Brooklyn-based, Jamaican-born recording artist Kris Yute’s song “I Did It” took TikTok by storm. The track even garnered the attention of his longtime friend, “You” and “Gossip Girl” actor Penn Badgley, who posted a video of the two of them dancing to it on Instagram. Today, Yute released the official music video for the breakout hit, featuring an appearance from Badgley himself.
The “I Did It” video is vibrant, featuring collages and animation by its director Lonewolf, and was filmed in quarantine by Yute himself. To make the collages, Lonewolf pieced together imagery from dozens of vintage magazines from the 1960s and 1970s.
“This song is mostly a celebration of personal accomplishments and a reflection of the long journey and struggle it took to get there. Sonically, I feel like I figured out a way to bring all my influences together. This video is another accomplishment to add to the list and Lonewolf executed the vision 100%,” Kris explained.
On directing during a pandemic, Lonewolf said “Even though the crazy times that we’re living in makes it hard to be a director, this process turned out to be really fun and challenging for me. To create a whole world through images and objects that matched the tone of the song turned out to be one of my favorite forms of mixed media and bittersweet to finish. Bouncing ideas with Kris and his team to create his first visual has been a learning experience and a pleasure.”
