U2’s 20th Anniversary

To mark the 20th anniversary of U2’s critically-acclaimed eight-time Grammy-winning album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, Interscope Records today announce the release of a shadow album titled How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb, which includes new, unreleased songs discovered in the archive of the original album recording sessions. Set for a standalone release on November 29, the first songs to be made available from How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb are ‘Country Mile’ and ‘Picture Of You (X + W)’, listen here. Watch lyric videos here.

To further celebrate the anniversary of this seminal album, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb has now been remastered for the first time, a process which saw the band go back to the vault to revisit those early ‘00s recording sessions, a period of intense creativity for U2 in the studio, as well as a time of deep personal and artistic reflection following the passing of Bono’s father Bob in 2001. This special 20th anniversary edition – out November 22 – will include the bonus track ‘Fast Cars’. See below for a complete list of formats. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (Re-Assemble Edition) – featuring both How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb + How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb – will be available as a dual digital availableNovember 22.

The Edge said of How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb – “The sessions for ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’ were such a creative period for the band, we were exploring so many song ideas in the studio. We were inspired to revisit our early music influences, and it was a time of deep personal introspection for Bono who was attempting to process – dismantle – the death of his father.

For this anniversary edition I went into my personal archive to see if there were any unreleased gems and I hit the jackpot. We chose ten that really spoke to us. Although at the time we left these songs to one side, with the benefit of hindsight we recognize that our initial instincts about them being contenders for the album were right, we were onto something.

What you’re getting on this shadow album is that raw energy of discovery, the visceral impact of the music, a sonic narrative, a moment in time, the exploration and interaction of four musicians playing together in a room… this is the pure U2 drop.”

How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb is a collection of ten songs taken from the original recording sessions for ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’ – U2’s critically acclaimed, eight-time Grammy winning album – recently rediscovered in the band’s archive and now released for the first time as a standalone album. This shadow album includes new, never-before-heard or previously released songs – ‘Treason’, ‘Evidence Of Life’, ‘Country Mile’ and ‘Happiness’; plus a song called ‘Luckiest Man In The World’ – familiar to fans under its working title ‘Mercy’, an early demo of which was leaked online almost 20 years ago – which now gets its official release; as well as five newly remastered songs – ‘Picture Of You (X+W)’, ‘I Don’t Wanna See You Smile’, ‘Are We Gonna Wait Forever?’, ‘Theme From The Batman’ and ‘All Because Of You 2’ – all collected together for the first time to mark the 20th anniversary of ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’.

How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb is U2’s eleventh studio album. Released by Island Records / Interscope on November 22, it went to No. 1 in 34 countries around the world, including Ireland, the UK, and the US. Described by Bono at the time as “our first rock album”, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb was recorded at the band’s studio in Hanover Quay, Dublin and the South of France, and produced by Steve Lilywhite, with additional production from Chris Thomas, Flood, Jacknife Lee, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, Nellee Hooper and Carl Glanville. The 11 tracks included the songs ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Sometimes You Can’t Make It on Your Own’, both of which debuted at No. 1 in the UK charts, the first time a U2 album produced two charts topping singles. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb and its singles won a total of eight Grammy Awards, sweeping all of the categories in which the band were nominated, with ‘Vertigo’ alone winning three in 2005, including Best Rock Song. The band were the night’s big winners in 2006, taking home the Grammy for Album of the Year, as well as Song of the Year for ‘Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own’ and Best Rock Song for ‘City of Blinding Lights’, with Steve Lilywhite also winning Producer of the Year.

Americans for the Arts

Americans for the Arts (AFTA), the leading national advocacy organization for the arts, concludes a robust summer of successful federal advocacy, which has resulted in successfully supporting arts funding legislation, helping to defeat measures to cut federal funding for the arts while increasing federal appropriations for arts agencies, and training a dozen local arts leaders/advocates to support their states’ arts programming.

AFTA’s summer started strong in July, as the organization convened 12 national arts leaders from nine states across the nation for a highly anticipated, two-day Legislative Fly-In, the second in 2024. Hailing from Alabama, Connecticut, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin, these dedicated arts advocates united in Washington, DC, to collectively advocate for Arts Education and legislation addressing predatory ticket sales.

“This year has been such a success in so many ways for AFTA already,” said Tooshar Swain, AFTA’s Director of Public Policy. “We are particularly proud of our advocacy work, because it benefits so many artists across the country. Our Fly-Ins help dedicated representatives from local arts agencies make their cases to their federal elected officials with tangible results. On a national scale, we are deeply grateful for the funding measures that have increased arts budgets for the benefit of all Americans.”

The impressive Fly-In cohort participated in a comprehensive day of training led by Americans for the Arts and its Arts Action Fundleaders, delving deep into the pertinent topics concerning their respective states. The following day, they met with their state’s Congressional representatives in both the Senate and House to discuss and advocate for:

  • Arts Education funding through increasing yearly appropriations in Titles I, II, and IV of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the Assistance for Arts Education grant program
  • Arts Education legislation such as the Arts Education for All Act, Reimagining Inclusive Arts Education Act, and the STEAM Education Act, all endorsed by AFTA and introduced to legislation
  • The Fans First Act, legislation to address flaws in the current live event ticketing system resulting in inflated prices.
  • The Charitable Act, a bill that will reinstate the non-itemizer deduction for individual taxpayers
  • Community Arts Engagement funding through the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs for active-duty servicemen and women as well as veterans

AFTA successfully supported several budget measures proposed this summer that increased arts appropriations. As a result of AFTA’s and others’ advocacy efforts from across the nation, the Senate Appropriations Committee allocated an increase in funding for both the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in the FY’25 Interior Appropriations bill, representing a $2 million increase above current FY’24 funding levels for each agency.

Americans for the Arts also worked to soundly defeat two amendments in the U.S. House of Representatives which sought to cut the NEA and NEH funding by approximately 25 percent. The NEA amendment failed on a voice vote due to the lack of support by both parties while the NEH amendment failed by an impressive vote of 269-to-147.This demonstrates the bi-partisan nature of arts and culture, which transcends politics.Amendments in the House to deeply cut arts funding at the NEA and NEH were also defeated.

For more information, follow @Americans4Art.

Established in 1960,Americans for the Arts(AFTA) is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization advocating for the arts at the federal level in the United States. AFTA is committed to representing and serving local communities while fostering equitable access to and appreciation for all art forms.

The Last Ballad of Damrod

ROADRUNNER RECORDS RELEASES “THE LAST BALLAD OF DAMROD” FROM THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER SEASON TWO SOUNDTRACK

LISTEN HERE | WATCH HERE

Composed by Emmy® Award-Winner Bear McCreary

Featuring Vocals from Meshuggah Frontman Jens Kidman

Maintaining its position at the forefront of culture and heavy music, Roadrunner Records has unveiled “The Last Ballad of Damrod,” the first original song from the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Season Two: Amazon Original Soundtrack). Composed by Emmy® Award winner Bear McCreary, and featuring vocals from Jens Kidman, frontman of Grammy-nominated Swedish extreme-metal band Meshuggah, the song will appear in the highly anticipated second season of the Amazon Original series.

“The Last Ballad of Damrod” (feat. Jens Kidman) is available to stream and download beginning today via Roadrunner Records HERE. Watch a lyric video for the song HERE.

Says McCreary: “When I first glimpsed Damrod, the murderous troll in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season Two, I knew immediately I had to call Jens Kidman. The aggressive frontman of Meshuggah, Jens put a searing brand on ‘The Last Ballad of Damrod’ with his blistering vocal performance. I am exhilarated to team up with Roadrunner Records, home to some of my favorite bands of all time like Gojira and Slipknot, to bring our song to the world. My collaboration with Jens, alongside virtuoso drummer Gene Hoglan, on ‘The Last Ballad of Damrod,’ offers an introduction to my exploration of the darker recesses of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium and sets the stage for the rest of the sweeping score to come.”

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Season Two: Amazon Original Series Soundtrack) will be released worldwide on August 23rd, tied to the highly-anticipated return of the series later this month. Available across all music streaming services, the full episodic score for the second season of the Amazon Original series was composed by Emmy® Award-winner Bear McCreary (Da Vinci’s Demons). Following each episode, Amazon Music will release a weekly soundtrack album containing the score for that episode, only available on Amazon Music.

For the epic first season of Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, composer Bear McCreary wove a tapestry of symphonic orchestra, bombastic percussion, and folk instruments from across Europe and North Africa, combined with solo vocalists and choirs singing in the iconic languages of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books. For the gripping second season, McCreary has built atop that foundation with dynamic new themes and colors, including Bulgarian women’s choir and gadulka for Rhûn, children’s choir for the pastoral city of Eregion, Hardanger fiddle for new character Estrid, and deathly whispers for the terrifying Barrow-wights.

Season Two of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will debut on Prime Video on August 29, 2024, in more than 240 countries and territories around the world, and in multiple languages.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

The first season of The Rings of Power has been an unprecedented success, viewed by more than 100 million people worldwide, with more than 32 billion minutes streamed. The highly anticipated series attracted more than 25 million global viewers on its first day, marking the biggest premiere in the history of Prime Video, and also debuted as the No. 1 show on Nielsen’s overall streaming chart in its opening weekend. The show has driven more Prime sign-ups worldwide during its launch window than any other previous content to date. The season finale also created a global cultural moment, with multiple series-themed hashtags, including #TheRingsofPower and others, trending in 27 countries across Twitter for over 426 cumulative hours throughout the weekend.

The second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is produced by showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. They are joined by executive producers Lindsey Weber, Callum Greene, Justin Doble, Jason Cahill, and Gennifer Hutchison, along with co-executive producer and director Charlotte Brändström, producers Kate Hazell and Helen Shang, and co-producers Clare Buxton, Andrew Lee, Glenise Mullins, and Matthew Penry-Davey. Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn

Zeitz MOCAA presents The Other Side of Now, a solo exhibition of film and sculpture by Vietnamese American artist Tuấn Andrew Nguyễn which opens at the museum on Thursday, 22 August at 6 pm. A special members’ preview will take place at 5 pm ahead of the public opening. This exhibition explores the transnational entanglements created by colonisation and war. Attending to the erased voices of Vietnamese, Senegalese, and Moroccan history, it proposes a space for communal healing and remembrance.

Nguyễn’s films move along spectrums of fact and fiction, past and present, memory and forgetting. He uses the power of storytelling to create speculative visions of painful histories. He opens a doorway of empathy and healing for both the subject and viewer. In letters to a lost family member, imagined conversations between generations, or reincarnation as a means of healing from physical trauma, his work looks at hard pasts to realise healed futures. Read More
