of designers showcased plaid suits in hot pink and they were incredible.

Regarding outerwear, puffers, fur, and trench coats will be in trend. They will be more dramatic than ever. They will catch anyone’s eyes. We saw puffers on the runway in bright hues and extremely oversized. That is how we will see them in the fall and winter. Fur jackets were seen in bright colors from yellow to red. Trench coats were seen in leopard prints everywhere during NYFW.

One new trend that was introduced the new crop top silhouette. This top is a part bathing suit, part sports bra, and part strapless bra with underwire. It was seen a lot on the runway and will be extremely popular.

In terms of color trends, red and hot pink will be the hottest colors of the season. We saw bright pink everywhere on the runway from tops to shoes. We also saw red dominate from head to toe. The most exciting part is that the combination of pink and red will be extremely popular. Most designers used a combination of both of their pieces.

What is your personal favorite trend from NYFW?

One of my personal favorite trends will be tea length floral dresses. During the shows, these dresses were paired with cute booties. I am a big fan of booties and floral prints. I find this trend to be extremely chic, but casual. It is perfect for any person to easily put together for any occasion.

Human and canine residents of New York are getting a special treat! Dog-friendly café Boris & Horton has opened its doors, operating seven days a week at the corner of Avenue A and 12th Street in downtown Manhattan.

Boris & Horton is an upscale café that features food & beverage from beloved local vendors including City of Saints Coffee Roasters, Murray’s Cheese, and Balthazar. The layout of Boris & Horton’s prime corner location means that with or without a canine companion, the space has room for everyone. Working within Department of Health guidelines, the café is split into two distinct areas – the coffee bar, which is for humans only, and the dog side, which welcomes people and their pets.

Those who come by themselves with a dog will order their drinks and food from Boris & Horton’s 12th Street walk-up window, and then head to the dog side, which features café style seating, boutique pet merchandise and a photo booth. For guests visiting with dogs and a human companion, one person can grab a table on the dog side while the other heads into the coffee bar through a vestibule connection, to pick up food & beverage.

Tell us about your new album. How did it come together? Who did you work with?

  • My new album! It’s called I Only See You When I’m Dreamin’ and I had an awesome opportunity to work with a bunch of different people on this project. Amazing artists, writers and producers. Everyone involved in this album helped to push me out of my comfort zones and create everything I could’ve wanted. I had such a specific vision for this project. I was having vivid dreams of someone who I no longer speak to and these songs reflect that person and specific moments of my past. I’m so happy with the overall outcome and I’m so excited for everyone to listen!! Shout out to Marko Penn, Isaac Valens, The 87’s, MNDR & Rey Reel

I love them all for different reasons! There’s some slaps, some with more emotional vibes and even a couple voice notes from people close to me. It was a process of gathering these songs over the course of two years so they’re all special to me. 

 

—It’s been 5 years since your debut album. Since then you’ve put out some mixtape EPs and singles. Why the long gap in between LPs?   

  • Honestly, the timing never felt right to release album 2 until now. I had been through a lawsuit for a year and a half where I couldn’t release music, my daughter was born with a gnarly birth defect that had us living in and out of the hospital, I never stopped touring and I was in the studio a bunch, so everything felt very intense for a few years. I needed to keep living, experiencing and finally come around to putting together songs that felt right. I had the opportunity coming off of having successful songs in the past to be true to myself and be patient. And one day the list of songs came together, the title and I knew it was right!

—How have you changed since your debut album? Musically and personally?

  • I’ve grown up a bit since my first project. I’ve grown more aware and appreciative of life and opportunity. I still love to pop bottles though lol! But I think the lessons I’ve learned in the past 5 years have been crucial to me becoming the BEST ME & I’m getting there. 

—How do you think your fans will react to this new body of music? And do you feel like it’s different from the previous music you’ve put out?    

  • I hope they’ll love it! I hope it makes them happy and want to have a good time! I think this project isn’t as “dancey” if you will – as my first project, but the core of who I am is still very present. Times have changed and music continues to change, so there’s obvious differences, but it’s still allllllll me!

 

—Can fans expect to see you on tour soon?

  • Yes! I’ll be announcing dates very soon! I can’t wait to get back on the road. 

 
—Any fun stories from the studio you can share?

  • So many fun times recording this project! I’ll never forget the night I was working on ‘come at me’ and when I was finished we opened all the doors to the outside are and played it super loud and I remember feeling infinite. All of a sudden all the crazy shit I went through in the past 5 years didn’t matter/we’re okay. I felt strong. I’m sure the neighbors hated that I played it 100 times haha but I couldn’t help it. It was awesome. That feeling is why I make music, it’s pretty indescribable. 

—What are the most important lessons you have learned on your journey in the music industry?

  • The most important lessons: stay true to yourself, no one else can ever be you even if they try! Surround yourself with the right people, people who believe in you even when you might slightly question yourself. Work hard and then work even harder. And live in the moment! Music is a magical thing.

  • Robyn. Karen O. Nelly Furtado. Gwen Stefani. Flume. Mnek. Mo. I don’t know I’m a fan of so many people!

  •  It’s light. Wild. Fun. Top down on an unexpected road trip type album.
