Interview with Casey McQuillen

By: Skyler Johnson

Since American Idol’s first inception in 2002, no one could have guessed how popular the show would be and how many new musicians would gain popularity through the years, including Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert, and Jennifer Hudson. Casey McQuillen performed on the show in season 13 and became a top 48 musician. Since then she’s done an anti-bullying concert series, and was interviewed by Kelly Clarkson, as well as released a lot of great music. I had the pleasure of interviewing McQuillen on her life and career up to this point.

  1. How did you first get into music?

I started writing music from a really young age!  It was when I learned to play some guitar around the age of 12, though, that I started performing and posting my music on the internet.  Since then, I’ve been lucky to have an amazing relationship with my audience, and many of my fans have been following my music for close to 15 years.

2. What, do you feel, is your biggest success as a singer/songwriter?

As a singer/songwriter, I think my biggest success has been writing about really difficult topics and conveying them on stage in a way that makes audiences feel connected and understood.  I wrote my song “Beautiful” at 17 about the pressures of conforming to beauty standards, and the response I’ve received from audiences all across the country inspired me to continue to be painfully honest in my writing.  The title track on my upcoming album “Can A Heart Go Bad?” addresses very personal and painful mental health issues, and though I’m a bit scared to share it the world, I’m confident my vulnerability will allow for a deeper connection with the listening audience.

3. Who are your biggest influences and why?

I would say Taylor Swift is my biggest songwriting influence because I’ve been listening to her music at every step of my career.  Other artists I feel very inspired by include Colbie Caillat, Kate Voegele (whom I had the honor of opening for), and Adele. All of these women write beautiful, complex stories into their songs, and I try to emulate that.

4. How important was it for you to campaign for anti-bullying?

I was picked on a ‘normal’ amount as a kid, but it was through self-reflection in songwriting years later that I realized how deeply I’d internalized a lot of the insecurities I’d developed in middle & high school, and how long those issues had continue to stick around in the back of my psyche.  Somewhere in my heart, I assumed the kids saying and doing mean things to me must be right, or why else would they treat me so badly?  In my anti-bullying concert series, I tell my story and sing the songs I wrote about growing up in that environment.  With perspective, we’re able to discuss that bullies bully because they’re insecure, not because there’s anything wrong with you.  And through these examples, I hope to help curb the cycle of internalized insecurity for the next generation.

5. What made you want to campaign for anti-bullying?

It would have meant a lot to me as a young student to have a role model at school. I think I would have felt a lot less alone knowing that someone I looked up to had had similar experiences to me and made it out on the other side.  I want to be that person for these kids.

6. How was your experience performing on American Idol?

American Idol was great practice in performing under pressure.  I’ve found that my career cycles in these long preparation periods with my team, all culminating in big, high-pressure performances or interviews.  Being exposed to such high-stakes performances at such a young age on American Idol gave me a lot of confidence in my ability to be myself and have fun during those moments.

7. Was it odd seeing yourself on camera?

I’ve been on camera most of my life, so I’m pretty used to it.  I started posting on YouTube and developing a following at a pretty young age, so it wasn’t that odd.  However, Idol was definitely the first time I’d ever been exposed to stage lighting and cameras, which are so bright and intimidating.  Before my Idol audition, they had me wait in this little box with a red light, and when it turned green, I opened the door and walked out onto the audition stage.  So, I truly hadn’t seen the lights until the moment the cameras were on me.  It definitely threw me for a loop!

8. How was being on The Kelly Clarkson Show, what was that experience like?

Honestly, it was one of the most surreal moments of my life.  It was very nerve-wracking, but Kelly Clarkson is the sweetest person and had even left me a hand written note in my dressing room welcoming me to the show and thanking me for my work in the community.  Small details like that really helped me feel at ease before the show, and she’s so friendly and funny that I felt like the interview was a breeze.  It was probably my favorite experience so far in my career.

9. Are you excited to go on tour?

I am PUMPED!  I was having so much fun touring with artists like Eric Hutchinson and Tyler Hilton before the pandemic, and it was so disappointing to have to cancel so many shows and stay off stage for so long.  But we are BACK baby, and I feel so honored to be hitting the road with the talented Clark Beckham this fall.  Come see us!

10. Are there any upcoming projects you’re allowed to tell us about?

My album “Can a Heart Go Bad?” will be coming out soon, so make sure to follow me on Apple Music and Spotify to stay up to date with all my releases.  I’m really proud of the album and I hope everyone will have a chance to hear it!

LHCA Signs MOU with WWF

The Leather & Hide Council of America (L&HCA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with World Wildlife Fund (WWF), joining forces to collaborate on a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices in the U.S. leather industry. The ambitious agreement will position the U.S. industry as a global leader in sustainable leather production.

“This is a historic moment for the leather industry,” said Stephen Sothmann, President of L&HCA. “By partnering with WWF and embracing ESG practices as a central tenet of its business culture, the U.S. leather industry is poised to take the lead in addressing the most critical challenges we face today and in the future.”

With support and guidance from WWF, L&HCA will be a conduit for projects promoting solutions to help U.S. companies adopt robust systems and processes to construct, implement, and demonstrate progress on science-based, data-driven ESG commitments.

“Due to their privileged position in the global marketplace, WWF believes that the U.S. leather sector is well positioned to significantly advance the decoupling of deforestation from global leather value chains,” said Mauricio Bauer, Senior Director, Beef & Leather Supply Chains, WWF-US. “This partnership with L&HCA is an important step forward. By constructing a robust body of work aimed at addressing these issues in an open, science-based, data-driven manner, US leather companies will be making a substantial contribution to the sustainability of the leather sector as a whole.”

Among the issues to be addressed via the partnership between the two organizations include deforestation, water stewardship, human and labor rights, and zero net greenhouse gas emissions. The partnership also intends to promote an open dialogue with a multitude of stakeholders, from academia and NGOs to the public sector and financial institutions.

The MOU builds on previous collaboration efforts between the two organizations, as well as the National Wildlife Federation (NWF).

Tay Money – The Assignment

Tay Money flexes on a fiery new track entitled “The Assignment”. Fueled by a skittering bounce, Tay eases into her confident and charismatic bars with an announcement, “I understood the assignment”. Ahead of its release, the track has already made its rounds on TikTok with over 280K videos and climbing.

“The Assignment” is available now at all digital retailers. Listen HERE.

Tay Money upholds her red-hot streak this summer. In July, she made her U.S. major festival debut with a standout set at Rolling Loud Miami, bringing the crowd to its feet. “The Assignment” arrives on the heels of a string of summer anthems including tracks “Shake” and “Asthma Pump” which both feature the unfiltered lyrics and attitude that have made the Dallas artist one to watch. Having been featured on the digital cover of ELEVATOR, and hailed by FLAUNT as “one of the hardest female rappers of our generation,” Tay’s in the midst of a hot streak that stretches back to the release of Blockedt. She made that EP with heavyweights like Derrick Milano (a co-writer on Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hot Girl Summer”) and Bankroll Got It (producers of hits like “DO DAT” by Stunna 4 Vegas featuring DaBaby & Lil Baby)—collaborations that fed into the boundary-pushing energy of her tracks since. “Shake” showcases an exciting new side of Tay’s style, highlighting her ability to craft emotionally stirring songs while still sticking to her favorite topic―flaunting her assets.

About Tay Money

In just over two years, Tay Money, the Athens-born, Dallas-based rapper has racked up millions of views and streams thanks to her witty punchlines and unique musical approach. Her debut song, “Na Na” marked the beginning of her career as an artist and set the tone for the originality that she would bring to the rest of her records to come. Within months of her first release, she was selling out shows in Dallas and had gained a cult-like following among her listeners (now dubbed Tay Army).

With her bouncy trap beats, unmistakable Texas twang, and unapologetically catchy rhymes, Tay began to reach commercial success with her breakout song “Trapper’s Delight” in 2018. With what was originally a risky move to expand her music outside the limits of her hometown of Dallas, the video for “Trapper’s Delight” amassed over 1.1 million views in under two months. Since then, she’s continued to release many more viral hits including “Bussin” (11 million YouTube views), “Bussin 2.0” with Saweetie (7 million YouTube views), and “Brat” featuring Mulatto, two of which are on her recently released EP, Blockedt. The widely acclaimed project led to many defining moments for Tay, landing spots on coveted playlists including Spotify’s New Music Friday, Feelin Myself, and Release Radar as well as Apple Music’s The Plug and New In Hip Hop. The project also received praise from FLAUNT who hailed her as “one of the biggest women rappers in Texas”, SPIN who noted that she was “one of the biggest women rappers in Texas”, and ELEVATOR who named her their February cover star. Now, with the cosigns of some of the biggest up-and-coming female rappers, and having surpassed the milestone of over 100 million U.S. streams, Tay plans to build on her momentum with her forthcoming EP.

Sloppy Jane – Party Anthem

Haley Dahl, who records as Sloppy Jane, has released her new single, “Party Anthem”, marking the lauded musician’s first release as the newest signing to Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records. Dahl has also revealed details for her forthcoming new album, Madison, set for release on November 5th. “Party Anthem” is a soaring orchestral ballad that comes on like Kate Bush leading Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band or Laura Nyro fronting Olivia Tremor Control. It’s accompanied by a captivating video shot in 16 mm and filmed inside the Lost World Caverns in West Virginia, the place where Dahl recorded all of Madison, bringing in 21 bandmates from all around the country to make an impressive and ambitious orchestral album recorded deep inside the caves. It’s the first time someone has ever recorded an entire album in a cave, and the results are sonically stunning; Madison is an astounding, glorious record of highest order melodrama.

Sloppy Jane will celebrate the album release with a headline show in New York City at Baby’s Alright on November 7th. She will also be opening for Iceage in February. All dates below.

On signing to Saddest Factory Records and crafting her latest album, Dahl shared, “Phoebe and I made friends in high school when I was goth and didn’t bathe and she wore dresses with little bicycles on them – we mistook each other for cool then, and it lasted. Phoebe is one of my closest friends, and is also someone who has always seen that the things that make my work different are what make it valuable. She played bass in Sloppy Jane. When I was moving to New York I talked about how I wanted to make the band bigger and incorporate chamber instruments, and a lot of people didn’t get what I meant, but Phoebe said, ‘Go get your orchestra.’

When I started talking about recording in caves, she was one of the few people to really get it immediately and thought it was the coolest thing. To work with someone who has so much personal context and enthusiasm was kind of a no-brainer. The label name “Saddest Factory Records” came from a joke I made on twitter, and I kind of think that’s representative of what my ideal professional trajectory looks like- me and my same friends who understand each other making the same jokes over and over again while our platforms expand.”

Phoebe Bridgers will join Dahl for an IG Live chat on Friday, September 10th at 3:30pm ET/ 12:30pm PT.

Click HERE to watch the video for “Party Anthem.” Click HERE to buy/stream “Party Anthem.”

For Madison, Dahl spent three years exploring caves that could capture her vision for the album. Her search took her across the USA, obsessing over the different acoustics of each option,  before landing on Lost World Caverns. The result is a beautiful, personal labor of love; a sweeping grand gesture, a powerful statement about obsessive love, and about growing into yourself in the aftermath of a life-changing relationship.

Dahl and her 21 bandmates recorded all of Madison from inside the caves from 3pm to 8:30 am each day over the course of two weeks. To access the space, they’d enter through the back of a gift shop, down a long tunnel where they’d walk down 200 feet of stairs to reach the entrance. Dahl and her bandmates did this steep walk with a piano. The ceiling of Lost World Caverns is massively high and is a perfect dome. The inside was also 98 percent humidity, leading to both stellar sound and also problems with tuning and gear. Engineer Ryan Howe sat in his parents Subaru above the cave with his mixing board and computer, and threaded cables down 90 feet through a hole in the ground to the ceiling of the cave.

This album, so fully realized and diligently executed, is a long time coming for Dahl, who has been performing as Sloppy Jane since she was a teenager. In those days, Sloppy Jane was a three-piece punk band. Its earliest members were Phoebe Bridgers on bass, Sarah Cath on guitar, and Imogen Teasley-Vlautin on drums. Now the band has over a dozen members, and has transformed into a chamber pop project. Dahl also learned so much as a musician: on Madison, she learned how to write for chamber instruments and taught herself the piano. The record is difficult to categorize. It’s David Bowie but also when the song “Crying,” by Roy Orbison plays at the end of Harmony Korine’s Gummo. It’s My Chemical Romance meets Sgt. Pepper. Courtney Love and Queen. It’s a huge, flowery, velvety thing full of toy horses and stalagmites. It follows one major throughline: a grand gesture so large that it moves the whole Earth.

About 98 Degrees

One of the best-selling boy bands of the ‘90s, the group features Jeff Timmons, brothers Nick and Drew Lachey, and Justin Jeffre. Inspired to get back together during the pandemic, the band is scheduled to make their return to the stage in August as they begin their “98 Days of Summer” campaign. In anticipation of their return, the guys recently released their new single and video “Where Do You Wanna Go.” The vibrant, catchy pop song/video, is the group’s first in eight years, and was produced and co-written by DJ LUX and released under 98 INC/Johnny Wright Entertainment.

The 98 Days of Summer campaign, which launched in June, features 98 days of throwback photos, video clips, and unreleased music on the group’s social media channels, culminating in the release of their remix EP on August 20th.

Starting with its 1997 self-titled debut album 98 Degrees, the band rose to fame during the boy-band-crazed era of the late ‘90s. Their platinum debut featured the Top 10 hit single “Invisible Man.” In 1998, their second release “98 Degrees and Rising” went 5x platinum and featured the classic chart-topping Top 10 singles “Because of You” and “The Hardest Thing” and the classic wedding favorite “I Do (Cherish You).” Their third album “This Christmas,” released in 1998, went 5x platinum and spawned the Top 40 hit single “This Gift.” This was followed by “Revelation” in 2000 which went 2x platinum. It featured the hit single “Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche),” which became the most added Top 40 single in history, allowing the song to debut strongly at No. 2 in the Billboard 100 charts–becoming the highest-charting single in its debut week by a boy band during that time. 98 Degrees was also featured on Mariah Carey’s chart-topper “Thank God I Found You” that same year. The group released a greatest hits album in 2002. “Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)” became the most added Top 40 single in history with 170 adds on radio in its initial week, allowing the song to debut strongly at No. 2 in the Billboard 100 charts, becoming the highest-charting single in its debut week by a boy band during that time. The American/R&B Vocal group has sold more than 15 million records worldwide and achieved eight Top 40 singles in the U.S.

Twenty One Pilots × Roblox

Roblox and Warner Music Group announced the Twenty One Pilots Concert Experience, a pioneering interactive virtual concert powered by the latest Roblox technology. The fully immersive performance begins inside Roblox on Friday, September 17th at 4 p.m. PDT, kicking off the Grammy Award-winning Fueled By Ramen/Elektra artist’s sold out Takeover Tour.

The high-fidelity experience will feature the first-ever dynamic setlist dictated by fans in real-time; metaverse-spanning pre-concert quests involving some of Roblox’s most popular experiences that also feature custom portals that will transport users into the pre-concert venue; exclusive custom designed virtual merchandise, and much more. Fans can access the experience and join the pre-show festivities beginning today by visiting the Twenty One Pilots event page. New Roblox users will need to create an account to enter the concert venue.

Twenty One Pilots is a band that has spent their entire career figuring out how to reach the most people possible,” said the band’s longtime Creative Director Mark Eshleman. “From selling out the small room and moving to the big venue next door, to now launching a virtual experience with Roblox for millions of users, the goal has always been the same. The Roblox team has made an effort every step of the way to honor the band’s fans, its lore, and history to make sure this experience aligns with what people can expect from a show.

Designed in close collaboration with the band and Eshleman, the Roblox event aligns with Twenty One Pilots’ fan-first philosophy, bringing this experience to fans worldwide. The five-song set will feature a combination of hit songs as well as new material from their 2021 album, Scaled and Icy.

Mike Easterlin, Co-President, Elektra Music Group, said: “Tyler and Josh are two of the most unapologetically bold, forward-thinking artists I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Their commitment to connecting with their fans in new and creative ways is unparalleled, and I’m always amazed at how Mark continually finds ways to execute their imaginative vision. Roblox is a perfect partner in delivering another unique and exciting new way for fans to experience the world of Twenty One Pilots.

Jon Vlassopulos, Global Head of Music, Roblox, said: “We are taking virtual concerts to the next level with our Twenty One Pilots virtual concert experience. Fans will be able to decide the order of the songs that they hear by choosing with their friends. They will be able to interact with the environment in creative ways becoming part of the show, and Tyler and Josh will participate in a live chat with fans after the virtual concert. This is what Roblox is built for, bringing people together to interact in new and exciting ways and we are just scratching the surface of what’s possible.”

Oana Ruxandra, Chief Digital Officer & Executive Vice President, Business Development, Warner Music Group, said: “The Twenty One Pilots Concert Experience is a completely new format of interactive music experiences on Roblox. It is non-linear, it is choose-your-own-path, and it is the very reason why we have such a close partnership with Roblox. Our goal is to continue to build ever-evolving ways for our artists and fans to meet, connect and create something authentic together.”

The first-of-its-kind experience will include:

  • A dynamic setlist that gives users in each concert the ability to control the order of songs performed through instantaneous voting once the concert begins. About Twenty One Pilots

GRAMMY Award-winning Twenty One Pilots quietly emerged as one of the most successful bands of the 21st century and redefined the sound of a generation. After billions of streams and dozens of multi-Platinum certifications around the world, the history-making Columbus, OH duoTyler Joseph and Josh Dun ascended to a creative and critical high watermark on their new full-length album, Scaled And Icy. The album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top “Rock Albums” and “Alternative Albums” charts, while landing at No. 3 on the “Billboard 200,” marking the biggest opening week for a rock album in 2021. Among a collection of anthems, Scaled And Icy spawned “Shy Away,” which spent eight consecutive weeks at #1 at Alternative Radio, and “Saturday” which just climbed to #1 at Alternative Radio marking the band’s 9th #1 single in the format. Scaled And Icy follows Twenty One Pilots’ 2018 Platinum certified album TRENCH, which features the platinum singles: “Chlorine,” “My Blood,” and the GRAMMY  Award-nominated “Jumpsuit.” The album graced spots on “Best of” year-end lists by Billboard, KERRANG!, Alternative Press, and Rock Sound who placed it at #1. Formed in 2009, the guys grinded towards this moment following the mainstream breakout of 2015’s BLURRYFACE. Certified quadruple-platinum in the U.S., it was declared the first album ever to have every one of its songs certified Gold or Platinum by the RIAA, and garnered a GRAMMY  Award for the Diamond certified “Stressed Out.” In 2019 Twenty One Pilots announced that their 2013 LP Vessel achieved the same Gold & Platinum milestone with every individual track from the album receiving Gold, Platinum or Multi-Platinum certification from the RIAA, making the duo the first artist/group with two albums to reach this landmark achievement.

Will Claye – Wee Hours Music Video

Fresh off participating in this year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, hip-hop artist and Olympic medalist Will Claye releases the stunning visual for his single, “Wee Hours,” out now via Red Bull Records. Written by Claye, “Wee Hours” was produced by Grammy-winning songwriter and producer DJ Khalil, best known for his work with Jay-Z, Kanye West, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and more.

The strength of “Wee Hours” lies in Claye‘s introspective and poignant lyrics, which he delivers with a West Coast-influenced flair. The cinematic music video companion echoes this, drawing inspiration from his own experiences. “I wanted to speak for people whose voices have been suppressed,” says Claye. “I want to inspire my people and show them that even through all the horrific things we have gone through as a people, we can make it through and rise above it all.”

Adorned in his Olympic medals amidst a field of sunflowers, the visual cuts back and forth between Claye and a younger version of himself. Set in the orange-hued glow of his family’s home, the video shows young Will as he goes through the motions of his day. The video soon takes a darker tone, as Will steps outside and witnesses a police officer chase a Black man onto his yard. As the officer moves to pull out his gun, the man is saved by three guardian angels driving by, as the video closes with the powerful message of “our angels are always watching over us.”

The release of “Wee Hours” follows the debut of Elevate, the documentary from Red Bull. The short film follows Claye as he trains for the Olympics and records new music, working to make his mark on the world. As his moment in the spotlight parallels a cultural boiling point surrounding racial injustice, Claye seeks to use his voice to inspire his community’s youth, serving as a positive role model for the next generation. About Will Claye

Three-time Olympic medalist Will Claye started his path as a world-class athlete. By way of track and field, he was able to move into starting his brand ELEVATE, music and philanthropy. Will’s brand grew largely at the London Games in 2012, where he earned a bronze medal in the long jump and a silver medal in the triple jump to become the first man since 1936 and the first American since 1904 to obtain medals in both events. The Phoenix, AZ native of Sierra Leone-descent solidified himself as the #3 triple jumper of all time in 2019 and at the same time released an EP, WEST SIDE STORY, and single “TMS.”

The catalyst for Will’s music career came from artist YG inviting him to the studio and the pair creating IDGAF, what is now known as a classic West Coast record. From there, Will began to create his own lane and his own sound, taking inspiration from Bob Marley, Andre 3000, Snoop Dogg, DJ Quick, Pharrell, Jay Z, Nipsey Hussle, Kendrick Lamar, and Nate Dogg. With a wide array of influences, Will has created a sound that is eclectic and diverse, based on how he is feeling and what is going on in life. He is a rare combination of talent and genuine humility, recognizing that he can use his status as an artist and professional athlete to help others.
