The inaugural Rita Hayworth Gala was held in 1984 to honor her legacy, sparked by her courageous decision to share her Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Today, it has evolved into a signature event in New York City benefiting Alzheimer’s research and care. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, an estimated 7 million people are affected by the disease. Since its inception, this significant gala has raised over $87 million, fueling critical advancements in care and research.
This year, leading up to October 25th, the Triple Challenge is underway, encouraging further contributions. Tonight’s event, underwritten by Rolex, is held at The Plaza Hotel, where we celebrate the outstanding contributions of Eugenia Zukerman and Richard (Dick) Novik in raising awareness and advancing Alzheimer’s research. So far in 2023, over $432 million has been raised through donations and partnerships, supporting efforts to find a cure and preventative measures. The disease disproportionately affects women, with two-thirds of those diagnosed being female, and older Black Americans, who are twice as likely to be diagnosed. Recent studies rank The Bronx third among U.S. counties for Alzheimer’s prevalence, with New York State holding the second spot among eastern and southeastern states.
In her mother’s honor, founder Princess Yasmin Aga Khan has continued to spread the message that ‘Life doesn’t stop with a diagnosis.’ This evening’s host, Wayne Brady, will lead an event featuring a performance by Leslie Odom Jr. with Cafe Wha Unlimited Band and a special moment by Chris Mann.
In loving memory of Clara Bell (Anderson) Gardner.
