Fashion statements from The Players: How to wear pink on the golf course

Forget blending in. 2019 is all about standing out, and what better way to achieve this than with a bold colour like pink. Many people shy away from the shade because they think it’s hard to wear, but if you look at the golfing fashion highlights of 2018, many of them involved a pop of pink. Whatever you call it, either salmon, rose, blush or coral, there’s no denying that wearing pink is a challenge. If you’re up for the challenge, make sure you follow these style rules from the pros to avoid looking out of place on the green.

What better place to look for pink-spiration than the final day of the 2018 Players Championship. On this day, the players compete in an unofficial “pink out” to raise awareness for breast cancer charities. As a partner of The Donna Foundation, this offers the perfect opportunity for the players to show off their favourite pink threads. And it’s also the perfect opportunity for us to pick up some style tips. So, without further ado, here are six different ways to make pink work for you on the golf course in 2019.

The bold polo

Webb Simpson offered the perfect example of pink done right when he wore the FootJoy Stretch Pique golf shirt in berry. This bold choice was paired with a muted pair of khakis to avoid looking over the top. One thing that golfers should be aware of when choosing their shirt is the risk of creases. Since bright colours tend to accentuate creases, it’s important to reach for highly technical and anti-wrinkle fabrics if you are opting for a bold bright colour like this berry hue. Luckily for Simpson, he did just this and looked sharp for his victory.

The muted hues

Wearing pink doesn’t have to be a brash choice. If you’re not excited about making a brash statement, opt for a pale pink. At the 2018 PGA tour, we saw Xander Schauffele use this styling choice to create a sleek and professional look. Having an athletic build means that he can get away with more than most, but he certainly hit a hole in one with this fashion choice. If you’re planning to wear a light pink striped polo similar to Schauffele, pair it with a light grey pair of pants.

Verging on red

If you’re looking for a low-risk choice on the golf course, opt for a hue that could almost be considered red. Jordan Spieth tried this look at the 2018 PGA tour and the result was magnificent. His Under Armour UA Playoff golf shirt featured thick pink stripes which gave the shirt an almost pomegranate red look. However, if you look at the detailing around the collar and on the buttons, you’ll see a much brighter shade of blush. The safest colour to pair with pink is grey, and Spieth managed this with ease.

Preppy trousers

Perhaps the boldest look on the golf course is pink pants. These can range from baby pink to bright magenta. The only rule you need to follow is that you wear them with confidence. These pink PUMA golf pants are the perfect choice for summer and create an effortlessly preppy look. Choose a brighter colour if you don’t want people wondering if you accidentally washed your white trousers with your favourite red shirt.

Accessorise with pink

If you aren’t ready for a pink golf shirt then you probably aren’t ready for pink golf pants either. Not to worry, as there are ways to accessorise with pink accents. This look is modern and stylish without being too outlandish. If you play at a more conservative golf club and are worried about ruffling feathers, then this is the way to go. At the 2018 PGA tour, Bryson DeChambeau showed us how it is done with this PUMA Ignite Pwradapt Golf Shoes. These feature a distinctive pink heel and a pink logo. DeChambeau’s were also customised with the word “mom” and a bright pink heart. There’s no need to go this far, but we’re sure your mum will appreciate the thought.

Pink fail

Continuing with the pink trend and tributes to his mother, DeChambeau also toted a distinctive bright pink Cobra golf bag for the day. Similarly emblazoned with the “mom” motif, it was a nice sentiment, but not one that we would suggest you try to follow. With the selection of pink golf bags available, it’s going to be hard to pull it off without looking like you just picked up the wrong golf bag in the clubhouse. If you really want to try the pink trend on the golf course, you’re far better off with accents of pink rather than overhauling your core items in a shocking hue.

In summary, there are plenty of ways to wear pink on the golf course, and we expect it to be a very popular shade in 2019. Just make sure you wear it with intention, or you could end up looking like you accidentally turned your favourite white polo pink in the wash.

A SEASON OF MILESTONES FOR FORMULA 1®

Next week the 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship™ starts with the FORMULA 1 ROLEX AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX 2019. Motorsport’s pinnacle series will take to the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 March, launching the 70th Formula 1® championship. Formula 1® attracts fans from across the world, captivated by the sport’s cutting-edge technology and its remarkable athletes in their quest for perfection. The competition’s enduring spirit, as well as its commitment to bold performance and innovation, aligns closely with Rolex’s own passion for continuous excellence. This season, Rolex marks its seventh consecutive year as a Global Partner and the Official Timepiece of Formula 1®.

In a move to improve overtaking, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and Formula 1® have introduced rules reducing aerodynamic turbulence from the front and rear wing, encouraging the cars to follow each other in close proximity. Rolex Testimonee and multiple Formula 1® race winner Mark Webber explains their impact: “The new regulations are designed to encourage drivers to get into a position to overtake. The cars should be more predictable, meaning the drivers will be more confident about creating exciting passing opportunities. There’s definitely a lot to look forward to this season and I think there will be a good fight for the championship. I hope it goes deep into the year – I really believe it will.”

The 2019 season, spanning March to December and consisting of 21 races around the world, will feature several milestones. Next month’s FORMULA 1 HEINEKEN CHINESE GRAND PRIX 2019 will be the championship’s 1,000th Grand Prix™. Since its first race in May 1950, Formula 1® has pioneered technology across the globe, showcasing legendary drivers behind the wheel of the most advanced racing cars. This May, the FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX DE MONACO 2019 celebrates 90 years since the inaugural race around the Principality’s famous streets and almost a century later the circuit still paves a virtually identical route. Rolex Testimonee and 2016 FIA Formula 1® Drivers’ World Champion Nico Rosberg highlights the importance of celebrating the sport’s past: “I’m very proud of the great heritage of Formula 1 and the small part I have played in its history. I look forward to being involved in these landmark occasions, to reflect and reminisce on the sport’s tremendous legacy and its exceptional achievements. Formula 1 continues to be one of the most technologically advanced sports in the world and these attributes – legacy, excellence and innovation – fit perfectly with Rolex.”

On 7 September 2019 at Monza (Italy), Sir Jackie Stewart, a Rolex Testimonee for more than half a century and three-time FIA Formula 1® Drivers’ World Champion, will celebrate 50 years to the day since he clinched his first championship. The Scottish legend, who marks the occasion at the same circuit where he sealed the crown in 1969, reflects on the milestone: “I’ve always felt emotion is dangerous for a racing driver, but I hope there is a little flush of it when I get to Monza this year. I’m incredibly proud, and fortunate, to have seen the sport grow in prestige as well as from a safety perspective, it’s a wonderful story. To honor the anniversary at one of the greatest race tracks in the world where I won my first championship is truly special and I look forward to a weekend full of celebrations.”

This season will feature several new driver partnerships, with only Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport and Rich Energy Haas F1® Team keeping the same line-up as in 2018. The shake-up has created added intrigue as the teams travel to Australia. “There’s nothing like going racing,” says Mark Webber. “It’s amazing how quickly the drivers will settle into their new environments, but prior to Melbourne they have had only a limited amount of testing, so the first race of the year will answer a lot of questions. Melbourne is one of the best Grands Prix of the year; the city comes to life. It is very significant for the event that Rolex has been involved for so long, united by their world-class approach and attention to detail. For me personally, and for all Australians, it makes the event extra special that such an incredible brand like Rolex is so closely associated.”

ROLEX AND MOTORSPORT

Rolex’s close ties with motor port date back to Sir Malcolm Campbell’s World Land Speed Record successes in the 1930s, when he became the first driver to break the 300mph barrier (483km/h) at the wheel of his car Bluebird. Since then, Rolex’s presence in motor racing has grown steadily, supporting iconic endurance events such as the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the FIA World Endurance Championship. In 2013, Rolex partnered the pinnacle of motor sport, Formula 1®, having supported Rolex Testimonee Sir Jackie Stewart since 1968. The brand also has a global appreciation for classic car events steeped in elegance, beauty and tradition, including the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, the goo and the Goodwood Revival.

Super Bowl LIII: Patriots vs Rams

In Wake of NFL Post-Season Controversies Public Wants Rule Changes for Pass Interference and OT

Nation also ‘tired’ of seeing Patriots in Super Bowl; thinks legalized gambling can lead to scandal

By an overwhelming margin, the public wants instant replay for judgment calls such as pass interference, according to a Seton Hall Sports Poll conducted this week.

Asked if replay review should be allowed for judgment calls like pass interference, 82% said yes, with only 10% saying no and the rest having no opinion or saying they did not know.

Among those who said they followed the sport closely, even more, 89%, said yes, while only 7% said no.

Even among the respondents who said they follow the NFL very closely, 85% said yes, they “think instant replay review should be allowed for judgment calls like pass interference.” Among that group of very close followers, however, 13% said “no.”

Regarding overtime possession rules, a majority of respondents polled said that each team should get at least one possession in overtime: 58% said that both teams should have the ball, with only 33% saying the rule (a touchdown on first possession ends the game), should be left alone.

The poll received 985 adult responses across the country, using both landlines and cellphones, with a margin of error of +/- 3.2%.

“In the NFL’s championship games, referee calls and non-calls made a very big difference,” noted Rick Gentile, director of the poll, which is sponsored by the Sharkey Institute of the Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall. “And in some ways, Kansas City’s offense never getting a chance to take the field in overtime was anticlimactic – never a good thing in the entertainment business, and something the NFL may want to pay attention to along with the overwhelming support for instant replay review for judgment calls such as pass interference.”

Nation ‘Tired’ of Patriots

Perhaps the overtime rules wouldn’t have seemed so unfair if the Kansas City Chiefs hadn’t been playing the New England Patriots, who have made their way to the Super Bowl four out of the past five years.

Nearly half of Americans say they are tired of seeing the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

46% said they were tired of seeing them, with only 25% saying their appearance would make the game more interesting.

Among those who follow the NFL closely or very closely, the number rose to 62% who are tired of seeing them against only 27% who thought their appearance would make the game more interesting.

Tom Brady

The numbers are not very good for New England quarterback Tom Brady either, whose favorable rating has fallen to only 29% after a high of 61% in February 2015, when the Poll first asked about him. That was before the penalty for “Deflategate” was instituted, and his favorable rating fell to 34% by that October.

Brady’s favorable rating was only 24% among women and 35% among men. While the overall rating is 29% favorable to 23% unfavorable, among those that follow the NFL closely it is even.

Bill Belichick

Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick had only a 20% favorable rating in this poll, about even with his standing in October of 2015 in the wake of “Deflategate.”

“Despite his brilliance on the field, it appears the effects of ‘Deflategate’ and the suggestion that Brady was a cheater may linger for the remainder of his career,” noted Director Gentile, “As for ‘Patriots Fatigue’ it will be interesting to see how it effects the ratings.”

Legal Sports Betting

Meanwhile, as legalized sports betting begins a growth period on a state-by-state basis, Americans had a strong feeling that it will inevitably lead to scandal. Asked if they believe legal betting can lead to cheating or fixing of games by players, 81% said yes, and 79% said it can lead to cheating or fixing of games by referees or umpires.

What is music to a network ear however, is that 71% say they would be more likely to watch a broadcast of a game on which they bet. Even better news is by more than 5 to 1, people 18-29 are more inclined to watch a game they bet on. This is similar with Seton Hall Sports Poll’s finding when the question was first asked last fall.

Welterweight World Championship: Pacquiao vs. Broner

Power, speed and a clash of styles will be on display this month when two of boxing’s biggest stars go toe-to-toe for the welterweight world championship. Ending his two-year hiatus from a U.S. boxing ring, boxing’s only eight-division world champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao returns to defend his WBA welterweight title against former four-division world champion and must-see attraction Adrien “The Problem” Broner.  Broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Pacquiao vs. Broner,” and its co-featured fights, will be shown on big screens across the nation.

Tickets for “Pacquiao vs. Broner” can be purchased online at www.FathomEvents.com or at participating theater box offices now.

The live broadcast of “Pacquiao vs. Broner” presented by Fathom Events and SHOWTIME PPV, is set for Saturday, January 19 beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 8:00 p.m. CT / 7:00 p.m. MT / 6:00 p.m. PT / 5:00 p.m. AK / 4:00 p.m. HI. A complete list of theater locations is available on the Fathom Events website (theaters and participants are subject to change).

Pacquiao, 40, is coming off a vintage performance in Malaysia in July where he stopped Argentine slugger and world champion Lucas Matthysse inside seven rounds to regain the welterweight title for a fourth time. Broner, one of the most talented fighters in boxing, is aiming for his second stint as 147-pound champion. If victorious, Broner also will add a career-defining win against a first-ballot Hall of Famer to his already stellar resume.

A three-time Fighter of the Year and the Boxing Writers Association of America’s reigning Fighter of the Decade, Pacquiao (60-7-2, 39 KOs), who hails from Sarangani Province in the Philippines, is the only sitting Congressman and Senator to win a world title. Pacquiao’s boxing resume features victories over at least seven current and future Hall of Famers, including Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Cincinnati’s Broner (33-3-1, 24 KOs) is a former four-division world title holder and one of boxing’s most popular and colorful personalities. The brash and outspoken 29-year-old has faced some of boxing’s best en route to winning titles at 130, 135, 140 and 147 pounds, including Mikey Garcia, Paulie Malignaggi and Shawn Porter. Broner, who will face his 10th world champion in Pacquiao, scored a draw in his last fight in April on SHOWTIME against former two-division world champion Jessie Vargas.

“Boxing fans have been eagerly awaiting Pacquiao’s return to a U.S. boxing ring and we are proud to partner with SHOWTIME PPV, to bring it to local cinemas,” said Ray Nutt, Fathom Events CEO. “Fight fans won’t want to miss this match-up of two of boxing’s biggest stars – live and larger-than-life on the big screen.”

JAGUAR I-PACE eTROPHY

Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY Completes Final Pre-Season Test

Up to 20 I-PACE eTROPHY racecars will take to the grid at the first race on 15 December in Ad Diriyah, Saudi Arabia

Pre-season testing for the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY championship took place this week at Rockingham, Europe’s fastest racing circuit. Previously announced entrants Katherine Legge, Bryan Sellers, Cacá Bueno, Sérgio Jimenez and Simon Evans were joined by confirmed multi-car entrants from Saudi Arabia, China and Germany, who are due to announce their team and driver details in November.

British model and racing enthusiast David Gandy also attended the test and drove the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY racecar. Each round will feature a VIP car driven by famous faces from the world of motorsport and beyond.

David Gandy said:

“This is a hugely impressive car. I was initially sceptical about electric cars, but now after driving the I-PACE and the I-PACE eTROPHY I’m a convert. The racecar is so powerful but it’s a friendly car to drive – it’s a lot of fun and holding your speed around the corners is a test of nerve. I’m already a Formula E fan but adding the element of production car racing will add something special. I’ll definitely be watching.”

Gandy, who first attended a Formula E Race in Hong Kong in 2016 has also previously raced for Jaguar in the Mille Miglia in an XK120.

The Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY series will be the official support race to ABB FIA Formula E from December onwards. The new championship will take place over 10 rounds in nine global cities, with up to 20 entrants competing for a prize fund in excess of £500,000.

The Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY begins on 15 December in Ad Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. Final entrants and details of where to watch the championship around the world will be announced shortly.

BLAKE ANDERSON GIFTS GSW

The bottles of $130 whisky come enclosed in a velvet, blue bag that were embroidered to reflect the team’s achievement.

The team received the bottles from Anderson this week, and he had the following to say about their accomplishment:

MotoGP champ Márquez

Spaniard let loose behind the wheel in Formula 1 machinery at Red Bull Ring.

Marc Márquez has already beaten all and sundry on two wheels but today switched to four wheels and a Formula 1car for a new speed experience on the track.

The four-time MotoGP champion, who leads this year’s championship after six rounds, took to the wheel of a Scuderia Toro Rosso F1 car for a few laps of the Red Bull Ring. Here is all you need to know.

  • Marquez was given the opportunity to switch from his Repsol Honda bike to an STR F1 car.
  • The Spaniard drove for a few hours at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix there later this season.
  • He first underwent a series of laps in the simulator before getting onto the track for the test run.
  • Hooked after just a few laps, he said: “It was always my dream to race the quickest cars in the world. I had great respect for it ahead of today, and I didn’t sleep well. In the end it was an unbelievable experience, and an absolute highlight of my career. There is a massive difference to MotoGP. The limited visibility was a great challenge, in particular, to begin with. You feel a lot more constricted in the cockpit. The braking distances and timing in turns is completely different. A Formula 1 car has much more downforce, of course, which made for a lot of fun in the part of the circuit with the most turns, in particular.”
  • And does he see a career in four-wheel racing in the future? Marquez said: “My complete focus in the coming years will remain on MotoGP. I’m part of a fantastic team, and I feel fully motivated. Who knows though, maybe Formula 1 will be a serious idea for me in a few years’ time!”
  • The 25-year-old had a litany of F1 big hitters to put him through his paces with the likes of three-time world champion Niki Lauda, eight-time grand prix winner Mark Webber and Red Bull motorsport boss Helmut Markowatching from the stands.
  • Webber said: “He was really quiet still at breakfast. As soon as he got into the cockpit, he was 100 per cent focused and delivered a top performance on the race track. Formula 1 and MotoGP are two completely different things. Marc made my job as an instructor very easy though. He always asked the right questions and improved lap by lap.”
  • Marko said: “To put that kind of performance in within such a short time says everything about his huge talent. In the coming years he is going to break a lot more records in MotoGP. Maybe after that, Formula 1 will actually be a possibility. Up to now only a few exceptional talents, such as John Surtees, have managed to compete in both racing series. Marc also has what it takes. Today definitely wasn’t the last time he will sit in a Formula 1 car.”
  • Already Marquez is sixth on the list of all-time grand prix motorcycle race wins with a tally of 64 from 125cc up to MotoGP itself.
  • He currently leads the 2018 standings with three wins from the first six races.
  • Other MotoGP rivals have taken to an F1 car in the past, notably Valentino Rossi with Ferrari and Jorge Lorenzo for Mercedes, while Fernando Alonso made the switch in the other direction to test Marquez’s 2015 bike.

OLYMPICS x LIVE STREAM

The Winter Olympics in South Korea may be 14 time zones removed from the Eastern Time Zone of the US — but 43% of Americans say they plan to watch NBC’s live streaming content during the Games, with only 48% saying they did not have such plans.

A big chunk of the country — 63% — say they will watch at least some coverage of the Games, which begin Friday, February 8.  That is double those who said “no” (31%) to watching any coverage.

“That is a healthy number of people turning to devices other than television,” noted Rick Gentile, director of the poll, which is sponsored by the Sharkey Institute.   “You might call this the breakthrough year for streaming coverage making a big impact.”
