GUINEVERE TAKES A BOW

Guinevere, the long-established taste-making ‘hub’ of antique finds on the King’s Road, is to curate a special auction at Dreweatts on May 23rd, 2023 in celebration of its 60 years supplying antiques and decorative arts from around the world to its wide-ranging clientele. This celebratory event also affords an opportunity to mark an end of an era at one of London’s most loved dealers on the famous Kings Road in London, as they explore new opportunities and consider the next phase.

The family-run business was the brainchild of French-born Genevieve Weaver, who moved to London in the 1960s. Already a creative force as a hat designer, her passion for antiques was inspired by furnishing her own homes. Having purchased certain pieces to fit into her own interiors, she would then sell them on in order to recreate her ever-changing taste. Her move to Chelsea saw her develop her skills into a business and Guinevere was born as a shop on the Kings Road.

The main draw was the range of extraordinary finds sourced on Genevieve’s travels around the world. These rare and sometimes one-off pieces were a thrilling find to a London clientele and cemented Genevieve as a tastemaker, who set new trends and broke boundaries – something the company prides itself on continuing. Today Genevieve’s sons Kevin and Marc and Marc’s wife Heather Weaver continue to build on this creative foundation and strong passion that was instilled from the company’s beginnings, sourcing wonderful collections and one-off works from around the globe. The carefully chosen works include rare furniture, textiles, lighting, decorative works of art and curious antique pieces, as well as contemporary works that are out of the ordinary and always of exceptional quality.

The premises have expanded over the years and as well as being a ‘go to’ for interior designers and private clients looking to furnish their home or find a ‘gem’, Guinevere has caught the attention of celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow who raves about their famous window designs and the designer Valentino, who in an interview with the Evening Standard was asked “Who is in your secret address book”, to which he replied: “For gifts, I like Guinevere Antiques on the King’s Road.”

It is not only celebrities but well-known designers that see Guinevere as a wonderful resource, as they are renowned for offering the extraordinary. The many accolades and the company’s longevity are testament not only to Guinevere’s legacy, but also to the company’s progression, always remaining ‘current’ by staying ahead of the trend. This special auction will offer Guinevere a chance to champion what they’ve achieved, while they continue to evolve in the ever-changing digital landscape, as tastes change and demand soars for certain works and styles in a contemporary age. This means it will be the last chance to shop at Guinevere as we know it.

As you enter the premises you wander through expansive galleries on a mini ‘Grand Tour’, with rooms arranged as settings for dinner, drinks, relaxing or entertaining. The arrangements also change regularly, so you never have the same journey twice. Their awe-inspiring ‘settings’ speak for themselves, taking you on a foreign journey through various continents and history.

Commenting on the specially curated auction, Will Richards, Deputy Chairman of Dreweatts, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be holding the Guinevere sale, celebrating 60 years of this well-loved Kings Road institution. For generations Guinevere has been at the centre of London’s famous international antiques and interior design world. Famed for their fusion of cultural influences from around the world and range of periods from antiquity to modern and contemporary, they have a truly global client base. We are thrilled to be working with Kevin, Marc and Heather to celebrate this landmark!”

Commenting on celebrating 60 years with this special auction, Marc Weaver, said: “It would be impossible to let our anniversary pass without a celebration. For us this means an auction, a big party and a chance to reflect on the past and consider what lies ahead.”

A grand pair of French silvered and gilded bronze Pompeiian tripod torcheres in the sale are attributed to the French sculptor Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892). Barbedienne was considered one of the most significant casters of bronze works during the late 19th Century and the founder of one of the most important artistic foundries of the period. Championed for bringing artworks to the wider public, by initially creating miniatures of famous sculptures found in museums around the world, his business evolved into the creation of domestic works in bronze and other metals for the home, as well as huge public commissions for which he was awarded several honours. The ornate, yet stylish torcheres in the sale date from circa 1890 and carry and estimate of £5,000-£8,000.

A George IV carved giltwood wall mirror is believed to be in the manner of Irish makers Francis & John Booker of Dublin, the foremost glassmakers in Ireland. The business was established by John Booker Snr. in the 17th century and their reputation grew to extend to supplying the royal family and the wealthy of Ireland, alongside the wider community. Listed as ‘specialized in glass grinding and cutting’, they worked with leading wood carvers to create the bespoke frames that adorned them. On John Booker Snr’s death in 1750 his sons took on the business with great success. The mirror in the sale dates from circa 1830 and is in the classic ornate Booker style. It carries an estimate of £2,000-£3,000.

A set of four ‘en-grisaille’ oil paintings of winged putti representing the arts in the manner of Belgian artist Piat Joseph Sauvage (1744-1818) are also on offer. ‘En-grisaille’ is a historic technique of painting in neutral shades to imitate sculpture. It was usually used in large decorative schemes and was a stunning art form in its own right. Early known examples date back to the 13th century and some are still used today, with a wider colour palette. Piat Joseph Sauvage was a master in the art form, undertaking Royal and public commissions. This particular set of paintings dates from circa 1830 and is estimated to fetch £3,000-£5,000.

Guinevere also specializes in tapestries, from antique to contemporary and in the sale is a rare wool and silk historic tapestry. It depicts a scene from the life of one of the most daring military leaders in history, the Carthaginian general and statesman Hannibal (247-181 BC). The central panel depicts Hannibal deploying cattle with flaming horns at the Battle of Ager Falernus in 217AD. The tapestry is believed to be after 16th century designs by Francois Geubels (Flemish Fl.1546-1579) for Brussels workshops and is estimated to fetch £15,000-£25,000.

Among the contemporary works is a pair of silvered and lacquered leaf chairs by celebrated French artist Joy de Rohan Chabot. Inspired by nature she uses a honed laser-cut metal technique to create stunning furniture with seemingly suspended adornments, such as leaves and butterflies. They are sculpted as one piece, creating a stable and beautiful piece of hand-painted furniture. The chairs in the sale were created in 2018 and are estimated to fetch £1,200-£1,800.

Among smaller pieces in the sale is a Victorian silver plate novelty cruet by Gotscher & Co. Birmingham, in a design registered in 1886, which is estimated at £150-£250, a pair of 19th century Chinese flambe porcelain vases (estimate £1,500-£2,500), a pair of 20th century Italian glazed pottery models of leopards (estimate £3,000-£5,000) and a striking Chinese powder blue rectangular section gilt metal ‘gu’ vase mounted by the famous Escalier de Cristal in Paris, which first opened it shop in the Palais Royale in 1808. The vase dates from the late 19th Century and is estimated to fetch £800-£1,200.

ABOUT BOYGENIUS:

Once, when boygenius was on a road trip in Northern California, Phoebe asked Julien and Lucy to listen to a very important song, and pushed play, and got on the freeway headed in the wrong direction. The song was “Trapeze Swinger” by Iron & Wine—about a dead person telling the living how he wants to be remembered. It was impossible to interrupt this ten-minute-long song. Because of how the exits were spaced, “Trapeze Swinger” added an hour to their travel time. Phoebe felt like an idiot. Lucy turned that drive into the song “Leonard Cohen.”

What happens when you see an hour-long detour, not as a detour, but as part of the trip—the part where you listened to “Trapeze Swinger” while driving the opposite direction from your destination. Does that become the most valuable hour on the trip? Does time transform into something other than alternating “valuable” and “not valuable” hours? What if the right song can dislodge, for its duration, this piece of capitalist furniture?

the record started in June 2020. A week after Punisher came out, Phoebe sent Lucy and Julien a demo of “Emily I’m Sorry” and asked if they could be a band again—for the first time since those five short months in 2018, when the boygenius EP was conceived, written, recorded, released, and toured. Nobody had wanted to be the first to ask—to make such a demand on everyone’s time. Now, Julien made a Google Drive folder called “dare I say it?”, and everyone flooded it with potential songs.

the record is about recapturing joy—about the wasteful detour that turns out not to be the most important thing. Julien wrote “$20” after realizing that what she wanted for the band was More Sick Riffs. It’s hard to say such things as an individual artist, when it’s your music, soon to be collapsed with your identity. You don’t want to seem like—or be—a superficial meathead. But it’s things like sick riffs that made you truly giddy when you were first learning how to play, making music with your friends “for no reason.” Why do non-reasons sometimes feel so much more urgent than reasons?

the record is about making time, and finding new ways to record it, over time. The opening track, “Without You Without Them,” picks up where the EP left off—with “Ketchum, ID,” and an old-school Carter Family vibe—and it’s a song about picking up where something else left off, about everyone who came before, and made the person you love now. Lucy had been singing this song for years, while she did the dishes. A recurring theme: what we see about each other is a tiny fraction of a huge glacier that shifts over time. On a historical scale, that means you were shaped over hundreds of years, by people you’ll never know. On a human scale, who you are is constantly revealed, as you live, to the people who are paying attention. History loses its mystery. (Lucy: “I find comfort in knowing that I’m going to know you two a long time, and get to see the different iterations of the person you are.”) Because it’s disclosed over time, truth is constantly changing: the theme of “True Blue.” It comes together and disperses, like planetary formations.

The first thing boygenius did after getting vaccinated last April was meet up to write music together. That’s where the record changes. The first four songs were written individually. The rest are conversations. Sometimes, each person takes a verse, and writes their own version—like on “Satanist,” which Julien, who was raised religious, wrote, after watching the documentary “Hail Satan?.” She could, she thought, be a Satanist—and would her friends join her for this phase in the journey? In other words: “Do you want to be in my life a long time?” Or, as Phoebe put it: “Would you still love me if I was a bug?” Isn’t that what time is—the thing that makes everyone into a bug?

Lucy first sang “We’re In Love” a cappella to Phoebe, in Phoebe’s bed, on New Years Day in 2022. They were holding each other’s faces: a function of totally legal drugs. Lucy was weeping and did not blink. Later, in the studio, Julien thought the song was too… long. In retrospect, Julien hadn’t been ready to engage. When the truth sank in, the truth of a love song, she went away for six hours. (Julien: “It’s still a learning process to know the difference between being scrutinized and being seen.”) Then she came back. She was ready.

The album was recorded in January 2022, at Shangri-La, in Malibu: ten-hour days every day, for a month. Nobody questioned the schedule. (Julien: “We are all at least one type of the same psycho. The Venn diagrams overlap in ‘Every day for a month.’”) At one point, Julien was freaking out because there weren’t a thousand guitar tracks on “Emily I’m Sorry.” Lucy comforted her by pointing out that Phoebe was definitely going to rewrite that song a thousand times: the neuroses smoothed each other out. Back home, Julien made a thousand guitar tracks and emailed them to Catherine Marks, the co-producer, while Phoebe re-recorded “Revolution 0” and changed the words at the last minute. She “did the Flaubert.” (Julien: “That’s the old mot juste, my guy.”) The mot juste was “spiraling.”

Now the record is on the sound system and you’re merging onto the freeway. Glen Campbell’s guitar is doing the Sad Beatles, as the wrong exit comes up on the left. Soon you’ll be at the ocean, which Julien still sort of thinks is a creek, and the Venn diagrams are overlapping, and the years are rushing by in descending order. This interchange has way more than four levels. 2018 rushes past, and the EP—there’s Phoebe, and her dog!—and the illegal fireworks, and your mother’s father’s mother. Then the track changes, and it’s time for the overdue U-turn that isn’t actually overdue, and “spiraling” is the mot juste and the crack in your plan is where the light comes in. Why is this song is so long? How can it take this much time? Can we afford it? And meanwhile the time keeps unfolding, until the only think you had to sacrifice was the idea of sacrifice: everything was the important thing. Six hours later, you’re ready to engage, and 2023 is here, and the record is now.  – Elif Bautman, January 2023

Joseph Kojo Hoggar's Vanities exhibition at the Christophe Person Gallery via 360 MAGAZINE.

Joseph Kojo Hoggar – VANITIES

The CHRISTOPHE PERSON Gallery is pleased to host Joseph Kojo Hoggar’s first monographic exhibition. Joseph Kojo Hoggar was born in Ghana in 1999, freshly graduated in Visual Arts from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He is one of the brightest elements of his generation.

The Vanities exhibition reveals his work inspired by the Old Masters classical works of art history and his fascination for the figure of the smoker. His first year of study at KNUST, Joseph Hoggar, devoted it to the theme of the cigarette smoker, the tobacco roller, and the consequences of smoking on his own body: red eyes and black lips. His observations support his perception, widespread in Africa, that tobacco makes you impure. He included these marks in his compositions, and his first works attempted to represent the interior of smokers’ houses. Subsequently, his paintings were inspired by the still lifes of the old masters, loaded with symbolic objects similar to those of the Dutch Vanities.

There are objects of curiosities, lanterns, fruits, oranges, symbols of exoticism as it was perceived in the 16th and 17th centuries and skulls, symbols of death in all civilizations. This fascination for European Old Masters emanates as much from his university courses as from his personal research.

The Water Maid is an interpretation of The Milkmaid by Vermeer. The figure of the maid is pouring water from a glass container in a white ceramic bowl. Water in most cultures is symbolic of purification. On the table are placed other symbolic objects such as an empty wine glass, which symbolizes fragility and death; fruits, perishable foodstuffs, already wasted; bottled wine, a phallic image of one who lives a wasted life. Finally, the skull on the table is representative of the fatality of life. The two ends of butts in front of the skull put the final point of the representation of a woman in the service of a man, whom she deludes himself that he will be able to change his life for the better, when we have all the clues that he wastes his.

VANITIES exhibition by Joseph Kojo HOGGAR will take place from March 16 to April 8, 2023, opening on March 16 at 6 p.m. (registration required).

Esther Perbandt has to be one of the most dynamic fashionistas of the modern day. Dressed in all black like the omen, she breathes fire into anyone in her line of sight. In fact, It’s one of the reasons why we all fell in love with her on Making The Cut. Recently, we literally bumped into her during a recent trip to Berlin. She’s an impressionable soul who breathes new life into someone who has been depleted by the daily grind or trauma. She moves like water, taking on the shape of whatever space she fills. “I would never have applied to the show because it’s really commercial,” Esther says of how she got on Making The Cut, “I was known in Berlin for being the arty Esther doing big fashion shows and theater. The word commercial was a no-go for me.” “When I read it (the invitation), I was like no way, not me,” luckily she didn’t answer right away, “but then I said: ‘Esther If you think twice, this is exactly what you need. Finally, the international attention.’ I was working my ass off at the time but it wasn’t really working.” The Queen of Black may not have won her Amazon Prime contest for a million dollars, but she’s certainly gained a million fans across the globe. Her supportive nature, loyalty, and tenacity have led to numerous collaborations, including the first-ever jewelry capsule with Adidas.

She admits that she isn’t as sustainable as she had hoped to be as a designer, but at least she is aware of her shortcomings. She does, however, state that she will drive two hours for locally sourced materials such as zippers made in Germany. “I have the goal to become sustainable or maybe 100% sustainable in ten years,” Esther states, “the vision of my brand in ten years is very digital, so I’m playing a lot with digital fashion…and also using it as a tool to become more sustainable.”

You’d have to be a fool to believe that this unpolished, meticulously engineered black diamond won’t have her moment to shine. Someone who has struggled on her path to success will eventually prosper. “People love to invite me to speak because I’m very honest,” Esther admits, “I talk about how bad it was sometimes that I was sleeping on the floor because I had to rent my apartment to get some money in, or how I had to take out large bank loans that I was almost unable to repay. But this is the life of a designer, and it was a decision. And it was also a decision not to have a family because I knew this job would be 24/7, and I wanted it and still want it.” Her passion for fashion, and meticulous attention to detail, combined with her monochromatic ensembles accented with gold accessories, will keep her on top. It is the reason why we celebrate her. Why we adore her. And how she takes on tasks at the drop of a hat – two collections per year, countless magazine covers, and speaking engagements in addition to Vogue editorials. Esther also held a solo exhibition of her artworks last year. “All of them were inspired by my collection. I used the same techniques and the same materials, but just created some 3D sculptures which you can put on the wall,” She explains. “I can’t focus solely on fashion for 365 days a year; I need some distractions,” Esther confesses. “So this art is part of it, and I’m hoping that this distraction will get me back into fashion, which is exactly what happened.” With so much talent at her disposal, she will stand the test of time, strangling fast fashion with her bare hands, just like her Avant trademarks. Her heart and keen ability to visually tell a story is what will propel her career forward.

LEIPZIG

Since 2022/2023, Leipzig, the seventh-most populous city in Germany with more than 600,000 residents, is a destination worth seeing! In the state of Saxony, it is the city with the highest population. Leipzig is encircled by water, parks, and floodplain forest. Thanks to its numerous bike paths and its extensive system of small rivers and canals, it is easy to get around the green city on foot, by bike, by boat or canoe – alternatively, there is a complex public bus and tram network.

Base Camp

When we arrived, we immediately checked into Felix Suiten. Undisputed accommodation, carrying loft like suites that felt like a spacious home. With massive windows and a kitchenette, it was my chance to catch up on some cooking. Our room was right in front of the city center, which was loaded with shopping, restaurants, and nightlife.

With the giant Ferris wheel just outside our third-floor window, we were charmed by the chatter and loud laughter. And if it didn’t offer us the excitement, the music from the fourth floor lounge in tandem with the restaurant aroma prompted us to join the party. Regardless of the frigid temperatures of late December, we spotted several on bicycles, traveling by taxi and/or tram. In fact, much of the crowd seemed physically fit while they drank hot apple cider and swallowed delicious fingerfoods.

The Art Scene

Leipzig is recognized for its exceptional art and fascinating outdoor recreation environment. It is often referred to as a city of vibrant trade, business, and music. 360 Magazine’s guided visit of Spinnerei offered a glance at this dynamic art scene. Spinnerei, formerly the largest cotton mill of continental Europe, is now home to galleries, exhibition halls, and artist studios. Since its decommissioning in 1992, the factory has been subject to constant change. Artists have developed the cotton mill into a real cosmos of art. Meanwhile, about 100 of them have their own studios at the Spinnerei, along with 11 galleries and the non-profit space Halle 14. A key figure of the so-called “New Leipzig School” is artist Neo Rauch, who was one of the first to set up his studio there.

Life in Leipzig

Leipzig is quite special, both in terms of commerce and industry, as well as in terms of music, culture, and history. There are several colleges, universities and research centers in this city, which allows for a very diversified city. The University of Leipzig is the second-oldest university in Germany with a founding date of 1409.

According to an interview between Dana Marschner and our president, Lowery, Mrs. Marschner stated that her favorite aspect of Leipzig was the close proximity of just about everything. She continued by highlighting the constant transformation of the city that never stands still, spreading good vibes and offering a high quality of your stay!

Nearby is an eclectic 82-piece eco-friendly refuge for eco-junkies looking for a greener getaway, Waelderhaus. This lodge features a 3-star rating, rustic façade with industrial interior finishings. Overall, the accommodations are state-of-the-art, intuitive, and have the right amount of technology to engage the senses that begin at its science center on the ground zero. The whole area is adventure-oriented for those seeking refuge from the bustle, the infested noise as well as the light pollution. You can participate in canoeing, cycling, walking, or climbing.
