SLO BREW × EXPANSION

SLO BREW ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR MOVE AND EXPANSION

Popular Pub Will Maintain Authentic Spirit and Atmosphere After Relocation

After 27 memorable years in Downtown San Luis Obispo, SLO Brewing Company is happy to announce the expansion and relocation of its popular restaurant, bar and concert venue to a new space on Higuera Street this December.

Over the years, SLO Brew has become an iconic cultural and musical hot spot that features local and world famous bands and performers. The venue offers an intimate and authentic live music experience where fans are able to get up close to their favorite artists while enjoying SLO Brew’s award-winning craft beers. Together, all these elements create an atmosphere of good vibes, fun and accessibility that keep their following coming back.

The new SLO Brew is slated to open in December at 736 Higuera Street, just a few hundred feet away from the original Garden Street location and still in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo. Located in the historic Carissa Building, the new space will feature new elements, including a wood-fired pizza oven, an outdoor, creek-side dining patio with fire pits, and four all-suite lofts designed with a modern urban aesthetic on the upper floor. The restaurant, bar, brewing tanks and “kettles”, and the concert stage will share the 6,500-square-foot first floor, while the Whiskey Lounge will overlook the main floor from the mezzanine, complete with reserved seating, bottle service and a private bar.

Destined to become downtown San Luis Obispo’s most coveted accommodations, the SLO Brew Lofts are spacious two-and three-bedroom self-contained units, complete with kitchens, dining areas and living rooms with fireplaces.  While located above The Brew, on the second floor, they will have a separate entrance and can be reserved through the SLO Brew website or VRBO.com.  The heart of The Lofts is the Carissa Club, featuring a gourmet kitchen, lounge area, fireplace and billiard table, as well as a meeting space, and a large private roof top deck overlooking picturesque San Luis Obispo Creek and the nearby Mission.  The Carissa Club is reserved separately.

SLO Brew co-owner Hamish Marshall is adamant that the quality of the musical performances will continue to be top-shelf when the doors open at the upgraded SLO Brew building and that the dance floor will remain.

“The upgraded SLO Brew will keep the local spirit it’s always had,” said Marshall. “The concert experience will still be intimate, but we will now be able to offer more dining options, an enhanced sound system and innovative design elements, along with fresh brews and pub-favorite food pairings.”

In addition to the SLO Brew move, SLO Brewing Co. is also constructing a second site, to be known as The Rock. Located off Broad Street, near the airport, this new brew facility will expand their production capacity, and will feature a tasting room, restaurant, and event space.   Already on tap at over 30 local restaurants and bars in San Luis Obispo County, SLO Brew has plans to ramp up beer production and their commercial distribution.  The Rock is scheduled to open early in 2016.

About SLO Brew

Since 1988, SLO Brew has been a vital part of the San Luis Obispo community, regularly featuring live performances from local, national and internationally recognized artists, alongside their award-winning craft beers. The restaurant, bar and intimate music venue has made SLO Brew a popular cultural hub for residents, music and beer lovers alike. SLO Brew plans to continue to evolve as one of the major destinations for music, food and great craft beer in the state, offering a unique and authentic atmosphere for their guests to enjoy.

Comparing, Contrasting, Cutting, GUINNESS

The Guinness Brewery at St. James’s Gate in Dublin has been brewing beer since its founder, Arthur Guinness, signed his now famous 9,000-year lease on the property on December 31st 1759. The brewery began its life producing ales for Dublin City, it would soon embark on a journey brewing new styles of beer originating in London known as Porter’s and Stout’s. This journey would lead the then small family brewery located on the outskirts of Dublin City to become the largest Stout brewery in the world. Along the 258-year journey that Guinness has undertaken it has been frequently enjoyed at the table alongside a well paired dish.

The secret of a good pairing lies in the three C’s, Comparing, Contrasting and Cutting.

We will now use Guinness Draught Stout as an example of how to Compare and Contrast the same beer with two different dishes, and examine how the presence of one can interact with the flavor of the other.

When Comparing we are required to find foods with similar flavor and intensity to that of the beer. These flavors will then compliment and resonate with each other.

For our first pairing, we use Guinness Draught Stout, found in new throw-back cans featuring the Kinkajou, a marketing creation from the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s by legendary artist John Gilory. Distinctively dark with a rich creamy head, coffee and malty, and the perfect balance of bitter, sweet and roast characters. These flavors are the product of using roasted barley in our brewing and also give Guinness Draught Stout it’s iconic ruby red color. When the barley is roasted at 466 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 and 1Ž2 hours it undergoes a change called the Maillard reaction, a chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars that also gives browned food its distinctive flavor. The flavors from the roasted barley used in Guinness Draught Stout balance wonderfully with the similar rich roasted flavors of an Applewood Smoked Bacon Sandwich with each sip of stout harmonizing with every bite of sandwich until both glass and plate are empty.

GUINNESS DRAUGHT & APPLEWOOD SMOKED BACON SANDWICH

After looking at Comparing let us now review Contrasting Guinness Draught Stout with a different dish. As we know Stout tastes of coffee and bitter flavors, let us use those to contrast against and accentuate the sweet and creamy deliciousness of a warm Apple and Pear Tart nestled under a generous scoop of Vanilla Gelato. This pairing is very similar to having your cup of coffee with a sweet pastry or confection.

GUINNESS DRAUGHT & APPLE AND PEAR TART

Finally let’s discuss Cutting. We will utilize Guinness Blonde American Lager as our example for Cutting. Guinness Blonde American Lager, light and hoppy with floral and citrus notes and a long malt biscuit finish. This crisp and refreshing lager has a lively mouthfeel provided by its ample carbonation, this carbonation is ideal for “Cutting” through creamy and juicy dishes and cleansing the palate after each bite. While enjoying a burger at a BBQ or creamy ham and cheese croquettes using this pairing technique, Cutting scrubs the palate and resets your taste buds after each sip.

BLONDE AMERICAN LAGER & HAM & CHEDDAR CHEESE CROQUETTES

We hope you enjoy using the 3 C’s for your future beer and food pairing adventures! Happy St. Patrick’s Day from the Brewer’s at Guinness and always remember to Drink Responsibly.

GUINNESS × ST. PATRICK’S DAY

200 Years of Friendship and St. PATRICK’s DAYS

In Time for Milestone St. Patrick’s Day, Guinness is donating $1 to charity for each adult that dons a ‘Stache

Above the Upper Lip, USA (February 21, 2018) – This year marks the 200th St. Patrick’s Day Guinness will share with America, the latest reminder of the two-century connection between a legendary brewery and its good friends across the Atlantic. Once again, in the days and weeks leading up to March 17, it’s time for us all to embrace the stories we tell, the memories we make and the bonds we build over a pint of Guinness.

The Guinness brand is encouraging all Americans, 21 years and older, to make a simple pledge (assuming they’ve already promised to drink responsibly, of course): gather with friends, new or old, toast to the many things we all have in common…and give a ‘Stache. Indeed, this St. Patrick’s Day, the Guinness ‘Stache – that unmistakable hint of foam left behind on the upper lip after the first sip of stout – is back as a symbol of the goodness and the Irish-ness that lives within all of us.

From now through March 31, 2018, when adult beer lovers share photos of their ‘Staches – self-grown and groomed, drawn-on, or Guinness-enhanced – on social media (tagging @GuinnessUS and using #StacheForCharity), Guinness will donate $1 (up to $100,000) to the Guinness Gives Back Fund*, which supports nonprofits that contribute to the common good in our communities, including Team Rubicon, a veteran-led disaster response organization.

“Over the past 200 years, so much has changed – yet so much has stayed the same, like people coming together to raise a pint of Guinness with their friends on St. Patrick’s Day,” said Guinness Brand Director Emma Giles. “We are proud to be part of such an enduring tradition that celebrates Irish heritage and, when it comes down to it, the power of friendship. The Guinness ‘Stache is a great way to bring that to life in a fun way for a great cause.”

The symbol of the ‘Stache will appear alongside Guinness brand activity at bars and restaurants and on social media throughout the St. Patrick’s Day season, including in some digital content that pays homage to 200 years of mustaches in America. To spread the word about the bonds a ‘Stache can build, the brand is releasing additional digital content that will help us all reflect on the friendships we cherish – and some very recognizable Guinness fans will also get involved in spreading the word.

In addition, it’s time for the latest limited-edition Guinness Draught cans, which will hit shelves in time for St. Patrick’s Day. The ongoing series celebrates the famed Guinness ad campaigns of the 1930s and ‘50s. While it doesn’t have a mustache, the kinkajou – which we thought was a sloth at first – will be featured on this version.

To keep an eye on everything the Guinness brand is doing and to get in on the ‘Stache action, follow @GuinnessUS on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Whether you’re making a new friend or meeting an old one, having a Guinness Draught, or ordering up any other Guinness beer this St. Patrick’s Day, please respect the beer and drink responsibly.

*The Guinness Gives Back Fund is a corporate donor advised fund administered by Fairfield County’s Community Foundation. The Fund’s mission is to support local charitable organizations which are classified under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code that are aligned with the corporate focus areas of Diageo North America, Inc.

SAMUEL ADAMS NEW ENGLAND IPA

Samuel Adams Releases Juicy, Hazy New England IPA Nationwide

New England IPA Brings a Hazy Punch of Citrus Juiciness to a Hop-Forward Beer Style

New England’s leading independent craft brewer is paying homage to its roots by proudly celebrating the national release of Samuel Adams New England IPA, a refreshingly juicy and hazy IPA. Previously available only in New England, Sam Adams brewers listened to drinkers’ enthusiasm for the beer, which was the best-selling growler of 2017 at the Boston Brewery, and are responding by rolling it out across the country for craft beer lovers to enjoy.

Developed in Sam Adams’ experimental nanobrewery in Boston, New England IPA is a medium-bodied, unfiltered brew with a slight sweetness that is perfectly balanced by the unique combination of Mosaic, Citra, Galaxy, Simcoe and Cascade hops. The hops bring a big fruited pineapple and grapefruit hop character to the beer, and at 35 IBUs, the brew is neither bitter nor harsh on drinkers’ palates. At 6.8% ABV, the unfiltered IPA is a mouth-watering refresher with a smooth, clean finish that leaves drinkers wanting another sip.

Compared to West Coast IPAs, which are known for their prominent hop bitterness and light, dry mouthfeel, New England IPAs generally have a juicy and luscious flavor along with a hazy appearance and are best enjoyed fresh.

Jim Koch, Sam Adams Founder & Brewer, on New England IPA:

“New England IPAs originated in our backyard, but there are still plenty of drinkers across the country who haven’t had a chance to try this unique style yet. Our brewers worked for more than a year to develop a brew with a distinctive set of flavor characteristics that involve unusual and novel brewing practices to give our version of a New England IPA its hazy, juicy and smooth character. We can’t wait for drinkers to try it for themselves and see what the haze craze is all about!”

New England IPA Availability:

Previously only available on draft at the Samuel Adams Boston Brewery and at select bars and restaurants in the Boston area, New England IPA is now available nationwide on draft. Beginning in April, New England IPA will also be available in four-pack 16 oz. cans for a suggested retail price of $8.99 – $9.99. Prices vary by market.

The Six-Time Champion and Future Hall of Fame Boxer Recognized for His Success in the Ring and Philanthropy Outside the Ring

Hennessy, the world’s best-selling Cognac, honored six-time championship boxer and philanthropist Miguel Cotto, as the recipient of the 14th annual V.S.O.P Privilège Award. The Privilège Award recognizes Cotto’s mastery in the boxing ring, which has spanned more than 15 years – as well as his contributions and dedication to empowering the Latino community and his home of Puerto Rico.

Now in its 14th year, the Hennessy V.S.O.P Privilège Award is bestowed to individuals who are not only masters at their craft, but have achieved unparalleled levels of accomplishment and use that success to inspire and give back to their community through leadership, service and mentorship.

Cotto, who recently retired after one of the most storied careers in modern boxing, began his professional fighting in 2001 and has since risen above every obstacle, injury and adversary to leave an indelible mark on the sport – with a 41-6-0 record and winning championship belts in four weight classes. In addition to his showmanship in the ring – Cotto has shown just as much passion outside of the ring, empowering Latinos through his Fundacion El Angel de Miguel Cotto charity – where most recently he’s spent his efforts in helping the Hurricane Maria recovery across the island of his home of Puerto Rico.

“It is a true honor to be presented with the Hennessy V.S.O.P Privilège Award,” said Cotto. “Like Hennessy, I am dedicated to empowering future generations, and being recognized for these efforts is both humbling and inspiring.”

During the evening, Hennessy also announced its donation, on behalf of Miguel Cotto, to the Hispanic Federation to help support his continued efforts to rebuild and bring relief to Puerto Rico, and to the Fundacion El Angel de Miguel Cotto to support the boxer’s ongoing community efforts.
