Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist JAWNY releases the highly absurdist video for his song “Trigger of Love.” Directed by Spencer Ford, the visual is an eclectic showcase of the JAWNY’s restless creativity and off-kilter humor, featuring a dystopian room full of extended measuring tape, magical bullet-holes, and kayaking in the Los Angeles River.
“Trigger of Love” is featured on JAWNY’s debut major label project For Abby which released in October on Interscope Records. The undeniably catchy track was one of the standouts from the project, garnering praise from Zane Lowe, who regarded it as “Authentic, heartfelt and meaningful” on Apple Music, Beats1. For Abby is a conceptual, narrative piece in which JAWNY attempts to rekindle a troubled relationship with ‘Abby’ by giving her a “mixtape” of her favorite songs in hopes that she will eventually call him back. The project, which Dork Magazine noted was stacked with “upbeat, personality-packed songs” in a 4/5 review, starts off on an up-tempo high note with songs like “Super Bad Mantra” (hailed by Wonderland Magazine as “irresistibly catchy”) and the playful “You Gotta Man” on Side A. Upon flipping the tape to Side B, the mood gets significantly more introspective in sentimental & confessional lo-fi ballads like “When I Fall Apart”, “4tounce”, “Coloring” and the superb title track “For Abby”.
The project displays the untamed originality JAWNY first revealed in early releases like his 2019 viral hit “Honeypie.” A “slacker-funk gem”, as referenced by DIY Mag, “Honeypie” has racked up over 175 million streams globally across all streaming platforms and has surpassed 15 million views on YouTube. For Abby, which was hailed by NME as “packed full of funky slacker rock beats and infectious indie anthems” in a 4-star review, is a stellar collection that showcases JAWNY’s restless creativity and eclectic aesthetic.
Born Jacob Sullenger, JAWNY grew up outside Oakland and started playing guitar when he was just six-years-old. At age 13, he began making beats with his brother, eventually landing placements with several rappers in the SoundCloud scene of the late-aughts. By 2017 he’d gained a cult-like following thanks in part to a series of viral videos posted on Twitter, and drew further buzz in 2018 with a self-titled debut EP made under the stage name Johnny Utah. In 2019, he broadened his fanbase with widely praised singles like “Honeypie” and “4Tounce,” then landed a deal with Interscope Records by the year’s end.
