Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival

Birders descend on Morro Bay each year over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend to attend the Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival and capture glimpses of the massive migrating madness as they dive, swoop and scatter by the hundreds. This is Insta-worthy at its finest. But, you don’t have to attend the festival to marvel at these fine feathered friends because Morro Bay is a distinctive coastal destination for birds migrating along the Pacific Flyway through March.

The coastal Mediterranean climate sets the stage and creates the perfect backdrop for bird watching, no matter where you roam: the Morro Bay State Park boardwalk, bustling Embarcadero, iconic Morro Rock, or up close and personal from kayaks, paddleboards and boat tours. The Morro Bay National Estuary Preserve and its unique 800-acre wetland filled with salt marshes and mudflats are home to more than 250 species of land, sea, and shore birds as well as dozens of endangered species all winter long, including Peregrine Falcons.

Author of the book The Peregrine Falcons of Morro Rock: A 50-year History, he is past president of Morro Coast Audubon Society. In its 25th year, the Mind Walk Series offers lecture on topics of interest to residents of the Central Coast, including cultural history, natural history, and current issues every Monday, January-March.

DURBAN × SARDINE RUN

DIVE INTO DURBAN DURING THE SARDINE RUN

Mother Nature provides a spectacular experience for adventure seekers on land and sea

It’s time to start planning for one of the ocean’s most captivating phenomena. In May – July each year, nature enthusiasts around the world anticipate the annual Sardine Run which takes place off the shores of Durban and the beaches to its south. When conditions are right, millions of silvery sardines make their way up South Africa’s eastern coast chasing cold currents.

Visible even by satellite, the mass migration can form up to nine miles in length and is followed by large numbers of predators that provide the main attraction for divers, snorkelers, and those viewing by boat.Thousands of dolphins are largely responsible for rounding up the sardines into densely packed masses of fish known as bait balls that can be up to 65 feet in diameter. Once a bait ball has been formed, sharks, game fish, birds, and the occasional whale take advantage of the opportunity to get in on the action – which is the most desirable time for divers and snorkelers to experience true underwater theater.

Those with their feet planted firmly on solid ground will not miss out on the excitement, as the feeding frenzy can be viewed from the shore as well. Swarms of Cape gannets and cormorants dive bomb the ocean while other hungry sea creatures breach the surface. As an added bonus, ragged tooth sharks congregate to mate during this period, while humpback whales and southern right whales also migrate during this time of year. Curious spectators can join the crowds on Durban’s beaches to watch commercial fisherman haul sardine-filled nets onto the sand while locals bargain to buy the fish as they are sold by the basket. Anglers also closely monitor the Sardine Run as excellent game fishing takes place during this time from local beaches and rocks. For a birds-eye view, sightseeing airplanes and helicopters are a great way to view the run from above.

Poseidon Expeditions

Poseidon Expeditions for 2019-2020 Adds

New Cruises off Scotland’s Coast,

More Arctic and Antarctic Departures

Book by Nov. 1, 2018, Receive Discounts of up to 15 Percent on Most Itineraries

Poseidon Expeditions, the go-to company for Arctic and Antarctic cruises, has a jump on the 2019 and 2020 seasons with new destinations, additional departures of favorite journeys and if booked by Nov. 1, 2018, discounts of up to 15 percent on most itineraries.

The company maintains two vessels, the 114-guest Sea Spirit, recently fully refurbished, and the 128-guest 50 Years of Victory, purpose-built as an ice breaker for expedition cruising. Both are in northern climes in the North American summer; Sea Spirit moves south in the winter for explorations of the Southern Ocean and Antarctica.

New 2019 Sea Spirit Itineraries

A brand-new itinerary launching for 12 days June 3-14, 2019, is From Scotland Highlands to Arctic Glaciers.  Guests depart on Sea Spirit from Leith (Edinburgh), Scotland, and cruise to Norway’s Longyearbyen (Spitsbergen), tracking routes of Vikings who invaded Scotland’s (among other) coastlines in search of arable land – and gold. Guests visit:

• Skara Brae, a 5,000-year-old village and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Orkney Islands

• a birder’s paradise (over 345 species recorded) on Fair Isle (think sweaters) in the Shetland Islands

• Denmark’s Faroe Islands (think salmon) that National Geographic Traveler has designated as “Authentic, unspoiled and likely to remain so”

• Norway’s stunning and wild Jan Mayen

• and the High Arctic wilderness of Svalbard, with ghosts of whaling camps and trappers’ cabins and very present polar bears, reindeer, walrus, whale and more, all frisky in Nature’s 24-hour days.

The per person double rate is from $5,396 in a Main Deck Suite, after the discount.

A second brand-new Sea Spirit itinerary, a 12-day May 21-June 3, 2019, Best of the British Isles cruise (web link and more details to come), is also a new direction for Poseidon Expeditions because this adventure has nothing to do with either the Arctic or Antarctica. This trip begins in Plymouth, UK, and proceeds along the magical Scottish coast among legendary islands of both Scotland and Ireland, ending in Leith (Edinburgh), Scotland. Many stops will introduce designated birding – including puffin — habitats. Like all of its journeys, an expedition team that specializes in exploration of the natural world will be aboard to curate the adventure for guests. Also figuring into this journey:

• the high cliffs of Scotland’s St. Kilda (think sea bird eggs harvested for human fodder)

• the basalt columns of Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway

• castles and monasteries (including Iona Abbey)

• Waterford (crystal)

• Snowdonia National Park and a 13th century castle in Wales

• Shetland ponies

• a Highland distillery

The per person double rate is from $5,795.

Expanded Sea Spirit Departures in 2019

Poseidon Expeditions has added a second departure of East Greenland

Under the Dome of Northern Lights. This 11-day trip departures in 2019 Sept. 6-16 and Sept. 15-25. This cruise – round trip from Reykjavik – has sold out for four consecutive seasons.  The per person double rate inclusive of an early booking discount is from $7,556.

There will also be two departures of the unique Franz Josef Land Archipelago – Russian High Arctic cruise, a 14-day program exploring the Russian High Arctic that is not available through any other expedition ship operator. Departures in 2019 are Aug. 1-14 and Aug. 13-26. The per person double rate inclusive of an early booking discount is from $12,056.

Sea Spirit in Antarctica 2019-2020

For the 2019-20 Antarctic season, Poseidon Expeditions again offers a variety of classic Antarctic Peninsula programs as well as three longer Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands voyages, all utilizing Sea Spirit. The season begins with the 23-day Falklands, South Georgia & Antarctic Islands“Antarctica Awakening” program Oct. 20-Nov.11, 2019, embarking in Montevideo, Uruguay, and ending in Ushuaia, Argentina. The final voyage of the season, also 23 days, includes the same Southern Ocean destinations, February 25-March 18, 20 embarking in Ushuaia and disembarking in Montevideo. Please see: https://poseidonexpeditions.com/antarctica/ for itinerary and information on early booking offers.

Sea Spirit guests enjoy the freshness of a brand-new $1 million refurbishment of all 55 guest suites (square footages up to 463) and public areas. Activities directed by a team of experienced polar guides and educators include Zodiac excursions, hiking and optional kayaking and camping, along with informative presentations aboard. The ship’s expedition staff-to-passenger ratio of 1:9 is one of the best in the business.

50 Years of Victory and 2019 at the North Pole

Poseidon Expeditions will offer three prime season departures in 2019 – July 7, July 18 and July 29 – of its signature Expedition to the Top of the World, a 13-day voyage to the North Pole aboard the nuclear-powered 50 Years of Victory. The gateway is Murmansk, Russia. The voyage north includes sightseeing helicopter flights across a frozen land and seascape. After celebrations at the North Pole, on the south-bound voyage Poseidon Expeditions brings passengers through Franz Josef Land, an archipelago of 191 uninhabited, volcanic, mostly glaciated islands (part of the Russian Arctic National Park). The per person double rate inclusive of an early booking discount is from $28,495.

Powered by two nuclear reactors generating 75,000 horsepower and capable of crushing a clear path through multi-year ice up to three meters (10 feet) thick, 50 Years of Victory is the largest and most powerful icebreaker ever built. This 525-foot working vessel offers comfortable accommodations, all with exterior views and en suite facilities; a dining room; aft salon for lectures, presentations and socializing; a bow-facing bar and lounge; library; a gym, two saunas and swimming pool with heated seawater. The ship is equipped with a modern clinic and physician.

Cruising in Alaska

AdventureSmith Announces What’s New In Small Ship Cruising in Alaska for 2018- Including the Longest Season and Most Capacity Ever

There’s a lot of exciting news coming out of Alaska for the upcoming 2018 small ship cruise season. The experts at AdventureSmith Explorations have just announced the following. The 2018 expedition cruise season in Alaska will begin earlier than ever, an increased number of vessels will now be navigating Alaskan waters, there will be increased opportunities for exploring Glacier Bay National Park and more multi-sport options for active cruise adventures will be offered.

“Instead of waiting until Memorial Day to enjoy the experience of a small ship adventure in Alaska, guests will be excited to learn that they can sail as early as mid-April of 2018. This longer season adds a full month to take advantage of traditional early season savings,” noted Todd Smith, Founder/President of AdventureSmith Explorations.

Longer Season & Savings

Historically small expedition vessels begin plying cruise routes in Alaska in mid-May; however next year the first Alaska sailing of the season is set for April 14, 2018, aboard Wilderness Adventurer’s new Glacier Bay National Park Adventure Cruise route. (Note: for real early birds, some positioning cruises from Seattle will sail as early as April 7, 2018.) A major benefit of cruising in April will be opportunities to see more wildlife. Sightings usually differ from spring into summer as do cruise rates. In the spring, moose, wolves and bears with cubs are active along with these 2018 savings:

  • Select April and May cruises aboard the Wilderness & Safari small ship fleet are $400 off per couple when booked by Dec. 15, 2017.
  • Select May sailings of Exploring Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness offer free airfare when booked by Dec. 30, 2017.
  • Select April and May Treasures of the Inside Passage departures sailing from Seattle to Alaska offer free one-way airfare when booked by Dec 31, 2017.
  • Select May and June land-based trips on the Kenai Peninsula and/or exploring Denali National Park offer a per person savings of up to $650.

Expanded Small Ship Inventory

Helping to expand the overall Alaska small ship passenger capacity is the returning 88-guest S.S. Legacy, a replica turn-of-the-century coastal steamer which features a dance floor, full bar and a new complement of adventure equipment for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. There will also be more charter options with the addition of the 8-guest Golden Eagle and its Golden Eagle Custom Alaska Cruise to the Alaska Charters inventory. These small ships join the popular 100-guest National Geographic Quest whose inaugural 2017 Alaska voyages sold out. Her sister ship, the 100-guest National Geographic Venture, is under construction and currently scheduled to sail Alaskan waters in 2018. AdventureSmith Explorations will release further news on the Venture as her cabins become available for booking.

More Ways to Explore Glacier Bay

New Glacier Bay National Park permit allocations opened the door for AdventureSmith Explorations and its partners to create for 2018 more itineraries exploring the park.

  • The new 8-day Glacier Bay National Park Adventure Cruise aboard the 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer spends three days exploring the park.
  • A new 15-day Alaska’s Inside Passage & San Juans Cruise between Seattle and Juneau (northbound in spring, southbound in fall) allocates one full day inside Glacier Bay. The selection of small ships for this cruise ranges from 36 to 88 guests.
  • The 8-guest Westward spends four days in the park on a special 10-day alternative itinerary round-trip from Juneau on May 19, 2018.
  • A new 11-day Alaska’s Frontier & Wilderness Quest itinerary aboard the 74-guest Chichagof Dream on June 3 and June 13, 2018, extends the classic Glacier Bay & Island Adventure journey to include two days in Glacier Bay and includes excursions north up the Lynn Canal to Skagway and down the Inside Passage south to Wrangell.
  • A new 18-day Great National Parks of Alaska journey by sea and land explores Glacier Bay, Kenai Fjords and Denali national parks via the 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer and wilderness lodges. The first of the 13 departures is set for May 26, 2018, and the season’s final is Aug. 18, 2018.

More Multisport Options

Small ships have always been base camps for adventure, but AdventureSmith Explorations is reporting even more adventure options on board, and ashore, for the coming 2018 cruise season. A new 8-day Whales, Wildlife & Glaciers itinerary aboard the 84-guest Safari Endeavour or the 88-guest replica steamer S.S. Legacy includes river rafting and biking in Haines. The S.S. Legacy has been newly outfitted with kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and skiffs. A new 9-day Alaska Yacht: Bears, Bergs & Bushwhacking aboard the 22-guest Safari Quest offers guests the included activities of flightseeing or charter fishing in Petersburg before they embark the ship.
