Monaco Starts to Reopen

The Principality of Monaco has gradually started to reopen in compliance with health and safety measures imposed by the Government of Monaco.

After June 2nd, public restaurants, stores, and attractions began to open in an attempt to revitalize the large tourism sector of Monaco’s economy.

Monaco looks forward to travel restrictions being lifted for North American travelers so they can welcome tourists again — a cosmopolitan nation with 139 nationalities that come together and make the world’s second-smallest country diverse, inclusive, and welcoming.

The Hospitality Industry Reopens in Monaco

Step by step and in strict compliance with measures to fight the pandemic, various sectors of the tourism industry have begun to reopen, starting with hotels.

Several hotels are opening up to guests, such as Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, Hôtel de France, and Hôtel Fairmont Monte-Carlo. They are all focusing significant attention on the health, well-being, and safety of their guests as COVID-19 precautions will remain crucial to the Monaco community.

Reinventing Monaco’s Culture

Along with the hospitality industry, Monaco offers a plethora of artistic and cultural talent for locals and tourists to enjoy. As a result, different cultural organizations are currently adapting their shows to safer environments in response to COVID-19. For example, the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco is maintaining a strong social media presence and offering virtual tours and games, while Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo is uploading numbers of impressive ballet performances on the France 3 (PACA) and Monaco Info websites.

Cook County Hospital Restoration

Hyatt Place and Hyatt House Chicago Medical/University District, the first combined Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels located in Chicago, is set to open this summer in the Beaux-Arts classical-style landmark formerly the site of the remarkable 106-year old Cook County Hospital, at 1835 W. Harrison St. on the Near West Side. This 342,000 square foot adaptive reuse project, part of a $150 million multiphase plan spearheaded by Murphy Development and SOM, in a design-build collaboration with Walsh Construction, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc., and KOO, will also feature over 4,000 sq. feet of meeting space, open concept public spaces, a 24-hour fitness center, a food hall, medical offices, and a museum paying tribute to the hospital’s legacy. Upon opening, the hotels will be operated by Aimbridge Hospitality.

The hotels will create an experience that enables guests to enjoy the benefits of both brands in one location, while ensuring guests the utmost confidence in public traveling following COVID-19.

“We are excited to introduce the first combined Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels to the Chicago area, while also paying homage to such an incredible landmark” said General Manager Nilesh Pandey. “Our guests can appreciate the contemporary design and spacious layout of our guestrooms – from the separate spaces to sleep and work, including the Cozy Corner at Hyatt Place, to the apartment-style suites with real kitchens at Hyatt House – our guests can choose the space that fits their needs.”

An inspired design by Paul Gerhardt, the Cook County Hospital created a loud statement amongst the various other medical buildings surrounding it in the medical district. Consequently, both the exterior and interior of the building suffered severe deterioration due to deferred maintenance and exposure to the elements once it closed down. With Ionic columns, along with faces of lions and cherubs emulated throughout, it communicated the ideation of power and strength especially for those less fortunate, a feeling that to this day remains true to the space.

Drawing inspiration from the history of this remarkable piece of infrastructure, the project will restore and preserve the historical pieces that have been rooted there for over 160 years, which includes the original Beaux-Arts masonry detailing and terracotta ornamentation of the exterior, the wood-framed windows, interior decorative plaster work, the double height main lobby and 106-year old restored marble stone staircase, elevator cores, as well as the double loaded corridor and terrazzo flooring of the interior. The team also spent over $18 million to replace all windows and 4,160 terra cotta pieces on the exterior, made of granite, brick, and limestone.

The interior of the building was completely gutted except for the impressive old surgical theaters on the eighth floor, first used by Rush Medical School when the hospital opened in 1857. Replaced by Stroger Hospital of Cook County, the space was later preserved as an architecturally significant landmark, often referred to as Chicago’s “Ellis Island,” a safe haven where anyone was able to receive service and care. The hospital turned hotel is now both an official Chicago landmark, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also known for being host to the world’s first ever blood bank, and inspiration for the hit medical TV drama “ER.” The new adaptive reuse design will include a new façade for a portion of the southern face of the hospital, previously connected to the demolished projecting wings and additions of the building. A museum gallery will also be built on site to pay homage to the history of the building.

Located in the epicenter of one of the most robust medical districts in the world, Hyatt Place Chicago Medical/University District and Hyatt House Chicago Medical/University District embodies the sense of rebirth for a true landmark, a resurgence of life and a sense of inclusion in the neighborhood and surrounding communities. Close to many well-known medical institutions including Rush University Medical Center, the Cook County Hospital is the symbolic heart of the Illinois Medical District that consists of over 560 acres of medical facilities and labs, with over 29,000 employees and 50,000 daily visitors. With close proximities to the United Center, Fifth Third Arena – Chicago Blackhawks Community Ice Rink, UIC and Rush University, the hotels will serve not only the medical district, but also anyone else traveling in and out of town for upcoming events, leisure and much more.

Hyatt Place Chicago Medical/University District will offer the following, with safety guidelines in place to adhere to the health and well-being of all guests:

103 spacious guestrooms with separate spaces to sleep, work and play, as well as a Cozy Corner sofa-sleeper

Free Wi-Fi throughout hotel and guestrooms
Necessities program for forgotten items that guests can buy, borrow or enjoy for free
Event Spaces with more than 4,000 square feet of flexible, high-tech meeting/function space
Fitness Center featuring cardio equipment with LCD touchscreens and free earbuds

Hyatt House Chicago Medical/University District will also offer:

107 stylish apartment-style Kitchen Suites with fully-fitted kitchens, comfy living rooms, spacious bedrooms and stylish bathrooms with complimentary skin and hair care amenities from KenetMD™
Free Wi-Fi throughout hotel and guestrooms
The Commons, a comfy lobby lounge with an open and welcoming space for guests to relax, work or socialize, and the Outdoor Commons, which includes a fire pit and BBQ grill
24-hour Workout Room to keep fitness routines going
Gathering Rooms with more than 4,000 square feet of flexible meeting spaces, a thoughtful food and beverage menu, audiovisual equipment and a House Host to make sure events are a success
Borrows Menu with often-forgotten items from phone charges to razors
A Very Important Resident (VIR) program, which includes a complimentary welcome amenity, H Bar dining credit, laundry credit, and other personalized perks, for guests staying 21 or more consecutive nights

Additional conveniences, including 24-hour Guest Laundry
A pet-friendly policy that welcomes dogs or cats

This project is part of the Cook County Hospital’s transformative $150 million renovation led by Murphy Development and Walsh Group. The multiphase project will also include the opening of Dr. Murphy’s Food Hall, a 10,000 sq. ft. dining destination led by Hospitality HQ and Akhtar Nawab, the award-winning Chef, restaurateur, TV personality, and food hall veteran, along with medical offices, a daycare center, and a museum paying tribute to the hospital’s legacy.

Reservations with opening rates/offers are now available for travel after July 25, 2020.

A Letter From MGM Resorts

As quarantine policies lift around the country and people begin to leave their homes, travel guidelines must be carefully calculated so jet setters can safely explore. In a letter from Jenn Michaels, Senior Vice President of Public Relations at MGM Resorts International, she explains how the resort experience has changed for a health-conscious stay.

Having recently reopened resorts in Mississippi, Las Vegas, and New York and Excalibur opening later this week, Michaels explains the new normal for the MGM Resorts. Employees and guests wear masks, plexiglass separates players at card game tables, and signs remind guests to keep social distance from one another. The resorts implement new technological innovations to ease worries for guests. One technology applies to their restaurants where guests can now view menus and wine lists on their phones and receive texts when their tables are ready. Another innovation allows guests to use their mobile phones to check into their room and as a room key. Technology like this limits the touch points in one’s MGM Resort stay.

Jenn explains that, despite the readjustments necessary for a safe stay, guests still relax and enjoy their stays, “What else do I see as I wander around? People having a great time, enjoying fun dinners, hanging out poolside, exploring the Bellagio Conservatory (a gorgeous Japanese display), watching the fountains dance, and generally having a blast, like you’re supposed to in Las Vegas. And even better than that is seeing people back at work and how happy they are to be reunited with their colleagues.”

And for those of you who are still weary of travel, Jenn assures guests that MGM Resorts will be happily awaiting your arrival, “When you’re ready to come back, we’re here. There’s no doubt that the world needs travel, adventure, exploration, experiences. And all of us, in some way, play a role in that for consumers – whether it’s the destination itself or telling wonderful stories that inspire people to travel. Let’s continue to be there for each other and for the world.”

Our lives may look different but with innovative technology and careful policies, we can ease back into comfortable and exciting vacations.

Western River Expeditions

With the official announcement from Grand Canyon authorities that river operations will again resume on June 14, many are looking to get a spot on an epic outdoor adventure this summer.

Snagging seats on 2020 Grand Canyon rafting trips was impossible just a few months ago. However, pandemic-driven cancellations by international travelers has opened up seats for some of Western River Expeditions’ 2020 departures.

“Select departures June through September of 2020 now have limited availability,” said Brandon Lake, company CMO. “Normally last-minute inquiries would be directed to 2021 or even 2022 selections. This is an incredible opportunity for those who are making last-minute plans and feel like an outdoor adventure may be the best choice for a summer adventure this year.”

Vacations that embrace fresh air and the healing powers of nature can work wonders on pandemic-driven nerves. “On these iconic expeditions our guests immerse themselves in a remote world that provides a much-needed escape from civilization,” explains Lake. “A trip through the Grand Canyon becomes not only a celebration of the river and its untamed surroundings, but of life, providing a way to reconnect and refresh.”

This is Western River Expeditions’ promise for a true trip-of-a-lifetime far removed from the stress and challenges of today’s world. The more time spent on the river, the more the canyon reveals its sublime mysteries.

Western River Expeditions’ 6 or 7 Day Grand Canyon Rafting Vacation carries guests 188  river miles in custom-designed J-Rig rafts, maneuvering Class III-V rapids and each day descending deeper into geologic time, before a helicopter transports them back to the rim. Their Grand Canyon 4 Day River & Ranch Tour  and Grand Canyon 3 Day Lower Canyon Trip brings visitors down 100 river miles over Class II and III rapids. But first there’s a scenic helicopter ride to access the put-in. Guests on the 4-Day tour enjoy a pre-excursion overnight at Bar 10 Ranch on the North Rim of the Canyon, complete with horseback riding and optional ATV adventures.

Western River Expeditions for nearly 60 years has operated five-star-quality river rafting vacations. This year they are also applying their decades of professionalism to pandemic-related challenges. Israel’s New Purple Standard

In preparation for reopening Israel to both domestic and international tourism, Israel’s Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Health have outlined a new “Purple Standard” for operating hotels in the country. For hotels to remain in compliance with the new standard, they must reach and maintain several benchmarks outlined by Ministry of Health officials that will deem the property safe for travelers.

“It’s extremely important that hotels across our country maintain a high level of health and sanitation standards to ensure travelers’ safety when visiting Israel,” said Asaf Zamir, Israel’s Minister of Tourism. “When we are able to open our borders to international travelers again, we want tourists to feel confident that Israel is taking every precaution to ensure they have a safe, pleasurable vacation in our beautiful and vibrant country.”

Though a date has not been set on when international travel will open again, the Ministry of Tourism is working diligently to implement safety measures across all aspects of travel within Israel, beginning with the “Purple Standard” protocol. These procedures include:

  • Universal rules of conduct for reducing infection, which includes wearing a face mask in all public spaces, maintaining a distance of a minimum of six feet apart, and frequent hand washing.
  • Guidelines for reopening of hotels which include benchmarks for pre-opening preparation, cleaning and disinfecting protocols, guidelines for cleaning the hotel water systems (such as pools), and a dedicated staff member to oversee all health and safety procedures.
  • Outlined guidelines for operations once the hotel is open, which include temperature checks for all staff, guests and visitors, installation of transparent plexiglass partitions at reception desks, clear signage detailing health and safety measures and restrictions to the number of guests in an elevator at one time.
  • Regular maintenance and sanitation of all facilities will be required to the highest health standard.
  • Kitchens and dining rooms at hotels will only be reopened once they have met the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health. All staff will be required to wear face masks and gloves while all seating will be arranged in accordance with social distancing measures. Dining hours will be expanded to allow for proper distancing.
  • Each room will undergo a thorough and deep sanitation process before a new guest is able to check in. Should it be determined that a guest may have been exposed, that room will close for seven days and will undergo a special sanitation process from an outside vendor to ensure it’s safe to re-enter.
  • Guests utilizing spa facilities will be required to fill out a health questionnaire and take a temperature check before any treatment is performed. Therapists and staff will all be required to wear masks and wash hands between each treatment. In addition, treatment rooms will be fully disinfected between each guest.
  • Outdoor meetings and events are allowed for up to 50 people while they stay in accordance with social distancing measures. Indoor events allow only eight people and require face masks.
  • Off-site supplier entry to the hotel will be reduced as much as possible. If suppliers must enter the property, they will undergo temperature checks and will be required to wear a mask.
