Canadian-Dutch-Korean singer-songwriter SOMI has signed to Interscope Records as part of the label’s partnership with THEBLACKLABEL. After winning first place on Korean reality singing competition Produce 101, SOMI emerged as a solo artist in June 2019 with her single “BIRTHDAY,” which has since amassed over 53M streams worldwide on Spotify and 78M views on YouTube to date. The news about SOMI’s signing broke Monday in an exclusive story with Variety where SOMI stated, “I’m very excited to join the Interscope and Universal Music family! They have a great roster of artists I love and a long history of breaking acts. I’m looking forward to the next steps in my career and can’t wait to share my music with the world!”
Today, SOMI announces her brand-new single entitled “What You Waiting For” along with an accompanying music video marking this her first release via Interscope Records. The song was co-written by SOMI and BLACKPINK’s producer, Teddy and represents a new musical direction for SOMI, as she is shifting her practice as a musician and songwriter to mature her sound.
