Dreamer Boy is back with more sweet nostalgia on his new single “Crybaby,” out today via slowplay/Caroline: LISTEN HERE. The track arrives alongside a trippy, retro-styled video inspired by David Bowie, George Harrison, and the tales of Dreamer Boy’s youth. It’s a glittery, technicolor fantasy that surrenders to the childlike freedom of hopping on a bike, jumping on a trampoline, and spinning in circles.
The single debuted this morning as an Apple Music 1 World First Premiere with Zane Lowe. “I just don’t see a future where many, many of us don’t absolutely fall in love with Dreamer Boy,” Zane Lowe said about the song. “I just think the music is so flawless.”
The visuals match the track’s misty psychedelia: WATCH HERE. “I’ve been holding them back when I’m feeling like that,” Dreamer Boy sings over a blurry swirl of guitars. “Crybaby” reveals the singer/songwriter at his most vulnerable. “This song is about friendships, courage, and love,” he says. “I wrote it after a psychedelic experience that led to an outpouring of emotions that were bottled up for a long time. This song is meant to be that release.”
Dreamer Boy’s Previous Accomplishments
This is Dreamer Boy’s second single this year, coming on the heels of “Know You” and its accompanying video, which featured clips submitted from fans and friends. He’s been building that following organically, hitting the road with the likes of Clairo, Omar Apollo, The Marias, Still Woozy, and more since introducing his “cowboy pop” in 2018. PAPER Magazine wrote that “Know You” is “a track with mesmerizing synths and an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia that will have you chasing after the feeling of not knowing someone, but wanting to.”
Dreamer Boy’s independent breakthrough, Love, Nostalgia, drew acclaim from Milk.xyz, Elevator Magazine, and OnesToWatch, who called it a “multi-dimensional narrative of summer romance and teenage dreams. A wavy time capsule that transports you from 90’s MC-808s to the woozy dream pop of 2019.” The album’s follow-up single, “Puppy Dog,” received praise from The FADER, and had Clash comparing its “blissful naivety” to Rex Orange County and its “choppy guitar” to Prince. The track has amassed 7 million streams and counting.
