Obvious Magazine Publisher and fashion photographer Jerris Madison dies of cancer at 50.

RIP JERRIS MADISON

R.I.P to an incredible man! JERRIS was the first person to believe in me and put me on a magazine cover fresh out of my group, he let me be creative and be me on set and that went a long way because I was a fresh 21 year old, and finding myself in fashion, he understood me and he never took no for an answer! I pray that he is at peace and proud of the work he put into his craft! cause we all are!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Jerris Madison, particularly his mom in Detroit.

Years ago, we (at 360 MAGAZINE) met JM at Men’s Fashion Week L.A. as an official media sponsor. During his presentation, our entire team was instantly fascinated by his artistic vibrations and still a fan of his fierce photographs.

Right off the bat, we offered a mini makeover. At the time, Brian Perry, our hair editor, would use shears for light grooming, a trimmer to clean up your beard/mustache, and/or hair chalk to add color. To remove the edge, we offered tequila shots alongside artisanal cocktails as you browsed the printed copies and met the publisher. Finally, we offered free tattoos of the former icon of Inked Mag and the famous tattooer Baba. It was first come, first service for a gratis quarter-sized single color figure. Yes, these were permanent drawings. And after many drinks, Jerris got his cherry popped and lost his tattooed virginity.

As Detroiters compatriots, we started to support each other. His design sense was prevalent in all of his captors. OBVIOUS MAGAZINE was among the first publications on cultural diversity to celebrate marginalized models. For us, he was and always will be a pioneer.

We literally just discovered the news of his death (from a prominent editor), and we are at a loss for words.

Growing up in a city full of dreams and disappointments, there was an unwavering connection.

On behalf of 360, we would like to dedicate our forthcoming issue to you, listing you as our Honorary Editor-in-Chief in the masthead. Rest in paradise.

Jerris Madison is a Los Angeles-based noted Fashion Photographer who is also the Publisher and Editor-In-Chief at OBVIOUS Magazine. OBVIOUS Magazine is one of the most influential magazines with a global reach of 4 million each month via social media and obviousmag.com.

Among his clients are Kevin Hart, Essence Magazine and Eva Marcille. His most recent work was featured on the Dianne Reeves 2015 Grammy win for Best Jazz Vocals Album.

Attending The Creative Circus, he graduated in 2002 with an imagery degree, focusing on the photography/art direction. His early studying would propel him into a career full of photography for mainstream media, editorial and celebrity clients.

A Detroit native, the media mogul finds his stability through family and friends. Noted for always “living his best life,” this perspective was put to the test in November of 2014 when Jerris lost his right leg to Chondrosarcoma Bone Cancer.

Not one to be slowed down, Jerris views himself as a survivor and continues to play varying roles such as Image Consultant, Social Media Expert, Film/TV Wardrobe Stylist, Motivational Speaker, as well as Photographer. He discusses his story of survival more in-depth with Johnny Gyorke on The Power of Your Voice podcast.

He hopes that his story and experience will lead him to become an author, global philanthropist, potential talk show host, and even docuseries that focuses on his life and the stories of other amputees around the world.

Editor. Fashion Chief. Photographer. Survivor! Jerris Madison, you deserve this ovation!

TSUNODA LEAVES RICCIARDO IN HIS WAKE TO WIN MIAMI GRAND PRIX OPENER

Japanese F1 star Yuki Tsunoda has declared he will ‘sleep easy’ ahead of this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix after winning a head-to-head mini jet boat battle against eight-time F1 winner Daniel Ricciardo on Miami’s Biscayne Bay.

Ahead of tomorrow’s Miami Grand Prix, Red Bull transformed the Biscayne Bay into a racetrack with Formula 1 Drivers from both Scuderia AlphaTauri and Oracle Red Bull Racing Team battling it out aboard mini jet boats to launch the (Un)Serious Race showdown.

Watch the premiere episode, featuring Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda, HERE.

The (Un)Serious Race Series is a 6-part series that follows the drivers from both Teams throughout the Grand Prix season in unexpecting, on-the-edge-of-your-seat surprising locations and formats. In the series’ first episode, Oracle Red Bull Racing’s Ricciardo and Scuderia AlphaTauri’s Tsunoda trade in their racing suits for swimmies ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.

Just over six feet long, capable of speeds up to 30 mph, the boats were built in collaboration between Torch Craft Marine and Jetstream Adventure Boats. After a fast start, Tsunoda is passed by Ricciardo mid-race but pegged back the Australian’s advantage to ultimately cross the finish line first.

Majestic Ultra-Rare 1950s Maserati Frua Spider to Appear in UK for First Time at September’s Concours of Elegance via 360 MAGAZINE.

Maserati Frua Spider

Majestic Ultra-Rare 1950s Maserati Frua Spider to Appear in UK for First Time at September’s Concours of Elegance

  • Spellbinding 1955 Maserati A6GCS Frua Spider to make UK debut at Concours of Elegance
  • Among most beautiful sports cars of all-time; first public appearance since 2010
  • Combines delicate Frua coachwork with motorsport derived mechanicals
  • One of just three examples built, and two that remain
  • World’s rarest, most spectacular vehicles will be on display from 1st to 3rd September 2023
  • The Concours of Elegance remains the UK’s top concours d’elegance and among the top three in the world
  • Tickets now on sale here: https://concoursofelegance.co.uk/tickets/

The Concours of Elegance, presented by A. Lange & Söhne, is delighted to announce that a truly majestic Maserati will grace Hampton Court Palace for 2023’s show: the sensational 1955 A6GCS Frua Spider – appearing on UK soil for the very first time.

The exceptionally rare vehicle, one of just three completed with delightful Frua coachwork, and two that survive, is widely considered to be among the most beautiful and desirable 1950s cars of all. It will star from September 1st-3rd alongside over 70 other privately owned motor cars, drawn from leading collections all over the world. 2023’s event is set to be another jaw dropping automotive celebration, all in the most stunning palace setting.

This wonderful A6GCS Frua Spider was conceived by Gugliemo ‘Mimmo’ Dei, the official Maserati dealer for Rome, who commissioned a small series of exquisitely coachbuilt cars based on the high-performance A6GCS platform. The A6GCS/53 – the ‘CS’ standing for ‘Corsa Sport’ – had originally been developed for the 1953 World Sports Car Championship, and featured motorsport-honed mechanicals. It featured a potent 170bhp in-line six-cylinder engine – initially developed by famed engine builder Columbo for Formula 2 racing – and a similarly race-bred, lightweight tubular chassis by Gilco.

Dei initially commissioned design house Carrozzeria Frua of Turin to build a single spider version; he was intent of combining the A6GCS’s race-car like performance with an elegant open top body. The resulting car was a real work of automotive art, blending impossibly delicate spider styling, delightful handling, and shockingly potent, race-car performance.

Indeed, Dei was so pleased with the results, that he requested two further Frua bodied cars be created, including the car that will be displayed at Hampton Court, chassis number 2110, which was completed in the autumn of 1956. These two cars were even more special; beneath the sensational Frua coachwork lay a specially ordered ultra-high performance dry-sump A6G/54 motor, delivering exceptional power while also revving to some 7,300rpm – remarkable for a road car in the mid-1950s.

After its completion, Chassis 2110 remained in Italy for a time before being shipped to the United States in the late 1950s, where it remained. In the early 2000s it was subject to a painstaking restoration under the supervision of Maserati aficionado Adolfo Orsi – returning it to concours winning condition, quite literally; when Chassis 2110 re-appeared at Villa d’Este in 2010, it won the Coppa d’Oro, or ‘Best in Show.’

The Frua Spider’s appearance at Hampton Court Palace will be the first time it’s been displayed in the UK, and its first public showing since that triumphant appearance on the shores of Lake Como 13 years ago.

2023’s Le Mans Centenary celebration will complement the display of 70 rare and spectacular Concours Cars at next September’s glamourous event. Outside the main display of vehicles, the Concours of Elegance will assemble around 1,000 further cars in a series of special features and displays.

James Brooks-Ward, Concours of Elegance CEO, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have secured this exceptional Maserati for our event in September. We set ourselves the task of assembling the world’s rarest, most spectacular motor cars – this Frua Spider fits the bill in some style.

“It’s a real tour de force of sports car design and engineering, with supremely elegant 1950s open-top styling that belies true race-bred performance. It’s a real privilege to show such a special car – one of just two in existence – on UK soil for the very first time.”

Further star cars will be announced in the coming months, along with further exciting categories, as we build towards September’s event.

Away from the automotive displays, Concours of Elegance 2023 will again be an occasion of pure luxury, with champagne provided by Charles Heidsieck, picnics by Fortnum & Mason, and a collection of art, jewellery and fashion displays. Presenting Partner A. Lange & Söhne will once again showcase some of its most intricate timepieces.

About the annual Concours of Elegance:

Established in 2012, the inaugural Concours of Elegance was held within Windsor Castle to mark the diamond jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign. Organised by Thorough Events, the first Concours of Elegance set a new global benchmark for a classic car concours; winning prestigious awards in the process; unheard of for a ‘start-up’ event in its first year. The second Concours of Elegance was held in 2013 to equal fanfare at the historic Royal Palace of St James in London, with the widely acclaimed third Concours set in the stunning grounds of Hampton Court Palace in September 2014, before heading to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in 2015. Only cars of the highest calibre are invited to the Concours of Elegance, from all over the world, painstakingly selected by the Concours Steering Committee; a respected team of authoritative historic car experts. A key objective of the annual Concours of Elegance is to raise significant sums for charity.

GLAAD PRESIDENT & CEO SARAH KATE ELLIS WILL SHOW ALLYSHIP FOR TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY IN CUSTOM CHRISTIAN SIRIANO FEATURING COLORS OF THE TRANSGENDER FLAG AT TIME100 GALA

Ellis is featured on the TIME100 list of the most influential people of 2023

LGBTQ advocacy organization GLAAD is excited to share fashion credits for Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD’s president & CEO, during her appearance at tonight’s TIME100TIME100 Gala. Ellis was named to the 2023 TIME100, TIME’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

As seen in the sketch below, Ellis will show her allyship for transgender people in a custom suit and pant ensemble by Christian Siriano which incorporates the colors of the transgender flag, light blue, light pink and white.

“Allies to transgender people need to be vocal, visible, and to call out extremists and media figures who are working overtime to harm transgender people and spread lies about who they are,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “As a woman and a mom, I believe every young person, including transgender youth, should be able to grow up knowing that they’ll be treated fairly and equally.”

“Working with Sarah Kate for this event was an honor. We wanted a look that was powerful and strong, but still elegant, so we created a gorgeous custom suit honoring the trans flag, which features white, pink, and blue. It’s a power suit with meaning,” said designer Christian Siriano.

Yesterday, Ellis spoke at the TIME100 Summit alongside iconic labor leader and civil rights advocate Dolores Huerta during a panel entitled ‘How to Build a Movement’ moderated by CNN”s Abby Phillip. Other LGBTQ leaders who appear on the TIME100 list this year include: Brittney Griner, Imara Jones, Sam Altman, Thom Browne, Jerrod Carmichael, Steve Lacy, Aubrey Plaza and Wolfgang Tillmans.

PRIDE EXHIBIT

MARIETTE PATHY ALLEN AND CULTURE LAB LIC ANNOUNCE PAIR OF PRIDE EXHIBITIONS, JUNE 1-JULY 30.

“BREAKING BOUNDARIES: 50 YEARS OF IMAGES” HIGHLIGHTS THE GROUNDBREAKING WORK OF MARIETTE PATHY ALLEN, FEATURING PHOTOGRAPHS OF GENDER-EXPANSIVE PEOPLE AND RELATIONSHIPS IN THE LIGHT OF EVERYDAY LIFE.

“BREAKING MORE BOUNDARIES,” A GROUP EXHIBITION RELATING TO MARIETTE PATHY ALLEN INCLUDING INVITED ARTISTS ZACKARY DRUCKER AND JESS T. DUGAN, FEATURES ART THAT DISPLAYS THE TRANSFORMATIVE VALUES AND PERCEPTIONS OF INCLUSIVENESS THAT ARE EMBODIED IN MARIETTE’S WORK.

Mariette Pathy Allen has been photographing the transgender community for almost 50 years. Through her artistic practice, she has been a pioneering force in gender consciousness, contributing to numerous cultural and academic publications about gender variance and lecturing worldwide. From June 1 to July 30 (opening on the evening of June 3 from 6-9pm), Culture Lab LIC will celebrate Mariette’s work with the exhibition Breaking Boundaries: 50 Years of Images alongside another exhibition with work by other artists inspired by, or in the spirit of, Mariette’s work titled Breaking More Boundaries. The latter will feature invited artists Zackary Drucker and Jess T. Dugan.

These exhibitions are part of Culture Lab LIC’s celebration of Pride Month and are curated by Orestes Gonzalez and Jesse Egner. There is currently an open call for submissions to Breaking More Boundaries. Interested artists should submit art that displays the transformative values and perceptions of inclusiveness that are embodied in Mariette’s work. Mediums accepted: photography, painting, sculpture, mixed media. No video or film work. Applications are open now through April 15. Submission page here. Selected artists will be announced on April 19. Jurors: Mariette Pathy Allen, Orestes Gonzalez, Jesse Egner. Culture Lab LIC is located at 5-25 46th Avenue, LIC, NY 11101. Phone: (347) 848 0030.

Most of the photographs featured in Breaking Boundaries: 50 Years of Images were made in the US. Also included within the exhibit is a section on transgender women in Cuba and Spirit Mediums (who may be women, gay men, transgender, or non-binary) in Burma and Thailand.

Books by Mariette Pathy Allen and several of the other artists will be available for purchase at the opening and throughout the exhibition.

Mariette Pathy Allen: “The importance of this exhibition in this retrograde, evil political climate, can’t be exaggerated. We hope that by presenting transgender and non-binary people as relatable, caring, and creative, we can help to dispel the misinformation and fear of gender and sexual non-conforming people. I am very grateful to the Culture Lab LIC’s Plaxall Gallery for giving me the opportunity to have this retrospective of some of my work on gender variance.

At the suggestion of Culture Lab LIC, Orestes Gonzalez, Jesse Egner, and I embarked on creating an Open Call to find other artists doing work that relates in some way to my long-term travels with gender-expansive people. I began to form this exhibition by inviting two young and highly-accomplished artists, Zackary Drucker and Jess T. Dugan, whose portraiture of strong, courageous people reminded me of some of the heroic people I photographed over the years who led the way to greater freedom of expression. I feel these artists’ love for the people they photograph is similar to mine. Orestes, Jesse, and I are waiting excitedly to see what treasures the open call brings!”

BLACKPINK SUPERSTAR JISOO UNLEASHES FIRST SINGLE ALBUM [ME] via 360 MAGAZINE.

JISOO – [ME]

JISOO, of history-making group BLACKPINK, makes her solo debut with first single album [ME]. Stream HERE via YG Entertainment / Interscope Records. The two-song set, which contains the hotly anticipated lead single “꽃(FLOWER),” amassed more than 500,000 global pre-orders within two days. Watch JISOO’s suitably floral visual for “꽃(FLOWER)” HERE.

Excitement has been building for the global superstar’s solo debut since the first teaser was posted on BLACKPINK’s social media accounts earlier this month. Since then, JISOO has revealed a steady stream of viral content including the striking cover art, glamorous teaser posters, and a pair of stunning visual films, which have amassed more than 17.5M views on YouTube. In the first, JISOO rocks a feathery ensemble while cradling a giant poppy. In the second, she is shown in silhouette against a traditional screen.

Despite being in the midst of a world tour with BLACKPINK, JISOO and her team at YG Entertainment have pulled out all the stops to make the arrival of [ME] an event. The same goes for the dreamy lead single “꽃(FLOWER).” “You can look forward to JISOO’s new musical color that she hasn’t shown before,” a YG representative says.

Momentum is definitely on JISOO’s side. BLACKPINK’s BORN PINK WORLD TOUR has sold 1.5 million tickets, a record for a K-pop girl group. After successfully completing 14 shows in North America and 10 shows in Europe, the global hitmakers are currently in Asia. Grammy award-winning Lizzo covers Elle Canada via 360 Magazine.

LIZZO – ELLE

KO Media is thrilled to unveil the February/March issue of ELLE Canada, featuring American pop sensation Lizzo front-and-centre. The singer who belts out fun-loving, body-positive tunes with her impressive classically trained voice is getting more personal and sharing her growth: “I don’t need to go on the internet to feel better about stuff anymore. I have a therapist. I have best friends. I have an amazing team around me who I can talk to. I got love.” She also tells us about trying to extend those good feelings to others through her music. “The end of lockdown [does not] signify the end of [people’s] mental-health struggles. So I wanted to make music that people could use as a soundtrack [that would help them] survive.”

In the style department, we look at how red-hot shades are all the rage, zero in on Marie-Philippe Thibault’s timeless bags, gawk at Mariah Carey’s diamond-studded Chopard collab, rummage through the allure of vintage haute couture, take a dive into runway-to-slopes winter gear and consider adding military-inspired pieces to make cold month wardrobes stand out. We also talk about a new fashion program that brings Canadian Indigenous Designers to the world stage.

We spoke to plenty of fearless on-screen queens: Sabrina Impacciatore of White Lotus fame, comic genius Sunita Mani playing opposite Ryan Reynolds in the film Spirited, beloved Canadian actor Karine Vanasse who is set to time-travel in the new Quebec drama Plan B, and Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney all grace our pages, while the one and only Pamela Anderson lets us in on her side of a tumultuous life story. We go behind the scenes with celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff, and costume designer Patricia Field tells us about her new autobiography. Then, we take a hard look at Hockey Canada’s sexual assault accusations scandal and bid adieu to Top Chef favourite Fatima Ali who died at the age of 29 but left a food-loving legacy behind.

Since there’s no time to embrace self-care like when temperatures plunge below freezing, our editors bring readers the Elle International Beauty Awards 2023 with around-the-world picks. We learn how to get the best après-ski skin, examine the trend of getting semi-permanent freckles and explore how high-end Swiss cosmetics brand La Maison Valmont is sharing the beauty love. Taking a lifestyle turn, we give tips on how to fall in love with luxuriant baths, debunk pesky nutritional myths, and offer up escapes from the cold with a sustainable Maui getaway and a cognac tasting in France. Then, we check in on some relationship advice for successfully sharing finances and offer up a romantic book guide to curl up with as the snow falls.

The February/March issue of ELLE Canada will hit stands and Apple News+ on February 13, 2023
