Greens Restaurant celebrates its 40th year of nourishing the Bay Area community and visitors from around the world. Through the march of generations and amidst an ever-changing San Francisco dining scene, Greens Restaurant has remained steadfast in its original mission of celebrating vegetables with an intentional practice of being of service, an important value system set forth by its founders, the San Francisco Zen Center. Focusing on six important values of Generosity, Patience, Virtue, Energy, Focus, and Connection, Greens Restaurant has partnered with six acclaimed Bay Area chefs to serve guests in a special dinner series that will take place once a month starting this July.

The Greens 40th Anniversary Acclaimed Chef Dinner Series features an unprecedented lineup of renowned chefs, including: Alice Waters (Chez Panisse), Reem Assil (Reem’s California), Tanya Holland (Brown Sugar Kitchen), Suzette Gresham (Acquerello), Pam Mazzola (Prospect), and Kim Alter (Nightbird). These six Bay Area chefs will each design a vegetarian four-course prix fixe meal inspired by historic menus archived from the last four decades of Greens. Each menu will be offered at $85 per person with optional wine or beverage pairings. Tickets can be purchased via greensrestaurant.com. Details of the menus, the underlying core values and themes, and the connection between Greens and the guest chefs will be announced in advance of each monthly dinner.

Along with the milestone 40th Anniversary, Greens’ dinner series celebrates the meaningful ecosystem of interconnectedness — uniting a vital community network of diners, chefs, farmers, and artisanal purveyors from the Bay and regional lands. The kinship of land, food, and people has been the very foundation of Greens since 1979 and will be honorably showcased at each forthcoming 40th anniversary guest chef dinner.

Tuesday, July 9, 2019 — Reem Assil — Reem’s California

In 2010, the dream of Reem’s was born at the doorstep of a street corner bakery in Beirut, Lebanon. The scent of za’atar, yeasted bread, and sweet orange blossom syrup right out of the oven and the sounds of laughter and chatter in Arabic all around Reem Assil conjured up memories of her childhood and yearning to create home and community in the United States. Witnessing the life inside those bakery doors despite the political turbulence outside of them is when she realized her people are masters of bread and hospitality: the lifeline of their history and what has kept them resilient over many generations despite colonization, war, drought, and famine in the Arab world. In the fall of 2016, Reem Assil won the national OpenTable contest to fund their dream restaurant, and six months later, they opened their first brick & mortar location in the heart of Fruitvale in one of the most diverse communities in Oakland. Since then, Reem has garnered an array of top accolades, including being named a James Beard semifinalist in the Best Chef: West in 2018 and 2019, Thrillist’s “2018 Chef of the Year,” San Francisco Magazine’s “2018 Chef of the Year,” San Francisco Chronicle’s “2017 Rising Star Chef,” and most recently, Star Chefs “Rising Star Chef 2019.” Reem’s California was also named one of Food & Wine’s “2018 Top 10 Restaurants of the Year.”

Monday, August 5, 2019 — Alice Waters — Chez Panisse

Alice Waters is a chef, author, food activist, and the founder and owner of Chez Panisse Restaurant in Berkeley, California. She has been a champion of local sustainable agriculture for over four decades. In 1995, she founded the Edible Schoolyard Project, which advocates for a free school lunch for all children and a sustainable food curriculum in every public school. She has been Vice President of Slow Food International since 2002. Her honors include election as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007; the Harvard Medical School’s Global Environmental Citizen Award, which she shared with Kofi Annan in 2008; and her induction into the French Legion of Honor in 2010. In 2015, she was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Obama, proving that eating is a political act, and that the table is a powerful means to social justice and positive change. Alice is the author of 16 books including her critically acclaimed memoir, Coming to My Senses: The Making of a Counterculture Cook, The New York Times bestsellers The Art of Simple Food I & II, and The Edible Schoolyard: A Universal Idea.

Wednesday, September 11, 2019 — Suzette Gresham — Acquerello

Acquerello’s co-owner and Executive Chef, Suzette Gresham, has led an incredibly accomplished career, receiving countless awards and accolades. Her achievements, however, have never deterred her from the ultimate goal as a chef — to make her guests happy. Gresham’s enthusiasm in the kitchen and tenacious personality led to the opening of Acquerello with business partner Giancarlo Paterlini in July 1989. Since that time, Acquerello has held a spot every year on the San Francisco Chronicle’s Top 100 Bay Area Restaurant List. The restaurant received its first Michelin star in 2007, and was awarded a second star in 2014. Today, Gresham is known as a pioneer in the culinary industry and has become one of the most influential chefs in the world of Italian fine dining. Her understated yet elegant approach to traditional Italian dishes showcases her culinary philosophy; that simplicity and preserving the integrity of food speaks volumes.

October 7, 2019 — Kim Alter — Nightbird

Kim Alter is the driving force behind Nightbird and Linden Room, which she opened August 2016 in the bustling Hayes Valley neighborhood as one of the most highly anticipated restaurants of the year. Nightbird, named for Alter’s love of owls, embraces community and diversity, and consistently delivers a hospitable, whimsical experience. Alter showcases the Bay Area’s bounty of produce with layered, flavorful dishes reflecting her commitment to technique, whole animal cooking, and unyielding support of the region’s farmers. Alter earned a Food & Wine Magazine nomination for People’s Best Chef in 2012 and 2013. In 2018, Alter was a James Beard Award semifinalist for “Best Chef: West.” Alter formerly worked with the Daniel Patterson Group for three years at the helm of kitchens such as Haven and Plum in Oakland, California. Prior to that, she worked in some of the Bay Area’s most notable restaurants such as Manresa (three-star Michelin), Aqua (two-star Michelin), and Acquerello (two-star Michelin). Alter won the title of “Best New Chef” from Oakland Magazine while at Haven, which was also named “Best New Restaurant” under her direction and awarded three stars from San Francisco Magazine.

Monday, November 4, 2019 — Tanya Holland — Brown Sugar Kitchen

Known for her inventive take on modern soul food, as well as comfort classics, Executive Chef Tanya Holland is the owner of Brown Sugar Kitchen. Chef Holland is the author of the Brown Sugar Kitchen Cookbook and New Soul Cooking; was the host and soul food expert on the television series Melting Pot; and competed on the fifteenth season of Top Chef. Holland appeared as a special guest on countless national television shows including the Today Show, Vh1’s Soul Cities, Sarah Moulton’s Cooking Live, Ready, Set, Cook! The Wayne Brady Show, and has been featured in articles in The New York Times, O The Oprah Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Travel & Leisure, and Sunset just to name a few. Holland shares her love of modern Southern fare by bringing home her passion for soul food and the amazing experiences shared through the act of enjoying a meal with family and friends.

Wednesday, December 11, 2019 — Pam Mazzola — Prospect

Hailing from Denver where she cooked in many of the city’s top kitchens, Pam Mazzola first joined Chef Nancy Oakes at San Francisco’s L’Avenue in 1988. Their meeting launched a friendship and culinary partnership that has endured for over twenty years. Mazzola was part of the opening staff of Boulevard and is a co-author with Oakes on the James Beard Award-nominated Boulevard Cookbook. Prospect is a collaboration of Chef Nancy Oakes, Pam Mazzola, and Kathy King from Boulevard Restaurant. As chef/partner in Prospect, Mazzola works closely with the team, guiding the overall direction of the restaurant with a focus on menu development. Located at the base of the Infinity Towers in downtown San Francisco, Prospect features exceptional contemporary American cuisine with local, sustainable, and organic ingredients while hosting diners in a warm and modern urban environment with high service standards.

Greens Restaurant pioneered vegetarian cooking and paved the way for establishing it as a cuisine in America. In 1979, the San Francisco Zen Center opened Greens to provide an opportunity for Zen students to work together and extend their practice to the workplace. For many years, the entire staff at Greens were Zen students. Founding Chef of Greens, Deborah Madison, was a student at Zen Center for 18 years where she held a host of kitchen positions. In 1981, Annie Somerville joined the restaurant and trained with Madison. Somerville became Executive Chef in 1985, and has since continued to work closely with local growers, cheesemakers, and purveyors, to serve and celebrate seasons and their bounty. San Francisco Zen Center’s Green Gulch Farm provides the restaurant with organic produce year-round from its farm and garden. Green Gulch Farm has been a model of sustainable organic farming and gardening.

Occupying a former Army warehouse in Fort Mason, the restaurant is adorned with floor to ceiling windows and quintessential views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin headlands and The Marina. The space was constructed by carpenters from the Zen Center, including lead designer Paul Discoe, an ordained Zen Buddhist priest, using reclaimed wood and recycled material. Central to the familiar dining room are works by local Bay Area artists: a curving three-ton, tour de force of woodcarving, redwood installation by J.B. Blunk, original landscapes hanging on the walls by painter Willard Dixon, and specially made service areas and entryway by designer Jason Lees.

Rising Isreal Tourism

Israel Tourism continues to rise, as more travelers are choosing the country as their next travel destination. In 2019 so far, the country has seen a total of 1.9 million visitors, compared with 1.75 million during the same period in 2018. This past May, 440,000 tourists entered Israel, marking an increase of 11.3% over the previous year, and a 26.8% increase when compared with May 2017.

“The May 2019 tourism statistics continue the consistent upward momentum and record-breaking trend in incoming tourism to Israel,” stated Tourism Minister Yariv Levin

Below are some of the latest hospitality updates in Israel:

NEW DEVELOPMENTS & RENOVATIONS:

  • Dan Caesarea Unveils Renovations: After eight months of renovations, the Dan Caesarea Hotel has reopened. The hotel underwent a NIS 80 million renovation to attract a younger generation, upgrading 116 rooms and suites, the lobby, dining room, event halls, spa, children’s club and public areas with sleeker options.
  • Jordache Enterprises Group to Open Six New Hotels: Jordache Enterprises group is expanding its hotel business in Israel by opening six new hotels in Israel in 2019. The group will open three new four and five-star hotels under the Herbert Samuel brand: the 162-room Milos Dead Sea Hotel; the 110-room Opera Tel Aviv Hotel, and the 30-room Boutique Tel Aviv Hotel. In addition, the Setai hotel brand will also open three hotels with a five-star rating.  
  • Isrotel Announces Plans to Open 11 New Hotels in Israel: Isrotel announced that it has plans to open 11 hotels in Israel, eight of which will be built by 2022. Five hotels will be in Tel Aviv, with others being built in Eilat, Jaffa, Jerusalem, the Dead Sea and the Negev Desert.

TRANSPORTATION & INFRASTRUCTURE:

  • Ben-Gurion Airport to be Expanded: Israel’s Transportation Ministry approved a NIS 3 billion expansion plan of Ben-Gurion Airport, expanding Terminal 3 by 80,000 square-meters, adding 90 new check-in counters, four new baggage hall conveyor belts, and expanding immigration checkpoints and parking facilities. In addition, a fifth passenger concourse will be constructed to accommodate additional aircrafts. This expansion will allow the airport to increase to accommodate up to 30 million more passengers a year.
  • Bubble On-Demand Shuttle Service Launches in Tel Aviv: Bubble, a new on-demand van shuttle service, has launched in collaboration with the Dan Bus Company in Israel to bring easier transportation to travelers in Tel Aviv. Passengers can now be picked up and dropped off at existing bus stops in Tel Aviv by ordering through the app.
  • New Bus Line Connecting Ben-Gurion Airport and Tel Aviv Hotels: Kavim has launched a new public bus route, 445, which will operate 24 hours a day, Sunday through Thursday, to connect the Ben-Gurion Airport and Tel Aviv’s hotel areas. Stops will include Ben Yehuda Street, Yehuda Halevi Street, Menachem Begin Street and the railway complex.

  • Israel Ministry of Tourism Introduces Interactive Map: The new interactive map of Israel displays thousands of items of information, including attractions, hotels, restaurants, hiking routes and other accommodation options. Tourists can filter and search items to easier allow them to navigate the country. In addition, the site is translated into 11 languages.
  • Mobile App Released to Make Old City Jerusalem More Accessible for the Visually Impaired: The Tower of David Museum and the Center for the Blind in Israel partnered to launch a mobile app that provides guided tours and routes for the visually impaired to experience Old City Jerusalem. The app provides evocative descriptions of the sights and encourages the listener to physically interact with the area through touch.

Restaurateur Rohan Talwar helms IB Hospitality and owns the illustrious West Hollywood gem, Norahs. A few months ago, he opened the doors to modish and culinary oasis, Margot – complete with exotic dishes, regional wines and special drink menu.

Margot, a Mediterranean infused restaurant composed of various seating and dine-in areas with 360 degree views of West LA, in Culver City is a diamond in the rough. The rooftop (indoor and outdoor seated venue) nests at the top of the PLATFORM (a boutique shopping experience with fashion/pop-ups, wellness and bites) and borders tons of retail, commercial and a new hotel soon erupting. The speedy Expo line train can be seen swiftly running east to west while you sip and/or dine outside and mimics the likes of some of the more prestigious eateries within Brooklyn’s Dumbo area. Similar to the train, rumors have quickly traveled throughout the city that Amazon will begin developing a new location nearby.

‘Hot like fire’ understates the atmosphere at night as the outside appears to be torched with tons of heat lamps in tow. With fresh farm-to-fork ingredients and handmade pastas (try the spaghetti), this place is a soon to be staple within the LA area. The menu constantly changes for an all-inclusive dining experience, including those with strict plant-based diets. Great for romantic dates, celebratory moments and family gatherings on ‘Sunday Funday’ largely due to their tapas as well as fresh raw seafood bar. Talk about delectable oysters. Step foot inside to find every inch of this establishment scream social media engagement wall. Note murals and tapestries all aligned in tune with a modernistic and contemporary ambiance. Service is extremely courteous, helpful and hospitable. And if that’s not enough to keep you coming back, the handcrafted cocktails will. Try their refreshening grapefruit gin and juice or a fruity frosé – worth every penny. It’s about time Culver City got what it deserved – a casual dining experience with budding professionals who seek something edgy, youthful and tasty.

Boost your metabolism before you eat, as SoulCycle is located on the second floor right underneath Margot. Or, after a zesty salad and sandwich at Margot, you may want to head down to the first level to the cozy ice cream shop with a menu of small-batch flavors, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream.

La Cosecha , EDENS’ upcoming contemporary Latin market in the Union Market District, is thrilled to welcome three more culinary partners ahead of its grand opening this fall.

Local culinary star and entrepreneur Daniella Senior , known for her uber-popular Colada Shop , and her partner, renowned mixologist Juan Coronado, are among the second wave of partners being revealed as new additions to the La Cosecha landscape. The highly anticipated Latin market will soft open this summer at 1270 4 th Street NE, followed by a grand opening this fall featuring over a dozen businesses housed within more than 20,000 square feet of culinary, retail, entertainment and community space. The newly announced partners set to join the roster at the market are:

Serenata + Zumo: Colada Shop visionary Daniella Senior brings a dynamic dual concept to La Cosecha in the form of Serenata and Zumo, designed to highlight the rich flavors of Latin America. By day, Zumo will serve the freshest juices and delicious, picture-perfect toasts. When evening falls, Serenata’s selection of exquisite, elevated cocktails and snacks will come via a full-service Latino culinary experience featuring preeminent drinks sourced and inspired by the many countries that make up the fabric of the rich Latin American heritage.

La Casita: Chef Iris Veronica Jimenez and her family have been local mainstays for more than 30 years, starting out in 1984 with a market in Adams Morgan and building up to their present collection of beloved Salvadoran restaurants scattered throughout the D.C. metro area. Their upcoming La Casita outpost at La Cosecha will be a fast casual take on the traditional pupuseria, featuring elevated street food reminiscent of the fare available at a traditional large open market. The new La Casita’s cuisine is full of flavor, using the fresh, simple ingredients found at those same markets: corn, beans, rice, cheese and peppers. Café Unido: With eight cafes scattered throughout Panama, Café Unido brings its ethos of responsible sourcing and focus on both community and environment to D.C., launching its first stateside coffee shop at La Cosecha. Founders Benito Bermudez and Mario Castrellon, along with their experienced team of baristas and roasters, use beans from the best farms in Panama, including Panama Geisha – the highest priced coffee variety in the world – and other specialty Panamanian beans. Corporate responsibility is in the DNA of Café Unido and as such, they dedicate a percentage of sales to social and environmental projects in coffee-growing areas of Panama in an effort to create shared value between customers and local suppliers. This quartet of exciting new culinary experiences joins half a dozen existing partners, which were announced earlier this spring:

El Cielo: Internationally renowned chef Juan Manuel Barrientos will bring the second U.S. outpost of his luxury restaurants to D.C., following the first in Miami, and offering his innovative take on cuisine from his native Colombia.

Ali Pacha: Bolivia native Chef Sebastian Quiroga is behind the plant-based fine dining experience at Ali Pacha (meaning ‘the plant universe’ in the Aymara language), which was named one of the five most exciting Latin American restaurants to watch in 2019.

Amparo: Mexico-born, longtime D.C. local Christian Irabién – who discovered his love of fine dining while cooking with Chef José Andrés and Chef Cathal Armstrong – brings a modern-day take on Mexican cuisine alongside a mezcal-heavy beverage program to the market.

Grand Cata: Owners and co-founders, Puerto Rico-born Pedro J. Rodriguez and Chile native Julio Robledo, bring their new grocery-wine bar concept to La Cosecha featuring a curated selection of classic and sustainable natural wines from Latin America as well as artisanal gastronomic products from the region.

NOVA BOSSA: Brazil native Carolina Furukrona’s luxury lifestyle destination promotes artisanal, largely female-run brands from the Latin world across art and home décor, b ain couture , fashion accessories, handbags, jewelry and ready-to-wear.

Peruvian Brothers: Sibling duo Giuseppe and Mario Lanzone will open their first brick-and-mortar location, bringing their locally beloved Peruvian-style sandwiches, empanadas, desserts and hot sauces to the market. Meaning “the harvest” in Spanish, La Cosecha is an elevated, high-design market that will serve as a gathering spot for celebrating contemporary expressions of Latin culture through food, art, music, fashion, film, sport, travel and dance. The Taste Returns

Los Angeles Times’ annual celebration of the Southern California culinary scene returns with events in L.A. and Costa Mesa. The pop-up block parties will take place at the Paramount Pictures Studios backlot over Labor Day weekend (Friday, Aug. 30 through Sunday, Sept. 1) and The MET over two days in October (Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19).

Hosted by The Times’ Food staff, each edition of The Taste will include three individual events. Unlimited tastings from the region’s best restaurants, a variety of wine, beer and seasonal cocktails, plus access to cooking demonstrations and talks by renowned chefs are included with admission. SAN CLEMENTE PALACE KEMPINSKI UNVEILS ART EXHIBITS AROUND VENICE BIENNALE

San Clemente Palace Kempinski Venice, the luxury resort located on its own private island in the Venetian lagoon, just eight minutes away from St. Mark’s Square, has launched two new exhibits in honor of the 58th Venice Biennale. Sculptures by English artist Tony Cragg and Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos are both currently on display around the resort’s historic gardens.

Tony Cragg’s four sculptures are currently on display at San Clemente Palace: his works Caught Dreaming, Runner and We are exhibited in the main garden, while his work Pair is on display in the hotel’s lobby. These artworks will be on display until November 17, 2019. Cragg currently lives in Wuppertal, Germany, and is known for creating sculptures that reference nature.

Meanwhile, San Clemente Palace is also exhibiting works by renowned Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos in a new exhibit curated by Nina Moaddel titled, What are you hiding? May you find what you are looking for. To create this exhibit, Vasconcelos was inspired by the 58th Venice Biennale’s theme, May you live in interesting times, with artworks referencing Portuguese pop culture, while reinterpreting contemporary art. Vasconcelos’ works play with the viewers’ perception through a sharp sense of humor that shuns dogmatism and at the same time explores issues of identity, migration and the exploitation of women.

On display in San Clemente Palace’s 12th-century church is Vasconcelos’ large-scale sculpture, called Madragoa (2015-2019), inspired by Lisbon’s façades, and exploring the intersections of art and architecture. In the gardens of San Clemente Palace is a piece titled, I’ll be Your Mirror #1 (2019), a giant Venetian carnival mask made of mirrors, which has previously been exhibited in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Viewers can look through the mask from any angle without ever losing sight of their own reflection. Also featured in the gardens is Betty Boop PA (2019), Vasconcelos’ most iconic work and part of the artist’s famous shoes series. The high-heeled shoe is crafted out of saucepans and questions the meaning of the word “feminine” in today’s world. Vasconcelos first became known internationally after her participation in the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005; and in 2012, she became the first woman (and the youngest artist) to exhibit at the Palace of Versailles.

Eat Drink Vegan announces Culinary Stage

Farmhouse Inn Receives its 13th Michelin Star

The Michelin Guide announced, this week, the list of restaurants receiving stars for 2019.  And the Farmhouse team was proud and honored to remain among that elite list for the 13thconsecutive year.  Says Executive Chef, Steve Litke, “to be one of only 90 restaurants to receive one or more stars, out of 657 that are recommended in the state of California makes me so incredibly proud of my entire team.  Every year that we receive our star is just as exciting and nail-biting as it was the very first year”.

For anyone new to the system, one star means “high-quality cooking, worth a stop,” two stars equals “excellent cooking, worth a detour” and three stars means a restaurant has “exceptional cuisine and is worth a special journey.”
