Co-Parenting Tips For Divorcing Couples

Dads’ Resource Center offers tips for successfully co-parenting following divorce or separation.

According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), one out of every two marriages ends in divorce. Many of these marriages involve children, putting them at risk for a variety of emotional issues resulting from the separation. It is vital that the children continue to have the active involvement of both parents, and that the parents find a way to work together on their behalf.

“The impact on kids not having access to their fathers is heartbreaking,” says Dads’ Resource Center founder Dr. Joel N. Myers. “Most fathers know their children are missing out, but are unable to overcome the barriers to the system and fulfill the most fundamental role that men have – being a dad.”

How the two parents go about co-parenting makes a world of difference in the emotional health of their child. Successful co-parenting doesn’t happen by accident, but it is something that people can do with intention and effort.

The AACAP advises that children will do best when they know that both parents will remain actively engaged in their lives. They also report that the research shows children do better when parents can minimize conflict and cooperate on the child’s behalf. While many parents know that this is the healthiest route for their children, they may still find it difficult to figure out how to do it.

According to Dads’ Resource Center, there are three stages that co-parents go through following separation. The stages include family reorganization, co-parenting, and personal growth. In family reorganization, decisions are made about where the children will be and when and how they will be supported. The co-parenting stage is where decisions will be made about how to make it all work. Finally, the personal growth stage is where parents have finally established a working relationship without conflict, which brings relief to their children. The longer that parents remain stuck in the re-organization and co-parenting stages, the more the children are negatively impacted.

It’s important that parents make a concerted effort to learn how to co-parent while separated. Here are some tips for how parents can successfully co-parent, provided by Dads’ Resource Center:

  • Both parents need to commit to always doing what is best for their children, which includes making sure both parents have the access needed to maintain an active and meaningful relationship with them. This extends to family on both sides.
  • Communication is vital. Mom and dad should be able to work out the logistics in a patient and calm manner and make a habit of providing updates on how the children are doing – in school, about health-related matters, how they are doing developmentally, and what is going on generally in their lives.
  • Both parents need to practice forgiveness. For the sake of their children, mom and dad need to let the past be in the past and treat one another with acceptance and compassion.
  • Separated parents should educate themselves about the impact that divorce has on children, to help minimize the negative consequences. If they are having a difficult time collaboratively co-parenting parents should find support from family, friends, churches or seek professional help.
  • However, parents should not allow themselves to become overly reliant on family courts and child welfare services to manage their inability to work together. Doing so only enables them in not moving on, and if they don’t move on their children can’t either.

“Parenting is not a one-person job,” added Jeff Steiner, executive director of the Dads’ Resource Center. “Even in a separated family, both parents should view the other parent as an equal partner in the upbringing of their children. This means they must be adaptable and flexible and treat one another with grace and compassion.”

Dads’ Resource Center has been established to benefit children of separated or divorced parents by advocating the importance of fathers having adequate opportunities to fulfill their role of fatherhood. The group helps get information regarding the issues out to the public and work with fathers to help make improvements.

The Best Ways to Have Family Fun During a Lockdown

By: Marie Miguel

It hasn’t been easy trying to navigate everything during the pandemic. The tragic loss of life has been difficult for many families around the world. It’s also been hard adjusting to not being able to go out and do things that you normally like to do. If you’re raising kids, then you might feel as if you’re going stir crazy being stuck inside together with your family.

The kids want to be able to do something fun, but you’re going through another lockdown. What are your best options to keep everyone occupied and happy? Keep reading to learn about the best ways to have family fun during a lockdown. This might give you a few good ideas that will make your time spent together at home a lot more entertaining.

Play Board Games

Have you sat down as a family to play a board game recently? This is a tried and true family activity that has helped many families bond over the years. There are a wide variety of different board games out there that you can try out. You just need to find one that the entire family can enjoy and understand.

If you have younger children, then you might wish to pick a board game that is a bit on the easier side. If you’re playing with older kids, then you might be fine playing more complex games such as Trivial Pursuit. Whether you’re going to play Monopoly together or if you want to have a rousing game of Scrabble, it’ll be a good time. It’s a fun way to pass the time that you should take advantage of.

Play Video Games

What if your kids aren’t quite so into old-school board games? You could always try sitting down to play video games with them. Even if you don’t play a lot of video games, it’ll be fun to interact with your kids. There are all sorts of good family-friendly titles that you can choose from. The Nintendo Switch is a particularly good console choice if you’re looking for games that will be fun for kids (and adults) of all ages.

You can start a little family rivalry in Mario Kart. Or you can work together to try to solve puzzles in games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There are hundreds of games that you could choose to play, but the important thing is to enjoy your time with your kids. Games can be magical because they can help you to escape when you need to the most.

Arts & Crafts

Sitting down and doing arts & crafts with your kids could also be a good time. Sometimes it’s nice to just take it easy and try to create something artistic as a family. There are all sorts of little art projects you could take on if you’re so inclined. Create decorations for various holidays or help to teach your kids how to paint.

Many have rediscovered their love of art during the pandemic. This could be a good weekend activity that you can enjoy with your significant other and your kids. You’ll simply need to ensure that you have the materials for whatever art project you’re interested in. You’ll be able to admire the results of your work when you’re finished, too.

Listen to Music

What about just relaxing in the living room as a family and listening to music? Yes, sometimes it’s hard to agree on what to listen to when everyone in the family has different tastes in music. However, it can still be fun to share your favorites with your family. Some families have decided to let each kid pick one record, and they will sit down to listen to all of them on a special music day each weekend.

Another idea is to share your love of music by teaching your kids how to play instruments. If you’re a musician, then this could be a good time. Of course, your kids will need to be interested in music or it might not be so fun for them. Music is powerful, and it can help you have a great time even when you’re stuck inside during a lockdown.

Watch Family-Friendly Shows

Most families will spend copious amounts of time watching shows on Netflix or Disney Plus during the pandemic. Your family might wind up being no different. That doesn’t mean that watching some great shows with your family won’t be a valuable experience. You can enjoy movies and all sorts of other entertainment media together.

With so much great content to watch, it’ll be easy to find a new movie to enjoy with your family each weekend. Make some popcorn and sit down in the living room to watch something together. It gives you something to look forward to as a family. Turning it into a fun occasion with snacks and mood lighting should be a good time.

Cook Together

Have you thought about cooking together? Depending on how you feel about cooking, this might sound like a great idea or a terrible one. Cooking can be a lot of fun when you approach things with the proper attitude. It can also be valuable to teach your kids how to cook early on in life.

You can make simple dishes together, and the kids will enjoy it. If you want to make things really easy, you can have kids help you with baking. When you’re making cookies it’ll be easy to let the kids cut out the cookie shapes with cookie cutters. Family cooking time could become a staple in your household even once the lockdown is finished.

Remember That You’re Never Alone

Remember that you’re never alone when you’re starting to feel depressed or anxious. These are trying times, and you can reach out if you feel like you need help. BetterHelp has some awesome resources on parenting, which can help you get through difficult times. Whether you need parenting advice or if you just need to talk to someone about the stress that you’re experiencing, BetterHelp can assist you in the process of putting things into perspective.

Don’t hesitate to contact an online therapist if you’re feeling uneasy about things in life. Online therapy has helped many people to work through significant problems. It’s easy to talk to a therapist from the comfort of home, and it’s great that this therapy option is so affordable. Look into things today if you’ve been having a tough time and would like to start feeling better.

Tik Tok × Covid-19

With 732 million users worldwide, TikTok, a trending video-sharing platform, is one of today’s most popular social media networks. During the lockdown, the app’s short and amusing videos drew a lot of attention, but it was not long before cybercriminals took advantage of TikTok’s fame for their own gain.

According to the data presented by the Atlas VPN team, TikTok was the most impersonated app in Covid-19 related to Android app scams in the first half of 2021. There were a total of 88 TikTok copy-cat apps detected spreading FakeApp malware.

Malicious applications impersonating organizations that give out free laptops to students were also highly prevalent. There were 37 bogus Android laptop registration applications detected in H1 2021.

The third spot on the list is occupied by apps impersonating vaccine registration channels. Overall, 14 such malicious applications were found in the first half of this year. 360 Magazine is surprised to see this research about Tik Tok, which is widely used internationally.

Fake apps often imitate the login pages of the official apps to harvest users’ credentials and other personal data. They are typically distributed through third-party app stores, but on occasion, fake apps make it to the official Google Play store as well.

Ruth Cizynski, the cybersecurity researcher and writer at Atlas VPN, gives advice on how to recognize fake applications: “What makes fake apps so dangerous is that they are typically designed to look exactly like an official app, making them hard to spot. The best defense consumers have against falling prey to fake app downloads is knowing what to look out for. Reading the apps reviews, taking some time to research the developers, and reading the permissions agreement are just some of the things consumers should do before proceeding with an app.”

Apart from fake apps, cybercriminals have launched multiple other cyberattacks leveraging the global pandemic, including phishing campaigns, malicious URLs, as well as malware. While cyberattacks were widespread across the world, some countries suffered more than others. In total, 35.9% of such threats affected the United States in the first half of 2021. Other highly affected countries include Germany (18.9%), Colombia (10.5%), Italy (3%), and Spain (2.5%).

Pandemic Mental Health with Dr. Friedberg

On Saturday, September 25, Dr. Ahron Friedberg, distinguished Manhattan and Sag Harbor psychiatrist and resident, held a reading and discussion of his book, Through a Screen Darkly: Psychoanalytic Reflections During the Pandemic, in the home of renowned fellow psychiatrist and Hamptons resident, Dr. Mirjana Blokar. Attendees and discussion participants included prestigious neuroscientist, Dr. Heather Berlin, among numerous Mount Sinai colleagues and friends.

Dr. Friedberg explains, “The book shows that, of necessity, people can learn to adapt, even in the most difficult circumstances. Even though we can only see “darkly” we can call on resources we do have, in addition to those we can acquire to retain our sense of dignity and purpose. Through a Screen Darkly is a time capsule of how we struggled – and are continuing to navigate – a disease we do not fully understand.”

The book addresses the pandemic in phases, including I) Pandemic, II) Venturing Out, III) The New Normal, and IV) Life Simplified. The essays provide perspective on several subjects relating to mental health, including parenting, elder care, work life (losing jobs, finding jobs, choosing new work, commuting), loneliness, children, and dating. Through a Screen Darkly offers practical examples of how patients coped with these conditions and (in many cases) found the resilience to get past them.

“The ultimate goal is to bolster your resilience,” states Dr. Friedberg. “In my experience counseling patients through the pandemic, I found that they had greater capacity for resilience than they realized. Deploying this resilience was their pathway to successfully managing their mental health.”

In addition to Through a Screen Darkly, Dr. Friedberg has also written Flashing Seven: Seven Essential Skills for Living and Leading, co-authored with Dr. Jack Hischowitz, Clinical Professor at Mount Sinai, Between Us, A Father and Son Speak, co-authored with his father, Dr. Eugene Friedberg, and Psychotherapy and Personal Change; Two Minds in a Mirror, also written with Dr. Sandra Sherman.
Through a Screen Darkly is available for purchase at amazon.com.

Ferraro’s White Truffle Festival

White truffle season comes to Ferraro’s Italian Restaurant & Wine Bar beginning October 1 through December 31. Ferraro’s announces nightly truffle specials and Nebbiolo wine pairing during which guests will savor one of the season’s most indulgent ingredients—Italian white truffles.
Italian white truffles are widely regarded as the most exquisite of all truffles. Their season runs typically from late October to late December. Truffles grow in the wild, where they enjoy a symbiotic relationship with mature oak, beech and hazelnut trees, from which they draw carbohydrates while growing underground. For this reason, truffles cannot be cultivated. That fact, together with their unmistakably rich and umami-filled flavor, makes truffles a universally rare and sought-after ingredient.
360 Magazine is excited to taste this season’s truffles. To make reservations, please call (702) 364-5300. The full menu follows:

How Sleep Apnea Affects Mental Health and What You Can Do About It

You might not know that you have sleep apnea. However, your partner can probably tell.

This rule holds even if they don’t kick you during the night to get you to stop snoring. The sleep disturbances caused by this disorder can impact your mood, turning normally pleasant people into snarling grumps. Here’s how sleep apnea affects mental health and what you can do about it.

1. It Makes You Edgier

Do you find yourself snapping at your spouse or children when they ask you an innocent question? Undiagnosed sleep apnea can make you irritable and edgy.

Research shows that sleep-deprived individuals report an increase in negative emotions like anger and a decrease in positive ones. Further complicating the issue is how mood disorders such as mild depression can often disrupt sleep patterns. The combination results in a vicious cycle, with sleeplessness increasing depressive symptoms that only spur further insomnia.

Talk to your doctor if possible. While you don’t want to rely on prescription sleep aids, a short-term course can help you reset your cycles. Over-the-counter aids such as Benadryl also assist some in getting their Zzz’s. A doctor can also help by informing you of what other treatment options exist outside of medication. Many people report holistic methods work well for them. Whatever the case, your mood should improve once you get sufficient rest.

2. It Disrupts Focus

Remember the last time your alarm didn’t wake you up in time for work in the morning? Chances are, you felt “off” the remainder of the day.

Sleep apnea causes you to stop breathing multiple times while you sleep. You might not remember waking up from this phenomenon — but your body absorbs the effects as if you tossed and turned all night. The impact on your cognitive abilities remains the same.

You might not even know if you have the disorder. Approximately 80% of those with severe to moderate sleep apnea remain undiagnosed. The process involves undergoing a sleep study, which isn’t without complicating factors. Many folks find it challenging to sleep with wires taped hither and yon, leading to many inconclusive and false-negative results.

However, you might feel the effects in the workplace. Many people with sleep apnea report feeling tired all day despite getting what they thought was a full night of sleep. Pay close attention to the way you feel throughout the day at work and elsewhere. If you find that your normally detail-oriented self starts missing zeroes on budget reports, talk to your doctor.

3. It Could Spur Compulsive Overeating

Your body contains two stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline spurs your initial fight-or-flight response, and cortisol takes over when stress becomes long-term, preparing your body for a prolonged onslaught. The problem is, you can’t escape modern stressors like unpaid debt the way early humans outran hungry lions.

As a result, excess cortisol production prepares you for physical exertion that never comes. This hormone makes you crave foods high in fat and calories for lasting energy — but you never burn it off. The result is unwanted pounds that stress you out even more.

4. It Can Cause Drowsy Driving

Did you know that remaining awake for more than 18 hours impairs your driving ability as much as a blood alcohol content of 0.05%? That’s right — drowsy driving is as dangerous as taking the wheel when intoxicated.

Your youth and good health won’t protect you from an auto accident. A wreck causing ongoing health issues, such as those resulting in traumatic brain injury (TBI), can cause severe financial hardship, given the lack of single-payer coverage in the United States. You could find yourself out of a job at a time when you need your employer-sponsored health insurance more than ever and end up buried in medical debt.

Pay attention if you notice that you frequently arrive at home or work with little recollection of how you got there other than knowing you must have driven. Everyone zones out behind the wheel occasionally, but you should call your doctor if it happens all the time.

5. It Can Impact Your Close Relationships

Even if you can blame your irritable mood on sleep apnea and the resulting disruption, knowing the reason doesn’t spare your family the grief of living with a grump. If left untreated, the associated behavioral changes could damage your closest relationships.

Therefore, if you won’t seek help for yourself, do so for the people you love. Living with or even just having a close with relationship with someone who is moody and down all the time can really take a toll on your friends and family, especially if they are trying their best to help you and be supportive but are met with hostility. This kind of dynamic can eventually lead to people distancing themselves from you.

You’ll likely discover that you will personally feel happier than ever too once you address the underlying cause of your irritability. You might even live longer — loneliness increases all-cause mortality.

Methods of Treating Sleep Apnea

What should you expect when you speak with your doctor? You have several treatment options to explore:

  • CPAP: A CPAP machine is the gold standard in treating diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea. It forces your airway open, making breathing possible. If you have health insurance, your carrier will probably cover the cost of your device, minus any copays and deductibles.
  • Surgery: Some people can’t tolerate the mask that the CPAP device requires. In such cases, doctors may perform surgery to remove excess tissue from your soft palate and stabilize your upper airway.
  • Holistic Methods: Many people find that shedding excess weight helps improve sleep apnea symptoms. Elevating your head on numerous pillows can keep tissue from blocking your airways and disrupting your slumber.

Sleep Apnea Can Affect Mental Health — Talk to a Doctor if You’re Suffering

Sleep apnea can adversely impact your mental health. Please talk to your doctor about your treatment options so you can feel better.

Reducing Side Effects from Cannabis with a Smartphone App

Have you ever experienced side effects from cannabis? Common cannabis side effects include paranoia, dizziness, red eyes, cottonmouth, and more. In this article, we will discuss side effects from cannabis and explore how you can use the Jointly app to mitigate or eliminate them.

Purposefully Consume Cannabis to Eliminate Side Effects

Weed is about more than getting high. For example, have you ever used cannabis to help you sleep at night? What about to stimulate your appetite?

The cannabis plant produces a variety of compounds that you can help you achieve your wellness goals. Whether you want to sleep better, eat more, replace other substances, melt into your couch at the end of a long day, or energize and uplift your mind, there is a cannabis product that is perfect for that goal. And the Jointly app can help you find it.

Jointly is a new cannabis wellness app that helps people discover purposeful cannabis consumption so they can achieve their wellness goals with cannabis and CBD. On the Jointly app, you can find new cannabis products, rate products based on how well they helped you achieve your goals, and track and optimize your cannabis consumption so that you can enjoy your ideal experience every time.

To enjoy your ideal experience every time, you need to figure out how to eliminate or mitigate adverse side effects from cannabis.

How the Jointly App Improves Your Cannabis Experience

Have you ever noticed that the same cannabis product can produce different effects (or side effects) from one day to the next? Or that a weed strain that consistently stimulates your mind has a sedating effect on your friend? How is it possible that the same product has such varied effects?

Cannabis experts believe that there are at least 15 factors that can impact your cannabis experience. These factors include your dose, your hydration level, how much sleep you got the night before, whether you are alone or with friends, whether you are using cannabis in the morning or at night, and more.

When you track your cannabis consumption on the Jointly app, you can report on these 15 factors to determine how each factor impacts your experience. Over time, the Jointly app will use your reports to make suggestions that will help you get more consistent results and eliminate adverse side effects from cannabis.

Common Side Effects of Weed

Marijuana side effects include:

Click for a deep dive into each side effect, the science of what causes this side effect, and special tips on how to eliminate it or mitigate it.

How Does the Jointly App Help You Eliminate Marijuana Side Effects?

Cannabis can help you sleep better, eat more, relax after a long day at work, stimulate and uplift your mind, enhance your creativity and focus, and reduce mild daily stress. Purposeful cannabis consumption is a highly effective wellness tool that can help people improve their health and wellbeing.

However, some people might experience adverse side effects when using cannabis to achieve their wellness goals. The Jointly app can help you mitigate these side effects by teaching you how to turn the dials on the 15 factors that can impact your cannabis experience.

For example, perhaps you will notice that when you consume cannabis after a night of poor sleep, you are more likely to experience anxiety and paranoia from weed. Or you may find that when you exercise before, during, or after consuming cannabis, you don’t experience any disorientation or coordination issues from weed.

Does Smoking Weed Have Side Effects? Do Edibles Have Side Effects?

Most marijuana side effects are caused by THC. So, any cannabis product that contains THC may cause these side effects.

However, different weed ingestion methods have different pharmacokinetics, meaning that different ingestion methods can produce distinct effects and side effects, and even objective measures like levels of THC in the blood.

When you eat an edible, you digest it. As a result, the THC goes through first-pass metabolism in your liver, where it is converted into a more potent compound: 11-OH-THC. This metabolite has greater and longer-lasting psychoactive effects, which may cause you to experience greater or longer lasting side effects.

In short, different ingestion methods may produce different side effects, but any product with THC has the potential to cause adverse side effects for some individuals. You should choose the ingestion method that is best suited for your wellness goals.

Does CBD Have Side Effects?

While the side effects of CBD are much milder than marijuana side effects, there are still some potential side effects to watch out for. Some people have reported experiencing gastrointestinal distress, dry mouth, reduced appetite, drowsiness, and fatigue after using CBD.

How to Mitigate Side Effects from Cannabis

Here are some general suggestions on how to mitigate side effects from cannabis, and then we will explore some specific suggestions about how to fix cottonmouth.

Try a new product

Different cannabis products will contain different chemical compounds like cannabinoids and terpenes, which may exert distinct effects. Use Jointly’s Product Finder to discover new top-rated products.

Try a new ingestion method

Additionally, the way you ingest a product will change how it affects you. Smoking a joint of cannabis flower may produce slightly different effects from vaporizing it, although both ingestion methods involve heating cannabis and inhaling the active compounds.

Each ingestion method has its own advantages and may produce different effects or side effects. To learn how different weed ingestion methods produce different effects, read our article The Best Way to Take Cannabis for Wellness Purposes.

Add in a companion food

Did you know that weed companion foods can enhance your cannabis experience in different ways? Mangoes, dark chocolate, green tea, and thyme are all weed companion foods. Chemical compounds in these foods may alter your cannabis experience, and potentially mitigate adverse side effects like drowsiness.

To learn about these foods and how to add them into your cannabis wellness routine, check out our article Do These Foods Get You Higher?

Find your minimum effective dose

Most adverse side effects from cannabis are caused by ingesting too high of a dose of THC. While you cannot die from ingesting too much cannabis, a THC overdose is a real risk. The single most effective way to mitigate side effects is to microdose and titrate up your dose until you find the minimum effective dose of cannabis to get the effect you want.

Turn the dials on 15 factors

According to cannabis experts, there are at least 15 factors that can impact your cannabis experience and play a major role in whether a cannabis product is giving you the feeling you want, or producing adverse side effects like cottonmouth. These 15 factors include your dose, the time of day you ingest, how much sleep you got the night before, and more.

The Jointly app lets you to track the 15 factors that can impact your cannabis experience. As you optimize how you consume cannabis, your favorite cannabis products will perform better for you.

There are 976 schools in 15 states currently receiving 492,839 books. These books primarily focus on subjects that provide children with the tools necessary to be successful throughout their lives. Books emphasizing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), as well as titles that provide both entertainment and enrichment, will be welcoming students back-to-school this year!

As background, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, with our long-time ally The UPS Store, Inc., launched the Toys for Tots Literacy Program in 2008, a year-round initiative to support less fortunate children across our nation’s communities. The program offers the nation’s most economically disadvantaged children the ability to compete academically and to succeed in life by providing them direct access to books and educational resources that enhance their ability to read and communicate effectively. This program not only brings the joy of reading to these children, but also serves as an important tool in breaking the cycle of poverty. Since its inception, the generosity of the 5,000 The UPS Store locations and their communities have contributed over $7.5 million and assisted Toys for Tots in distributing over 44 million books.

The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, is an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity which was created at the behest of the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program began in 1947 in Los Angeles, and since it first National Campaign in 1948 has distributed more than 604 million toys, games, and books to 272 million children.

The UPS Store® locations are independently owned and operated by franchisees of The UPS Store, Inc. (although one or more may be company owned) in the USA and by its master licensee and its franchisees in Canada. Products, services, prices and hours of operation may vary by location.

Are Supersets Good for Building Upper Body Strength?

Supersets are a type of workout that is designed to increase the amount of sets you do for an exercise without resting in between sets. For example, if you’re doing a push-up, you might push your way up and then grab weights on the floor to do some bicep curls.

The goal of supersetting is to get more work done in less time by minimizing rest periods. And because of this, supersets are often used for building muscle mass.

So what’s the verdict? Are supersets good for building upper body strength? Read on to find out!

The truth about supersets for strength gains

Some say that supersets are great for adding intensity to your workout if done correctly, but others say that supersets don’t show any advantage over regular sets. As with most workouts, there are no absolutes in the strength training field. You can add a superset to your workout, and if you go about it the wrong way, it can be counterproductive.

It’s not that supersets can’t be an effective addition to your routine, it’s that you should be careful going about it. And you definitely need to have a plan in mind.

One of the biggest misconceptions about supersets is that they show no improvement in strength, but as with all exercise protocols, this is not the case. The truth is that high-intensity workouts, like chest and tricep supersets, will show a greater increase in strength gains than low-intensity ones.

You can do either type of workout in a split set (doing a high-intensity set, followed by a low-intensity set), or you can do a full superset (one high-intensity set followed by a low-intensity set). Either way, you’re going to see a big difference in your performance. The question is, how can you pick the right superset workouts?

This is where it gets a bit complicated. The first thing you need to know is that when training muscle with high intensity, the way you perform your superset is going to affect the way you build strength.

The problem with doing this is that you tend to go all-out on your first set and then use the low-intensity set as a warm-up. This is a good way to help you get accustomed to the high-intensity energy, but this isn’t the best way to do supersets.

The best way to do supersets is to increase your volume over a few weeks. When you do a high-intensity set, it’s best to keep your reps at about 20-25 (but if you’re new to the higher rep range, go down a notch or two). The low-intensity set will be low reps, but you’ll still be using a fair amount of intensity (probably about 40-60%) to drive your muscles to fatigue.

How Do You Do Supersets Right?

When you’re looking at a program for doing supersets, the program should focus on progressing slowly. The higher you go in the weight category, the more you’ll want to include in your supersets, but this is very difficult to measure.

The best way to do a superset is to increase the weights slowly, so you’re not burning out your nervous system. The good thing about doing supersets is that the high-intensity set will be done fast, so you can have more time for the low-intensity set.

This is a good way to add more intensity to your routine without adding a lot of volume.

Beginner mistakes with supersets

Use of too few sets: It’s better to use more sets than too few to reap the benefits of supersets. When you use a limited number of sets, you are less likely to get adequate rest between sets.

Severely Limited Rest Periods: Being able to rest for 45 seconds or more between sets in some programs can give you a significant amount of time to recover. In these programs, however, you are going to have to do one “one rep max” set and then rest. You won’t have that recovery time between sets.

Inadequate stretching: It’s good to stretch after your supersets, and post-workout stretching is generally recommended over pre-workout stretching. However, if you’re too sore to stretch at all, it’s a sign you’ve done something wrong.

With supersets, you can easily end up training to failure or to exhaustion. As soon as your heart rate drops below the anaerobic threshold, your muscles will stop working effectively and you will have to stop the exercise.

The problem is that it’s hard to recover from this kind of workout. When you train to failure, you aren’t able to recover from it because you are going to be unable to get into the zone for the next exercise.

The Bottom Line

Super sets are an awesome way to add intensity to your workouts. If done properly, you can dramatically increase your strength and power in the gym, but you must remember that this is a short-term benefit. With hard workouts, you will be forced to give your body the rest it needs to heal and rebuild.

You have to balance this short-term benefit against long-term goals and your training volume. If you’re trying to increase your strength, you want to stick to a structured program that can safely help you to that end. Supersets won’t get you there, but they will help get you started.
