Paella: Spain’s Legacy to the World

Paella is a traditional dish of Spanish cuisine, originally from the autonomous community of Valencia, although it is very popular throughout Spain and in many other countries around the world. Paella is rice cooked with a variety of ingredients, which may include seafood, chicken, rabbit, vegetables, and spices such as saffron.

Famous all over the world

Paella is cooked in a shallow, flat iron skillet, known as a paellera or paella pan, and cooked over direct heat. The rice is cooked with broth and seasoned with garlic, tomato and other spices according to the recipe. Once the rice is cooked, it is served directly in the paella pan and is usually garnished with lemon and parsley sprigs. Paella is a very versatile dish and can be adapted to personal tastes and preferences.

If you want to know a little more about rice in general, its characteristics and how to prepare a perfect white rice you can click on the following link: https://carolinarice.com/products/white-rice/.

Types of paella

There are many types of paella that can be found in Spain and around the world, and the choice of ingredients can vary according to region, season and personal tastes. Some of the most popular types of paella include:

  • Paella valenciana: The original paella, which includes rabbit, chicken and green beans.
  • Paella de mariscos: A paella that includes a variety of seafood.
  • Paella Mixta: A combination of all the ingredients mentioned above.
  • Vegetable Paella: A vegetarian paella that includes vegetables such as peppers, peas and green beans.
  • Paella negra: A paella made with black rice dyed with squid ink and including seafood.
  • Paella de montaña: A paella that includes game meat, such as venison or wild boar, and mushrooms.

These are just a few examples, and there are many regional and personal variations of paella.

Some necessary preparations

Preparing a good paella requires some special techniques and skills to ensure that the dish is cooked properly and tastes authentic.

Important techniques

  • Heating the paella pan: It is advisable to preheat the paella pan over medium-low heat to obtain a good temperature and prevent the ingredients from burning or sticking.
  • Sauté the ingredients: Ingredients such as onion, garlic, tomato and meats should be sautéed in olive oil before adding the rice. This helps to flavor and create a base for the dish.
  • Add ingredients in the correct order: It is important to add ingredients in the correct order, starting with those that take the longest to cook, such as meat, and ending with those that cook the fastest, such as seafood.
  • Cook rice properly: It is important to use the right type of rice (such as Bomba rice) and cook it with broth and spices for flavor. The amount of liquid should be adequate so that the rice is well cooked and is neither too dry nor too wet.
  • Let the paella rest: After cooking the paella, it is recommended to let it rest for a few minutes so that the rice absorbs the flavors and the remaining liquids.

Preparing the paella pan

Before using a paella pan for the first time, it is important to prepare it properly to ensure that it is ready for use and to prolong its life. The following are the steps to follow to prepare a paella pan before use:

  1. Wash the paella pan: Wash the paella pan thoroughly with soap and water, making sure to remove any residue or impurities that may have been left over from manufacturing or storage.
  2. Dry the paella pan: Dry the paella pan with a clean cloth and make sure it is completely dry before use.
  3. Coat with oil: Heat the paella pan over medium heat and coat the surface with olive oil or vegetable oil. Be sure to coat all areas of the pan and allow the oil to heat until it begins to smoke.
  4. Cook the paella pan: Cook the paella pan for about 10-15 minutes over medium-high heat to allow the oil to penetrate the surface and create a natural non-stick coating.
  5. Allow to cool: Remove the paella pan from the heat and allow it to cool completely before cleaning and storing it again.

By following these steps, your paella pan will be ready to use and will have a natural non-stick surface that will help prevent ingredients from sticking and make it easier to clean after use. It is important to repeat this process from time to time, especially if the paella pan has not been used for a long time.

Finally, all that remains is to enjoy this legacy of Spain, a worthy reminder of the diversity and richness of this culture for the whole world.

How to get a car on finance with bad credit

If you’ve been declined car finance, you may be thinking it’s the end of the road. Whilst for many applicants, this can mean that you may not get approval, it can be worth having hope and putting yourself in a better financial position before you start to apply again. There are factors that you can consider helping increase your credit score, build a credit score, and increase the likelihood of getting a car on finance. However, firstly, it can be a good idea to get more of an insight into how car finance is affected by credit scores. The guide below looks to do exactly that. Let’s take a look at how your previous credit affects approvals and also the top 5 ways in which you can increase your chances of getting a car when you have poor credit

How does credit history affect car finance?

Many people with bad credit don’t actually know how their low credit score affects car finance approvals. When you apply for car finance, a lender wants to know the likelihood of you being trusted to pay back your loan on time and in full. They can do this by referring to your previous borrowing history. If your history shows high levels of debt or missed or late repayments, you are more likely to default on any future loans too. This increases the risk to the lender, and they may decline you. Alternatively, some lenders can approve you for finance but can set a higher interest rate to help secure the deal. Having a better credit score and a long history of being able to handle your credit or finance responsibly will not only get you easier acceptances, but it will also increase your credit score and get you a better car finance rate.

5 ways to increase the chances of getting a car with a poor credit score.

Whilst car finance will never be guaranteed and you will need to meet the lenders criteria before you can get approved, there are a few factors you can consider preparing your application.

  1. Check your credit report.

You’d be surprised how many car finance applicants don’t know what their current credit score is and what is listed on their report. It can be a good idea to get a free credit report from a trusted credit referencing agency and take some time to see what’s recorded on there. You should make sure all your information is accurate and up to date as having misinformation on your credit report can be negatively affecting your score. It’s also important that the information you supply on your application matches your credit report as lenders use it to confirm your details and reduce the risk of fraudulent applications.

  1. Reduce any existing debt.

One of the factors that can affect your car finance application and also your credit score is how much debt you currently owe. High levels of existing debt negatively impact your score and you should try to reduce any debt before taking out car finance. You should try to only use around 50% of any available credit limits and if you really want to make an impact on your credit score, try to keep it under 30%. From a lenders point of view, when you have lots of debt already and aren’t clearing it, they may think you can’t handle taking on any more credit. By taking control of your finances and reducing your debts it can make your finance more manageable and could increase your monthly affordability.

  1. Build a credit history.

It’s a common misconception that having no previous credit history is a good thing. However, lenders can’t see how you handle credit without any evidence. It can be hard to get a car on finance but without a credit check being performed but most lenders use a soft search that won’t affect your score. You can start to build a small credit history by using a credit building card to make small purchases on and paying them off on time and in full each month. Alternatively, something as small as getting a mobile phone contract in your name and setting up a direct debit to meet the repayment each month can build a credit history.

  1. Make payments on time.

If you currently have finance or credit, it’s important that you focus on these repayments first before you look to open new credit accounts. The easiest way to increase your credit score is by keeping on top of repayments and showing evidence that you can meet deadlines. It can be a good idea to set up direct debits for any payments you need to make so they are never missed. If you are struggling with your current repayment schedule, you should never miss the payment and instead speak with your lender who provided the loan and see how they can help.

  1. Consider hire purchase.

If you’re struggling to get a car on finance, you may be applying or the wrong kind of agreement. Hire purchase deals are never guaranteed but they could be more accessible for bad credit applicants. This is because hire purchase is a form of secured loan and means the lender owns the car throughout the agreement. If you fail to stay up to date with your repayments, the lender has the right to take the car off you so it lessens the risk, and they can use the car as collateral. This shouldn’t be taken lightly though and missed payments or having the car repossessed can lead to much more serious financial implications and massively affect your ability to borrow money in the future.

MUZICSWIPE

Bridging the gap between artists and music lovers, MuzicSwipe is a music discovery app, platform, and community focused on rising artists.

With the lack of female enterprisers on the C-suite level, CEO Jackie Dalius fills a void in the industry. 360 MAGAZINE had an opportunity to have an intimate chat with Jackie. Here’s what she had to say.

What inspired you to develop MuzicSwipe?

I grew up just loving music and artists so much, which led me wanting to pursue a career in this industry. Following graduating from USC in 2019, I shortly began managing an indie-rock band in Los Angeles, where I learned so much more about the behind-the-scenes of being a rising artist. I saw so many missing pieces that I ended up incorporating in MuzicSwipe to give rising artists a home to gain so much more exposure in an organic way.

Is there a difference between MuzicSwipe and what’s currently already offered on the market (i.e., ReverbNation, Sonicbids)?

Of course! MuzicSwipe is a place for rising artists and fans that love being the “first” to discover new music and talent. We offer swiping technology, where our users swipe right if they like the anonymous 15-second music clip or swipe left if they don’t like it. Users can match with artists to unlock their exclusive profiles that offer group chats with the matched artist and their community of fans. MuzicSwipe is the place for music lovers, where users are actively going to discover new music and artists.

Will your app extend paid opportunities for its subscribers?

Yes! We currently have many different features for our users, whether you’re an artist or a fan to help smooth your discovery process, such as Clip Boosting for artists to elevate their music to a wider audience to be discovered faster.

What advice would you offer another woman trying to establish their footing in the tech field?

My advice is to just continue being you and stick to your vision. There will be many different opinions in your ear all the time. However, you should always stay as close as possible to your vision, which will evolve over time. Especially since I mostly find myself in a room filled with men during my meetings, which at first can be intimidating, but if you keep your head up and speak with confidence, then you will conquer the room.

Are you or the app aligned with any philanthropic efforts?

We are always happy to support any philanthropic efforts, especially going into 2023, I definitely want to make that one of the priorities this year!

What can we expect in 2023 from MuzicSwipe?

People can expect MuzicSwipe in 2023 to be out of Beta and fully launched! We have been in Beta since January 31, 2022, while fully developing along the way new features for our users. We will continue our lifestyle side of our brand through events and experiences powered by MuzicSwipe. We did some awesome events last year, such as an artist weekend in Miami featuring artists like Fetty Wap, Thuy, Destiny Rogers, and Tone Stith as well as a holiday party at the Peppermint Club in West Hollywood featuring our top performers on our app. In addition to being launched to the public and our lifestyle events, we will be announcing fun new partnerships with brands that align with our mission.

Is there anything you wish to speak about that we haven’t already mentioned?

I am so thankful for the users and future users of MuzicSwipe, and I can not wait for the future surprises we have up our sleeves to be announced and launched. 2023 will be such a great year for us!

Even the Great Resignation has a silver lining

Market commentators are fond of their buzzwords, and none has been more popular in recent years than the GREAT RESIGNATION. So-called, because workers have been abandoning their jobs in the highest numbers since the Great Suffragette Movement of the early 1900s.

Power to the people is good, but how can small businesses buck the trend and keep their people happy and engaged? How can they find good people to fill the rapidly rising vacancies, especially in a period of super-low unemployment?

With existing technology or E-Commerce 2.0 as it is often called, small business is wasting the time of their people and their customers. In frustrating back and forth looking for the right data to serve customers. It costs money and eventually will cost you good talent as people leave in search of less frustrating and more rewarding roles.

But there is a second benefit and that is efficiency and effectiveness. With E-Commerce 3.0 you’ll be able to deploy your people to more valuable customer facing roles and let technology and integrated systems shoulder a lot more of the load.

Data is easier to find, you own it, and you can therefore service customers more easily and even forecast their needs ahead of time. All whilst your team finds it much easier to answer queries, handle orders, and deliver.

An E-Commerce 3.0 solution is one that integrates all the elements of e-commerce and CRM together in a seamless and single source of truth.

The last thing a small business owner wants to do is roll out a tech solution that then requires them to pay people to get one computer to talk to another. This is the main criticism of old-school, e-comm 2.0 systems – they don’t integrate and in fact can often override or seek to correct each other’s data, resulting in confusion and wasted time trying to get true data.

E-Commerce 3.0 systems are integrated:

  • there is a single source of truth as all data sits in the same platform with website, POS and e-commerce all integrated
  • employees will spend less time finding data
  • follow up messages or order updates can be automated saving valuable employee time
  • surveys can be automated
  • customers can be categorized and can get products at their ‘price’ without having to speak to a staff member
  • customers will get better service as the small business will have the latest information at hand
  • all parts of the business from sales to operations to customer service to delivery will all be working from the same songbook on a customer

E-Commerce 3.0 solutions are also a smart move for anyone investing in a business because they will improve profit and short and long-term returns as well as make a business more valuable to any purchaser.

Being a customer of an E-Commerce 3.0 business is a vastly more positive experience and the customer will see better more accurate and faster service. Doing business will be easier and this will attract customers to do more business with that organization. It is a positive reinforcement cycle.

Of course, most of the above discussion is about the business and its current customers, but let’s also make mention that all this data and the availability of bulk email and mail merge systems allows onboarding and marketing to new customers and prospects simple, targeted, and powerful.

In summary, E-Commerce 3.0 offers value to small businesses in streamlining systems, but it also offers a great solution to closing any organizational gaps in terms of employees by increasing the productivity per employee and the time spent on needless administrative work.

This can lead to increased employee retention as they find more value in their daily work, and the value of the small business will boom when that silver lining is found.

Five Ways to Be More Eco-Conscious in the New Year

There is some good news in the race to prevent climate change’s worst ravages and reverse the damage already done. The world’s top minds report that it is still possible to reach net-zero emissions by the year 2050 if all major world governments agree to triple renewable energy expenditures and devote no new investments in fossil fuel supply projects.

The bad news is current efforts aren’t sufficient to reach the original 2050 goal.

As tempting as it may be to throw your hands up in despair and cry, “My efforts make no difference — why bother,” it’s now that you need to double down on sustainability. Everyone does. The only life you can control is your own — wouldn’t you rather devote your efforts to building hope than wallowing in despair?

You can make a difference, and there is still time. Furthermore, prolonged, daily and reproducible efforts that you can readily manage are often more effective than a single dramatic act like switching to solar or buying a pricey electric car.

What habits should you consider changing that transform your lifestyle into one that’s more planet-friendly, one sustainable choice at a time? Here are five ways to be more eco-conscious in the new year.

Up Your Secondhand Game

Maybe you have a favorite thrift shop that’s supplied at least half of your wardrobe. That’s a fabulous start. Now, ask yourself this — what else can you buy secondhand?

Doing so steps kindly on the planet by preventing the damages caused by harvesting the earth’s resources to make new products. The manufacturing process likewise demands a heavy toll in water and energy.

However, refurbished goods like computer electronics often function as well as a new model for a fraction of the energy cost — and retail price. Some companies do more to facilitate a circular economy process. For example, Apple continues to strive toward 100% renewable energy and has made its products more durable while emphasizing the use of recyclable materials to encourage repurposing.

Take a stroll through your local thrift, consignment or pawn shop to check out what other wares you might be able to bring back to life besides electronics. For example, a new circular saw can run as high as $2,000, but you can pickup new blades for $20 to $100 — if the cord isn’t frayed, go for it.

Power Audit Your Home

Is your home filled with unseen energy vampires? Unless you’ve embraced tiny, off-grid living where you keep tabs on how much power you use, you might have no idea. A power audit of your home might sound intimidating — but it boils down to common sense. Here’s your 4-step guide:

1. Start With Your Outlets

Leaving small appliances plugged in all the time causes them to use electricity even without the power running. This standby electricity loss can add up over time — think of the effect of leaving a faucet dripping.

Wherever possible, install power strips that enable you to unplug multiple objects at once. For example, use one with your entertainment center to instantly douse your television, video players and gaming consoles and clear your internal space of some of that constant ambient light emitted from multiple power indicators.

2. Look to Your Curtains

If you rent an old apartment with drafty windows that your landlord refuses to fix, a set of blackout shades can improve energy efficiency, if only by blocking air entry and escape. It’s understandable to resist paying to enhance someone else’s property, but you might consider simple fixes like a line of caulk you can bead on for less than $20.

Assuming you have energy-efficient windows, take advantage of passive solar to save energy. Take down those heavy curtains and replace them with one-way film that gives you an unfettered view of the outdoors while keeping looky-loos out with their prying eyes. The light will heat your space without a single panel, but the UV protection keeps it from fading your furnishings and floors.

3. Upgrade Your Appliances

Ever since the Energy Star program began in 1992, manufacturers have competed to design the most efficient appliances, saving electricity and water use. Assuming you own your home, evaluate if you’re due for an upgrade. Doing so could save you considerable cash over time.

However, you still have to dispose of your old model. Please take it to a certified transfer center or arrange curbside pickup with your local facility to ensure that reusable metal and plastic see new life instead of moldering in a landfill.

4. Check Your Thermostat

Turning your thermostat up or down a single degree for the 8 hours when you work can save you 1% of your total home energy bill. If you don’t have a programmable model, please consider one.

What if you telecommute? You can still take advantage. You might be too young to remember President Jimmy Carter’s fireside chats, but dialing down the thermostat and putting on a sweater is still a simple way to save energy nearly anyone can afford.

Reconsider Your Commute

You might not be able to afford an electric car or even a bicycle. Fortunately, the prices of both continue to drop, but that hardly helps if they remain out of your budget.

Maybe you resisted taking public transportation in the past because you figured it would be too much of a hassle. However, could you hop on the bus sometimes — like when you aren’t laden with groceries? Consider these advantages:

  • More time for you: When you drive, you must focus on that task. Public transport lets you read a book, tune into a guided mindfulness meditation or stare out the windows as passersby as you delve into private reverie.
  • Get work done: Who wants to sit down and do more work when they arrive home? If you leave the office with emails left unsent, use your commute time and phone to get it done.
  • Open yourself to opportunities: You can meet some interesting characters on public transportation, but here’s the thing — you can never tell who you might encounter. A chance meeting could accelerate your career or lead to a lifelong friendship. Be open to possibilities.

Of course, if you can afford to switch to a green vehicle, please consider doing so, at least for short jaunts around town. Electric bikes are a blast, upping your daily exercise quotient without leaving you sweaty, and they’re perfect for running to the corner market. Some roadways are scary, but here’s the thing about our society — if enough consumers demand better infrastructure by increasing bike use, authorities will eventually listen. Push for change.

Elevate Your Eating

Did you know that red meat contributes to a considerable portion of global warming? Industrial farms incentivize deforestation, and the earth needs more trees, not fewer. Furthermore, livestock emits methane — a greenhouse gas far heavier than carbon dioxide.

Maybe you aren’t ready to switch to a vegan lifestyle, but you can honor meatless Monday. Feeling ambitious? Why don’t you go for fish Friday, too? Your health will thank you, as the World Health Organization casts a skeptical eye on red meat consumption and its link with cancer risks.

Look at how you shop, too. Buying from your local farmer’s market decreases transportation costs and emissions while providing you with organic goods for far less than you’d pay at the grocery. Better yet, go at the end of the day to score even better bargains, as many vendors would rather sell goods at a discount than take them home to rot before the next market opening.

5. Reconnect With Nature

Perhaps the most pleasant way to be more eco-friendly in the new year is to reconnect with nature. Studies show that kids raised in the natural world become better sustainability stewards as adults, and fostering a greater appreciation for the beauty surrounding you will compel you to protect it.

Find a green outdoor space near your home where you can flee for solace if you live in the city. Spend your weekends taking hiking excursions — it’s free and you’ll get more exercise and enjoy the healing qualities of fresh air and sunshine. Better yet, take an extra bag and pick up any trash you see as a thank you to the planet for sharing her healing beauty with you.

JEWELS HERITAGE PROJECT

In celebration of Black History Month, 360 MAGAZINE will be accepting contributions on behalf of The Jewels Heritage Project, Inc. (JHP), a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) entity.

The Mission

JHP intends to build a monument to commemorate and showcase an important part of African American history and culture: the beginning of Black Greek-Letter Organizations, also known as “The Divine Nine.” Specifically, the JHP will build a monument at the birthplace of Alpha Phi Alpha. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African Americans. The monument will be located at 411 E. State Street, in upstate, Ithaca, New York.

African American Historical Sites

Once completed, this monument will join other national historic sites in central New York State as part of a freedom trailway dedicated to African American history and culture, including:

  • The Harriet Tubman Residence and the Harriett Tubman Home for the Elderly Residence, located at 182 South Street and 180 South Street, in Auburn, New York
  • The Birthplace of Alex Haley, the celebrated author, best known for his books: “Roots: The Saga of an American Family,” and “The Autobiography of Malcolm X,” who lived at 212 Cascadilla Street, Ithaca, New York
  • The St. James AME Zion Church, located at 116 Cleveland Avenue, Ithaca, New York, was built in 1833. St. James served as a station on the Underground Railroad for fugitive slaves in route to Canada. Famous leaders of the Underground Railroad who visited St. James AME Zion Church include Harriett Tubman and Frederick Douglass.

Alpha Phi Alpha in History

On December 4, 1906, seven African American men attending Cornell University met at 411 E. State Street, in Ithaca, New York, and established Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, to support each other and provide service to, and uplift, the African American community. Following in the footsteps of Alpha Phi Alpha, eight other Black Greek-letter Fraternities and Sororities were founded upon similar principles of service to the African American community. Together, the nine historically Black Greek-letter organizations came together to form the National Pan-Hellenic Council or the Divine Nine.

Alpha Phi Alpha was a leader in establishing voter rights and civil rights for African Americans in the United States. For example, the Fraternity was an early leader in the voting rights struggle for African Americans and founded the national campaign, “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” to register Black voters. Moreover, in 1919, the Fraternity pioneered the campaign, “Go-to-High School, Go-to-College.” Further, Alpha Phi Alpha played a central role—in providing funding, legal expertise, and public relations—in many landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases that ultimately eradicated racial segregation.

Members of Alpha Phi Alpha have been leaders in the community and occupy prominent roles in American and African American history and culture. They include: W.E.B. DuBois, Jesse Owens, Duke Ellington, Congressman Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Paul Robeson, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Senator Edward Brooke, The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Joseph Lowery (featured on cover), Justice Thurgood Marshall, Comedian and Activist Dick Gregory, Coach Eddie Robinson, Ambassador Andrew Young, Professor Cornel West, Singer/Songwriter Lionel Richie, and U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock. Reverend Joseph E. Lowery, the dean of the Civil Rights Movement, delivered the benediction for President Barack Obama’s inauguration.

About the Monument

The JHP will build a monument in central New York State, in Ithaca, New York, at the birthplace of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. We intend to build the monument in two years at an estimated total cost of $4 million. The monument will include a giant wall resembling the front façade of the original residence at 411 E. State Street. In addition, the monument will feature a series of walls that will narrate the historical significance of historic site. See a picture of the proposed design of the monument below.
