Donna Kalajian Lagani Joins Hearst Foundations

Hearst today announced that Donna Kalajian Lagani will join the Hearst Foundations after nearly 25 years at Hearst Magazines. Kalajian Lagani had been senior vice president and group publishing director of Hearst Magazines Young Women’s Group, encompassing CosmopolitanSeventeen and Women’s Health. The announcement was made by Hearst President and CEO Steven R. Swartz. Kalajian Lagani assumes her new role February 4. Her replacement at Hearst Magazines will be named shortly.

“Donna has done an outstanding job leading our flagship magazine brand for more than two decades, and I am thrilled that she has chosen to take the next step in her career journey at the Hearst Foundations,” Swartz said.

The Hearst Foundations are national philanthropic resources for organizations working in the fields of culture, education, health and social services. The Foundations identify and fund outstanding nonprofits to ensure that people of all backgrounds in the United States have the opportunity to build healthy, productive and inspiring lives. Created by William Randolph Hearst, the Foundations are independent, private philanthropies operating separately from Hearst. Since 1945, the Foundations have made over 20,000 grants totaling more than $1.1 billion.

“Philanthropy is an important part of my life, and this is something I’ve always wanted to do,” Kalajian Lagani said. “I’ve had the absolute best job on the planet for more than two decades, overseeing Cosmopolitan, the most powerful young women’s media brand in the world, and more recently, adding SeventeenWomen’s Health and brand licensing to my purview. Now, after a ‘fun and fearless’ career generating revenue and profits, I feel truly blessed to work with the Foundations and its directors, Paul ‘Dino’ Dinovitz and George Irish. The Foundations’ grants profoundly change people’s lives, and I’m honored to join them to uphold the legacy of William Randolph Hearst and his philanthropic efforts.”

In a joint statement, Dinovitz and Irish said, “We have known for some time of Donna’s interest in philanthropy and impacting lives for the better, and we’re pleased that she will be joining us, bringing her philanthropic interest and executive talent to the Foundations.”

Kalajian Lagani joined Hearst Magazines in 1995 as publisher of Cosmopolitan and was named publishing director in 1999. She added oversight of Seventeen in 2014 and of Women’s Health in 2018, following Hearst’s acquisition of Rodale. During her career at Cosmopolitan, Kalajian Lagani introduced groundbreaking initiatives, most recently through mobile and artificial intelligence technology. She developed and immortalized the “fun fearless female” mantra used by Cosmopolitan editions worldwide. During her tenure, she helped launch CosmoGIRL! and Cosmo for Latinas, and was a strong force in bringing Cosmopolitan to new platforms, including Snapchat and Sirius XM Radio.

Kalajian Lagani conceived and produced a Cosmopolitan “takeover” of Times Square on New Year’s Eve in 2015 to celebrate the brand’s 50 birthday and developed the “Fun Fearless Life” conference in New York City to empower young women. She initiated a multi-year brand partnership with the USO and received the organization’s Distinguished Service Award in 2010. Kalajian Lagani also launched the $100,000 Cosmopolitan “Practice Safe Sun” research grant and was honored as a cosmetic industry leader at the prestigious DreamBall in 2005 for her support of the “Look Good Feel Better” program and the American Cancer Society.

Kalajian Lagani sits on the Board of Directors of Circle of Generosity and the Fragrance Foundation.

Billabong Announces Exclusive Collaboration With Iggy Pop

Billabong Announces Exclusive Collaboration With Iggy Pop The Iggy Pop Limited Collection Now Available Globally

Billabong today released the Iggy Pop x Billabong LAB collection, an exclusive apparel and accessory collaboration with one of the world’s most legendary and iconic musicians.

Once a streetwalking cheetah with a heart full of Napalm, these days Iggy’s more notorious for lounging all day at the beach or pool in boardshorts. “I usually wake up and stay nude for three or four hours,” Iggy says. “And when I feel like getting formal, I’ll put on boardshorts. Life is better in boardshorts.”

The collaboration with Billabong, whose Spring ’18 collection is inspired by the punk soundtrack of the late ’80s and ’90s is fitting as Iggy’s presence is laced throughout every surf and skate session of that era. Scott Hargraves, VP of Global Marketing at Billabong, elaborates on the relationship, “We are honored to be working so closely with Iggy on this curated men’s and women’s collection. He’s a true cultural icon, and we hope to pay homage to this living legend through our collaboration.”

The Iggy Pop x Billabong LAB collection was largely inspired by Iggy’s gig posters that appeared in the music venue halls of the ’80s and ’90s. These prints are an authentic tribute and a graphic history of Iggy’s legendary lust for life and thread the entire collection of boardshorts, graphic tees and pullovers. The wetsuit top titled, “Wild Thing Glide Skin,” cross-pollinates Billabong’s surf DNA with Iggy’s proto-punk attitude. This memorable tiger print leather jacket from the seminal album, Raw Power, has been redesigned and is now waterproof and ocean ready.

The Iggy Pop x Billabong LAB collection is a personal, fun and truly original collaboration that authentically reflects Iggy’s attitude towards life and art. It comes through Billabong LAB, a division of the company that supports artists, musicians, designers, photographers and surf icons and The Thread Shop, Sony Music’s innovative merchandising company working hand-in-hand with artists and brands to partner and create beautiful, fashionable and elevated new merchandise and products designed to enhance every lifestyle. The collection is available globally at select specialty retailers and online at www.billabong.com.

Marvel Announces Exclusive Agreement With Writer Ed Brisson

Marvel Announces Exclusive Agreement With Writer Ed BrissonEd Brisson joins the House of Ideas writing Old Man Logan, Iron Fist and more!

New York, NY—August 21, 2017—Marvel Entertainment is excited to announce that writer Ed Brisson will bring his powerhouse storytelling and creative flair to Marvel in an exclusive agreement. Brisson, who has made his mark with engaging work across the comic industry, is currently writing acclaimed Marvel books Iron Fist and Old Man Logan. He will continue to write exclusively for Marvel in this new agreement.

“I’ve been a huge Marvel fan since I was a kid. I grew up with stacks of Spider-Man, Punisher, Daredevil, Ghost Rider and X-Men littering my bedroom floor. The comics would be in tatters because I would read them repeatedly, often having to tape the covers back on,” said Brisson. “I remember being on vacation when Kraven’s Last Hunt was coming out and begging my mom to drive me a half hour to the closest town with a convenience store so that I wouldn’t miss out on the latest issue. It’s still surreal to me that I’m currently writing some of those characters that I grew up reading. I don’t know that I’ll ever get over that feeling. I hope that I don’t.”

“Right now, I’m happy to keep on doing what I’ve been doing,” he added. “I’ve been having a blast writing Iron Fist. He’s one of my favourite characters in the Marvel Universe and I think that Mike Perkins and I have been doing some pretty interesting stuff with him, adding things to his mythology that will hopefully be felt for years to come.”

“Ed has many strengths as a writer,” said senior editor Mark Paniccia. “Dialogue. Pacing. Mood. He’s an editor’s dream.”

This fall, Brisson will continue bringing his creative talent to the Marvel Universe with the Marvel Legacy stories of CABLE: NEWER MUTANTS and OLD MAN LOGAN: THE SCARLET SAMURAI.

“We’re taking Logan back to face off against one of his more classic foes: The Hand,” Brisson teased. “To my mind, The Hand’s never really been much of a serious threat for Logan in the past as he has a tendency to cut through them like butter. But, under the guidance of Gorgon and the mysterious Scarlet Samurai, there’s a plan to improve The Hand, to make them deadlier so that they’re no longer simply cannon fodder for the Marvel U. Speaking of Gorgon and Scarlet Samurai: Gorgon and Logan have gone head to head on several occasions and Gorgon is desperate the finally take Logan down. The Scarlet Samurai, however, is a new player in the game. What she wants with Logan is something that we’re going to slowly reveal over the arc.”

“Like any great writer—like Lemire before him—Ed effortlessly reminds the reader Logan’s someone who’s been through a lot of pain…that some decisions don’t come easy,” said Paniccia. “This is a character you need to sympathize with or it’s just another super hero book.”

Exclusively at Marvel, Brisson is prepared to bring his creativity to the heroic, well-known characters of the Marvel Universe.

“Everyone at Marvel has been great to work with,” said Brisson. “They seem to really understand who I am as a writer and have been playing to that, while also pushing me to grow as a writer. It’s been just over a year since I started writing for Marvel on a regular basis and I feel that I’ve learned more from my collaborators and editors in that short time than I have in the years leading up to it. It’s truly been an incredible experience.”
