Jimmy Wong – Actor + Musician

James “Jimmy” Wong, is an American actor and musician best known for his 2011 music video, “Ching Chong: Asians in the Library Song” and for his role as Ted in the web series Video Game High School. His newest project with Disney XD, Polaris Primetime will debut July 2017.

Wong garnered national news coverage in March 2011, when he uploaded his music video, “Ching Chong: Asians in the Library Song” to YouTube. He created the video as a response to a UCLA student’s vlog rant against Asian students using mobile phones in the UCLA library, one which MSNBC qualified as “offensive.” NPR suggested that Wong’s video response was one that “effectively turned the tables on the original rant,” offering an alternative method of defense against cyberbullying. Wong later said in an MSNBC interview that while he was initially frustrated by the video rant, he realized that humor offered a better response, as he hoped to “put a positive spin on all of it.” The video has seen a resurgence due to the current political climate. Wong is very passionate about social issues and politics and is something that drives him to create every day. He aims to create justice for all and especially for representation in Hollywood as an Asian American.

Prior to releasing the video, Wong began spearheading the YouTube world, collaborating with other largescale YouTubers, including the very successful Joey Graceffa. This period proved to be invaluable. At the end of 2010, the web series Feast of Fiction was born, a cooking show dedicated to making food from movies, TV shows, cartoons, video games, and other fictional properties. The show kicked off strongly with the first video passing the 100,000-subscriber mark almost immediately. Due to it’s success, media company Tastemade partnered with the successful web series which allowed for guests like Grace Helbig, Hannah Hart, Anthony Padilla from Smosh, and Rosanna Pansino from Nerdy Nummies.

In 2016 Wong was asked to host the pilot for a gaming show, Polaris Primetime, on Disney XD. Disney XD is creating a new channel  block, similar to Adult Swim or Teen Nick, called Disney XP that will air this show and others like it exclusively daily from 9PM to 3AM. Polaris Primetime is a gaming variety show with guests from all across the YouTube and TV world. Special guests that have already been on the show include Nolan Gould (Modern Family) and Marcus Scribner (Blackish).

LOVE + OTHER FORMS OF PAIN

LOVE AND OTHER FORMS OF PAIN

ALEPH Projects @ Beit Kandinof  |  Group Exhibition

July 1 – August 1, 2017

Artists: Eden Mitsenmacher, Eliott Paquet, Mit Borrás and Yoni Passy

ALEPH Projects is pleased to present “LOVE AND OTHER FORMS OF PAIN”.

Hosted at Beit Kandinof, the group exhibition features four young artists, Israeli and international, whose video works face the notions of love and defeat, stimulation and obsession in times of digitized communication.

The Israeli / American artist Eden_Mitsenmacher videos and new media works are frequently dealing with longing and loneliness. In “Back to Reality” (2016), the artist is recorded singing the 90’s hit “Back To Life” of Soul II Soul as it is rhythmed by smartphone notifications. Mitsenmacher’s “singing-to-the-mirror-while-switching-and-forgetting-words” version of the song is voice-overing a dreamy artificial animated image of a storm cloud. As Eden Mitsenmacher states: “hyper-worlds, built from cultural stereotypes and clichés, pushed to the brink of emotional overload”.

In “Partage (Clothilde)” (2016), the French artist Eliott_Paquet transcribes his last conversations over social media with his ex-girlfriend. The dialogues, translated to Chinese and narrated by a computer speech software, are set up in a 3d rendered environment of an ocean where two suns are crossing each other paths before setting down.

Liquid Marble” (2017) by Spanish artist Mit_Borrás, depicts a marble surface slowly swirling into a storm. The cold still stone is animated to portray a dramatic scenery of trapping movement and dizziness, pulling forces. Next but at the same time opposite to the linear and silence of it, the work “Techno Light” (2016) displays a short brutal house music beat looping endlessly with flashing lights.

Israeli artist Yoni_Passy’s “Never the Same” (2017) is a 14 hours length video, composed of over 25,000 still images that the artist collected on the Internet over the course of the last 12 years. Taking different shapes throughout the years- the artist’s blog “Internet My Love”, and later the online show “Never the Same” (2015)- the volume acts as an epic mosaic portrait, a compulsive manifestation and a prism to the human condition in relation to imagery inflation as it is projecting landscapes, pornography anonymous family archive pictures and many more in a random order.

“LOVE AND OTHER FORMS OF PAIN” is the first collaboration between ALEPH Projects and Beit Kandinof. The exhibition is accompanied by a special sale offering a collection of affordable prints and magazines picked and curated by ALEPH Editions.

The Untitled Space gallery is pleased to present “SECRET GARDEN: The Female Gaze on Erotica” a group exhibition of female identifying artists exploring figurative works of nudes and erotic art. Curated by Indira Cesarine, the exhibit will be on view from June 27th – July 30th and will include works of painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, pottery, sculpture, collage, mixed media and video. The exhibit title is inspired by the book, “My Secret Garden”, published in 1973 by sex positive feminist author Nancy Friday who was instrumental in addressing taboos revolving around female sexuality in the early 70s and an important figure of the feminist sexual liberation movement. Through historical works of pioneering feminist artists such as Betty Tompkins and Joan Semmel, to that of emerging contemporary female artists such as Andrea Mary Marshall, India Munuez, Myla Dalbesio, Katie Commodore, and Leah Schrager, SECRET GARDEN presents works by taboo shattering artists who fearlessly address sexual themes in their art and celebrate freedom of expression.

Along with the legalization of birth control in the 1960’s came a profound shift in attitudes towards women’s sexuality and the freedom of sexual expression. The sexual revolution celebrated the erotic as a normal part of life, and denounced conservative attitudes that it should be repressed by a patriarchal society, religion or state. From a feminist perspective the movement focused on a woman’s right to choose her sexual partners and preferences free from outside interference or judgment. As women’s sexuality was redefined, many artists of the era, including Betty Tompkins and Joan Semmel, addressed these themes in their works, and fought against censorship and oppression.

Since the inception of the sexual liberation movement women have been faced with polarizing views on sexuality, including pornography and erotica, and it’s place within feminism. Through the highly documented feminist sex wars, which many historians believe attributed to the decline of second wave feminism, came the rise of the sex positive movement, which embraced women’s sexual freedom as central to women’s liberation. While the women’s liberation movement is often been equated with sexual liberation, the fight continues against the double standards that inhibit women from enjoying their sexuality freely and without judgment. Despite decades of “liberation” contemporary feminist artists today continue to address these themes, to explore the dichotomies of contemporary society and challenge the double standards that linger. The battle with censorship may have shifted from film to the internet, yet artists continue to grapple with to the constraints of conservative positions on depictions of nudity and sexually explicit works. The artists of SECRET GARDEN push social and political boundaries with artworks that boldly challenge the status quo and exemplify a new wave of women’s sexual liberation.

“I feel it is an important time to present an exhibition of female artists who are resisting oppressive structures and climates by championing sex positive feminism. With the new political right, we have ushered in a conservative era, which attempts to challenge many liberties we have grown accustomed to including women’s reproductive rights and the legality of birth control. The importance of censorship-free, sexually liberated art has regained significance as women today continue to battle for equality and freedom of expression.” – Indira Cesarine

Ai Weiwei: It’s always the others

Starting in September at the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne, Chinese artist Ai Weiwei is taking over the whole of the Palais de Rumine with more than 30 often monumental works.

Recent and monumental pieces : Ai Weiwei, one of the most significant and influential artists of the last decade, is back in Switzerland. After his very first European solo show at the Bern Kunsthalle in 2004, the Chinese artist has once again accepted an invitation from Bernard Fibicher, director of the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne (mcb-a). For this exhibition – the last at mcb-a on its present site, before the move to PLATFORME 10 – Ai Weiwei is throwing a party, with works spilling out of the exhibition rooms into the Palais de Rumine’s public spaces and the museums of archaeology and history, zoology, geology and numismatics.

From 22 September 2017 to 28 January 2018, the exhibition Ai Weiwei: It’s Always the Others will bring together more than 30 works dating from 1995 to the present in the majestic rooms of the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts – as well as in all the Palais de Rumine’s other museums. The Zoology Museum, for example, will be hosting a dragon 50 metres long, suspended over visitors’ heads. Monumental in scale but subtle in its use of silk and bamboo, this installation has only been shown once before, in the New Industries Building, a disused warehouse that once served as a workshop for prisoners in Alcatraz. The traditional symbol of Chinese imperial power, the dragon as appropriated by Ai Weiwei becomes a sign of personal freedom. The individual kites making up its body carry quotes from imprisoned or forcibly exiled political activists including Nelson Mandela, Edward Snowden – and Ai Weiwei.

Works in porcelain, wood, aluminium, marble, jade, glass, bamboo and silk, together with wallpaper, photographs, videos and a film, testify to the rich variety of Ai Weiwei’s oeuvre and his profound knowledge of his country’s cultural tradition. At the same time, however – and here we detect a spirit akin to that of Marcel Duchamp – in a playful or iconoclastic way he rechannels his traditional motifs, methods and materials into a critique, overt or covert, of the Chinese political system. His most recent works bear on the troubling complexity of international issues including economic dependency and refugee flows. This exhibition at the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne hails a true all-rounder: a remarkable visual artist, an encyclopaedic mind, a gifted transmitter of ideas and a man coming to grips with the world’s major problems. Ai Weiwei may well be the first truly “global” artist.

One of the show’s most spectacular works is the vast field of handpainted porcelain sunflower seeds that provide its Sunflower Seeds title. Ai Weiwei had 100 million of them made – 150 tonnes – by 1600 men and women workers in the factories of Jingdezhen in China, and 10 tonnes will be spread over mcb-a’s biggest room. China’s favourite nibble during the Cultural Revolution, sunflower seeds had a universally obvious symbolic value: like sunflower plants, the citizens of the People’s Republic of China were turning their heads towards their sun, Mao Zedong. The ironic implications of this installation lie in the way it was made, at the opposite pole from “Made in China” mass production: each seed is hand-painted and thus unique, and the political message is unambiguous.
