Letting Go Without Regret

Finding Peace in Your Senior Pet’s Final Chapter

As a pet parent, one of the hardest decisions you may face is determining when it’s time to let go of your beloved furry friend. Your pet has likely been by your side through life’s ups and downs, providing unconditional love and companionship. However, as they enter their senior years, their health and quality of life may decline, leaving you wondering if it’s best to help them pass peacefully. This article provides guidance on recognizing when euthanasia may be appropriate for your senior pet, how to prepare, and how to find closure during this difficult transition. With compassion and planning, you can help your pet leave this world feeling safe, comfortable, and surrounded by love.

Recognizing When to Let Go

As pet owners, we never want to lose our companions. However, when a pet is suffering from an incurable or progressive illness, euthanasia may be the most humane option. Signs it may be time include chronic pain, unresponsiveness to medication, lack of appetite or interest in food, significant mobility issues, labored breathing, incontinence, and lack of interest in normal activities. You know your pet best – if their spark is gone and they seem to have a poor quality of life, it may be best to consult your veterinarian. They can assess your pet’s health and provide guidance on options for care.

Preparing for the Transition

Once you’ve decided to help your pet pass on, take time to plan for their final days. Consider an at-home euthanasia service if it is available in your area – this allows your pet to transition in a familiar, comforting place. For example, if you live in an area such as Richmond, VA, some veterinarians will come to your home to perform euthanasia. Give your pet their favorite foods and extra love and affection. Invite family and friends over to say goodbye. Compile photos into a remembrance album. These steps help provide closure.

The Euthanasia Process

Euthanasia is typically quick and painless. Your vet will give an injection of an overdose of an anesthetic drug, stopping your pet’s breathing and cardiac function while they are in a deep sleep. Some visible effects include loss of consciousness within seconds, lack of heartbeat, urinary/fecal release, and light muscle twitches. These are normal and confirm that the euthanasia was effective. Many vets allow you to hold your pet during the process. Take time afterward to grieve – this is likely one of the hardest losses you will experience.

Finding Closure and Comfort

Losing a beloved pet leaves a tremendous hole. Allow yourself to grieve fully. Memorialize them with a burial service, planting a garden in their honor, framing their collar or leash, or making a donation to an animal charity. Be patient with yourself – profound grief may come in waves. Share funny stories and memories of your pet with others who knew them. Cherish photos and any paw print impressions you may have. Although the pain of loss never fully goes away, these steps help provide a sense of closure. In time, the warm memories become a comfort. Consider joining a pet loss support group, either locally or online. Talking with others experiencing similar grief can help provide validation and healing. You may also take comfort in getting another pet when the time feels right – they can never replace your former companion, but a new furry friend can bring joy back into your days.

Saying goodbye to your faithful companion is devastating. However, by focusing on their comfort, thoroughly preparing, and allowing yourself to grieve fully, you can find peace in doing what is best for your cherished pet. With time, your grief will turn to gratitude for the gift of sharing your life with such a wonderful friend.

What Is Dog Microchipping and Why Is It Important?

Microchipping is one of the most effective ways to ensure that your dog can be safely returned if they ever get lost. It’s a simple, non-invasive procedure where a small chip, about the size of a grain of rice, is implanted just under the skin. This chip holds a unique identification number that links to your contact information in a secure database. If your dog ever goes missing and is found, shelters or vets can scan the chip and quickly contact you. In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of microchipping, including how it’s designed for pet tracking and how it increases the likelihood of recovering a lost dog.

Designed for Pet Tracking

Unlike collars and tags, which can fall off or be removed, a microchip provides a permanent form of identification that stays with your dog for life. The microchip itself is passive, meaning it doesn’t need a power source to function. It only activates when a scanner is passed over it, sending the unique identification number to the scanner, which is then entered into a database to find the pet’s owner. This makes microchipping an effective and reliable solution for pet tracking.

One of the key advantages of microchipping is that it works anywhere. Whether your dog is found in a local shelter or halfway across the country, a microchip allows animal control officers, shelters, and vets to quickly identify and contact the rightful owner.

Increases Pet Recovery

One of the most significant benefits of microchipping is that it dramatically increases the chances of recovering a lost dog. Studies have shown that microchipped dogs are far more likely to be reunited with their owners than those without a chip. If your dog gets lost, shelters and animal control officers routinely scan for microchips when they find stray pets. Once your dog’s chip is scanned, they can access the contact information linked to the chip and reach out to you quickly.

To ensure that your microchip works properly and that your contact information is current, it’s essential to register your dog’s microchip. This ensures that the chip will lead to a successful reunion if your dog goes missing.

How to Find Your Pet’s Microchip Number

In some cases, you may need to locate your pet’s microchip number to verify their registration or check if it’s still active. If you’ve misplaced the paperwork or can’t recall the number, don’t worry—most veterinary offices or shelters can scan your dog to retrieve the microchip number. You can also refer to this guide on how to find your pet’s microchip number for easy steps to locate it.

Final Thoughts

Microchipping is a simple and effective way to ensure your dog’s safety. It provides a permanent, tamper-proof form of identification that increases the chances of your dog being returned to you if they ever get lost. Remember to register your dog’s microchip and keep your contact information up to date to maximize the chip’s effectiveness. By regularly checking your pet’s microchip status through the pet microchip lookup, you ensure that they remain protected throughout their life. With a microchip, you’re providing your dog with the ultimate safety net—peace of mind for you, and protection for your pet.

SELENEE + LAFW

SELENEE, THE AVANT-GARDE LUXURY FASHION BRAND, UNVEILS THE OTHERWORLDLY LABYRINTHINE “GARDEN OF FORKING PATH” COLLECTION AT LA FASHION WEEK — MARCH 16, 2025

LUXURY BRAND’S BOLD SPRING LOOKS PROVIDE EMOTIONAL RESONANCE ABOUT INDIVIDUALITY AND DREAMS

SELENEE, the avant-garde luxury fashion brand, unveils its highly anticipated collection “The Garden of Forking Path” during LA Fashion Week on March 16, 2025, 5:00 PM (PST) at Neue House Hollywood, 6121 W Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles beginning with a red carpet. The show’s fusion of fashion and visual art will provide guests with an emotional resonance about individuality and dreams, showcasing a range of unique and groundbreaking pieces for women and men.

The design of the Garden of Forking Path has been inspired by Jorge Luis Borges’ short story of the same name as well as the exploration of “Infinite Possibilities in a Maze.” The collection depicts a labyrinthine world that symbolizes the intertwining of time, space, and destiny. Through silhouette, materials, and details of the clothing, the theme of “forking paths” and “multiple possibilities” is showcased.

From classic plaid wool to flowing fabrics, SELENEE utilizes a classic gray and black palette with the combination of sharp lines and flowing curves that capture the mysterious essence of a labyrinth. A collision of vintage and modern sensibilities is evident through plaid fabrics meeting three-dimensional tailoring, reflecting the theme of time intertwining. Corseted coats, exaggerated shoulders, suit dresses, checkered pants, wool blousons, and leather sweatshirts, capes and dresses define this season’s collection. Pieces are available for purchase on the SELENEE website and range from $480.00 to $5,800.

Since its 2023 inception, the brand has been known for experimental silhouettes, and the Garden of Forking Path accelerates this with bold three-dimensional designs and exaggerated contours, exploring

the infinite possibilities of material language. This is also expressed in intricate and stunning design details such as cuffs featuring a split design, mimicking the branches of the labyrinth as well as a layered skirt that embodies the imagery of multiple intersecting spaces.

“Every path is a choice, giving rise to infinite possibilities. Los Angeles is the perfect setting for this collection as it’s not only where my dreams began, but also where many of my friends, like me, have found the courage to pursue their dreams again,” said Motong Yang, SELENEE’S Artistic Director. “This show is not only a fulfillment of my original aspirations but also a way to inspire those who once put their dreams on hold due to reality, encouraging them to take a bold step forward. It is for the dreams we once left behind and for the better versions of ourselves.”

The show integrates installation art and performance art into an interactive experience, allowing the audience to go beyond passive viewing and deeply connect with the brand’s message. SELENEE’s underlying philosophy of good design being a result of both aesthetics and responsible and sustainable practices challenges the status quo while embracing innovation.

Created from the House’s desire to explore and innovate materials for the future, Demetra is manufactured entirely in a Gucci factory in Italy using the same expertise and processes for tanning that give the material its pliable and resilient performance with a supple finish.

The new category is unveiled through a campaign with art direction and photography by Max Siedentopf. Partner with Your Pet for a Longer Life

By: Dr. Kelly Fishman, DVM, CVA, CCRT, Veterinary Advisory Member, MYOS PET

Longevity science is on the rise, but the secret to a longer, healthier life might be at your feet. Research shows that having a canine companion can extend your lifespan, speed recovery from heart attacks, and boost brain health. Today, there’s never been a better reason to make your dog your ultimate health and fitness partner.

Exercise

By teaming up with your dog for fun, challenging workouts, you can stay fit and mentally sharp. Here are two activities that’ll keep both of you moving:

Doggy Ninja Warrior-Style Agility Training: Take your dog to a playground and set up an obstacle course. This helps improve cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, and mental stimulation while allowing your bond to strengthen as you and your dog work through challenges.

“Doga” (Dog Yoga): Invite your dog into your yoga routine. Stretching with your dog isn’t just good for their joints, it’s a shared moment of relaxation that helps both of you unwind and shake off stress. Less stress is key to longevity; stretching lowers the risk of injury for both you and your furry friend.

Nutrition and Supplements

Proper nutrition is essential for both people and pets, but maintaining a healthy diet can be challenging and costly. Supplements offer a practical way to fill nutritional gaps and enhance overall well-being for both you and your furry companion. Consider these essential supplements for you and your pet:

Fortetropin’s Strength Benefits: Muscle health is a hot topic in veterinary rehabilitation and sports medicine, though you may not be familiar with the latest advancements. One standout supplement making waves is Fortetropin, a natural bioactive compound derived from fertilized raw egg yolks. Backed by clinical studies, Fortetropin found in MYOS PET supplements boost muscle protein synthesis, aiding in recovery. A study indicated that it increased muscle protein synthesis by 18% in adults. For dogs, Fortetropin accelerates muscle recovery after surgery and helps delay muscle aging, making it a game-changer for senior pets and active breeds.

The Power of Collagen: For people collagen supports healthy skin, joints, and connective tissues. For dogs, it strengthens ligaments and cartilage, reducing the risk of arthritis and joint pain. Collagen can also enhance a dog’s skin and coat, promoting a shiny, healthy appearance.

Whether you’re navigating a ninja course, doing “doga” stretching, or even adding supplements to your daily routine, you’re setting the stage for a healthier, longer life for you and your pet.

JUANA MARTIN SPRING-SUMMER 2025

The Couture house JUANA MARTÍN unveils its sixth collection, “Identidad,” a sincere tribute to authenticity and artisanal savoir-faire, in a world where fashion sometimes seems to drift away from its roots. This new proposition is a statement of style, an affirmation of her commitment to originality, highlighting the richness and uniqueness of an invaluable cultural heritage.

As the only Spanish house integrated into the official Paris Haute Couture calendar, JUANA MARTÍN continues her dedication to fashion deeply rooted in identity, culture, and tradition. Inspired by legendary figures such as Lola Flores and Carmen Amaya, Juana Martín crafts a collection that exalts the strength and passion of women, retraces the flamenco universe, and gives it a modern twist.

More than just a look into the past, “Identidad” serves as a bridge between Andalusian heritage and the future of fashion, a celebration of authenticity in an ever-changing world. Juana Martín challenges the evolution of fashion by emphasizing cultural integrity and exceptional craftsmanship. The collection embodies the soul of flamenco, an essential element of her creations, this time enhanced with radiant sequins, airy fringes, and refined cuts reminiscent of the elegance of the 1920s.

Presented today at Saut du Loup at the Palais de Tokyo, this Spring-Summer 2025 collection was elevated by the profound and moving voice of Estrella Morente, who lent her soul and talent to this unique event.
