Headlining 10th Annual LA Times The Taste

The Los Angeles Times today announced the lineup for The Taste, its annual festival celebrating Southern California’s diverse culinary scene. Hosted by The Times’ acclaimed Food staff, the famous backlot will transform into the ultimate block party for three individual evening events, August 30 through September 1. Admission includes unlimited tastings from the area’s best restaurants, a variety of wine, beer and seasonal cocktails, plus access to cooking demonstrations and talks by renowned chefs.

  • Friday, Aug. 30, 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.
    L.A. Times Food Columnist Lucas Kwan Peterson will cook up a special on-stage presentation of one of his favorite projects for the Food section. Paola Da Re and Giorgia Sinatra (Pasta Sisters) will lead an Italian cooking demonstration with Chiara Soldati (La Scolca) who will lead a wine discussion, presented by Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits. The Times’ Wine Club will launch with a demo by expert Mark Oldman. Take a wine tour through France with Ira Norof (Southern Glazer’s), Erin Landsberg (American Wine & Spirits) and Troy Chappel (Southern Glazer’s). Get a rice wine 101 with a sake demo by Courtney Kaplan (Ototo). The Bar Stage will feature Ira Norof and Wes Hagen (J. Wilkes Wines) talking wine, enlightenment and contentment. Chris Bianco (Tartine Bianco) will show home cooks how to make a relaxed Italian meal with Times Deputy Food Editor Andrea Chang. Tobin Shea (Redbird) will shake up a seasonal mocktail, and the Bar Stage will feature a discussion about women in wine with Ira Norof, Chiara Soldati and Lora Tagliarina (Coastal Pacific Wine & Spirits). The Taste Returns

Los Angeles Times’ annual celebration of the Southern California culinary scene returns with events in L.A. and Costa Mesa. The pop-up block parties will take place at the Paramount Pictures Studios backlot over Labor Day weekend (Friday, Aug. 30 through Sunday, Sept. 1) and The MET over two days in October (Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19).

Hosted by The Times’ Food staff, each edition of The Taste will include three individual events. Unlimited tastings from the region’s best restaurants, a variety of wine, beer and seasonal cocktails, plus access to cooking demonstrations and talks by renowned chefs are included with admission. Coco Nogales Raised in Puerto Escondido, Carlos “Coco” Nogales, is the most recognized big wave surfer in Mexico. A known wave hunter, a place in which fear and risk go hand in hand, Coco has earned the respect of the surf community and has mastered the swell in some of the world’s most iconic surf destinations, like in Teahupo’o, Haiti, where in 2015 he amazed the world with a death-defying ride on a wave approximately 15 meters high.

Diego Cadena Born in Sayulita, Nayarit, this master of shortboard surfing and specialist in spearfishing, Diego has had a successful career, dominating Mexican surfing for over 20 years and being named National Champion on multiple occasions. Diego holds the #2 Latin American Surfer ranking and represents Mexico in Surfing World Cups. 

Jessica Cichra   Jessica is deeply involved in the SUP racing circuit as an athlete. Her love for adventure and travel inspired her to begin instructing abroad, teaching national and international SUP Yoga and Bala Tula clinics, as well as organizing and facilitating international SUP and yoga retreats. 

Kristen Addicks Kristen is a yoga instructor from Marin County where she teaches Hatha Flow at Sukha Yoga, a combination of Vinyasa and Bikram, Power Flow and Gentle/Restorative Yoga. She is also a teacher-trainer at Some Like It Hot Yoga & Boutique and writes a yoga blog for Marin Magazine. Additionally, she runs a Yoga Sutra Study Group that studies the deeper meaning of yoga and leads international yoga adventure retreats.

25th Annual Pie Championships

American Pie Council Names the Nation’s Top Commercial Pie Makers. 25th Annual APC National Pie Championships in Orlando Yields Sweet Results!

With a sea of pies enticing eager judges anticipating their first tasty bites, the sweet smell of success was in the air in Orlando as the best commercial bakers in the nation were named at the 25thAnnual APC National Pie Championships in Orlando. Held April 12 and 13 in Orlando at the Renaissance Orlando SeaWorld Hotel, here amateur, professional and commercial bakers entered their most delicious pies in both sweet and savory flavor categories for bragging rights to be named the nation’s best. In the commercial division, bakeries from across the nation and Canada competed in flavor categories including savory pot pies and sweet flavors ranging from apple, lemon and pumpkin to citrus, fruit and berry, pecan and banana cream to sugar-free and even an open category. The pies were taste-tested by more than 200 judges.First place was awarded for the best commercial pies in each flavor category, with top honors going to Harlan Bakeries, with 19 blue ribbons, closely followed by Weston Foods, with 18 blue ribbons.

Top pies from Harlan Bakeries, Avon, Ind., included “Bursting from Berries,” “Chocolate Maple Sugar Creme,” “Honey Crisp Apple,” “Cheesecake Pecan Brittle” and “Peachy Keen.” Some of the judges favorites from Weston Foods, Brownsburg, Ind., included “I Only Have (Cherry) Pies for You,” “Guittard Chocolate Cherry Pie,” “Strawberry Rhubarb Lattice Pie,” and “Hold the Sugar Pineapple Pie.” In addition to sweet pies, first place ribbons were awarded for three savory pot pies including Southeastern Grocers’ “Traditional Premium Chicken Pot Pie” and “Premium Pizza Pot Pie” and World of Pies’ “Spinach and Feta Pot Pie.”

Fourth Annual Velo & Vines Century Ride Aims to Raise $150,000 for UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation

WHAT:  Community leaders and supporters from across the nation will gather Saturday, June 9, at the Arnot-Roberts Winery in Healdsburg, Calif., for the start of the fourth annual Velo & Vines Century Ride along the rolling hills and valleys of the Alexander, Dry Creek and Russian River.

Brother and sister Leto (age 8) and older sister Nichole (age 9), two recent UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation grant recipients from Hopland, Calif., will announce the start of the race. Accompanied by their family, they will stop at the various rest stops to encourage the riders along the route.

UHCCF provides medical grants that help children gain access to health-related services not covered, or not fully covered, by their parents’ commercial health insurance plans. Since 2007, UHCCF has awarded more than 15,000 grants valued at over $40 million to children and their families across the United States. In California, children and families have been awarded over 300 grants totaling more than $760,000 since 2013.

UHCCF grants are funded by contributions from individuals, corporations and UnitedHealth Group employees. The 2018 UHCCF Velo & Vines Century Ride is hosted by the UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation, and sponsored by Arnot-Roberts Winery and Three Rivers Provider Network.
