VALEO x CES 2019

At CES in Las Vegas for the sixth consecutive year, Valeo is unveiling its latest technological innovations at the epicenter of the revolutions shaping mobility, i.e., the advent of autonomous vehicles, powertrain electrification and digital mobility. These three disruptions transforming the automotive industry are also driving profound change in society.

Valeo develops new technologies to make this transformation a reality. One example that can be seen and tested in the streets of Las Vegas during CES 2019 is Valeo Drive4U®, the Group’s first autonomous car, which is unique in that it can perform all operations using only Valeo sensors that are already series-produced (ultrasound, cameras, lasers, radars and LiDARS) and artificial intelligence. The vehicle is essentially equipped with a full-fledged digital brain that can process the inputs and learn from the scenarios it encounters in the city.

One of the key challenges in autonomous driving is safety. Road accidents are a global epidemic and most often the result of human error. Valeo’s goal is for its systems to significantly reduce accidents, setting the target of less than one major incident for every billion kilometers driven, which would represent a higher level of safety than in the aeronautics industry. To achieve this result, Valeo is presenting two major innovations in Las Vegas: Valeo Drive4U® Remote to operate autonomous vehicles remotely when assistance is required or even vital, and Valeo Voyage XR, which is able to simulate the virtual presence of a person – based in a fixed location – on board the autonomous vehicle during the journey. This means that the car could potentially be controlled externally by somebody who is aware of what is happening within the vehicle. Based on this innovation, Valeo has designed a new form of communication that allows a “stationary” passenger wearing a virtual reality headset to teleport into a moving vehicle.

Also with a view to increasing safety, Valeo will be showcasing Valeo XtraVue Trailer and Valeo PictureBeam Monolithic. The first of these two innovations causes a trailer or caravan to appear invisible in the rearview mirror of the vehicle towing it, making all maneuvers easier and safer for the driver. The second is a high definition lighting system developed in partnership with CREE, the US market leader in the manufacture of LEDs. The solution generates a high definition beam of light on the road without ever blinding other road users and projects information and images onto the pavement.

Lastly, since usage patterns are changing, with digital tools giving access to new ways of getting around, Valeo is developing technologies to promote their widespread take-up. Examples include the Valeo Clean Road app, which generates customized routes to avoid peak pollution areas, and Valeo Oxy’Zen, which can be used to activate air purification systems inside the vehicle cabin.

With these innovations, Valeo is once again demonstrating its capacity to imagine, design and develop technologies conducive to new forms of mobility that are widely accessible yet adapted to individual needs.

2018 Paris Motor Show: Valeo reveals its innovations at the epicenter of the three revolutions shaping the automotive industry

At this year’s Paris Motor Show, Valeo is unveiling its latest technological innovations. These innovations are at the epicenter of the revolutions that are disrupting mobility as we know it: the autonomous vehicle, vehicle electrification and digital mobility.

In particular, Valeo is staging the open-road world début of its Valeo Drive4U® demo car, the first autonomous vehicle to be demonstrated on the streets of Paris itself. The car is equipped exclusively with ultrasonic sensors, cameras, laser scanners and radars already series produced by Valeo, and artificial intelligence, giving it a full-fledged digital brain. The technology is able to manage all the information collected by the sensors and learn from the complex scenarios it encounters in the city.

Valeo Drive4U® can already handle a wide variety of driving situations in urban environments, including undivided roads, intersections, traffic lights, tunnels and even streets with no markings. The car also knows how to deal with cyclists and pedestrians.

At the 2018 Paris Motor Show, Valeo is also presenting its 48V solutions to make electric vehicles much more affordable, as well as the first all-electric urban prototype powered by a 48V Valeo motor. The prototype gives a glimpse of what tomorrow’s affordable urban vehicles could be like, designed to be just the right size for their intended use. It can reach speeds of 100 km/h, has a range of 150 km and does not emit any CO2. Valeo is also unveiling the world’s first 48V plug-in hybrid vehicle.

Lastly, since usage patterns are changing, with digital tools giving access to new ways of getting around, Valeo is developing technologies that promote the rise of intelligent mobility. One example of this is the real-time map of air quality in Paris, a project in partnership with ARIA Technologies. A fleet of some twenty vehicles equipped with Valeo sensors will travel around Paris to measure levels of six pollutants in real time. For Valeo, understanding pollution levels in urban areas is a vitally important step toward creating new, cleaner mobility solutions. By having precise information on air quality in a specific location, it will be possible, for example, to generate customized routes to avoid peaks in pollution, or activate pollution control systems inside cars.

With these innovations, Valeo has once again demonstrated its capacity to imagine, design and develop technologies that are conducive to the development of electric, autonomous, connected cars that are widely affordable yet adaptable to individual needs

Historic Drive by Saudi Woman as Driving Ban Lifts

Saudi woman racer commemorates the reversal of the ban on female drivers with a lap of honour

Female racing driver Aseel Al Hamad celebrated the end of the ban on women drivers with a lap of honour in a Jaguar F-TYPE. Aseel, the first female board member of the Saudi Arabian Motor Federation, had never driven on a track in her home country before.

Aseel said:

“Having loved cars since I was a child, today is highly emotional for me. This is the best driving moment of my life. What better way to kick off World Driving Day than a lap of honour in my home country in a Jaguar F-TYPE – the ultimate car to roar around the track. I hope people around the world will share in our joy today by sharing their most memorable driving story using #worlddrivingday.”

Aseel joined Jaguar in a call for June 24th to be known as World Driving Day – a day when finally, the whole world can enjoy the thrill of being behind the wheel of a car.

On World Driving Day Jaguar invites people to share a memory of their best driving moment (image or anecdote) using the #worlddrivingday.

By creating World Driving Day, Jaguar urges people to remember this historic day and what it means to women, to Saudi Arabia and to world progress in general. As part of its ongoing work with over 40 Universities and Academic institutions globally on future mobility solutions, the company will also be partnering with University in Saudi Arabia to join this global network. The partnership, to be announced later this year, will be a unique exchange to tap into the brightest young minds in Saudi Arabia to shape the company’s future innovations as it moves to ACES (an Autonomous, Connected, Electrified and Shared future).

Airport Snowploughs May Soon Become Autonomous

Snowploughs at airports may soon be autonomous. For the first time, autonomous snowploughs, 20 metres long and 5.5 metres wide, have cleared snow from a runway. This project, which is known as Yeti and uses technology developed by Semcon, aims to increase efficiency and reduce delays at airports.

Clearing snow at airports is absolutely crucial. Takeoff and landing runways must be completely clear of snow if flights are to depart and land on time. At present, airports always need to be prepared and have staff on standby who can clear snow whenever they are needed. Problems with snow also result in many delays and stranded passengers every year.

“Autonomous snowploughs will allow airports all over the world to streamline their activities and reduce delays for their passengers. This is a good example of how autonomous vehicles can increase profitability and add value for people,” says Markus Granlund, CEO at Semcon.

On 19 March, self-driving snowploughs were presented for the first time when they were deployed at Fagernes Airport in Leirin, Norway, 200 kilometres north of Oslo. This project has been developed by Yeti Snow Technology, co-owned by Semcon and Øveraasen, for Norwegian airport operator Avinor. The snowploughs have enough capacity to clear an area of 357,500 square metres an hour. One unique feature of these autonomous vehicles is that they can clear snow in formation, several vehicles working together, and with the same outstanding precision no matter the weather.

Semcon in Norway is contributing its expertise to the project, working with complex real-time systems and autonomous technology.

“We have designed a control system that sets up digital patterns for autonomous snow clearance at airports. The system can then download these patterns and monitor a number of vehicles that navigate using RTK GPS, an accurate form of position measurement, and communicate using 4G modems,” explainsJohn Emil Halden, Semcon project manager.

Hyundai × CES

Hyundai Motor will showcase a trio of new technologies at CES 2018 from January 9-12 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, all focused on connecting future technology with evolving mobility challenges. Hyundai’s next-generation hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicle equipped with new Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) technologies will be featured and its new name revealed.

The new fuel cell EV is the newest edition to the Hyundai’s eco-vehicle portfolio and it will help to fulfill Hyundai’s vision to offer clean mobility to the world. In addition, Hyundai will connect its progress on hydrogen-powered mobility to hydrogen-powered applications in the home via a section of the booth dedicated to the Hydrogen Life Vision.

Rounding out Hyundai’s future technology demonstrations will be a reimagined view from the driver’s perspective inside the Intelligent Personal Cockpit, featuring artificial-intelligence-enhanced voice recognition and vital sign-based wellness care, all from the comfort of the driver’s seat. From 2020 all new Jaguar Land Rover vehicles will be electrified. The company made the announcement at its inaugural Tech Fest, a series of debates and a free public exhibition about the future of mobility.

Dr Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Officer, said: “Every new Jaguar Land Rover model line will be electrified from 2020, giving our customers even more choice. We will introduce a portfolio of electrified products across our model range, embracing fully electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles. Our first fully electric performance SUV, the Jaguar I-PACE, goes on sale next year.”
