News & Topics

“Butoh” is a form of dance performance that began in Japan in the 1960s and then spread to the rest of the world. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, performance inspired Butoh will be available online as a part of the TOKYO REAL UNDERGROUND dance festival. This festival is one of “Tokyo Tokyo FESTIVAL Special 13” projects sponsored by Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Arts Council Tokyo. (a series of events being held to celebrate culture and arts in Tokyo in culmination with the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020). Experimental performances will be performed by a diverse mix of veteran and new artists.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has launched the Tokyo 2020 Portal Site as a way for people to stay up to date on all news related to the Tokyo 2020 Games. The site has information on the Tokyo 2020 Games, places to visit in Tokyo during the events, the torch relay, ways to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, and information for people overseas who cannot attend the events. Make sure to check the portal site for real-time information on the Tokyo 2020 Games.

Up for a trip back in time to one of Tokyo’s most well-known commercial districts? Using revolutionary virtual technology, you can visit the Ginza 4 Chome intersection during the Edo Era (1850s), the Meiji Era (1910s), and the Showa Era (1940s). The area during these time periods has been amazingly recreated in a virtual space that seems so real that you’ll swear you’re actually there. Experience how Ginza changed through the years with the online “Tokyo Time Machine Project – Ginza VR.”

Do you enjoy saunas and art? The art collective teamLab has created an exhibition in Roppongi, the likes of which the world has never been seen before. This new exhibition gives you a nuanced experience as you view artwork in saunas. You’ll be able to enjoy several works, including a new group of pieces based on teamLab’s latest project “Supernature Phenomenon.” The exhibition runs until August 31. Tokyo is always the best place to enjoy the latest creations of teamLab. Needless to say, teamLab Borderless and teamLab Planets, both of these are must-visit museums in Tokyo!

Tokyo nightlife just got a lot more sensational. On April 1, Japan’s premier magic theater, MAHOU Dining Bar OSMAND ~The Gate of Iaract~, reopened in Roppongi. A new LED monitor installed on the stage. You can see the various landscapes and images on the large LED monitor. OSMAND delivers a more fantastic and powerful magic show than ever. MAHOU is able to get many of the world-renowned magicians to put on shows. For the first time in Japan, you’ll be able to enjoy a combination of in-person and online magic shows.

Over the past 15 years, the creative collective known as “rhizomatiks” has been making works that transcend the realm of media art. From now, until June 20, you can enjoy their old and new works throughout their archive at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) ’s special large-scale exhibition entitled rhizomatiks_multiplex. Kiyosumi Shirakawa, the area where the MOT is located, also saw an increase on residency of international artists. A new project also allows you to view these works online.

Asakusa today. New vitality in a historical town

The COVID-19 pandemic has left Tokyo almost devoid of overseas tourists. The city never rests, however, and has been busy making preparations for the day when we can all travel freely over national borders. Tokyo carries on with the traditional, while always in the process of recreating itself. Read more here.

Rendezvous In The Zoo!

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Kicks Off Annual Virtual Fundraising Gala—Rendezvous In The Zoo (R·I·T·Z)—with Silent Auction to Save Wildlife

Festivities start at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 5.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is engaging wildlife allies everywhere to help save species during the annual virtual Rendezvous In The Zoo (R·I·T·Z)—Bringing the World to You. This premier online gala takes place Saturday, June 5 at 7 p.m., and aims to raise funds for rare and endangered wildlife at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park, along with fueling the nonprofit organization’s crucial wildlife conservation work worldwide – continuing its stated commitment to build a world where all life thrives.

“Last year, tens of thousands of wildlife allies from more than 21 countries on six continents, and across 35 states, helped us make history at our first-ever virtual R·I·T·Z,” said Paul A. Baribault, president and CEO of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. “In a year of changes and challenges, we were able to come together, raise funds and share the extraordinary ways our members, donors and guests are helping us save wildlife around the world. They are counting on us, and we will never give up.”

This year’s gala is a few days away, but the public is encouraged to get a head start by taking part in the R·I·T·Z online silent auction. Anyone can visit the auction pages to bid on one-of-a-kind and exclusive items that cannot be found anywhere else. Among other incredible items is Nature, a limited-edition work of art by international artist Romero Britto. This inspirational piece was developed to commemorate and celebrate the organization’s transformation into San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, and its effort to amplify the importance and urgency of its mission to save wildlife worldwide. Jewelry and accessories, such as a Princess Diana-inspired purse; and amazing vacations, including a New Orleans Getaway, are also highlights. Virtual R·I·T·Z participants can also join in this year’s Love for Wildlife Competition. The competition highlights four of the conservation programs San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance allies make possible, and how they are saving wildlife—including polar bears, jaguars, platypuses and burrowing owls—in the organization’s eight regional conservation “hubs” that represent its highest-priority work with communities and partners around the world.

Anyone with a computer or a smartphone can participate in this year’s gala, from the comfort of home, simply by visiting the R·I·T·Z Facebook page. Guests to the virtual R·I·T·Z will enjoy special guest appearances, amazing live musical performances, handcrafted cocktail-making demonstrations, multiple wildlife visits from San Diego Zoo Rady Ambassadors, fascinating stories about wildlife and updates on the organization’s worldwide conservation efforts—plus, many more fun surprises. Attendees who register in advance will receive exclusive insider details and be entered in a sweepstakes to win air travel for two, to an Alaska Airlines destination of their choice, provided by Alaska Airlines, Official Airline Sponsor of the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

Virtual Rendezvous In The Zoo (R·I·T·Z)—Bringing the World to You begins at 7 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time on Saturday, June 5. The online silent auction starts Friday, May 28 and closes at 8 p.m. PDT on Sunday, June 6. For more information on R·I·T·Z, and how to make a donation, visit San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Those wishing to help via traditional mail can send a donation of any amount to San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, c/o R·I·T·Z, P.O. Box 120551, San Diego, CA 92112.

Airheart Explorer Launches

Airheart Explorer Launches to Help Consumers Navigate Complicated Travel Restrictions & Policies

CLICK TO TWEET: Airheart Explorer launches to help navigate travel restrictions domestic and abroad, so people can travel with confidence: Airheart Explorer

Airheart unveiled their free tool, Explorer, to help people travel again, safely. Travelers can now discover which destinations are accessible and what’s required for their trip, all through one user-friendly platform.

Now more than ever, navigating restrictions and policies for travel is overwhelming. Crowd-sourcing information from friends and family online and visiting countless tourism or government sites is a lot of work and highly error prone. Airheart eliminates the guesswork, so people can travel with confidence.

Airheart’s data is aggregated from official sources by our data partners, including Sherpa. Then, Airheart further distills and organizes it into a searchable, scannable, easy to understand format, to put travelers at ease when navigating what’s required of them.

Key Features:

  1. Discover which destinations – international and domestic – are accessible for travel based on your origin location prior to the booking engine phase where you need to be destination specific.
  2. View government policies and COVID19-risk data for your destination.
  3. Filter by what’s required of you – quarantine, COVID19 test, masks in public (and soon by your vaccination status).
  4. Receive notification when policies and restrictions change.
  5. See COVID19 transmission rates per destination.
  6. View local guidelines for what to expect on-location at bars, restaurants, shops and more.
  7. Pin routes and create a short-list of places on your wish list.

The three founders diligently focus on maximizing the user experience. The team is also extremely well-traveled, multi-passport carriers and currently straddling multiple continents – the US to Australia – to bring this to consumers worldwide.

“As seasoned travelers, we found this problem so critical that we dropped everything to work on solving it for the community. Our long-term vision is to create a place for organizing and managing the full lifecycle of a trip, starting with discovery using Airheart Explorer,” said co-founder and CEO, Lindsey Renken. “In a world where we’ve optimized our lives heavily, planning travel is still an inefficient process. We noticed our friends and colleagues experiencing similar issues, and ultimately, this kept a lot of trips from happening. We figured there has to be a better way than the status quo.”

Airheart is where deep product and engineering knowledge meets function. The team’s experience has been pivotal in elevating Airheart Explorer beyond what’s on the market now:

  • Ivan Vanderbyl, CPO, who’s founded three companies, 2 exits; Former Sr. Director of Product Management at Tricentis; 14 years in software development and product management. He has lived and worked in 5 countries and traveled to over 30 countries.
  • Arie Litovsky, CTO, adds over 15 years of software development experience to the team. He most recently worked as a software developer at Facebook and Q&A site Stack Overflow. He’s traveled to over 20 countries while adding to his collection of 3 passports and 4 languages.
  • Lindsey Renken, CEO, is an experienced founder; previously raised nearly 1 mil. as a co-founder for a consumer-facing application. B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, UT Austin. Over 11 years in product, marketing and data science. She has traveled to 31 countries and counting, many of which were solo trips.

“Drawing on the intrepid explorer and fearless solo traveler Amelia Earhart, we hope to clear the path for future travelers,” said Renken.

Traveling in a time of COVID – How Parnell Pharmaceuticals nasal spray can help protect travelers

Traveling in a time of COVID – How Parnell Pharmaceuticals nasal spray can help protect travelers.

As many are starting to venture out on vacations and air travel the must have items to take include hand sanitizer, and disinfecting wipes but recent research has shown that nasal sprays can help protect against some viruses. Especially during this critical time when many are still hesitant to be vaccinated, consumers will look to products such as these to provide an extra layer of protection.

A successful ENT specialist and a board-certified dermatologist took their talents to develop, manufacture, and market prescription and OTC products that maintain and restore mucosal and skin integrity. These nasal sprays, mouth sprays and wipes are the must have products for consumers to arm themselves to combat viruses, bacteria and provide another layer of protection against COVID-19.

Dr. Francis Parnell, a practicing Otolaryngology-Head and Neck (ENT) Surgeon for over 30 years is Chairman and C.E.O. of Parnell Pharmaceuticals, the pharmaceutical company he co-founded. In 1986 with his wife Dr. Diana Parnell. Diana Parnell is a board-certified dermatologist with extensive experience and expertise in cosmetic and laser surgery as well as general dermatology and head of Cosmetic and Laser Surgery Institute, Kentfield, CA. Together the couple bring years of consumer health experience, treating patients and developing oral, nasal and personal care products so that consumers could have options to protect themselves.

Parnell Pharmaceuticals announced the development of the topical nasal spray called Nomovid. Nomovid is based upon a substance licensed by Parnell from New Mexico Tech University to treat drug-resistant bacteria and fungi such as MRSA and Candida auris.

Our products provide an extra layer of antiseptic protection which is so helpful especially for those who travel frequently. Since it breaks down lipids in the viral envelope, we tested the nasal spray against the novel coronavirus, says Parnell. An independent, outside laboratory has confirmed our findings and found it to be greater than 99.7 % effective in vitro within five minutes against the SARS-CoV-2 virus which causes COVID-19.

Parnell’s newest patented product, Mouth Kote-MD Mouth Spray, contains MycoDelens and Natural Yerba Santa and has been shown with in vitro laboratory testing to be an effective antiseptic against Antimicrobial Resistant (AMR) pathogens including bacteria, fungi, and coronaviruses such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Mouth Kote-MD is an excellent pre-rinse before dental exams to help prevent COVID-19 and, in addition, it helps dry mouth and restores enamel. It has also been shown to be effective as well against Streptococcus mutans, a major cause of dental caries (cavities) and Candida albicans (yeast).

For the convenience of travel, individually packaged DermSol-MD® Antiseptic Face & Body wipes were developed specifically for topically decontaminating dangerous viruses like Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Antimicrobial Resistant (AMR) bacteria like MRSA. They moisturize the skin and contain natural Yerba santa. Unlike standard wipes and sanitizers, DermSol-MD® is free from alcohol, biocides, and other toxic chemicals and it does not cause skin irritation and destroy skin cells.  Conveniently packaged and individually wrapped they are perfect for on the go.

For more information about the product please visit  Parnell’s website.

In addition, as viral infections tend to start in the nasal passages, keeping the nose healthy can protect against colds, flu and respiratory issues. Parnell offers the following travel tips:

  1. Especially during this challenging time….if required, always wear your mask to cover your nose and mouth. As airplane and summer travel season picks up, have a travel kit ready before you board or head out on an adventure – extra masks, sanitizing wipes and nasal spray
  2. Keep nasal passages moist – Parnell’s Pretz-MD/Nomovid Saline Nasal Spray adds an extra layer of protection even if you are vaccinated
  3. Drink water, stay hydrated – always so important when it comes to cold/flu season. Fluids can help avoid dehydration especially with air travel.
  4. Many medications (e.g. decongestants) can contribute to nasal dryness.
  5. Humidifiers are great in the home to keep the air moist and nasal passages healthy  There are some travel sized ones that are perfect to take along with you on your trip.

Parnell Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a closely held, private pharmaceutical company founded in 1986 and headquartered in San Rafael, California with an office in Dublin, Ireland. The company develops, manufactures, and markets prescription and OTC drug products that maintain and restore mucosal and skin integrity. The products are natural-based and patented for oral and nasal care, personal care, and anti-infective use. Parnell products are marketed and distributed in North America and Europe. Best Places to Live × Work

The Best Places to Live and Work Abroad in 2021—InternationalLiving.com

While just about every country is willing to provide a tourist visa that lets visitors hang around for a few months, most will not grant permission to live and work within their borders without a job offer from a local employer. Some offer long-term residence visas that let expats legally live in the country, but they don’t typically allow for work. A new report from the editors at International Living highlights four countries where it’s possible to find easy access to a residence visa—and the permits that allow for work as well.

Source: International Living

It’s clear that an increasing number of Americans want a different life and are looking for countries where they can live and work legally. But the options are limited without a local employer willing to provide a job.

Expats able to earn from anywhere do have a few good options, however, according to International Living’s report. While a small collection of countries welcomes outsiders, who can qualify for the necessary visas, four in Latin America and Europe stand out as the best options in terms of cost, ease, and timing.

Panama

If your goal is to live and work remotely overseas, but remain close to U.S. borders, Panama is your best bet. Direct flights land in Panama City from at least nine U.S. cities and take between three and seven hours, depending on where you’re coming from.

Beyond proximity, Panama offers what it calls the Panama Friendly Nations Visa, a special program whereby nationals of certain countries (including the U.S. and Canada) can apply for permanent residence, which comes with a Panamanian cédula, the local ID card. That cédula is permanent, allowing holders to come and go as they please, as would a born-and-bred Panamanian. Separately, the program also allows holders to request a work permit through the Ministry of Labor, though that’s part of a different process.

Obtaining a temporary cédula takes about eight days. It will take another two days to obtain a multiple-entry visa that’s necessary so an individual can come and go as they wait out the roughly five-month process for the government to issue a permanent cédula. Once a cédula has been obtained, a person can then apply for a work permit from the Ministry of Labor, which will take about a month.

To start the cédula process, you’ll need basic documents—passport, proof from the FBI that there is no criminal record—and $5,000 in a Panamanian bank account, plus $2,000 for each dependent. And to obtain a work permit, then you’ll need to set up a Panamanian corporation (which can be disbanded after a year).

Uruguay

If speed is more important, then Uruguay is a great choice. Here, expats can land at the airport with the correct collection of documents, and if they already have a pre-scheduled filing date with the immigration office that day, they can file their paperwork and have a temporary cédula that afternoon or the next day. All that’s required is a birth certificate and an apostilled police record (meaning it has been authenticated and is acceptable across international borders). They will also need to show that they have the financial means to support themselves with a provable stream of income from anywhere in the world.

With a temporary cédula, they will also have immediate access to the state healthcare system, or they can immediately buy access with a local, private healthcare plan, which will cost about $70 to $350 a month, depending on the bell and whistles they want.

To manage the process themselves, expect to pay about $600 to $700. But they will also need to have a proficient level of Spanish, as none of the paperwork is in English. Otherwise, hire an attorney. It will be quicker and more efficient and will cost between $1,000 and $2,000.

Portugal

Portugal has two visas that would apply to someone wanting to live and work on the Iberian Peninsula: D2 and D7. Technically, the D2 is for independent workers and entrepreneurs, while the D7 is for those who are retired or earning passive income. In practical terms, the D7 will make sense for most people, even if they’re not retired, because it’s based on income. The D2 requires proof that an expat can support themselves as a freelancer and can begin issuing Portuguese invoices on which the business will be taxed, though the tax rate is fixed at 20% for 10 years.

With the D7, instead, a person will need only to show that they have €8,000 (about $9,700) per person in a Portuguese bank account and that they have the equivalent of €30,000 ($36,400) in a bank account back in their home country.

To apply for either a D2 or D7 visa, an expat must enroll in the Portuguese tax system and become a tax resident. That requires obtaining a Portuguese tax number before they can even apply for a visa. And for that, they will need a sponsor, which can be a law office, accounting office, or migration office.

For that reason, they’ll need to hire a pro to walk them through the process and be their sponsor for the tax number. All in, that will cost you between €1,000 and €2,500 (about $1,200 to $3,000). The process will require two to four months to complete.

As a freelancer, an expat will also want to apply for Non-Habitual Resident status, or NHR, which is issued to people who’ve never lived in Portugal before and move to the country. With NHR status, income earned outside the country is exempt from taxes. They will have to file a Portuguese tax return and declare the income, though they’ll owe no taxes on it. The other benefit of this is that it shows Uncle Sam they’re a tax resident of another country, which then helps trigger their eligibility for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion.

A person is eligible to apply for Portuguese citizenship and a passport after five years of residence, though they have to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the Portuguese language.

Czech Republic

It’s a two-step process in Czech Republic. First step: apply to join the živnostensky (zivno) list. This isn’t specifically for foreigners. It’s a trade license for any Czech resident who works independently, be that a plumber, masseuse, artist, or whoever. That will take a week at most. Zivno in hand, they can then apply for a one-year, temporary residence visa.

They must apply for a residence visa at a Czech embassy outside of the Czech Republic, show they have housing (a notarized lease agreement) for the full-length of the visa they seek, up to one year. That means they’ll need to visit the Czech Republic to arrange that. Some expats will move to Prague, obtain their housing and zivno, then take the train to nearby embassies in Berlin, Vienna, or Bratislava and complete their application.

They will need a signed letter from their bank stating that they have the equivalent of 125,000 Czech crowns on deposit (about $5,700). That will need to be translated into Czech, which a visa agency can handle. Be sure the account has a debit card, which must be presented at the application meeting at the Czech embassy, because officials will want to see it—it’s proof that a person can access the account.

An FBI criminal background check is required, though as an American an expat can also go to the U.S. embassy in Prague and sign an affidavit attesting to their criminal-free background. Along with a passport and an application form, that’s pretty much all the documents an applicant needs.

To hire a local agency to help with the process, it should cost less than 15,000 crowns (about $685) for everything. The embassy fee is a separate 5,000 crowns (about $230).

Once the temporary visa expires after a year, it can easily be traded in for a renewable, two-year long-term residence visa. After five years as a legal resident, a person is eligible to apply for Czech citizenship and a Czech passport, which like the Portuguese passport, is an EU passport and thus gives them free rein to live and work anywhere in the EU.

Disney Parks Reopening × Travel Trends

By: Tim Hentschel, Co-Founder and CEO of HotelPlanner

Headline:  Mickey Mouse Comes Out of His House…Kind of

Since 1955, families from around the world have made a special pilgrimage to Disneyland Park in Anaheim, CA. What began on 160 acres of orange groves is now one of the most famous and beloved destinations in the world. Prior to the pandemic, Disneyland hosted more than 18 million visitors a year who spent nearly $3 billion in the process, not including the revenue generated by restaurants, hotels and other local venues. However, for the past year and a half, Mickey’s doors in Anaheim have been shut.

It’s a very welcoming sign from California that Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park partially reopened with limited capacity on April 30. Disney theme park re-openings have become a barometer of sorts for other venues to gauge whether it’s time for them to reopen. This is a positive step in the right direction to bring California’s tourism vitality back to full strength.

Disney’s venture into post-pandemic life is taking a tiered approach. According to Disneyland, “as required by California directive, the Disneyland Resort is only welcoming in-state visitors in parties no larger than 3 households at this time.” There are no date targets set for inclusion of out-of-state visitors, meaning non-Californians won’t really be able to plan a Disneyland pilgrimage for some time. The Disney Grand Californian Hotel & Spa has begun its phased reopening. Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel plans to reopen on June 15 with reduced capacity, while the Disneyland Hotel has not yet announced reopening plans. The Downtown Disney District is partially open with select shopping and restaurants.

Like so many places devasted by this pandemic, this “reopening” leaves many questioning whether it signifies a lasting bureaucratic micromanagement of consumer affairs, or a glimmer of hope that a return to normalcy may one day be attained. Under current conditions, local resident guests will be greeted with a two ID requirement for entry, one of which will include personal medical data on vaccine status. This “welcome” is yet another example of California’s top-down, one-size-fits-all approach to pandemic life, something which has alienated many residents from their beloved state. The Golden State recently lost Congressional House seats for the first time in modern history due to the last decade’s mass exodus of residents fleeing to other states that have fared better economically or handled the Covid crisis better.

If your summer vacation plans included a visit to see Mickey in Disneyland, but you live outside California, then consider visiting Orlando’s Disneyworld which re-opened last July. It may be cheaper for you as well. On average, rooms in Anaheim will cost the average traveler approximately $23.00 more per night compared to Orlando, or $135 vs $112 a night. That said, both Anaheim and Orlando’s average nightly hotel room rate are both down about 20% compared to the same time last year.

For the more adventurous traveler, Disneyland Shanghai, which attracts about 12 million guests per year, has been open for normal operations since May 2020 (reservations are required). Disneyland Paris partially reopened in May 2021 with full reopening scheduled for June 17, 2021. These overseas parks serve as a stark contrast to Disney’s more cautious approach to reopening in the U.S. Even under one corporate governance, a company’s local response to a global pandemic can look very different.

Family-Friendly Summer Vacation Ideas with a Warm Welcome

Fortunately, there are plenty of other equally fun options for your family this summer. If your children are begging to go on an adventure, and you don’t live in California, here is a sample of alternatives that are fully open:

  • Disney World:  In Orlando, Magic Kingdom Park was the most visited theme park in the world in 2019, with almost 21 million guests. The new VelociCoaster is scheduled to open this summer at nearby Universal’s Islands of Adventure. Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s Avator Flight of Passage is an immersive, animal-focused experience. At Universal Studios, you can immerse yourself in some of the top films and television shows like Harry Potter and The Simpsons. At Hollywood Studios, Toy Story Land and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge are very popular with children.
  • Dollywood: In the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, you can visit Dolly Parton’s theme park which has rides, music, and other family-friendly attractions. While you’re in the area, there is beautiful hiking and camping options, just watch out for bears.
  • Busch Gardens:  With amusement parks in Tampa, FL and Williamsburg, VA, Busch Gardens has thrilling rides, animals, and a host of family-friendly activities. Visit the Tampa beaches, go fishing in the gulf, or visit Colonial Williamsburg too for a taste of history.
  • Six Flags: There are 13 Six Flags theme parks across America with a universal season pass. If your family likes rollercoasters and thrill rides, visiting all 13 locations would be quite the bucket list adventure. Road trip anyone?
  • Silver Dollar City: This 1880s nostalgic theme park in Missouri’s Ozark mountains has more than 40 rides and attractions, as well as live entertainment.

There are dozens of other theme parks across the country. These are just a few ideas.

Plan Early, Book Early

Regardless of where you go this summer, we’re seeing a significant surge in hotel bookings right now across the board, from limited service to luxury accommodations. As we approach summer, we recommend booking accommodations as early as possible to ensure a lower rate, but the law of supply and demand is still in effect.

Popular beach, lake and mountain towns and cities across the U.S. are charging higher rates. If beach front hotels are too expensive, stay in a nearby suburb within driving distance to the beach or hotels near the airport. Alternatively, big cities like Las Vegas or New York City may be cheaper as those cities are eager for tourist dollars. New York fully reopens for business on July 1 and full-capacity Broadway shows return on September 14.

If you’re itching to jet set overseas, more than 75 countries are accepting vaccinated American tourists. Now may be the perfect time to take that bucket list trip overseas while prices remain low and availability high.

Health & Safety While Traveling

You and your families’ personal safety, health and wellness should always be top of mind when planning any form of travel, along with enhanced personal hygiene, avoiding large crowds and pandemic hot spots, and reviewing local health advisories and restrictions. Most airlines have invested heavily in the latest cabin air filtration systems and enhanced cleaning effort, so much so that air travel is an even safer form of public transformation. Plus, hotels, restaurants, and other venues are now cleaner than ever before to keep patrons safe.

As vaccination rates increase, and states allow large venues to fully reopen, travel and tourism will take off like a rocket ship. And as public confidence in travel increases, the entire hospitality, travel and tourism industries stand to greatly benefit. Don’t wait to take your family on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. There is no time like the present.

Memphis Tourism is partnering with existing live music events to designate them as additional Get Loud! activations throughout the year.

“Our goal is to create a unique opportunity to showcase Memphis music by putting silenced artists and musicians back to work and delivering the core motivator that drives visitors to the Memphis destination, and that is music,” said Kevin Kane, President & CEO of Memphis Tourism. “This activation of the Beale Street entertainment district will not only create activity on the street, but in turn, increase overall hotel occupancy, fill our restaurants and venues and extend the length of stay.”

Made possible by Tennessee Department of Tourist Development funding, Memphis Tourism and the State worked together to develop strategic initiatives that will motivate travel and bring visitors back to a state known around the world for multiple genres of music.

“The Soundtrack of America is made in Tennessee, and we’re excited to see our stages and venues filled with fans again and artists back to doing what they love,” said Commissioner Mark Ezell, Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. “Tourism is vital to our state’s economy. “EVERY STORY IS A SONG” MARKETING CAMPAIGN: GET LOUD. GET LIVE. GET HERE

The live music showcase on Beale Street will work in tandem with and be promoted via Memphis Tourism’s planned “Every Story is a Song” digital media campaign, targeting visitors in key drive markets within a 600-mile radius of the Home of the Blues, Soul & Rock ‘n’ Roll.  The soundtrack to the advertising campaign is a summer anthem penned and performed by Memphis artists at world famous Royal Studios, with Grammy award winning producer Boo

Mitchell as producer on the track. The GET LOUD! campaign anthem will be released via digital platforms in early Summer 2021.

“Our community is rooted in music, and the pandemic has made it hard for many of Memphis’ most creative voices to be heard over the last year, whether performing in venues or even creating new music in the studio,” said Boo Mitchell, a Grammy award winning record producer, musician, songwriter, audio engineer, and owner of the legendary Royal Studios in Memphis. “I have a tremendous amount of civic pride in Memphis. When I was approached about getting involved with this project to produce a song that was a musical invitation to visit our amazing city, I didn’t just say yes, I asked, when can we get started.”

Storytelling within the marketing campaign will be inclusive of all audiences through a variety of channels, emphasizing the current Memphis sound, while giving a nod to the legacy sound that made Memphis a world-famous music city.

“Through this music series and marketing campaign, Memphis Tourism is inviting all visitors, the uninitiated and the indoctrinated, to come be a part of our extended family, to share in our city’s stories and our songs,” said Regena Bearden, Chief Marketing Officer for Memphis Tourism. “We’ve all relished anecdotes from visitors who describe feeling a deep connection to the Memphis sound. It touches your soul, creating a familial feeling, echoing who we are as a city and a destination. When you visit, you become a part of our extended musical family, and you may want to dance too.”

The multi-channel digital campaign will focus on the 600-mile radius key drive markets that, driven by data and research, have demonstrated a solid return by generating hotel room night sales, attraction tickets, restaurant and retail sales. In 2019 Memphis & Shelby County welcomed 12.4 million visitors, accounting for a $3.65 billion economic impact in spending from domestic visitors alone. This spend generated $179.5 million in state tax receipts and $101 million in local tax receipts. The leisure and hospitality industry in Shelby County includes over 2-thousand businesses and supports 49-thousand jobs.

Anywhere you go in Memphis, there’s a story waiting to be told, a song that connects to your heart and stays with your soul. Visitors can make a long weekend of it and celebrate that spirit with live music citywide every day this summer, kicking off with the GET LOUD free concert series in Handy Park. With live music, legendary attractions and Beale Street – plus food that’ll feed your soul – planning a visit to Memphis for an unforgettable music experience is effortless with resources available at Memphis Travel, log on today and feel the Memphis beat.
