GIVE BACK THIS HOLIDAY SEASON WITH MARRIOTT HOTELS IN THE MIDWEST

With the holidays right around the corner, travelers will be presented with numerous occasions to donate their time, items or money for the greater good. From chances to volunteer to specials benefiting local organizations, each Midwest city offers its own unique traditions to help those in need. Marriott Hotels across the Midwest are providing prime opportunities for guests looking to open their hearts and give back while vacationing during this joyous time of the year.

Chicago, Illinois

●        The 42nd Annual Chicagoland Toys for Tots Motorcycle Parade, hosted on Sunday, December 1, attracts between 40,000 and 50,000 motorcyclists each year and provides thousands of toys to children and families in need during the holiday season. For those who do not own a motorcycle, the Chicagoland Toys for Tots organization is always looking for parade volunteers to assist in the smooth execution of the event through toy collection, photography, security, and more. Those traveling to Chicago for this event may stay at either Sheraton Grand Chicago or The Westin Michigan Avenue, which are both a 35-minute drive from the celebration. Patrons looking to purchase a brand-new toy to donate to the organization may stay at the Residence Inn Chicago Downtown/Magnificent Mile, which is located within walking distance of all the stores on the iconic Magnificent Mile.

Green Bay, Wisconsin

●        The Hotel Northland, Autograph Collection is teaming up with the New Community Shelter, an organization that addresses homelessness and hopelessness through education and supportive services, to supply holiday turkey dinners for the shelter’s residents. Throughout the month of December, the property will also donate one dollar from every turkey special ordered to the New Community Shelter. Additionally, hotel staff will ask visitors if they would like to match the dollar donation.

Detroit, Michigan

●        Serving 1,500 children annually, The Children’s Center of Detroit’s Holiday Shop provides less-fortunate parents with the ability to surprise their families with gifts under their Christmas trees. Free of charge, guests may shop a wide-array of brand new, donated items. Following “purchase,” gifts are wrapped on-site and ready for the holiday festivities. Those in the area that are looking to donate their time or never-been-used items to this organization can stay at the Aloft Detroit at the David WhitneyDetroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center or the Courtyard Detroit Downtown, which are all located just 20 minutes via car from the center.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

●        The Twin Cities Salvation Army offers aid to its community through all seasons of the year with a diverse range of programming. Those visiting this area during the holiday season may volunteer with the organization to assist with coat distribution, meal service, food distribution and more. With multiple donation centers in and around the city, travelers throughout Minneapolis have many opportunities to make a difference. Guests staying at the Courtyard Minneapolis- St. Paul Airport or Delta Hotels Minneapolis Northeast are just a short drive away from the multiple Salvation Army locations in St. Paul and Minneapolis including 2024 N. Lyndale Ave. and 3740 S. Nicollet Ave. Additionally, Moxy Minneapolis Uptown is located just a 15-minute drive to the Salvation Army on 1604 E. Lake Street.

Cincinnati, Ohio

●        The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year for food banks and as they try to accommodate the rise in demand, volunteers become a major asset to these organizations. The Freestore Foodbank, a local Cincinnati organization, provides food insecure individuals and families with nutritious meals and programs that encourage stability. Visitors at the Courtyard Cincinnati Covington and Renaissance Cincinnati Downtown may volunteer to assist in packing meals in boxes, sorting food donations and much more, as these properties are located 10 minutes away from the food bank.

NOAH CYRUS TO PERFORM AT SPACE 15TWENTY IN LOS ANGELES IN SUPPORT OF MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

100% OF PROCEEDS TO GO TO NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THE JED FOUNDATION

‘LONELY’

THE LONELY COLLECTION

In honor of World Mental Health Day, RECORDS/Columbia Records artist Noah Cyrus will be performing an acoustic set at Los Angeles’ Space 15Twenty on Saturday, October 19 in partnership with The Crystal Campaign. “A LONELY ACOUSTIC SESSION” will feature Cyrus performing songs for fans and friends, followed by a Q&A and discussion about mental health.

Today, Noah Cyrus also launched The LONELY Collection, in collaboration with The Crystal Campaign. Cyrus will donate 100% of her proceeds in support of non-profit organization The Jed Foundation, which protects emotional health and prevents suicide for our nation’s teens and young adults. Mental health issues are the leading cause of disability worldwide, and cases of anxiety, depression, and suicide have risen sharply in the last decade.

The LONELY Collection, which features a soirée of metaphysical icons and cartoon symbols alongside The Crystal Campaign’s hallmark earth-stone definitions, will include premium sweatshirts and sweatpants creatively designed by Cyrus. The capsule weaves delicately into Noah’s long- standing affinity toward mental health issues in her music, and the challenges they pose for young people in today’s increasingly globalized world. An advocate herself, Cyrus spoke candidly about mental health awareness on an expert panel with Lauv and The Jed Foundation last week – the apparel collection is inspired by her latest single, “Lonely.”

The event tomorrow is presented by The Crystal Campaign, mental health advocacy organization on a mission to make mental health as important and common as physical health. The unique event will open with a crystal healing meditation by Unplug guru and author Megan Monahan. Past talent featured in the campaign includes Pharrell Williams, Willow Smith, J Balvin, and Gigi Gorgeous. “We are intentionally leveraging everyday platforms of fashion, entertainment, and technology to create a global conversation to remove the stigma of mental health,” says campaign CEO Andrei Najjar.” Urban Outfitters has also partnered with the Crystal Campaign with 100% of the proceeds from the purchase of the Pendant Necklace going toward mental health advocacy and direct relief efforts in support of the non-profit organization To Write Love On Her Arms.

The release of the collection falls in tandem with the global online rollout of The Crystal Campaign’s Pendant Necklace with Urban Outfitters. To support the releases, The Crystal Campaign will be holding “A LONELY ACOUSTIC SESSION” at venue Space 15Twenty in Los Angeles starring Noah Cyrus. The Pendant Necklace launched at Urban Outfitters in honor of World Mental Health Day on Thursday, October 10th, and Noah Cyrus’ apparel collection is available from today HERE.

“The Jed Foundation is thrilled to partner with The Crystal Campaign and Noah Cyrus to raise awareness about mental health and to encourage more dialogue about these important issues,“ shared Katie Cunningham, JED’s Chief Programs and Operations Officer.

The Crystal Campaign aims to connect 1 million people with mental health resources within its first year. According to CEO Andrei Najjar, “We are intentionally leveraging everyday platforms of fashion, entertainment, and technology to create a global conversation and remove the stigma of mental health, while funding resources that directly help people.” TCC will continue a global rollout of fashion and entertainment partnerships and expand its digital magazine to erase the stigma surrounding mental health.

Noah Cyrus’ latest release ‘Lonely’ was accompanied by the stunning video co-directed by Symone Ridgell and Noah herself. The video features choir members sourced by The Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Music Program, and perfectly encapsulates the heart wrenching isolation and need for human connection that the song – penned by Noah – so beautifully conveys.

“It’s about vulnerability, trauma and dropping your facade, but also about human connection and finding strength among others (one of the many reasons it felt particularly powerful to work with the Los Angeles LGBT Center).”  Co-director Symone Ridgell reveals. “Lyrically, Noah’s music is always strikingly raw, and for this song, a video that reflects that is the only kind that could be justified to accompany it.” Noah elaborates: “Sometimes there can be dozens of people around you but you still feel lonely. I wanted the video to show what it could really feel like.”

Watch the video for ‘Lonely’ HERE.

This summer, 19-year-old Noah Cyrus returned with her timeless single ‘July,’ which continues to gain momentum globally, approaching 40-million combined global streams to date, the track is currently the cover of Spotify’s esteemed Pop Rising Playlist and has climbed to an average of 2 million streams per week on Spotify alone. Watch the music video for ‘July’ HERE.

Mastering the Art of Flavor

By Armon Hayes × Vaughn Lowery

Held at Haven’s Kitchen in Chelsea, 360 MAGAZINE experienced a foodie’s dream come true at “Mastering the Art of Flavor” culinary event. Six ordinary recipes transformed featuring distinguished flavors of Holland House and NAKANO. Hosted by MasterChef finalist Cate Meade, registered dietician Mia Syn as well as food stylist Jessica Formicola.

They shared incredible resources and recipes in preparation for the holiday season. Cooking tips on how we can remain calm and stress free in the kitchen. Take it from Chef Cate, “Prep and prepare” is the ingredient to a five-star meal.

As the spokeswomen for Holland House, Cate shared her three Holiday stress-free recipes developed with cooking wine. For starters, the Spinach Feta and Artichoke Dip is the perfect dish for hosting where guests can gather and enjoy. A 1/2 cup of Holland House White cooking wine comes together for a robust bold flavor in every bite. Served best with vegetable crudité, baked pita chips and/or crackers.

The Sherry Cherry Pork Loin Roast was Cate’s showstopping dish, demonstrating that a slow cooker is an essential kitchen appliance. Cooked to perfection, the sweet but savory taste served with Sherry Cherry sauce complemented the tender meat. Layered with braised onions and roasted vegetables for hearty appetites.

Beyond her ‘easy bake oven’ years, Cate’s Flourless Chocolate Cake is a healthier option for dessert without sacrificing taste. Holland House Red cooking wine with macerated strawberries emerged in red wine added depth to the cake’s moisture. Garnished with sifted powdered sugar or cocoa powder for a sweet dusting.

Post holiday season we all desire healthier behaviors to impact our lifestyles. Mia Syn, RDN shared “Healthy Habits for the New Year.” Her recipes were inspired by Nakano, a gluten-free seasoned rice vinegar. It’s sweet light flavor dresses up any dish from salads to pasta.

Each recipe takes no more than 15 minutes to prepare. Her first recipe Chopped Chinese Chicken Salad with Sesame Dressing is light but filling. NAKANO Toasted Sesame Rice vinegar poured over salad ingredients and thinly sliced chicken breasts.

Mia’s meals include a rainbow of vegetables which are packed with nutrients. A sheet pan required with a simple toss in the oven. My favorite, the low-carb Teriyaki Chicken breasts. Bite-sized morsels surrounded with veggies and peppers cut into small florets. Drizzle NAKANO Rice Vinegar with teriyaki sauce on top and bake for 7 minutes.

Cauliflower Fried Rice is the best substitute for a starchy option; including peas, carrots, cabbage with an egg.

Jessica Formicola hosted a food styling lesson filled with tips and tricks to wow your guests and get the most social engagement through your content. Her most vital and resourceful tip is to “use what you have on hand” to elevate any five-star dish. Be sure to include the real ingredients in your dish for a relatable and approachable take.

In short, if you’re looking to get in the kitchen during the holidays, be sure to use Holland House and NAKANO products to enhance your food’s overall appearance and taste.

JA Manafaru Resort Team Cleans Up Nearby Island

in Support of Parley Maldives Initiative

JA Manafaru Resort in the Maldives collaborated with local partners, guests and the community to undertake a plastic removal and sustainability initiative on a neighboring island

JA Manafaru Maldives recently collaborated with a local school and their ocean activity partner, Best Dives Private Limited, to collect more than 23 jumbo bags of waste from a neighboring island and Marine Protected Area; Gallandhoo for recycling through Parley Maldives.

Parley Maldives is the Maldives branch of Parley for the Oceans, a global collaboration network with a new approach to environmentalism. The mission of Parley is to end today’s major ocean threats through creativity, collaboration and eco-innovation. The private island resort of JA Manafaru itself is spectacularly beautiful and unspoilt, sitting in the crystal-clear waters of the most northern point of the Haa Alifu Atoll. Although the ocean and beach areas surrounding the award-winning resort are pristine examples awe-inspiring nature, other islands in the Maldives have issues with waste, particularly non- biodegradable materials like plastic.

Best Dives Maldives, a local diving, excursion and ocean activity company partnered with the JA Manafaru Resort and a local school – Hoarafushi School, to undertake a monumental task in cleaning up the western coastline of Marine Protected Area (MPA), Gallandhoo. The JA Manafaru Environmental & Sustainability team planned the clean-up with Best Dives, informed guests and arranged resort boats to collect volunteers heading to the island to clean the area. Together more than 50 staff, guests, students and parents filled over 23 jumbo bags of waste in one hour. Marine biologists asserted that Gallandhoo Island looked strikingly different after the team efforts and considerable potential damage to marine life was averted. All the plastic waste collected will be sent to Parley.

To address the fast-growing threat of marine plastic pollution, Parley have devised a strategy that can be scaled across private households, schools, businesses and governments: Parley AIR — Avoid, Intercept, Redesign. Guided by these pillars, they advocate avoiding the use of single-use plastics and promoting responsible disposal of single-use plastics. The goal in the Maldives is to boost the protection of the marine ecosystem through collective change. In collaboration with plastic interception partners, Parley has now exported 48 containers of plastic waste from the Maldives, preventing over 800 tons of plastics from entering the oceans. These plastics are recycled and upcycled to help create a new economy of eco-innovation and collaboration, beginning with reducing the use of raw virgin plastics in production processes.

School students and guests were presented with certificates of appreciation for their participation in the JA Manafaru event, and when asked why there was such an issue with plastic waste on Gallandhoo, the students explained there are low levels of understanding for many people regarding the disposal of plastic waste and of the environmental damage it causes. New General Manager, Karen Merrick commented;

JA Manafaru in collaboration with our ocean activity partner Best Dives is committed to improving upon and reducing our environmental footprint here in Haa Alifu, one of the most uninhabited atolls in Maldives. We are honored and humbled to live and work as custodians of this beautiful part of the world and assist with such initiatives whenever/wherever we can.  Every day we continue our internal mission to ensure education and awareness play a part of life here at JA Manafaru’.

In order to preserve the coral reef, beautiful beaches and sea life, the JA Manafaru team has an ongoing commitment to environmental awareness and sustainability. The hotel no longer uses plastic bottles for drinking water and instead have their own glass bottling plant, which results in a huge reduction in plastic waste. The JA Manafaru ‘House Reef Cleaning’ also invites guests to give back in a fun snorkelling and underwater reef-cleaning exercise, which certified divers can join. All items collected are logged so that any notable pollution can be immediately addressed. Other initiatives in planning at JA Manafaru include upgrading the water desalination plant for residual water to be used for landscaping, solar panel installation and a campaign for associates that raises awareness about reducing energy consumption.

Revamped Crew Scheduling Model Cuts Airline Delays by as Much as 30%

INFORMS Journal Transportation Science New Study Key Takeaways:

  • Researchers introduce slack times distributed across a crew schedule to plan ahead of any delays or disruptions.
  • The approach can reduce extreme delays by as much as 20–30% on average.
  • The buffers in scheduling cost airlines less than 5%.

Delays and disruptions in airline operations annually result in billions of dollars of additional costs to airlines, passengers and the economy. Airlines strive to mitigate these costs by creating schedules that are less likely to get disrupted or schedules that are easy to repair when there are disruptions—new research in the INFORMS journal Transportation Science has found a solution using a mathematical optimization model.

The study, conducted by Vikrant Vaze of Dartmouth College and David Antunes and Antonio Pais Antunes, both of the University of Coimbra, looks at data from Virgin America airline from 2014, that is 94 daily flights connecting 14 continental U.S. airports.

Using this data, researchers determined that introducing buffers or slack times that are distributed in an intelligent way across a crew schedule can reduce extreme delays by as much as 20–30% on average, with only a 2–3% increase in crew salary costs.

“Our model can lead to significant overall benefits, fewer flight delays, more importantly fewer worst-case delays, fewer crew infeasibilities, and lower passenger delays and disruptions,” said Vaze, a professor in the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth.

This research allows airlines and airline managers to seek the best trade-off between the goals of reducing delays and disruptions while not being overly conservative in buffer placement.

“If you err on one side, you will have large delays/disruptions. If you err too much on the other, you will have to pay the crew for sitting around doing nothing. Neither is quite a good situation to be in. So, we optimize the buffer placement in crew schedules,” continued Vaze. “Paying the crew a little extra ahead of time and then using that extra time as buffers strategically located throughout their work schedules can provide big gains in terms of delay reductions, if we use our optimization model.”

WINTER WHITEOUT

IT’S SNOWING WHITE TRUFFLES IN CARMEL VALLEY

LUCIA RESTAURANT & BAR KICKS OFF THE SEASON WITH A SALUTE TO THE DIAMOND OF ALBA

New Truffle-infused Menu & Cocktails for the Fungi Fanatic

Prized by kings and coveted by chefs, Italy’s famed Alba White Truffle hits its annual stride late fall when the nutty aromatic tuber debuts in auctions and A tables across the globe. Served raw, shaved by a specific slicer, the tuber magnatum pico from the Piedmont region is highly prized with pricing to match, ranging upward from $2,000 per pound. These aromatic subterranean spores, known for their pungent earthy and ethereal aroma, will be showcased in a variety of formats at Lucia Restaurant & Bar November 1 – December 15, 2019.

Chef Cal Stamenov’s month-long salute to the Diamond of Alba is no understatement. “Truffles are extremely fragile with a seven-day shelf life,” says Stamenov, who runs through 10 pounds per season, on average. Gracing Fallow Venison with cured duck liver, gnocchi and roasted persimmon or shaved atop a savory Warm Stuffed Ravioli plumped with soft quail egg and purple artichoke in a brown butter bath, this seasonal stunner is a classic complement to a variety of dishes. The wild underground fungi, harvested by special Lagotto Romagnolo dogs, lives in symbiosis with the roots of oaks, hazels and poplar trees taking on the color and essence defined by each species. “The flavor profile determines how we create each dish, and it changes by the harvest,” he adds.

As the season turns, diners will be offered an express lane into the culinary depths of this ancient wonder, with dishes such as a Classic Carnaroli Risotto with bone marrow, Parmigiano Reggiano and shaved white truffles and Nantucket Bay Scallops, paired with sunchokes and San Danielle Prosciutto, finished with a dusting of white love. Entrees include a Handcut Squid Ink Fettuccine, the ideal foil for truffles, served with Monterey Bay squid menuiere and shaved white Alba truffle. For game lovers, the red wine braised Guinea Hen Breast with braised leg stuffed agnolotti, paired with seasonal root vegetables and shaved truffle is a sure bet. Ensuring no opportunity is overlooked, Stamenov and team are also rolling out a sinful Heirloom Pear & White Truffle dessert as well, paired with caramel pot de crème, Meyer lemon madeleine and white truffle ice cream. Dishes are offered on a revolving monthly menu, market price.

TOAST OF THE COAST
Truffle-infused cocktails are also on tap this November, ensuring guests get their full fungi fix. Kick things off with The Hunt, featuring truffle infused WhistlePig Rye Whiskey, Punt e Mes and Bitter Truth chocolate bitters served in a classic coupe. The Garden Glass steps up with Belvedere vodka, Clear Creek pear liqueur, Meyer lemon, Bernardus honey and fresh shaved Alba truffle. Ideal for Carmel’s crisp fall nights the Nog Blanc combines Armagnac, truffle cream, fresh nutmeg and brown sugar syrup, shaken and served up. $25.

LUCIA RESTAURANT & BAR

Tucked 12 miles inland from the Pacific, the Forbes Four-Star Lucia Restaurant & Bar has long set the standard for dining along the California coast. Named after the majestic Santa Lucia Mountains which provide the dramatic backdrop to the 2,300 sq., ft., alfresco terrace, the contemporary 90-seat dining room is set in rich white Italian leather paired with rustic treatments crafted in marble, oxidized copper, teak and reclaimed wood. French wooden floors, chandeliers and stunning exterior fireplaces grace the mixed-use table layout with a focal point fireplace styled from Bagattini Oregon stone marking the main entrance. Paired with Stamenov’s light touch and artisanal integrity, the restaurant underscores the authentic relationship between food and terroir.

Classically trained with an eye to sustainability, Stamenov’s light touch and artisanal integrity are evident in every offering. Wielding an impressive resume working under the ardent eye of such culinary greats as Pierre Gagnaire, Michel Richard, Alain Ducasse, Eric Ripert and the legendary Masa Kobayashi, his California country cuisine plays off locally-sourced product with the essence of the dish taking center stage. Subtle reductions and thoughtful flavor marriages are his mantra, paired with a back pocket of local farmers and foragers keeping Lucia’s kitchen at a steady simmer.
Culling from the Lodge’s two-acre organic garden and a private two-acre cornucopia flush with 150+ fruit trees, heirloom vegetables, 180,000 Italian honeybees and a cache of Plymouth, Barred Rock, Rhode Island, Speckled Sussex and Ameraucana chickens, Stamenov’s seasonal spotlight menu is certain to please.

Nick DiGiovanni

Nick DiGiovanni is a 23-year-old recent grad of Harvard, who was the youngest contestant to ever compete in the finale of MasterChef. He started cooking when he was only eight years old, and started working in restaurants in high school, including an internship at Benu, a Michelin three-star restaurant in San Francisco. He ultimately decided to forego culinary school for Harvard, before deciding to leave for a semester to compete on MasterChef and ultimately make it to the finale.

During his time at Harvard, Nick created the first-ever food concentration called Food & Climate, to figure out ways to address the environmental crisis through food. That then led to the start of a new business venture called Voodles that would help revolutionize the way kids eat vegetables. The veggie based pasta is organic certified, kosher, gluten free, vegan & non-GMO and will be available online by 2020.
