Fun Ways to Spend Your Free Time

What do you do in your free time? Does it cost you lots of money? Unfortunately, while there may be many different ways you can enjoy your free time, many of them cost money. Think how much it costs to go out to dinner, spend the afternoon shopping, or take a trip away. Free time is a precious commodity, and you want to enjoy it as much as possible. However, not everyone has a bottomless pit filled with money. Would you like some ways of enjoying your free time that won’t cost an arm and a leg? Keep reading for the top four suggestions.

Find a New Hobby

If you haven’t already got a hobby, now’s the time to acquire one. There are plenty of options, and you can spend as little or as much as you want. Why not learn a new language? It will benefit your career as well as exercise your brain. Get outside more perhaps, and try hiking. Business Insider discusses how being outside and at one with nature is beneficial for your mental and physical health. It is also a way of meeting new people and learning more about the environment.

Volunteer for a Good Cause

Do you have a favorite charity? Would you like to help at your local animal sanctuary? There are many different things you can do to help your local community. Volunteer with a friend or go it alone and it will be a very rewarding way to spend your free time. It doesn’t matter how or where you do it. You’ll feel happy that you’ve played a part in bettering the local area.

Get fit

Healthline discusses how regular exercise is good for you in many different ways. It is important for your mental and physical health. Half an hour’s exercise after work or at the weekend gets your blood pumping and your endorphins flowing. It builds muscle, burns calories, and oxygenates your brain. Exercise is also a great de-stressor and helps you to stay disciplined.

Exercise Your Brain

Exercising your brain improves its functioning and prevents it from becoming sluggish. As you get older, your brain also gets smaller and loses its cognitive reserve. There has been plenty of research in regards to the benefit of exercise for your body, and more recent research is now showing that exercising your brain also has its benefits. You can choose to do it in several different ways. Make a list of grocery items, things to do, car models, or anything else you can think of. Leave it for an hour and then come back and see how many items you can recall. Learn to play a musical instrument or join a choir. Learn a foreign language, play casino games at Unibet, do number or word puzzles, or take up a new hobby that requires fine-motor skills.

Enjoying your free time is important. Therefore, it’s vital you choose activities you enjoy. It’s better that some of them don’t require large amounts of money because then you can spend more time doing them. The activities you choose should be enjoyable as this helps you to unwind when you’re not at work.

Petersen Automotive Museum Opens New “Legends of Los Angeles” Exhibit

On November 10, 2018, the Petersen Automotive Museum opened its latest exhibit, “Legends of Los Angeles: Southern California Race Cars and Their Builders,” in the Charles Nearburg Family Gallery presented by Lucas Oil. The display features 12 Los Angeles-built race cars powered by engineering masterminds such as Ed “The Old Master” Pink and Fred Offenhauser and piloted by legends such as Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, Parnelli Jones, Bill Stroppe and Dan Gurney.

“Legends of LA” is highlighted by a stunning180-degree panoramic video, which surrounds the collection of race cars and provides an immersive way to experience the fastest race cars ever built in Los Angeles as they are raced on the region’s famed tracks. Featuring vehicles from every major racing type including midgets, sprint cars, dragsters, off-road cars, IndyCars, land-speed cars and road-racing cars, the panoramic video works alongside the display to take viewers on a visual journey down historic tracks such as El Mirage, Willow Springs International Raceway and Perris Auto Speedway.

Key vehicles on display include a 1963 Ol’Yaller Mark IX, which was one of the last race cars designed and built by Southern California hot rod legend Max Balchowsky; a 1964 Shelby Cobra 289 FIA, one of five FIA-spec factory team cars that competed in the 1964 World Championship and was raced by Dan Gurney in the Targa Florio; a 1967 Long 
“Shelby Super Snake” with an Ed Pink racing engine, which made history when driver Done Prudhomme accomplished four quarter-mile runs in the six-second range at the 1967 NHRA Spring Nationals; and Big Oly, a 1970 Ford Bronco which was raced to a back-to-back victories at the Baja 1000 in 1971 and 1972 by the legendary off-roading team of Parnelli Jones and Bill Stroppe.

“From the early years of auto racing to today, Los Angeles has played a key role in the development and growth of motorsports in North America,” said Executive Director Terry L. Karges. “Our new exhibit honors the region’s rich history through some of the finest examples of race car engineering and design, telling a comprehensive story about the legends that helped establish Los Angeles as the diverse racing destination that is today.”

Preceding the public opening, the Petersen hosted a formal cocktail reception and media preview on Thursday, November 8, 2018. The evening paid homage to LA-based racing icon and race car constructor Parnelli Jones, a motorsports legend known for his victories in nearly every major auto racing event in the United States. Jones, whose voice is featured in the gallery video was praised on stage while guests bid on his signed racing memorabilia during a silent auction.

Continuing a 22-year holiday tradition, Cash Money Records will host its annual turkey giveaway in New Orleans, LA on Tuesday, November 20th. Services span testing for glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure, dental care, eye exams, quick look EKG’s, stroke assessment, and more. Attendees may receive counseling and information on heart healthy diet, kidney disease, pre-natal care, and diabetes as well as smoking cessation programs and healthy recipe books.

Also, for the fifth year, Dr. David Liang [Director, Stanford Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease] and his staff administer Aortic Disease and Marfan Syndrome heart screenings.

Audible Vehicle Alert System Developed by Jaguar to Protect Road Users

Jaguar has developed an Audible Vehicle Alert System (AVAS) for the I-PACE, to warn vulnerable road users as the electric vehicle approaches

With no engine sound, the electric Jaguar I-PACE required a new way to warn blind, visually impaired and other vulnerable road users   of its approach at low speed.

Jaguar has designed a unique Audible Vehicle Alert System (AVAS) for its first electric vehicle – developing a sound that can be heard at speeds up to 20km/h and exceeds the 56dB(A) minimum required by forthcoming European legislation for all new electric vehicles (EVs) from July 2019.

The I-PACE’s sound was tested by members of Guide Dogs for the Blind, the UK’s leading charity for people affected by sight loss, as part of the testing undertaken by Jaguar. It also marks the start of an on-going relationship between the two organisations.

Jaguar’s engineers worked for four years to develop a soundtrack that is audible yet discreet and cannot be heard from inside the vehicle. Initial attempts to create a noise inspired by the sound of sci-fi spacecraft had to be shelved after pedestrians reacted by looking up to the sky, rather than at the road, as the vehicle approached.

Engineers tested sounds in a number of environments, including an anechoic chamber (specialist echo-free room) and various urban scenarios, before settling on the final sound for the I-PACE. It is emitted from a speaker located behind the front grille, can be heard in every direction and cannot be disengaged.

The alert increases in pitch and volume in line with the speed of the vehicle and, when in reverse, is accompanied by an additional tone that indicates the change in direction. AVAS is not required at higher speeds as there is sufficient wind and tyre noise for pedestrians to hear the zero-emissions vehicle approaching.

Iain Suffield, Jaguar NVH Technical Specialist, said:

“The absence of traditional engine noise from electric vehicles creates a problem for vulnerable pedestrians, such as the blind or visually impaired. This is especially true at low speeds in town centres and car parks. We developed the Audible Vehicle Alert System for the I-PACE to ensure the safety of all road users. Our potentially life-saving technology cannot be switched off and as the leading charity for people with sight loss, we are pleased to have the support of Guide Dogs to ensure real people are at the heart of our product testing.”

Built for the Lenovo Mirage Solo with Daydream, Starlight Xperience features a state-of-the-art and hospital-ready headset that comes preloaded with age-appropriate and dynamic content geared toward entertainment and distraction for hospitalized kids, which has been specifically modified to meet strict infection safety protocols for use in hospital settings. Pre-loaded content includes educational field trips to exotic locations through Google Expeditions and Street View, fun interactive stories like Star Wars: Droid Repair Bay by ILMxLAB, and Lola and the Giant, popular apps such as Ocean Rift and Hello Mars, and meditation exercises and therapeutic games such as Relax VR, which allows the patient to escape into beautiful environments.

Starlight Xperience was developed in part through a series of grants provided by Starlight to the CHARIOT program (short for Childhood Anxiety Reduction through Innovation and Technology) at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. CHARIOT implements new technologies in the hospital that are nontraditional yet familiar to children to engage and distract them during stressful or painful procedures, keeping clinical usage in mind and improving upon the typical hospital experience. This past summer, Starlight Xperience was soft launched and tested at five children’s hospitals: Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, Minn., and Texas Children’s Hospital.

“At Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, virtual reality has been a fantastic addition for our patients,” said Chantel Barney, Ph.D., a clinical scientist who leads Gillette’s VR program. “In some instances, we’ve been able to curb the anxiety and fears our kids typically experience during procedures such as blood draws, transfusions, wound cleanings, casting and more. It’s a wonderful distraction for kids and parents alike.”

Q&A With Todd Schireson, Abell Auction Co.

Vice President of Abell Auction Company, Todd Schireson, gives a one-on-one personal interview regarding his business as well as his family’s legacy.

Q: How does one become a curator for an auction?

A: Although I have a BA Degree in Business/Economics, I grew up surrounded by antiques and fine art through the family business. I started taking an interest in design, and knew that I wanted to work in the art world.

Q: When did you realize that you wanted to continue your family’s legacy?

A: I was working in high-end residential management and was fortunate enough to work closely with some of the most important interior designers of the day. I became increasingly passionate about art and design, and started taking more of an interest in the auction business. My grandfather and father were both co-owners of the family auction house and it was a natural step to take in my mid-twenties.

Q: What type of research have you conducted in order to keep your pulse on the millennial consumer?

A: My research comes from years of experience as an auctioneer watching what different age groups are buying. We have changed our business format to encompass more millennial buyers. We hold specialty auctions, especially featuring more mid-century and luxury goods to accommodate that market.

Q: Do you consider yourself a philanthropist? Does any of your proceeds at your auction go towards any humanitarian efforts?

A: All of the auctioneers at Abell including myself donate our time to doing charitable auction events. I recently served as an auctioneer for the Jane Goodall foundation charity auction, and have done cancer foundation auctions as well.

Q: Describe your most eclectic find for this youthful market segment?

A: Every so often we come across really fun estates in Southern California. One estate that a youthful market responded well to was a single-owner men’s sneaker collection. We sold more than 200 pairs of collectible, new, in-box sneakers.

Q: How do you select a location for your pop-up engagements?

A: We selected a location based off of a diverse, younger, affluent market. We typically use the Venice area for its walkable neighborhood and the educated art community present.

Q: What advice would you give to someone aspiring to be an auctioneer?

A: The main facets of being an auctioneer are obtaining merchandise and selling merchandise. For both you have to know your customer base, know what look is selling, and be educated about any piece that could come across an auction house.

Q: Is there anything you wish us to know about your next endeavors?

A: We are taking a 102-year-old business and bring it into the 21st century by becoming more accessible online, to reach an audience that can’t necessarily be here in person.

Q: Are you tackling other markets besides LA? National? International?

A: We have a solid base in Southern California, but have expanded into Palm Springs, Northern California and Las Vegas. We are an internationally and nationally recognized auction house; our expansion into the international markets has been a result of expanding online.

We provide Hospice and Palliative care through loving support to our residents under the age of 21 and their families during their difficult life challenges. BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S AUCTION

A fashion and cinematic icon, Audrey Hepburn was one of the most beautiful women ever to grace a Hollywood screen, and her most famous film was undoubtedly ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.

Thanks to her, the whole concept of the ‘little black dress’ became a thing, and Holly Golightly – the star of the film – became a household name. Now, you can own one of the most enduring images of cinema: an original, full-sized coloured photographer’s proof of Audrey Hepburn from the 1963 film, with Holly wearing that dress and that tiara.

Proceeds from this auction will go to the Help A Life Foundation, which was formed in 2007 with the goal of housing and educating adolescent orphaned girls in Ethiopia, and providing them with a secure and supportive environment.
