LOEWE FOUNDATION

CHANCE ENCOUNTERS V

3 DECEMBER – 31 JANUARY

For Art Basel Miami Beach 2019, the LOEWE FOUNDATION will present the fifth exhibition in its Chance Encounters series, bringing together artists from various disciplines in unexpected conversations. This year British artist Hilary Lloyd will present a major site-specific textile, sound and video installation that will engage in dialogue with the monumental 18th-century Portuguese granary permanently installed. Large-scale ceramic sculptures by Ewen Henderson will also occupy the space.

‘The Chance Encounters exhibitions are an opportunity to create conversations across time, between artists whose work resonates strongly with my own creative approach’ says Jonathan Anderson, Creative Director of LOEWE. ‘Hilary Lloyd’s work is perfectly attuned to the contemporary moment and the way in which we engage with the visual world around us. It will stage a striking dialogue with Ewen Henderson’s bold materially-rich work.’

Hilary Lloyd (b. 1964, Halifax, UK) lives and works in London. For almost 30 years Lloyd has been working with film and video within sculptural installations. The idiosyncratic way in which her films are shot — making use of repetitive movements, jump cuts and sweeps — which often verge on the abstract, conjure both her own restless gaze and the experience of increasing speed that characterizes the way in which we consume images today. In recent years the technological apparatus foregrounded as part of her installations, block monitors and screens, have been accompanied by scatter-like installations incorporating curtains, frames and other set-like objects, that play with the idea of the space around the films being activated by the viewer. These installations reveal her interests in architecture, fashion, textiles and digital space.

For the exhibition, Lloyd will transform LOEWE’s Miami store through interventions of colour and textiles. Monitors will be presented throughout the space, on which she will present a new series of films shot in and around her studio in the Thamesmead area of London where her studio is located.

In and amongst Lloyd’s installation will be several large-scale ceramic sculptures by Ewen Henderson (1934 – 2000) – one of Britain’s most esteemed artists working with clay. Henderson studied under Hans Coper and Lucie Rie at the Camberwell School of Art in 1968 and was part of an illustrious generation of potters alongside Gordon Baldwin, Gillian Lowndes and Ian Godfrey, who explored a new sculptural language for ceramics. While often working with vessel forms and frequently creating vases and tea bowls, Henderson’s commitment to hand-building allowed him to freely manipulate the clay, often pushing his forms towards complete abstraction. Inspired by the material nature of clay itself, Henderson was interested in exploring ideas of the elemental and geological; his use of roughly-textured surfaces and layered colour often resembles the stratified nature of rock or earth. His totemic works which will be presented as part of the exhibition also evidence his interest in neolithic and ancient art, embracing the timeless quality of clay as one of the fundamental materials used by humankind.

MAGNETO’S NEW MISSION

MAGNETO UNDERTAKES A NEW MISSION IN HICKMAN AND OLIVER’S GIANT-SIZE X-MEN

The artist-focused X-Men series continues in March with a tale about the master of magnetism!

When Giant-Size X-Men hits stands next year, X-Men fans will get to see Jonathan Hickman’s bold vision for mutantkind unfold in epic adventures told by the industry’s most acclaimed artists. These large-scale but standalone stories will be specifically designed to highlight the artist’s talents, and each issue will focus on a specific character. This March, Hickman will team up with legendary artist Ben Oliver to turn the spotlight on the master of magnetism, Magneto!

Created by Stan Lee himself, Magneto’s been a fixture in the X-Men mythos since the very beginning. Although he debuted in 1963’s X-MEN #1 as the X-Men’s premiere super villain, he eventually became one of their fiercest members. Under Chris Claremont’s pen, Magneto was equipped with a tragic backstory, shedding light on his motivations and developing him into one of the most complex characters in the Marvel Universe. An unrelenting champion for mutantkind, Magneto once again finds himself leading a mutant nation, but this time, he has all of mutantkind including the X-Men standing at his side. Determined to make this new dream of Krakoa prosper, Magneto must now make dealings with his former sworn enemy— humanity!

Ben Oliver, known for his seminal work on ULTIMATE X-MEN, is the perfect artist to capture the emotion behind Magneto’s new role as mutant ambassador. “It’s been many years since I last worked on an X-Men related project, and I couldn’t be happier than to be working with Jonathan,” Oliver said. “I’ve long been a fan of Jonathan’s work, and Magneto as a character, so to collaborate on this project is fantastic.”

GIANT-SIZE X-MEN: MAGNETO will be the second of five essential one-shots with the first, GIANT-SIZE X-MEN: JEAN GREY AND EMMA FROST debuting in February. Uniting Jonathan Hickman with the best artists in the industry, these stories are destined to be instant classics that fans won’t want to miss! Stay tuned for upcoming announcements about more GIANT-SIZE X-MEN issues coming your way next year and which of your favorite artists will be showcased next!

Zachary Balber: Tamim

Miami Revs Up for Art Basel!

Nov. 20th through March of 2020

The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, in South Beach, at 301 Washington Avenue.

Zachary Balber uses portrait photography to uncover the camouflaged identity of some of Judaism’s most unconventional Jews, in his series Tamim.

The photographer, a rising star in Miami’s art scene who is fast gaining national acclaim, is Jewish himself and connected strongly with the men he photographed. Through this series, he re-connected with his own heritage.

This is the first time these photographs have been exhibited in full color, some are new and have never been shown.

Some of the monumental images were printed as large as possible, to show the subjects at two or three times their human scale.

Since many of these men have serious tattoos, this creates the effect of transforming a portrait into a landscape experience for the viewer ‒ the markings across their flesh forge an explicit landscape.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST ZACHARY BALBER:

Zachary Balber was born in Pittsburgh in 1983 and moved to Miami at the age of thirteen, where he received his first camera. Years later, while attending New World School of the Arts, he was hired to assist the fashion photographer Bruce Webber, assisting Webber in his campaigns for Abercrombie and Fitch, Vera Wang, and Vanity Fair Magazine.

He attended New World School of the Arts, graduating Summa Cum Laude, majoring in creative photography. His work has been exhibited at: Art Basel, The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art; The American Jewish University (LA); The Frost Art Museum FIU; MOCA NOMI; FAU Museum OCCA; (CIFO) Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation; Locust Projects; Spinello Gallery; Fredric Snitzer Gallery; The Armory; Art Hong Kong; Primary Projects, and Center for Fine Art Photography (CO); Hinge Gallery (Chicago); among many others. www.gingerphotoinc.com.

LEILA JEFFREYS

LEILA JEFFREYS

HIGH SOCIETY

Opens Friday November 15, 6-8pm

30 Orchard Street, New York, NY, 10002
Exhibition November 13 2019 – January 19, 2020

Artist Q&A and Documentary Screening: Saturday November 16, 4 for 4:30pm at Olsen Gruin

Olsen Gruin is pleased to present High Society, an exhibition of new works by Australian photographic artist, Leila Jeffreys. Her second solo exhibition since 2017, High Society will be on view at Olsen Gruin from November 13, 2019 until January 19, 2020.

Revisiting the world of the Budgerigar – the subject of her first solo exhibition some nine years ago – Leila Jeffreys’ High Society includes her signature large format portraits and sees her exploring new territory. Working with over 300 budgerigars in a studio High Society reveals a beautiful society of birds through still photography and three panel video art.

Acclaimed for her empathetic artistic vision and intuitive approach, Leila Jeffreys has again captured a vivid sense of personality in her feathered subjects. Each work forges an emotional and sympathetic bond with the audience as Leila Jeffreys establishes parallels between the ‘flock’ and our human concept of ‘community’; a commentary on our need to preserve wildlife societies and their homes.

“There exists a symbolic relationship between birds and trees,” says Leila Jeffreys. “Their survival depends on each other. We depend on them. High Society serves as a visual reminder to leave wild places for these other societies to enjoy, as well as our own.”

Leila Jeffreys (b. 1972) was born in Papua New Guinea and raised in Perth, Australia. Thanks to her adventurous parents she spent much of her childhood travelling and grew up surrounded by wildlife and forest both in Australia and abroad. This sparked her interest in the natural world. Jeffreys works with conservationists, ornithologists and bird sanctuaries to separate her charismatic subjects from their natural surroundings and photograph them with a high degree of technical skill. She is an exhibiting artist with gallery representation in Sydney, London and New York. Her work has also been featured in the iconic Bergdorf Goodman department store windows in New York City. Her book Birdland was launched at Australia’s National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. A documentary titled Bird Nerd: the Art of Leila Jeffreys will debut on the film festival circuit mid-2019 ahead of its television premiere on the ABC later this year. The film is written and directed by Walkley Award winner Poppy Stockell and was commissioned by ABC Arts.

SELENA GOMEZ FIRST NO. 1

Selena Gomez’s first single, “Lose You To Love Me,” from her highly anticipated third solo album, marks a historic moment for the singer as she lands her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Gomez co-wrote the song with Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter and Mattias Larsson with additional production from FINNEAS. “Lose You To Love Me,” available via Interscope Records, immediately dominated and shot to No.1 at Global Spotify, Apple Music and US iTunes.  In the US the song, with 38.8 million streams this week, has over 58.5 million cumulative streams. The accompanying music video shot by the acclaimed Sophie Muller has nearly 110 million views on YouTube.  Watch the video shot entirely on the new iPhone 11 Pro HERE

On the heels of “Lose You To Love Me,” Gomez surprised fans 24 hours later with the release of a brand-new song, “Look At Her Now,” which debuts today at No. 27 on the chart.  Upon release, Selena said it was a “special gift to all of her fans” and thanked them for “pushing her to be her best.”  Gomez co-wrote the song with Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter as well as Ian Kirkpatrick.  Watch the Sophie Muller directed video also shot entirely on the new iPhone 11 Pro HERE.

“Lose You To Love Me” is Gomez’s 28th song on the Billboard Hot 100 with 14 of the songs going Top 20.   Gomez has had a total of seven Top 10 Hits on the Hot 100 and previously reached No.5 with “Same Old Love” and “Good For You.”   Selena’s “Bad Liar” was named No. 1 on Billboard’s “100 Best Songs of 2017.”

Later this month, Selena will return to the stage at the “American Music Awards.”  This will mark her first live televised performance in two years.  The “2019 American Music Awards” will broadcast live on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at 8:00 p.m. EST on ABC.

Earlier this year, Gomez was featured on “I Can’t Get Enough” with Benny Blanco, J Balvin and Tainy. In 2018, she collaborated with DJ Snake, Ozuna and Cardi B on the global hit “Taki Taki,” which became one of the fastest videos to reach over 100 million views. Her previous seventeen singles including “It Ain’t Me” with Kygo, “Bad Liar,” “Fetish,” “Wolves” x  Marshmello and “Back to You” all have been certified by the RIAA.  As a solo artist Gomez has accumulated over 20 billion global streams.

Gomez most recently executive produced the critically acclaimed Netflix docu-series “Living Undocumented” which created much buzz and discussion regarding the polarizing issue of undocumented people living in the United States.  Earlier this year, she starred in Jim Jarmusch’s film THE DEAD DON’T DIE opposite Bill Murray and Adam Driver, which premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.
