Memphis × West Tennessee

By Shelby Barbour × Vaughn Lowery

The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development held the Memphis and West Tennessee Media tour March 19th-23rd. This trip was filled with amazing food, noteworthy experiences and monumental moments.

Tuesday, March 19, 2019 journalists arrived bright and early at the Memphis International Airport and were met by Geiger & Associate staff, and were shortly off to lunch. Lunch was held at The Beauty Shop, which is a hip spot located at the center of the Cooper-Young Entertainment District. The name of the restaurant is the theme. 1940’s beauty dryers are scattered around the salon. Along with this old-fashioned décor, the trendy restaurant also serves amazing, American cuisine. Grilled peaches with blue cheese and balsamic vinegar, herb-crusted trout, cheese grits, and succotash are just a few of the delicious bites they have. After breakfast, the groups split for afternoon activities. The journalists were able to choose between three different activities.

First day activities include taking a tour of Graceland – Home of Elvis Presley, visiting Cooper-Young Entertainment District and Overton Square, and taking a tour of the Memphis Botanic Garden.

Dinner was held at Blues City Café, located on Beale Street. Their ribs have been featured on many food channels and in Bon Appetit’s barbeque issue. Then after, having the options to go out for the night.

The following days were very similar to this one. Starting the day with a delicious breakfast, then continuing to do some fun activity. A lot of the activities include touring Memphis’ popular attractions like The Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum, the Blues Hall of Fame, Shelby Farms Park, the National Civil Rights Museum, and the Peabody Hotel; just to name a few.

Beale street is known for its music, and soul so it’s no doubt that was a must-see on this trip.

This trip was full of opportunity. Tennessee has so much culture, soul, and influence that it’s a no brainer why people fall in love with it. Although the trip mainly focused on food and sight-seeing, some history was thrown in there as well. Tours of the National Civil Rights Museum were given. The museum was established in 1991 and is located at the former Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. This museum offered the visitors a full immersion experience through the American civil rights movement.

When exploring Tennessee, it’s hard to not eat everything that comes into view. Luckily on this trip, it offered multiple foods. This trip was all about the food and travel destinations, so without a doubt, there was going to be some great food options. Food varied from fried chicken sandwiches to impossible burgers which are made from plant-based meats and even deep-fried oysters.

What’s a good trip, without good alcohol? Wine tasting, beer tasting, any alcohol tasting you can think of, Tennessee has it. Century Farm Winery is a family-owned and operated winery that is located right on a working farm. Journalists were able to tour the winery and enjoy a selection of handcrafted and award-winning wines. The wine wasn’t the only alcohol being tasted, good olé’ moonshine was available for taste as well. Samuel T. Bryant Distillery was a hot stop on this tour as well. Just like with the Winery, the journalist was able to have a tasting and tour at the Distillery. Samuel T Bryant Distillery tries its hardest to use locally grown produce in their products. The berries in the Blueberry Moonshine and the Blackberry Moonshine come from local farms and the corn they use comes from Madison County farms. They even use local Sorghum Molasses to make a very unique rum product.

The Memphis and West Tennessee Media Tour was filled with so much culture, inspiration, passion, and warmth. Journalists were able to put their creative skills to the test; write and visit places they’ve never been before. When traveling it’s important to try new things and always think outside the box. New foods, drinks, experiences, and great times are what make a trip unforgettable.

Memphis is definitely a place that needs to be on everyone’s travel list. It’s full of so much culture, experiences and food. Memphis is the definition of an affordable visit, foodie town with tons of music history.

Lemonade

Splish splash.. pour me some of that lemonade. Legendary guitar monster Bobby Messano serves up a mighty tasty solution to your summer blues in his new music video, “Lemonade” as he jams and croons over a summery groove.  The song is all about making lemonade out of life’s lemons and is from his 9th solo CD…LEMONADE.. just out! This most-cool video, produced and directed by celebrated concert photographer/videographer Jim Mimna (Infamous Stringdusters, Tom Morello, Deanna Bogart), was filmed at Dockside Studio in Maurice, Louisiana, and at the fabulous Denver, Colorado Warwick Hotel. It perfectly captures the wry humor of the song, alternating between live studio footage of kick-ass musicians: (piano wizard Bob Malone (Fogerty), drummer Doug Belote (Clapton) and Carl Dufrene Jr (North Mississippi Allstars) and refreshingly playful poolside moments.  Drink in. Drink up!

Why Knoxville Rocks

360 Magazine Culture Editor, Tom Wilmer explores Knoxville—the third largest city in Tennessee.

When people think of Tennessee, Nashville and Memphis get the prime spotlight, and they most often make the top of the to-do list for travelers. But Knoxville has an abundance of attractions that are alluringly unique.

Knoxville’s first iteration as a world-class travel destination happened with a bang when the town hosted the 1982 Knoxville World’s Fair. Today the two remaining iconic vestiges are the Sunsphere tower, and a stunningly beautiful riverside performance amphitheater.

Knoxville is graced with historic architecture, both in the urban core, and surrounding residential neighborhoods, but its the friendliness of the people is an essential ingredient that makes the town so attractive.

Most of the businesses are locally owned. There’s been a recent explosion of new upscale eateries (more than 80 in the urban core) and trendy brew pubs that keep the downtown core hopping in to the wee hours of the night. Festivals like the annual Rhythm and Blooms Blues Festival in May is just a sampler of the live events that take place downtown throughout the year.

Outdoor hiking, biking and kayaking are viral endeavors for locals and visitors alike. Knoxville rightfully touts its super popular Urban Wilderness with more than 1,000 unspoiled acres right in the heart of the city.

CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO THE NPR One/KCBX PODCAST INTERVIEW with Angie Wilson at Visit Knoxville to hear the backstory on just why this vibrant town bustles with new, locally-owned businesses.

Carol Evans shares insights about the city’s Urban Wilderness adventures for hikers, bikers. and kayakers. Sam Carlton at the four-star The TENNESSEAN Hotel talks about the Knoxville World’s Fair back in 1982, and how the momentum instilled by the fair continues today.

Tom Bugg, general manager at the city’s two historic theaters—the Tennessee and the Bijou Theatre—paints a vivid picture of Knoxville’s past and present, and how the renovation of the theaters served as an economic stimulus for other downtown revitalization projects.

David Butler, executive director at the Knoxville Museum of Art talks about community engagement through showcasing regional art, educational outreach and gratis admission.

Madison Ryann Ward Shares Video For “Mirror”

Today, rising vocalist and songwriter Madison Ryann Ward shares the video for her debut single “Mirror”—watch and share HERERefinery29 praises the video saying, “The powerful visuals of the music video match Ward’s soulful, smooth vocals.”

“Mirror” was released earlier this spring after Ward was featured recording the track with producer Rick Rubin in his Malibu studio on Jay-Z’s episode of the hit Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman. When Letterman asks Ward about her objective in making music, she replies, “Just to be honest. And to move people in a way that they’ve never been moved before.”

Inspired by artists from many different genres, Madison Ryann Ward combines bluesy, soulful melodies with folk, rap and gospel influenced lyricism to create a classic sound that remains all her own. Having grown up in a creative family in Oklahoma, Ward was exposed to music at a young age, which would come to inform her distinct style. Gospel hymnal songs were her first experience with music as she listened to her mother play piano in the church choir until age eight. When she was twelve, her father opened a BBQ and blues joint where she spent her teenage summers waiting tables while the likes of Billie Holiday, Etta James and Bessie Smith bumped through the restaurant speakers.

However, music was not always the path Ward had in mind. Having played sports all her life, excelling in volleyball, basketball, golf and track, she decided to play collegiate volleyball at Oklahoma University and planned to play professionally overseas after graduation. But when a group of athletes heard her singing Aretha Franklin’s “Chain Of Fools” in the cafeteria and posted a clip on Twitter, the video went viral after being picked up by WorldStarHipHop. The response Ward received prompted her to consider a shift towards making music professionally. Ward took songwriting trips to Nashville, eventually moving there for a year before splitting her time between the studio in New York and Los Angeles, where she signed with management followed by a label deal with legendary producer Rick Rubin. “Mirror” sets the stage for more new music from Madison Ryann Ward in 2018.

NYC-Based Band “All Types of Kinds”

Mixing A Unique Blend of Influences From Rock to Blues, Folk, and Hip-Hop – The Bands Unique Multi-Genre Approach Lends A New Perspective to Alternative Music

In a city often oversaturated with musicians of every genre constantly performing and creating, it takes a special group of artists to truly stand out amongst the crowd that produce a truly unique sound, and New York City’s All Types of Kinds truly live up to the namesake.

All Types of Kinds (or ATOK) plays a wide variety of music ranging from rock to pop, folk, punk, funk, hip-hop, blues, jazz, and country – even sometimes all at once. The members come from diverse backgrounds that make for an amalgamation of musical textures and vibes. Their EP, “Love Songs (Or Songs For Your Ex)” debuted on Valentine’s Day 2018 and they are currently gearing for dates all over the country.

The band consist of Ray Rubio (Guitar), Billy Conahan (Guitar), Berk 0 (Percussion), and Rocco Stroker (Guitar) – all of whom have unique musical backgrounds. Ray, 20, a multi genre artist and singer/songwriter, hails from Harlem NY and has also been on stage from young age, mainly theater productions. Ray attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2014, and since then has been performing his music in the New York Metro Area and Richmond, Virginia. Billy, 25, is a queens native whose been on the stage since his early teens as a stand-up comedian, singer/songwriter folk artist playing his own folk tunes as well as cover tunes. Berk O, singer and percussionist, is from Brooklyn and also contributes to the band’s songwriting process, while Rocco is the newest member of the band – playing bass, guitar and as an incredible vocalist. He hails from New Fairfield, Connecticut.

WATCH: All Types of Kinds – Colorblind (Official Music Video)

With the goal of becoming a full-time, self-sufficient, self-produced band, able to tour and create their own audio and video products on a regular basis, they plan to soon follow up their debut with a sophomore effort in late 2018. Unlike other bands who strive for major-label greatness, ATOK shys away from fitting into an industry mold, and often scoff at the idea of being referred to as a ‘boy band’.

Believers in finding a way to share their music while remaining firmly in the driver’s seat, they continue to write, practice, and enjoy playing their music for any crowd that will have them. Making friends from all over the world by busking on the NYC streets has even allowed them to meet and collaborate with like-minded musicians.

These recent “Your Big Break” contest winners who’ve been praised for their “polished precision, sweet harmony, musicianship, artistry, versatility and originality in their smart lyrics” are ready for the big time. That time is now.

BMI STAGE SCHEDULE – SATURDAY, AUGUST 4th

GRACE WEBER | 1:00-1:40pm

“A talented artist who knows how to move you and your body with soulful grooves and real AF lyrics.” – Okayplayer

GRAMMY Award-winner Grace Weber is a star on the rise. An accomplished singer/songwriter, Weber collaborated with Chance the Rapper and Kanye West, co-writing and singing on “All We Got,” the opening track of Chance’s GRAMMY-winning Coloring Book. Her singles, “More Than Friends” and “Elated,” shot to the top of Spotify’s charts, and her performance at SXSW was compared to a “religious experience” byNylon. Beyond her flourishing success, Weber is the cofounder of The Music Lab, Inc, a non-profit organization that provides free music education, career preparation and performance programs to high-school students in her hometown of Milwaukee.

DAVIE | 2:10 – 2:50pm

“There are many types of musicians; some look good, some move good, some are great songwriters, some are great singers. DAVIE is all of these. He has a sound that fits next to the biggest names in contemporary R&B and that can hang comfortably with the giants of the genre’s past, all the way back to his hero, James Brown.” – Ticketmaster Insider

Inspired by the passion of vintage soul and the emotional uplift of gospel, New Jersey native DAVIE cut his musical teeth singing in churches in a traveling gospel band. His vocal prowess led him to Los Angeles, where he found work singing back-up for artists like Chris Brown, Cee-Lo Green and Childish Gambino. But it wasn’t until he went back to the churches of his youth that he found the key to unlock his own path. His debut EP, Black Gospel Vol.1, is filled with both Davie’s fiery spiritual passion and the celebratory energy of contemporary R&B, making the euphoria his songs can generate palpable.

BONES (UK) | 3:20 – 4:00pm

“This is Trent Reznor-level cool. BONES is doing the whole damn thing, middle fingers to the sky and in full control of their work. Rock on.” —NYLON

To hear them explain it, British duo BONES (UK) is “leading the charge of taking rock’n’roll firmly into the 31st century.” Comprised of vocalist Rosie Bones and guitarist Carmen Van Den Berg, the band has already racked up some serious cred to back up their claim. After hearing an early gig by the duo in London’s Camden Town, rock legend Jeff Beck asked Bones and Van Den Berg to collaborate—as both co-writers and players—on his 2016 album Loud Hailer. After gaining a massive following off of singles “Beautiful is Boring” and “Girls Can’t Play Guitar,” it’s easy to see why they have caught the attention and toured with the likes of: Highly Suspect, Band of Skulls, KOOKS, PVRIS, Skunk Anansie and Miyavi.

MELVV | 4:30 – 5:10pm

“[Melvv] has been thrilling listeners with his jazzed-up dance music for years now…continuing to cement his status as a dynamic provocateur.” – Dancing Astronaut

Melvv is the artist project of Milwaukee, WI producer/DJ Jeffrey Melvin. He started producing music at age 12 after being inspired by a video of Daft Punk’s 2007 Paris concert. Melvv is currently signed to Atlantic Records and has a new EP releasing in the fall, which he will be performing at his Lolla Set.

MORGXN | 5:40 – 6:20pm

“Morgxn captivated fans with his infectious pop musicality that’s expertly infused with deeply personal, complex yet relatable lyrics. It’s in this honesty, vulnerability, and authenticity that morgxn’s music resonates and connects with his legion of fans.” -Ones to Watch

morgxn, at age 8, became the youngest member of the Nashville Symphony Choir, and at age 9 penned his fist song “I’ll Always Be There for You.” morgxn decamped from Nashville to Los Angeles, in order to find “space to think, breathe, and be with myself.” While at a party he was asked if he wanted to meet Stevie Nicks, who sagely told the young songwriter, “You have to keep moving. This world will walk all over you if you don’t just keep going.” This advice changed morgxn’s life and his career. His debut album inspired by loss, Vital, is filled with cascading synth-scapes and cool beats, celebrating the emotional complexities of the human condition. His breakout single, “Home,” has earned nearly 7 million Spotify streams, and even inspired a partnership with The Covenant House, a charity for young runaways.

VERA BLUE | 6:50 – 7:30pm

“There are many things we can be grateful to Australia for…but topping the list must be new alt-pop queen Vera Blue, who is undoubtably on the path to world domination.” – Paper Magazine

Vera Blue is an Australian singer/songwriter who started off playing acoustic folk music before adding lush, sultry electronic elements to broaden her sound. The results are sometimes gentle, sometimes ferocious and always show-stopping, with her commanding vocals front and center. After some crucial collabs with artists like Illy and Slumberjack, she released her EP Fingertips in 2016, followed by her debut album Perennial the following year. Response to both her recorded work and live shows have been rapturous.

Lollapalooza was the first festival to bring together artists from a wide range of musical genres on one bill, it was also the first to travel, the first to expand to multiple days, the first to introduce a second stage, the first to blend art and activism, the first to offset its carbon emissions, the first to put electronic dance music artists on the main stage, the first to create family friendly programming, the first to make its home in an urban city center and the first to expand internationally.
Lollapalooza has grown into an annual world-class festival in Chicago (2005), as well as culturally rich countries including Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Germany and France. Lollapalooza is one of the premier destinations both for music fans in the United States and abroad. The festival expanded to four days in 2016 in celebration of 25 years and continues to bring fans four full days of music and over 180 bands on 8 stages. In 2017 Lollapalooza brought in over 245 million dollars in local economic impact and has brought in over 1.2 billion dollars in total locally, since 2010.
Lollapalooza is produced by Perry Farrell, William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, and C3 Presents.

DEVON GILFILLIAN x SUMMER TOUR

Devon Gilfillian will play a mixture of headline shows, festivals and dates with ZZ Ward on his upcoming North American tour. The run kicks off this Saturday, May 5, with a performance at Nashville’s Sevier Park Festival. He will also perform at Forecastle, Floydfest, Xponential and the Tremblant International Blues Festival. Tickets are on sale now. See below for itinerary.
Troublemaker, his first single for Capitol Records, is now available for download/streaming on all digital platforms HERE. The bluesy track, which kicks off with Gilfillian on slide guitar, was heard during 2018 NFL Draft programming and advertising. The young artist was in Texas last week to kick off Round 1 of the draft. Watch him performing the national anthem HERE.
“There’s a lot to like about Gilfillian’s songs, his musical muscle is tempered by his swagger and confidence,” NPR Music said. Growing up outside Philadelphia, he took up the electric guitar at age 14. After moving to Nashville to pursue music full-time, Gilfillian self-released his debut, Travelin’ Blues, a five-song collection of originals that showcased his powerful blend of soul, blues, rock and gospel.
Gilfillian sold out his first-ever headline shows in Philadelphia and Nashville and has supported such artists as Keith Urban, Gladys Knight, Jimmy Vaughn, The Lone Bellow, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors and The Fray. Listen to his performance on NPR; World Cafe Nashville HERE
