The Balmain Festival

BALMAIN MEN SS2020: THE BALMAIN FESTIVAL

Highlighting once again the inseparable intertwining of music with Olivier Rousteing’s singular style, Balmain’s presentation of its Men’s Spring 2020 Collection formed part of la Fête de la Musique, Paris’ annual all-night celebration of music.

Reflecting Rousteing’s desire to democratize and modernize fashion, the June 21st outdoor presentation was open to as many members of the Balmain Army as possible, with over 2,000 attendees expected to celebrate the longest day of the year at a special festival site set up inside the French capital’s historic, 400-year-old Jardin des Plantes. Rousteing’s designs will be an integral element of this unique music celebration, with the Men’s runway offerings seamlessly mixing with festival contributions from a host of musical talents pulled together by Olivier Rousteing.

All invitees were asked to join Rousteing, Balmain and the music artists in supporting (RED). Their donations, as well as profits from sales of limited-edition Balmain festival merchandise and food and drink offerings, were dedicated to supporting (RED)’s efforts to end HIV/AIDS.

Other partners helping to make possible this unique fashion-music festival event are Diamond Foundry, Puma, Balmain, Paris Hair Couture, L’Oreal, Alterfood, Au Top, Bagnard, Cyril Lignac, Hxouse, Le Bar, Stohrer and Urban Act.

“As my team and I planned for today’s concert-runway, we aimed to keep it simple, concentrating on one clear message: our belief in the possibility of a more inclusive, joyful future for fashion.

Obviously, we all know that fashion still has a lot of work to do on many fronts, including moving past its long failure to celebrate all members of our society. Yes, presentations have become slightly more diverse in recent seasons—but, while campaigns and runways might have been able to begin the shift towards what our world actually looks like, there seems to be little inclination to democratize other areas of our industry. For example, attendance at shows continues to be restricted to the same lucky few, season after season. With doors closed and filters imposed, only a small number of those who dream about fashion and design are actually given the chance to participate.

It often seems to me that the fashion world is a bit confused about some very basic definitions, redefining “luxury” as hyper-exclusive and “aspirational” as restricted to a tiny elite—but I believe that fashion’s dreams should never be limited to just one small group. Fashion needs to be both inclusive and aspirational. My team and I are hoping that by sending invitations to thousands who would otherwise not be able to view a Paris fashion show, we can help start a needed conversation about modifying traditions and exploring new ways of opening up runways. Changes could be inspired in part by social media’s communication model, which has allowed fashion houses to directly engage with a new generation of design lovers. I’m convinced that the payoff of welcoming and incorporating a new youthful energy and fresh ideas into our collection and presentations would be enormous.

With an optimistic outlook like that, it’s perhaps no surprise that much of today’s offering looks to the early ‘80s for inspiration. For that era was marked by more than just the Easter-egg pastels, soft denims, graphic monochromatic patterns, and American-Gigolo tailoring that you see channeled into today’s looks—there was also an intoxicating, invigorating feeling of new possibilities in the air, as music, design and fashion merged into fresh methods of telling stories, relying on new types of platforms to break barriers, imagine a better future and communicate in surprising novel ways.

Today, I feel a bit of the same energy and optimism repeating itself, as we begin to push back for needed changes at the same time that a host of new entertainment platforms—from Apple TV, Netflix, Amazon—also offer new possibilities, while streaming countless series, many focusing on better, more inclusive futures. The Balmain atelier has helped me look to this optimistic future by referencing and building our incredible past. Our craftsmen have relied on classic skills and techniques to create some impressive pieces that do not aim to duplicate past glories, but instead prepare for future excitement.”

It’s a Shenseea Summer, and we’re just happy to be here…

About Shenseea

In less than three years, Shenseea has ascended through Jamaica’s dancehall ranks to become one of the genre’s most sought-after artists. She broke through the scene with her viral single “Loodi” feat. Vybez Kartel; the following year, Shenseea toured Europe with dancehall superstar Sean Paul. In 2019, Shenseea was the first Jamaican artist to be signed to a major label (Interscope Records) and released her first label single “Blessed” featuring Tyga. The track, which came with a music video, was praised by the likes of Hypebeast, FADER, PAPER Magazine, VIBE and more; it quickly racked up over 1,000,000 views overnight. While at work on her debut album, Shenseea has been feeding her fans with one-off singles like “Bad Habit,”, “Good Comfort,” “Sidechick Song” and more, racking millions of plays across DSPs and Youtube. With a Billboard “Up Next” title under her belt and “rising” profile by the New York Times, The Guardian and more, Shenseea is rapidly proving that she is a true artist to watch on an international scale.

HEY VIOLET debut new video for “CLOSE MY EYES”

Fresh off a headline mini tour of the U.S., Hey Violet premiere the video for their new track Close My Eye today on Vevo. Watch it HERE. Shot in Los Angeles, the video was directed by Marcella Cytrynowicz who also lensed the video for the bands recent single Better By Myself.

Close My Eyes, which was written by Hey Violet with Sean Kennedy, Tim Anderson, and Aron Forbes (the latter two who co-produced), is the second of four new tracks the band is set to release throughout the spring and summer. The first, Better By Myself, was released in April, along with an official video that can be watched HERE. Idolator called Better By Myself as catchy as it is relatable, while Celeb Mix says the song’s mid-tempo beat and addictive chorus will leave the listener singing [it] all day. Watch Hey Violet perform Better By Myself live at Capitol Studios HERE.

Close My Eyes is essentially about living in a fantasy land, says front woman Rena Lovelis. It’s about the idea of still wanting to be with an ex who has already moved on. There’s definitely a level of denial that goes into being in that sort of headspace because you’re basically rejecting the present reality and not allowing yourself to move forward. The song sounds very calm and chill but in the lyrical content there’s an air of tension because of that refusal to accept things as they are.

Hey Violet’s 2017 debut album From the Outside featured the singles Guys My Age, which has amassed over 250 million global streams, Break My Heart, and Hoodie which is approaching 200 million streams. The album racked up critical praise, including accolades from The New York Times, which called it one of this year’s best and most provocative pop albums. Stereogum noted that it has plenty of attitude thanks to Lovelis vocal and lyrical presence, and NYLON declared, I challenge you to find a debut album as explosive and technicolored as Hey Violet’s From The Outside(the album) pulses with cheeky hooks and middle fingers to the status quo. Lead singer Rena Lovelis’ voice is arena-shaking. You’re in for one hell of a ride.

Over the past few years, Hey Violet, which is Rena Lovelis, her sister Nia Lovelis (drums), and Casey Moreta (lead guitar) have steadily built an engaged fanbase with their powerful, immaculately crafted alt-pop songs. Guys My Age was named one of the Best Songs of 2016 by The New York Times, who called it teen-pop’s revenge: an urgent dark song about sexual rebellion and one of the 20 Best Songs of 2016 by V Magazine. In 2017, Hey Violet was also nominated for an iHeart Radio award for Best Underground Alternative Band, dubbed an Artist Primed For A Breakout by Billboard, and named Artist To Watch by The Guardian, PopCrush, and more. The band has racked over half a billion streams worldwide, sold out their North American headline tour and performed on both The Late Late Show With James Corden and Late Night With Seth Meyers.

Mark Diamond “Hummingbird”

Rising Seattle singer, songwriter and guitarist Mark Diamond unveils his latest song “Hummingbird” today via Stardog Records/Republic Records.

Listen to “Hummingbird” HERE!

“Hummingbird” arrives hot off the heels of Diamond’s debut EP Hummingbird One released in the spring, which Ones To Watch hailed as “an impeccable EP filled with indie-pop perfection.” Hummingbird One features fan-favorite tracks “Steady” and “Road.” Not to mention, Diamond has amassed almost 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify and counting.

Of “Hummingbird,” Mark says, “This song was the birth of a new version of myself. It was letting a side of me out that I didn’t know was there. I’ll never forget that moment when I started singing the melody. Honestly, I think I just started laughing at first because it felt so freeing and different than anything I’d done before. I think as creatives and as people, we all have multiple versions of ourselves. It’s important to let some of those see the light of day sometimes.”

Stay tuned for more new music from Mark Diamond out this summer!

At 25 years old, Mark Diamond is a Seattle native who grew up listening to Tom Petty, Hootie & The Blowfish, The Beatles, R.E.M and Robbie Williams with his dad in his 1969 Chevy Malibu. Up until recently, Mark, now based in Los Angeles, was living in Seattle and working at a coffee shop for the last four years. He has been hard at work on his upcoming project with his debut song, “Steady,” leading the way. The song is included in a very large arsenal of finished tracks that he completed in 24 days with talented writer and producer Richard Craker, writing and recording in both London and Los Angeles. With his music, Mark wants to make people feel every emotion possible. “I have never had more fun making music in my entire life. Music should make people feel good more than it makes them feel bad. Not necessarily ‘happy’ songs, but songs that make you feel better about life than when you started listening to it.”

Jamie N Commons

British singer/songwriter Jamie N Commons releases a new song today.  “Start Again” was written by Commons and Sam de Jong and produced by Sam de Jong and is available now at all digital retailers. Commons will perform a headline show at New York City’s Mercury Lounge on July 25th before heading out on a five-city trek supporting Kodaline. Tickets are on sale now at www.jamiencommons.com. Listen to “Start Again” here.

Commons recently partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and advertising agency M/H VCCP for Runaway Train 25, a cross-industry initiative to reinvent the search for missing children in the U.S.  In the 1990s, the original “Runaway Train” video by Soul Asylum, NCMEC and director Tony Kaye featured 36 missing kids. After it aired on MTV, 21 of those missing kids were recovered. Commons, along with Skylar Grey and Gallant, recorded a new version of the award-winning song and shot a new video for the track. Watch “Runaway Train” here.

The KIDinaKORNER/Interscope Records artist released the video for his current single “Won’t Let Go” last month and is working on his first full length album which will be released later this year.   “Start Again,” and “Won’t Let Go” follows the release of “Paper Dreams” which came out last November. This new music showcases a new direction for the musician that is heavily influenced by 80s pop.  Still evident is Commons’ bluesy-rock sensibility,  as showcased in his previous  releases “Rumble And Sway” and “Lead Me Home”, with a hint of what’s to come.

Born in Bristol in the late 80s and following that with a stint in Chicago, Commons returned to England set on a music career studying at Goldsmiths in London, notorious for its host of luminary alumni.  Commons released The Baron EP in 2011 followed by his KIDinaKORNER/Interscope debut Rumble And Sway EP in 2013 showcasing his whiskey-laced growl.  Commons’ workmanlike approach has been fed further by the work he’s doing for others. Among his successes, he co-wrote the hit “Jungle” for X Ambassadors with Alex Da Kid and Sam Harris, and toured with the band. He also had a Beats by Dre ad, and was featured on Eminem’s ‘MMLP2’ album. Commons won Music Week’s Sync Artist Of The Year in 2016. This past year Commons composed the music for the summer blockbuster “Skyscraper” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. These experiences opened his ears to a spectrum of genres, making him more interested in the path pop music is taking.

Below is a complete list of upcoming tour dates for Jamie N Commons supporting Kodaline:

Martina McBride

Martina McBride’s global charity initiative, Team Music Is Love (TMIL), hosted a wildly successful event at The Fairgrounds Nashville on Friday, June 7th to benefit the local community. This event included a food drive, book giveaway and storytelling, a diaper giveaway, and an essential item giveaway, which included items such as tooth brushes and toothpaste.

The Nashville Fairground neighborhood was selected as the location for this event due to its status as a food desert in Nashville – most people who live there lack easy access to affordable fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, as the closest grocery store is a two mile walk away.

To help, TMIL, in partnership with One Gen Away, brought in a truckload of over 20,000 pounds of locally sourced fresh produce and locally saved canned goods during the food drive, providing approximately 10,000 meals which will feed 380 families. This incredible feat will surely impact the local Nashville community given that 1 in 6 adults and 1 in 5 children in metro Nashville are food insecure – meaning they lack reliable access to nutritious food and may survive from fast food and convenience stores.

TMIL also partnered with The Word Wagon to give summer reading books to kids – two low income Nashville metro schools will receive free books – and partnered with the Nashville Diaper Bank to give diapers to families in need.

Of course, this event wouldn’t have been a success without the help of volunteers. People from 20 different states and 3 different countries showed up to help give away flowers, balloons, lemonade, and fill grocery carts with fresh foods and canned good staples.

L-R: John Janick (CEO, Interscope Records), Baroline (Senior Director A&R, Interscope Records), Ann Marie, Mikkey Halsted (Manager, The City Group Entertainment), Nicole Wyskoarko (EVP Urban Operations Interscope Records), Joie Manda (EVP, Interscope Records).

Ann Marie hails from Englewood, a neighbourhood on the South Side of Chicago. She hit it big with “Handle It,” which came off Tripolar, her third body of work following Unfuckwithable and her self-titled debut Ann Marie. The song went on to rack up over 10 Million plays on Apple Music. 2019 kicked off with a bang for Ann Marie with smash single “Secret,” on follow up project Tripolar 2. The slinky R&B track featured rapper YK Osiris and accumulated over 35 Million views on Youtube in less than 5 months. With her raw storytelling and honey-like tones, Ann Marie began to see her numbers grow. Now celebrating over 100,000 streams per day on Apple Music, an additional 450k+ streams on Spotify, Ann Marie has earned her place as one of music’s most intriguing new artists.
