Young Franco × Golden Vessel – Underneath

Following a near perfect run of singles under a reformed, hip hop dance sound recruiting the likes of rap mogul Denzel Curry, SonReal and rising star Jalmar, Young Franco returns to his indie roots, collaborating with close friend Golden Vessel for new single, “Underneath”. Listen HERE

Young Franco’s career highlights include Apple Advertising Campaigns, support from Zane Lowe and hosting new MTV series, “Back and Beyond” with Thandi Phoenix, “Underneath” acts as an ode to the incredible, feel good alternative sound that established his core early fanbase.

“Underneath” oozes timelessness, highlighting Young Franco’s ability to shift sounds and genres, while keeping his cornerstone value of quality dance cross over production. Across its just under 4-minute run time, Golden Vessel’s ominous vocals shimmer amidst a cocktail of production flare from Franco. A wobbly bassline combines perfectly with softly tapped piano chords, creating the underbed for a sway worthy alt-pop ballad. As the synth line takes care of the melodic elements in the track’s breakdown, a melancholic ambience is created, channeling the perfect moment for reflection in these unstable times.

On the creation of the track, Golden Vessel stated, “To me it feels like it’s about that corny moment at a music festival or a concert where you’ve spotted someone a couple of times and you lock eyes with them. Your favorite band is playing, and you feel really connected with this stranger even though you know nothing about them.”

About Young Franco

The Young Franco project is currently sitting perched above the clouds, with career highlights being ticked off with every subsequent release. Most recently he collaborated with Filipino-Canadian Director Khrysta Lloren a.k.a NOFAC3 for the music video for Come Thru (feat. SonReal & Jalmar), which premiered via Flaunt. His 2020 single, “Fallin Apart” featuring Denzel Curry and Pell took the already glowing artist to angelic levels. The single received a full addition on Triple J, as well as radio spins globally, and featured on publications such as Clash Magazine, NME, Out Now Magazine, Colors, Sniffers, Happy Mag, Acclaim, Purple Sneakers, Pilerats and more. The track also featured as the soundtrack for Apple’s Airpod ‘Jump’ campaign which has received nearly 10 million views on Youtube and was premiered during the Grammys broadcast.

12AM × Pyrex – Lights

Rising alt pop, hip hop, and R&B act 12AM drops new single “Lights” out now via Sony Music Entertainment Canada. On the track, the Canadian talent links up with Baltimore rapper, producer, and Metro Boomin affiliate Pyrex (Whippa) to deliver a slick end-of-summer jam. Following the streaming success of his latest releases like “come over” and “Ski Mask” (which landed on Spotify’s highly-acclaimed ‘tear drop’ playlist), the new heat cements the Canadian talent as a fiery newcomer to watch.

Produced by Evan Gartner and Mason Sacks, “Lights” features alluring guitar loops over hard hitting 808s and bass, both spotlighting 12AM‘s signature melodic R&B sound. The lyrics paint an glorious picture of his freshly acquired L.A. lifestyle: the extravagant bliss of hopping out of suicide doors, jacuzzi living, and women, with questions asked about the pricetag on the finer things. But it didn’t always start out this way, juxtaposed by the artist’s challenged upbringing, 12AM offers his latest verses from the top of the mountain he’s been climbing before his official arrival in 2016. With the assist on the track, Pyrex ascends alongside 12AM with his distinct hot-blooded delivery. Together, flaunting and thriving on it’s hypnotic beat, serve up a certified banger.

The new music proceeds after “come over” and “Voices” whose success resulted in early rotation on Apple Radio 1, premieres with Travis Mills and media coverage from various cultural tastemakers. In addition to mainstream radio and media coverage, praise for 12AM’s collection can be seen across social media from artists such as Travis Barker, Tyla Yaweh, and Elijah Woods.

No stranger to media coverage and acclaim from tastemakers, praise can be seen coming from industry key players such as Complex, Elevator Mag, Noisey, and Lyrical Lemonade who said, “12AM has been having a massive year without being able to tour, the Canadian [and LA-based] artist has an innate ability to craft big choruses which is why more and more artists are tapping in to use his melodic talents.”

Kodie – Children

Houston-based rapper-producer BBY Kodie released his powerful new single, “Children,” via True Panther/EQT/Motown Records. Download / stream “Children,” which is from his upcoming mixtape, HERE.

The provocative, richly cinematic official video for “Children” immerses Kodie in

vibrant, visceral tableaux that reference the Baroque historical paintings of Caravaggio, capturing moments in history like the the Last Supper, and the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. View the video, which was helmed by the trio of directors Nyles Washington, Ross Constable and Elias Morrow Weinberg, HERE.

The “Children” video follows “Korleone” which was named one of the best rap videos of 2020 by Rolling Stone, which said, “BBY Kodie seems quietly ascendant. With the attitude of someone who spent 2020 building in secret, ‘Korleone’ arrives almost fully realized. BBY Kodie has described himself as Houston’s answer to Drake and it’s increasingly clear how serious he is.”

Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana in 2000, Kodie was raised by his biological mother’s adopted sister and her husband, who moved to Houston when he was two. There, Kodie grew up with jazz and soul blaring through the house. As a teenager, he discovered rappers Future, Young Thug and Lil Yachty alongside Houston legends like Lil Flip, and channeled his influences into his first beats on Fruity Loops. By high school, he was dropping a song a day on SoundCloud. He began throwing biweekly DIY shows with HVN, growing his fanbase locally and online.

For the 20-year-old rapper-producer, putting words together is an art form based in the Texas lineage of flexing and freestyling. “When you grow up on that shit, it just gets embedded in your skin,” BBY Kodie explains. “It’s like putting the ugliest words on the most beautiful beats.”

Albums like 2018’s Kodie Kardashian and 2019’s Vogue marked gradual steps away from the innocent charm of his earlier songs towards a more polished artistic vision that coalesces on his forthcoming mixtape. Naming Kodie one of the best new artists, Pigeons & Planes said, “the budding talent operates on a high-octane field of his own, confident as hell and raring to bring the world to Houston.”

Kyle Banks – Bad Bih

Red Bull Records is thrilled to announce the latest artist to join its roster, rising R&B singer Kyle Banks. The West Coast crooner has established himself as a formidable new voice, previously collaborating with fellow LA artists such as Bino Rideaux, Cozz, and Kalan..

To commemorate his signing, Banks kicks off this new chapter with the release of his first label single, “Bad Bih.” Produced by GRAMMY Award-nominated duo Meez and LouieJi–known for their work off Dreamville’s Revenge of the Dreamers III–the single is laden with palpable charisma and slick swagger, opening with a smooth guitar riff and an infectious hook.

“Kyle Banks lives his craft and brings exceptional talent to Red Bull Records. Our A&R team continues to identify groundbreaking talent as our Vice President, Charles “CB” Burks, believed in Kyle’s work and potential,” says Senior Vice President/Head of A&R, Kenny ‘Tick’ Salcido, of the signing. “With Kyle’s incredible production team, a great voice, and skill for writing authentic lyrics, we have a recipe for a career artist.”

“‘Bad Bih’ is about coming up with that one person who experiences you going from your lowest to your highest,” says Kyle Banks about his inspiration behind the track. “It’s a ‘rags to riches’ story, and being loyal makes you a bad B.”

Banks has also released the cinematic music video for “Bad Bih,” which draws from his own experiences of being Black in America. Directed by Blu, the video switches back and forth between intimate, sun-drenched scenes of Kyle and his love interest, juxtaposed in stark contrast against video and camera footage of Kyle as he’s pulled over by a police officer and subjected to harassment and racial profiling.

About Kyle Banks

Rather than traffic in a pre-existing lane, Kyle Banks paves a path of his own, twisting up R&B with laidback West Coast bounce, unapologetic ambition, and show-stopping vocals. The Los Angeles native cinematically spins true underdog stories with no shortage of detail, allowing you to pull up alongside him. His independent debut single “Time Go” gained traction, and he opened for Phora’s Love Is Hell tour. In 2020, he lit up the game with his EP Green Light, and critical acclaim followed with RESPECT. Magazine dubbing him a “rising R&B star.” After independently amassing hundreds of thousands of streams and views, Banks signed to Red Bull Records in the wake of his success and is set to showcase his inimitable and irresistibly captivating style on a series of singles and a project debut later this year.

Common × Seun Kuti × Black Thought – When We Move

Seun Kuti, son of Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and an Afrobeat legend in his own right, accompanied superstar American rappers Common and Black Thought on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on August 19th.

The trio debuted “When We Move,” the first single from Common’s upcoming album A Beautiful Revolution (Pt. 2), available September 10th. The track features Seun as a vocalist and saxophonist alongside Black Thought, cofounder and MC of The Tonight Show house band The Roots. A sequel to the 2020 release of A Beautiful Revolution (Pt. 1), Pt. 2 highlights talents such as multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Brittany Howard, singer PJ, guitarist and singer Marcus King, guitarist Isaiah Sharkey, and poet Morgan Parker.

Seun joined the studio performance at Rockefeller Plaza virtually from the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, Nigeria, where he played live. Founded by Fela, the original Afrika Shrine was a club that served as a cultural gathering spot from its 1972 opening until his death in 1997. The Kuti family built the New Afrika Shrine in 2000, creating a newer and larger community hub in the same ethos as the Shrine.

Led by Fela’s daughter Yeni, The New Shrine features weekly performances from his son Femi and monthly performances from Seun alongside Egypt 80, his father’s former band that he now leads. It is also the host of Felabration, a weeklong music festival created in memory of Fela and held during his birthday annually. The 24/7 venue is a massive draw for visiting musicians, including Bootsy Collins, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Skepta, and Bono.

Merging the history of African jazz, soul, and funk music with the contemporary hip hop and rap scene, Seun and Common celebrate the longstanding influence of Black culture. While Pt. 1 was intended to “channel all of our pain and outrage into something productive, inspirational, and good,” said Common to Rolling Stone. “Pt. 2 was created with hope and inspiration in mind,” said his recent statement. “The spirit of the album was meant to emulate what a greater day would sound and feel like.”

Rich Gang – Blue Emerald

Rich Gang is back! Cash Money Records co-founder and GRAMMY® Award-nominated rap icon Bryan “Baby” Williams a.k.a. Birdman has joined forces with GRAMMY® Award-winning multi-platinum superstar Young Thug on a new single entitled Blue Emerald. Get it HERE.

The track fuses otherworldly production with a UFO-style buzz as Young Thug slithers through the beat with eerie melodies. It all builds toward a massive and magnetic chant meant to blast off into the fall.

“This is what y’all have been waiting for,” Birdman says.  “Me and Thugger are back together, and ‘Blue Emerald’ is just the beginning. This is the next era of Rich Gang. It starts now.”

This notably marks the return of Rich Gang—the ever-evolving hip-hop brand and collective founded by Birdman. 2013’s compilation album, Rich Gang, crashed the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200 and yielded the gold-selling Hot 100 hit “Tap Out,” featuring Lil Wayne, Birdman, Mack Maine, Nicki Minaj, and Future. Riding this momentum, Rich Gang delivered the multi-platinum smash “Lifestyle” [feat. Young Thug, Rich Homie Quan, & Birdman] and the historic mixtape, Rich Gang: Tha Tour Part 1. The latter project claimed spots on numerous best of the decade lists, including ones by Noisey, Stereogum, and Rolling Stone. Stereogum hailed it as “a classic of 2010s rap music.”

The music video premiered on BET Jams, BET Hip Hop, Vevo and YouTube with Music Choice and Revolt on August 27th at Midnight (12:00 am ET / 9:00 pm PT). Watch it HERE.

Becky Hill – Only Honest on the Weekend Review

By: Skyler Johnson

Reality TV in America has provided us with many of the musicians, performers, and influencers flooding our Twitter feeds, from Jennifer Hudson to Trixie Mattel. The UK has its own reality TV shows, hence celebrities that have taken their television fame and become successful. A great example is Becky Hill, who was a semi-finalist on The Voice UK and became one of its most successful alumni, being the first and only artist to reach number one on the UK Singles Chart for a song she was featured in by Oliver Heldens, “Gecko”. She just released her debut album, Only Honest on the Weekend, which I had the privilege of listening to.

This record is dance pop, utilizing the retro ‘80s sound that has become popular within the past few years. This is music to hear at the club, at least for the most part, though there are a few exceptions, including “Perfect People” and “Distance,” which both offer refreshing, emotional ballads. The album has fifteen tracks, four of which have been already released: “Better off Without You,” “Heaven on My Mind,” “Last Time” and “Remember.” The latter two were collaborations with DJ David Guetta. She enlisted the help of producers such as Lostboy, Billen Ted and 220 Kid. Lostboy has worked with artists such as Anne-Marie, Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha and Zedd while Billen Ted and 220 Kid are most known for their remix of a sea shanty turned viral TikTok song, “Wellerman.” It’s clear Hill shares production teams with Dua Lipa and Anne-Marie, and at times it’s hard to tell Hill apart from Dua Lipa as they have similar vocal ranges, though Hill’s range is arguably better.

The album starts off with five average tracks: “I Got You,” “Last Time,” “Make it Hard to Love,” “Better to Love” and “Remember.” They aren’t necessarily boring or skippable, but they aren’t the catchiest. “Perfect People” shows off Hill’s decent vocal range pretty well.

The next tracks, “My Heart Goes (LaDiDa),” “Could Be My Somebody” and “Business” are the best of the record. They’re the first to instantly catch the listener’s attention from the opening verse. “My Heart Goes (LaDiDa)” is particularly excellent because it’s able to utilize gibberish (LaDiDa) in a way that works perfectly with the song, in a way that very few other artists can.

The last six tracks aren’t able to live up to the high standards of 7-9 but are still solid headbangers nonetheless. “Heaven on My Mind” stands above the rest for it’s chorus and “Through the Night” provides a great end to the album.

Overall, Only Honest on the Weekend is very tight with no song being unlistenable. While some may not be satisfactory, none are inadequate for the dance pop music listener. And if nothing else, check out tracks 7-9. A-.
