Fabtech Conference 2021

By: Skyler Johnson

Coronavirus affected every single aspect of society, including factory labor. The Fabtech 2021 conference showcased the top metal forming brands in Taiwan, discussing the unique ways they were able to adapt to Covid-19.

Mechalogix was the first company that spoke. They designed a system designed to lower labor costs through computers that actually monitor the performance of the machines and send back statistics to the operator, allowing the user to gain statistics from the strength of a saw blade to overall performance. If something needs to be replaced, the user will know, and a mechanic can be sent to the machine. But, no one needs to be watching the machines, which allows for a decrease in labor costs.

SEYI has developed a computer program that allows for users to interface with a lot of different aspects of the press, figuring out the analysis of the machine, including operation analysis and downtime analysis. Like with Mechalogix, the technology is able to send messages immediately to maintenance personnel.

Tailift has implemented a system to help in decreasing the time between taking orders and delivering products by using different web services that cut out the middleman between taking orders and delivering products, and have secured high speed internet and a strong firewall to do so. The company has also invested in technology including utilizing robot arms which help to increase efficiency and decrease maintenance costs

Da Jie is utilizing automated technology in order to avoid human cluster as a result of the pandemic, thus leading to more efficiency in production and 50% of the material being saved. SImilar to Tailift, the company uses robotic arms and other devices in order to save on cost.

Ultimately, metal forming companies have implemented a lot of changes in order to deal with the pandemic, making their systems smarter and more efficient in the process. The pandemic has hurt everyone, but these factories were able to adapt.

  • Katalin Karikó and Dr. Drew Weissman: Modified mRNA Technology Used in COVID-19 Vaccines

Fundamental research by biochemist Katalin Karikó and immunologist Drew Weissman laid a critical piece of the foundation for the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna. The mRNA vaccines have been crucial in the fight against the COVID-19 respiratory disease caused by SARS-CoV 2, a new coronavirus discovered in 2019. Nearly 1 billion mRNA vaccine doses have been administered worldwide since December 2020.

Ophthalmologist Patricia Bath invented a new device and technique to remove cataracts known as laserphaco. Different than phacoemulsification that uses ultrasound, it could perform all steps of cataract removal, including making the surgical incision, destroying the lens and vacuuming out the fractured pieces.

German engineer Carl Benz was the first to design a car around the internal combustion engine rather than adding an engine to an existing wagon or carriage, a critical insight in auto evolution. By integrating the engine, chassis and drive into a single entity, Benz set the standard for all future automotive design and engineering.

James Buchanan Eads created a series of inventions during the 1800s that improved transportation and the military defense of the Mississippi River region. G Herbo – Stand the Rain

Unleashing the heat at a prolific pace, chart-topping phenom and platinum-selling G Herbo uncovers the music video for his latest single “Stand The Rain (Mad Max).” Watch it HERE. It’s available on his critically acclaimed chart-topping new album, 25, out now. Listen to 25: HERE

The black-and-white (and green) visual shot by No More Heroes opens with Herbo reading his own “30 Under 30” cover story in Forbes. However, the action unfolds in frenetic fashion as the clip follows him to church, the basketball court, and the gun range as he delivers each successive rhyme with more intensity than the last. No matter what, he’ll make you feel like you can “Stand The Rain” too.

It also arrives on the heels of the music video for “Cold World,” which has already clocked 2.4 million YouTube views and counting. Of the track, Complex claimed Herbo “is reaching new heights” as it also attracted plugs from The Source, Revolt, AllHipHop, and many more.

25 recently crashed the Top 5 of the Billboard Top 200. It not only became his second straight bow in the Top 10 of the chart, but it also emerged as his highest debut yet. It has amassed over 182 million streams and earned widespread praise. Starring on its latest cover, KAZI Magazine went as far as to christen him “Chicago’s Street Rap Messiah,” and HYPEBEAST dubbed it, “Arguably the rapper’s most vulnerable record to date.

G Herbo opens up like never before on the record. Complex hailed it as “a confessional album that opens a window into his world at the quarter-century mark.” His raps rip deeper, while the hooks hit harder than ever. He’s delivered a project that speaks to the struggles of the Windy City and this generation while showing it’s possible to build an empire.

As such, G Herbo has assembled his biggest, boldest, and the best body of work to date with 25. Among these 19 tracks, he recruited a cohort of A-list collaborators, including Polo G and Lil Tjay on “Cry No More,” 21 Savage on “T.O.P.”, and The Kid LAROI and Gunna on “You Can’t.” Through and through, his authoritative flows, incisive choruses, and raw heart shine.

He bulldozed a path for the project earlier this year with “Break Yoself,” and “Really Like That.” The FADER attested, “The tracks feel like siblings with their gunmetal-black sounds and visions of violence and wealth, though I can imagine turning up to ‘Really Like That’.” Plus, 25 boasts the fan-favorite “Statement,” nearing 10 million streams.

G Herbo is back, and he’s ready to flip the game upside down once and for all on 25. Merch including T-Shirts, Hoodies, and CD’s are available to shop HERE.

About G HERBO

After quietly grinding for years out of his native Chicago, G Herbo established himself as not only a platinum-selling, chart-topping phenomenon, but also as a staunch mental health advocate and proponent for change in the black community. Following a string of acclaimed projects, his critically celebrated third album PTSD bowed at #7 on the Billboard Top 200, received praise from Rolling Stone as “his most vulnerable album to date,” and yielded one of the most important songs of 2020—the platinum-certified title track “PTSD” [feat. Juice WRLD, Lil Uzi Vert, & Chance the Rapper]. Additionally, he launched the Swervin’ Through Stress youth mental health program which was recognized by Forbes 30 Under 30. To further his commitment to championing these causes, he is also remodeling an old, shuttered, public elementary school into a community center in Chicago. In 2021, he reached new heights yet again. His fourth full-length offering, 25, soared to the Top 5 of the Billboard Top 200, marking his second consecutive Top 10 and highest debut to date. Racking up hundreds of millions of streams right out of the gate, Pitchfork attested, “As Chicago’s G Herbo has gotten older, his music has become more urgent,” while he adorned KAZI’s cover. Simultaneously, he appeared on multiple #1 albums such as Pop Smoke’s Faith [“Run Down”] and The Kid LAROI’s F*CKLOVE3+:OVER YOU  [“Don’t Leave Me”] as well as collaborating with Dave East and Harry Fraud. With a larger-than-life fanbase, G Herbo has shared the stage with everyone from Miley Cyrus to Marshmello.

Deanna Carter – Did I Shave My Legs for This?

To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Deana Carter‘s 5X platinum debut album Did I Shave My Legs for This?, Carter announced this morning on The Bobby Bones Show that Capitol Nashville/UMe will release Did I Shave My Legs For This? 25th Anniversary Edition on November 5, but it isn’t just Carter doing the singing this time around. The project includes two new tracks with Carter performing and producing 2021 versions of the CMA award-winning, and 2X platinum hit single “Strawberry Wine,” featuring  Lauren Alaina, Martina McBride, Ashley McBryde, Kylie Morgan, and Vince Gill on guitar, as well as the title track, featuring Terri Clark, Sara Evans, Ashley McBryde, and Vince Gill.

The 25th anniversary editions of the album have been remastered from the original recordings and will be released on CD with two bonus tracks, as well as a Digital Deluxe with an additional ten songs, seven of which will be available digitally for the first time. Pre-order/Pre-save HERE

“I am beyond blown away to see the generational connection between my first single, ‘Strawberry Wine’ and all the fans, young and seasoned,” award-winning country singer-songwriter.

Carter shares. “Being a part of a song that has become an anthem for the ’90s and beyond is such a blessing and more than I could’ve ever dreamed of. The fans have been the catalyst for the success of “Strawberry Wine” and the whole Shave album because of their connection to the truth and realness behind the songs.

“They lived it, just like I did, and just like all of my collaborators did. It was an honor to re-record two favorites with my fellow female artists who inspire me and who I admire. These new versions are a way of raising a glass to everyone who loves these songs, and to the country radio stations still playing them, and to say thank you. I hope everyone enjoys celebrating 25 years of Did I Shave My Legs For This? as much as I’ve enjoyed putting together these very special releases.”

1997 CMA Single and Song of the Year “Strawberry Wine,” written by Matraca Berg and Gary Harrison, was also nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Country Song, the Academy of Country Music Awards Best Country Song,  and the Country Music Radio Awards for Song of the Year. Carter co-wrote the title track “Did I Shave My Legs for This?” with Rhonda Hart.

“Who knew that some girl talk would end up becoming a cultural catchphrase for decades to come? Wow! This song is proof that a genuine, heartfelt message can be delivered with a sense of humor,” she added, “yet stand firm in the conviction to not settle for less in this life. Thanks to all the ladies who have sung this anthem at the top of their lungs and to my record label for letting me boldly title my debut album so memorably.”

Other chart-toppers from Carter‘s debut album included “We Danced Anyway” (co-written by Berg and Randy Scruggs), “How Do I Get There” (co-written by Carter and Chris Farren), and “Count Me In” (co-written by Carter and Chuck Jones).

As part of the album’s 25th Anniversary celebration, Carter will perform on the Grand Ole Opry Saturday, October 16, as part of the Opry’s 4,998th show. To purchase tickets, click HERE.

Oompa via Ally Schmaling for use by 360 Magazine

Oompa – OUTTA PATIENCE

Armed with an innate sense of melody, Boston Rapper and spoken word poet Oompa has been making major waves with her sharp storytelling. From features with Apple Music’s Ebro Discovered, Def Jam’s Here Comes The Break, Ones to Watch, EARMILK, and AudioFemme. One thing is for sure, Oompa is not an artist to be slept on. She came in swinging with her dynamic, New Orleans-bounced inspired single “OUTTA PATIENCE”.

The third single from the forthcoming album UNBOTHERED, “OUTTA PATIENCE” uncovers another layer in Oompa’s journey of healing and self-reflection; a sentiment explored throughout the project. It’s a high-energy and straight-talking track where Oompa raps about her frustrations “for the politics of the industry that want me to think I’m not it. I’m it. I’m running out of patience for doing other people’s work. I’m running out of patience for my own bull”. Lyrically, it’s an incredibly honest piece of work that taps into the purgative nature of experiencing personal growth amidst global turmoil. Where previous singles like “GO” and “LEBRON” explored feelings of joy, love, and self-confidence, “OUTTA PATIENCE” is a reminder that discomfort and pressure are a part of the process. A process that Oompa has intricately shared, leaving no stone unturned on “UNBOTHERED”.

Produced by frequent collaborator Dephrase, “OUTTA PATIENCE” taps into Oompa’s love for the New Orleans’ bounce sound to create a danceable bop that’s ripe for the end-of-summer months. “I want you to feel this track from the minute the sample drops, until the dance break at the end. I want your body to feel impatient and like it has to move. This track is all about the energy that you feel when you press play on this song. It’s the right follow-up to ‘LEBRON’’s energy. I need you to remember what these songs made summer feel like”.

2021 has shaped up to be a massive year for the Roxbury rapper. Showcasing her ability to transcend genres, Oompa recently joined rock band Blue Light Bandits onstage, as well as performed as support act for electronic artist Marc Rebillet’s sold-out show at Boston’s Royale Nightclub. For audiences who have come to know Oompa for her award-winning live performances backed by a full-band, the wait is finally over. Oompa will be returning to headline her own performance for the UNBOTHERED Album Release Show at Boston’s Paradise Rock Club on October 8.

About Oompa

Oompa is a nationally acclaimed, Boston-born, poet, rapper, and educator, who is forever representing the queer, black, orphaned, hood kids n’ them. She was named one of NPR’s 2020 Slingshot Artists to Watch and her engaging, interactive performing style won her the Boston Music Award for Live Act of the Year in 2019, following her 2018 Unsigned Artist of the Year victory among an unprecedented 12 total nominations. In a 2019 feature, WBUR’s the Artery describes the lyric-focused rapper as having a “natural tenderness with language” and calls her verses “funny…incisive and memorable.” Oompa showed this poetic prowess as the winner of the 2017 Women of the World Poetry Slam and a finalist in the 2016 National Poetry Slam. With the release of her newest album, Cleo, Oompa has sold out the Sinclair and a number of other Boston venues.

In November 2020, Oompa dropped her most recent single entitled “Closer” along with a striking visual component. The song showcases a new sonic direction for her music and the lyrics convey a refusal to falter or be reactionary in the face of multiple global crises; the pandemic and an intense awakening about what it means to be Black in the world. This song isn’t a promise to be a cure to the world’s ills, but something that aims to counter the effects of the poison. Her next project, “Unbothered” is set to release in Fall 2021.

Lola Young – Fake

Fresh off the release of her new EP After Midnight, rising star Lola Young returns with a brand new single, “FAKE,” out today via Capitol Records. She’ll make her U.S. television debut by performing the song on “The Late Late Show With James Corden” after being hand-picked by Corden himself. Tapping into a vibe that Janis Joplin might have come up with if she was a 20-year-old South Londoner living in 2021, “FAKE” fuses soaring vocals, shimmering guitars and stomp-along drums, playing out, as Young says, “like a scene from a Tarantino movie.” The song was produced by Paul Epworth (Paul McCartney, Beck, Adele). “FAKE,” which will have its UK radio premiere on BBC Radio 1 with Clara Amfo, is available for download/streaming HERE. Watch the visualizer HERE.

“FAKE” is a song about remembering the core of who you are,” explains Lola Young. “There is so much constantly being sold to us, so much that is trying to tell us who to be, whether it’s an advert or person on the street. How would we be if we ignored it all? When writing this song I was trying to drown out all the noise, it ‘s about remembering that everything other than what you personally believe isn ‘t the truth and to listen to your instinct about what ‘s fake. I hope whoever hears this relates and feels a sense of empowerment towards anything or anyone that has made them feel inadequate in their life.”

Young takes her place today as an Amazon Next Breakthrough Artist and will appear on the cover of their Breakthrough playlist worldwide. Following her UK tour with Dermot Kennedy and festival performances, she ‘ll launch a fall UK/EU headline tour. View itinerary HERE.

Her stripped-down After Midnight EP, released last month with an accompanying film that was directed by Dumas Haddad, tells the story of one night in Young ‘s life, tracing the hours between midnight and 5 a.m. She moves from feeling confident and in control to gradually becoming more vulnerable and, eventually, entering a manic state of mind, where Young leaves nothing on the table.

Billboard praised the “velvet-voiced Lola Young” and Clash Magazine hailed her music as “touching [and] honest.” The Honey Pop said, “With her sultry voice and such an explosion of talent, [Young ‘s] emotional loops hit us hard.” Hailed as “a star on the rise” by ELLE UK, the 20-year-old artist is fiercely independent and uncompromising. Her work to date the powerful singles “Ruin My Makeup” and “Woman,” her debut collection of tracks, Intro, and second release, the Renaissance EP received support across the board from the likes of Billboard, Atwood Magazine, Wonderland and British Vogue.

The Nation Reflects on Occupy Wall Street

On the ten year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, that week’s issue of The Nation reflects on the movement’s signature contributions and lasting influence. The Nation was an early watcher of OWS—devoting not one but two special issues to the movement and its moment. They published Naomi Klein’s speech declaring “this beautiful movement [the] most important thing in the world” and Richard Kim’s profile of the protesters in all of their “audacity”; Astra Taylor on media messaging and Nathan Schneider on the debates that threatened to break apart Occupy. As an organization that believes there are always alternatives—in history, in politics—we celebrate the spirit, energy, and legacy of Occupy.

Occupy Wall Street unexpectedly inaugurated a new wave of protest. The domestic manifestation of a worldwide explosion of digitally networked social movements, it scaled up rapidly, attracting enormous public and media attention. But the protesters were evicted from New York City’s Zuccotti Park and other occupied spaces after only a few months, and Occupy dissipated soon afterward. Some commentators have dismissed it as a meteoric flash in the pan, while others have criticized its “horizontalist” structure and lack of concrete demands.

The past decade has witnessed some of the largest protests in US history, as well as the unprecedented impact of Sanders’s presidential campaigns and the growth in the number of young people (and some growth among older ones as well) who openly support socialism. Would all of this have happened without Occupy Wall Street? We reconnected with original Occupy organizers to explore their political activities since 2011 and to hear their reflections on OWS’s legacy a decade later.

Josh Johnson – Fallin’

The Daily Show writer, comedian, and artist Josh Johnson has shared “Fallin (With Groovebox & Jesse Cale),” the original work that bookends Trevor Noah Presents Josh Johnson: # (Hashtag), out September 30 via Comedy Central Records.

“In a special about the world feeling like it’s in free fall, and a year that saw me plunged even deeper into the grip of an online rat race to belong and get attention, ‘Fallin’ is the perfect theme song,” says Johnson. “It’s about comparison and connection, about letting go without being gone and taking time to catch yourself. It was co-written by me and Groovebox, who lends his incredible vocals with a feature from Jesse Cale.”

Vulture named # (Hashtag) one of the ‘Best Comedy Specials of 2021’ saying, “the best representation so far of a comedy special that attempts to bridge what just happened with an effort to reincorporate that experience into the rest of life… Johnson’s cool, controlled, endearing stage presence is completely winning.”

Variety named Johnson a ‘Comic To Watch in 2021’ and The New York Times said, “Josh Johnson is a rising star” in covering his mistape,  Elusive and # (Hashtag). Johnson recently starred in “The Really Cool Converse Club” commercial directed by Tyler, The Creator.

Trevor Noah Presents Josh Johnson: #(Hashtag) is Executive Produced by Josh Johnson, Trevor Noah, Haroon Saleem, Bob Bain, Samantha Murphy, and Mainstay Entertainment’s Norm Aladjem, Derek Van Pelt, and Sanaz Yamin. half•alive – Make of It

Long Beach based trio half•alive released their new single “Make of It” along with the music video via RCA Records. Watch HERE. “Make of It” is written by half•alive and OJIVOLTA (Kanye West, Shawn Mendes, Justin Bieber, Halsey, Jon Bellion) and produced by OJIVOLTA. The video is directed by Emma Portner.

Josh Taylor from half•alive says, “as always, there’s so many stories that went into the making of this song. writing, production, etc. but there was one moment of clarity in the writing process one night that felt like the crux to unlock this very personal story of mine which became Make of It. That moment happened when our producer Mark (of OJIVOLTA) stared at me during one of our writing sessions & abruptly asked “do you ever get mad? if so, would a half•alive fan who doesn’t speak English be able to tell if you were just from your tone?” After thinking about the question for a while, I came to realize that there was an anger-sized hole missing in our songs. There were stories that I was restricting myself from writing because I wanted them to be perfectly processed, with happy endings to tie everything together. but sometimes the unprocessed, unhindered emotion is what the song needs. when that was realized, i turned on my mental faucet of unfiltered anger, 45 minutes later, the song was done.”

“Make of It” follows previously released tracks “Summerland,” “Time 2,” and “What’s Wrong” which came out earlier this year. “What’s Wrong,” which was “Most Added” at Alt Radio around its launch, had garnered over 12.2 million streams worldwide. half•alive also performed it on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! last month. Check it out HERE.

Over the course of the next year, they crafted what became their massive breakout “still feel.” which has been RIAA certified Gold, rocketed into the Top 10 at Alt Radio and has over 276 million worldwide streams to date. The video organically surpassed the 10 million mark within two months as the song garnered acclaim from NPR’s coveted “All Songs Considered” and more.
