New Forum Auctions Paintings

Forum Auctions is delighted to offer several exemplary works in its upcoming sale of Editions and Works on Paper 15002021 on Thursday 17th March 2022. A work by the ever-popular English artist Damien Hirst (b. 1965) titled Virtues comprises the complete set of eight laminated giclée prints, dating from 2021, notably with matching edition numbers.

Virtues features eight cherry blossom prints, each named after one of the eight Virtues of Bushidō according to Nitobe Inazō‘: Honor, Mercy, Politeness, Control, Justice, Courage, Honesty and Loyalty.

With a nod to pointillism, action painting, and impressionism, the Cherry Blossoms symbolize the natural joy of spring. In colors and on aluminum composite panels, each is signed in pencil and with matched edition numbers from the respective editions of each work. Published by HENI Editions, the set carries an estimate of £80,000-£120,000.

Another top highlight is a work by one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century, David Hockney (b. 1937). Hockney is known for experimenting across mediums: from drawing, printmaking, and photography, to painting and digital experimentation. His subjects range from landscapes to portraits and still lifes. His highly popular works encapsulate much of what is around him, from friends and acquaintances to animals. The work in the sale, titled Waiter, Alexandria, portrays a figure in bright colors captured in colored pencil and graphite on wove paper. It dates from 1963 and has an estimate of £50,000-£70,000.

Another visually impressive and important highlight is a large-scale work by the British artist and novelist Harland Miller (b. 1964), who is famed for painting canvases that depict Penguin book covers, a theme that enables him to delve into the interactions between images, text, meaning, and a subject that he experiments with in his mixed-media and sculptural works.

Miller captures his audience’s attention, not just by his visual motifs, but also by his smart use of interwoven language, such as his cleverly devised book titles that appear in his works, often making a statement on classical, or contemporary literature, or topical subjects. This is demonstrated by the work in the upcoming sale. Titled Save the Penguin, the work bears the slogan ‘There’s plenty More Plastic Bags in the Sea’, a cynical take on ‘Plenty More Fish in the Sea,’ and the environmental effect of modern plastic use. This unique pigment print extensively hand-colored in graduating blue and white acrylic with graphite additions is signed and dated 2020. It has an estimate of £30,000-£50,000.

Over at Dreweatts is an equally impressive sale that includes the discovery of a new work by one of the most important British artists of the 20th century, the esteemed British sculptor Henry Moore (1898-1986). After two years of working with the Henry Moore Foundation and the family of the owner, former Publisher and Editor of The Architectural Review Hubert de Cronin Hastings (1902-1986), the sculpture, titled Mother and Child which has now been authenticated.

Commenting on the discovery, Dreweatts’ specialist Francesca Whitham, said: “It has been such a fascinating journey working with this rare Henry Moore sculpture. I was elated, after many months of delays due to covid restrictions, to finally receive the letter from the foundation authenticating the piece as a genuine Moore. Dreweatts are honored to bring this sculpture to the market for the very first time, presenting an opportunity to purchase a unique and rare sculpture by one of the most important British artists of the 20th century.”

The foundation was able to link the work to a sketch of the sculpture by Moore already held in its’ records, titled Eighteen Ideas for Sculpture, which he produced in 1939.

The sculptural group is believed to have been gifted to Hubert de Cronin Hastings directly by Henry Moore, as they met through The Architectural Review, via Moore’s friend Jim Richards, Assistant Editor of the magazine at the time, who had befriended Moore after writing an article on his work for the magazine in 1934. The sculpture was passed down by Hubert to his son, John Hastings in the 1970s, remaining on his mantlepiece amongst an eclectic mixture of objects until he passed away in 2019.

The work is also considered an extremely rare piece as it is cast in lead, which was a material the sculptor only used for a short period in the 1930s, during a time in his career when he was experimenting with other materials such as string and wire for his series of stringed sculptures. Mother and Child is believed to be a preliminary design for one of these stringed sculptures, which explains the unusual markings on the front of the sculpture, which add to its’ joyful and playful nature.

Mother and Child is a stunning figural group in trademark Moore semi-abstract style. Formed in lead, the work has been dated to 1939-1940 and will be offered in Dreweatts Modern & Contemporary Art sale on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, with an estimate of £30,000-£50,000. However, due to the popularity of works by the artist and the rarity of this type of work from the artist’s oeuvre, it may achieve much more.

Commenting on the quality of the sales, Stephan Ludwig, CEO across both the Dreweatts and Forum auctions business, said: “These two auctions of Modern & Contemporary artworks taking place on 16th and 17th March underscore one of the many rationales for the merger of Dreweatts and Forum Auctions. With a combined £1,500,000 anticipated sales total, spanning fine art, sculpture, and prints, we are pleased to be delivering on our objective to grow across all sectors of the art market.”

Interview with Netta Walker

All-American: Homecoming, spinoff series to The CW’s hit sports drama All American, recently aired the first episodes. Up-and-coming actress Netta Walker plays a large role in the series. She talked with 360 about the role, her life, and her career as an actress.  You can follow her on Instagram and Twitter, and you can find her biography HERE.

1. What was your upbringing like?

I grew up on Westside in Jacksonville, Florida with 3 older brothers (all 10 years plus older than me). We were military kids—my dad was in the Navy, he met my mom in Manila when they were basically teenagers. My mother moved to the states when she married my dad and brought all of her Cebuan/Tacloban culture with her to Jax. Culture, family, and tradition were wildly important in our house. Our Christmas meals consisted of crab boils, squid adobo, greens, lumpia, baked beans, sometimes chicken feet if we could afford it. We didn’t have much money, so on weekends my mom would set up a booth at the Romona Flea Market and we’d sell whatever she could make. At one point she was hand-making dresses for child pageants and had me walking around Wal-Marts with her while she handed out her business cards. It’s wild because my parents really taught us how to hustle and made sure we knew that culture, practical life skills, and intellect were the only things that couldn’t be taken from us. I attended two historically black schools in the area for both middle and high school. My middle school, James Weldon Johnson, was on an HBCU campus (Edward Waters University) at the time. Every morning we sang Lift Every Voice and Sing, and during PE we watched the University have marching band and majorette practice on the field next to us. My high school, Stanton College Preparatory, was the first school made for black students in Florida. Both were highly competitive academic magnet schools in all-black neighborhoods with black women principles—I got WILDLY lucky. My parents were very serious about my education, and my dad made sure I knew the importance of academics in southern black culture. He was one of the first black students sent to an all-white school in Jacksonville when white folk threw bricks at him for simply pursuing an education. He prepped me for a world that wasn’t guaranteed to be kind to me, he taught me that I’d have to work 3 times as hard to get where I wanted to and that I could never slip up. My mom was on the road to being an Olympic swimmer for the Philippines and was a model in Japan, but when she got pregnant pretty young she took to the life of raising us and making sure we would want for nothing. She taught me that love is what keeps us all connected, and that so long as I lead with love I won’t regret my life. I was raised by fighters.

2. What is your relationship with Chicago, the city you worked and lived in?

Chicago is the city that made me the artist I am today. I can’t praise it enough. I always saw Chicago as the place artists go to get better at their craft, because lord knows we don’t go there to make money or get famous. The love people carry for their craft there is outstanding. I’d tell any young person aspiring to be an actor to go to Chicago and study. Go to Steppenwolf or The Gift and see the greats do the work up close and personal, and then decide if this is the field for you. I’d never felt so compelled to be an artist until I moved there and got to see the work the artists there create. It’s hands down one of my favorite cities in the world and I plan to rep it as mine for the rest of my life.

3. Who are your biggest influences?

My family. My parents showed me that the world wasn’t always going to be kind to me, but in spite of whatever it threw at me that I could still do anything I put my mind to. My dad encouraged me to remember how smart I actually am and to never back down from what’s right. He was the biggest influence in my life hands down. I live every day for him, in hopes of making him proud. My mom taught me how to live in love and solely move in love, she is truly my heart, I’d do anything for her. My brothers are the coolest men I’ve ever met, for real. My brother Eric is 10 years and 2 days older than me, so I’ve been trying to be him since I was 4. I dress like him to this day and watch only the anime he tells me to. My brother Anthony has inspired me by standing in his truth his whole life, I never would’ve learned how to trust and love myself without him. My oldest brother AJ showed me that we can make life whatever we dream of making it. My family has shaped every facet of who I am today and I love them all so deeply for it, as much as they get on my nerves.

4. Why did you decide to become an actress?

I had an incredible high school theater teacher, Shirley Sacks Kirby, who saw potential in me and was the first person to seriously encourage me to pursue a career in acting. She made me feel like I was actually good at something, and I never felt that way before. I was content in fading into the background and leaving my emotions to the side in my everyday life, but in theater, I was allowed to express all my pent-up emotions. She told my mom to put me in dance classes and voice lessons and monologue coachings, she helped me write and submit all of my college theater applications and put together all of my auditions. She shouted words of affirmations at me when I felt insecure and told me that I was special and talented when I felt like I wasn’t ever going to be good enough. She was my theater mom, and I owe my career to her.

5. You’ve been an actor for several years. What has been your favorite role?

My favorite role is always the next role, honestly. I love the challenges of diving into a new person, figuring them out, and falling in love with them—and exploring new characters feels like falling in love. But strictly speaking, Ophelia in Hamlet (at The Gift Theater directed by Monty Cole) may have been the most cathartic and challenging. My father had just passed that summer and playing a woman who loses herself in the grief of her father was really visceral and scary, but that excited me. Monty is also one of my favorite directors to exist, The Gift is my artistic home, and Shakespeare was how I started acting—so that role meant an indescribable amount to me.

6. What is your favorite part about being in All-American: Homecoming?

It feels like I’m participating in history. These stories, it’s an honor. The characters and their relationships feel monumental to me simply because we’re at an HBCU and representing culture.

7. Tell us a little bit about your character on the show?

Keisha is trouble, there’s no doubt about it. She’s a very strong and intelligent woman who isn’t afraid to stand on all ten toes and say “This is who I am, this is what I believe, and I’ll fight you if you have a problem”. She’s a pre-med major with an intense passion for dancing and a deep love for those she allows into her life. She’s the type to give you the shirt off her back—but also tell you how you can get your own shirt so we don’t have to do this again. She hits very close to home. I adore her.

8. On your Instagram, it’s clear you’re a big fan of Japanese anime. What are your favorite shows/movies?

Ah man, there are so many good ones. In terms of classics, Trigun hands down, it gives me hope and serves the retro style and storyline I adore. Inuyasha was my first anime crush, so Yashahime has also been nostalgic and sweet. My big brother Eric introduced me to Demon Slayer because he thought Nezuko reminded him of me so that show holds a lot of sentiment (my brother honestly is the reason I watch anime at all). Of course Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online, they both make me terribly anxious but I can’t stop watching them. The Boondocks isn’t Japanese but it makes me laugh like nothing else, it feels like an intersection of culture for me. Guilty pleasure watch is fully Ouran High Host Club, don’t judge me on that, I’m a romantic!

9. What’s your dream role?

I think my dream role is whatever thing is next. Getting to act is already such a dream, but I’m always dreaming about what story I get to tell next. There isn’t a definitive narrative to the dreams, but I do love playing characters who would never be in the same room together.

10. What’s next for Netta Walker?

We’re gonna see! Hopefully, I can scam my way into some exciting movies or into some provoking plays in New York. I’ve dreamed of being on Broadway for as long as I’ve wanted to an actor, so fingers crossed that happens! I never know what’s next honestly, my career has lowkey felt like a fever dream. But I’m so excited to see what the future holds.

Neneh Cherry Buffalo Stance Artwork via Republic Records for use by 360 Magazine

Robyn × Mapei – Buffalo Stance

Neneh Cherry graced us with “Buffalo Stance” in the late 80s, a generation-defining song about inner city life that turned music on its head. Paired with her ferocious energy and a punk attitude like no other, the genre-defying track dominated the world, reaching No.3 in the UK and the US, where it went Gold. It took the No.1 spot in Neneh’s native Sweden and The Netherlands plus Top 5 in Belgium, Canada, Finland, Greece, Norway, Switzerland and more. “Buffalo Stance” switched up the game not only in music but in culture and fashion too and we’ve not looked back since, until now via Republic Records

An artist that’s ever evolving, exploring and collaborating, Neneh hands the creative reins over to long-time friend, one of pop’s treasured musical geniuses and woman behind some of the most memorable songs of recent decades, Robyn, for a new version of her seminal track. It’s the first single from the Grammy-nominated artist since the release of her acclaimed album Honey, and is the product of one Swedish icon passing the baton on to another. In true Robyn fashion, “Buffalo Stance” has been transformed into a slinky, scandipop song—slowed down and stripped back with electronic shimmers and layered vocals. It’s an intoxicating re-imagining. Robyn also enlists polymath musician Dev Hynes to add his special touch on the production and Mapei for a fresh take of iconic rap. Listen to “Buffalo Stance” HERE.

Neneh says: “I love that I could write an essay with all the things I could say about Robyn and I love that she leaves me speechless at the same time. Her talent is soulful because she leads with her heart and spirit. She is absolutely there, ever present with honest intensity in her offerings which leave me blubbering with hairs standing erect on my arms and legs, dancing on my own, talking to myself, with a feeling that everything is going to be alright. The first time I saw Robyn live in Stockholm with my daughter Mabel (then a young struggling teenager) she only said two things that night: ‘Hej Stockholm’ and in the middle of a song shouted out ‘MABEL!’”…she stole my heart. I’ve known Robyn for 3 decades, she is my sister, my friend, my family, a creative inspiration. So to have Robyn doing her version of a new life interpretation of ‘Buffalo Stance’ is an absolute honor…and with Dev Hynes and Mapei, this is what dreams are made of!”

Robyn‘s new take on “Buffalo Stance” marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Neneh and is the first release from a forthcoming collaboration album out later this year.

Last night, Neneh Cherry received the honorary Icon Award at the NME Awards 2022, following previous winners Courtney Love and Shirley Manson, in celebration of her continual contribution to music and unmatched individuality over the past three decades. The award was presented to her by UK top 10 charting artist, BRIT Award winner and Neneh‘s daughter, Mabel, an iconic moment within itself.

Neneh Cherry has continued to define and redefine culture, style and music, releasing five studio albums, including 2018’s Broken Politics, produced by Four Tet, which was met with critical acclaim by the likes of The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The Times, Q, and Pitchfork. 2020 saw her reissue her radically influential debut album Raw Like Sushi to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Must-See Exhibits and Installations

Keith Brammer (Die Kreuzen) leather jacket: Perhaps no other genre of music is so closely associated with the classic black leather jacket than punk rock. Keith Brammer, of Milwaukee’s hardcore punk band Die Kreuzen, has graciously lent his well-worn leather to the H-D Museum. The jacket was purchased in New York City in the 1980s and was a constant companion for Brammer throughout his touring days. Check out the Custom Culture gallery to view this piece of Milwaukee music history.

Inspiration and Recovery: Wounded Veteran Climbs the Seven Summits: In September 2009, Specialist Benjamin Breckheimer, a Cavalry Scout with the U.S. Army 2nd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, was severely wounded during a tour in Afghanistan. His rehabilitation was difficult as he endured numerous surgeries. During this same time, the Harley-Davidson Museum regularly sent care packages–including H-D Museum™ flags dotted with well wishes–to active-duty military personnel. Breckheimer took to mountaineering during his recovery and over the summer carried the H-D Museum™ flag to the summit of Denali, the highest point in North America. With that peak reached, Breckheimer became the first and only Purple Heart recipient to reach all the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. He continues to climb, and he shares his inspiring story to encourage resiliency and support the mental health of veterans and current service members.

Revolution® Max Engine: The brand-new Revolution® Max 1250cc engine powers a new generation of Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. See the liquid-cooled, 60-degree V-Twin that delivers for the Pan America™ adventure touring model and the performance cruiser Sportster® S motorcycle. On view in the Museum lobby.

Clubs & Competition: In the early part of the 20th century, motorcycle culture was a homegrown phenomenon. It grew out of the passion of riders for their evolving sport. The camaraderie that developed around riding and attending competitive events led to the formation of motorcycle clubs that hosted destination rides, family picnics with motorcycle games and other riding competitions.

Harley Fox: Gail Anderson’s 1986 Softail® Custom motorcycle, “Harley Fox,” built by her partner Bob Burrows, took top prize at the first Ladies of Harley® (LOH) ride-in show during Daytona Beach Bike Week in 1987. With her custom bike and themed riding gear, Anderson presented a striking image that fit the growing visibility and exciting new options for women riders in the 1980s.

Alfonso Sotomayor’s 1957 Model FL: The Harley-Davidson Museum is proud to announce its collection has recently grown with the addition of a 1957 Model FL that was ridden by famed Mexican stunt rider and racer Alfonso Sotomayor Canales.

Harley-Davidson’s history in Mexico dates back to at least 1913. In the 1920s, the brand was more frequently spotted throughout Mexico City as the motorcycles proved popular with the local traffic police who would also perform stunts with their Harley-Davidson® bikes. After racing from the 1930s into the 1960s, Sotomayor launched his own stunt riding career by performing the famed “Salto de la Muerte” or Jump of Death. Learn more about Sotomayor’s feats of derring-do and Harley-Davidson’s early entry into Mexico with this new display located in the Custom Culture area.

“Off-Road Harley-Davidson”: In the decades before America paved its highways, early riders had to be prepared for all sorts of terrain: sand, clay or dirt—and wandering those makeshift byways were Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. It’s called off-road or adventure touring; back then it was just called riding. Since 1903, Harley-Davidson motorcycles proved their toughness by riding over wooded hills, through stone-choked creek beds and up mountain sides. “Off-Road Harley-Davidson” tells the history of motorcycles designed for rough roads, the people who rode them and the adventures they shared.

“Building a Milwaukee Icon: Harley-Davidson’s Juneau Avenue Factory”: A recently recovered cache of architectural drawings includes plans for the original Juneau Avenue facility. The pencil drawings, along with archival photographs, demonstrate the whirlwind pace of the company’s early growth. While building an international business—going from producing just over 1,000 motorcycles in 1909 to manufacturing 27,000 motorcycles in 1920—the company’s Milwaukee factory experienced near-constant expansion. Construction through this relatively brief period created the buildings that today, a century later, are still the proud home of Harley-Davidson.

“Building a Milwaukee Icon” provides a snapshot of Harley-Davidson’s formative years and illustrates a chapter of Milwaukee history when the city was known as the “Machine Shop to the World.”

About BabyJake

BabyJake promises he’s “bringing back rock ‘n’ roll.” However, this isn’t your parents’ rock ‘n’ roll. It’s got all of the style, swagger, and spirit of the seventies, but it’s lit up by a fresh fire. The Florida-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and producer exudes enough star power to pull off a cowboy hat and flare jeans, but he’s also a byproduct of the times with a natural predilection for viral impact. In 2019, he introduced himself with the gold-selling “Cigarettes on Patios,” crashing viral charts and piling up 100 million-plus streams. During 2020, the artist remained prolific with his debut EP, Don’t give me problems, give me wine. In its wake, Flaunt predicted, BabyJake is on his way to superstardom,” while he earned acclaim from Billboard, Wonderland, V Magazine, Notion, TMRW Magazine, American Songwriter, The Line of Best Fit, Ones to Watch, This Song is Sick, and Lyrical Lemonade, to name a few.  Along the way, he collaborated with everyone from 24kgoldn to Dillon Francis and Louis The Child.

A&A Family Dance Series

A&A Ballet (A&A), under the artistic direction of Alexei Kremnev and Anna Reznik, announced a new Family Dance Series at the Athenaeum Theater, premiering May 14, 2022, at 3 PM. Fresh from a successful Chicago Youth American Grand Prix competition, the company will debut their take on the internationally acclaimed “Carnival of the Animals” and a world premiere of “The Firebird,” featuring brand-new choreography by Kremnev and sand art animation by Anastasia Antropova. Additional choreography for “The Firebird” will be done by Braeden Barnes. Designed to be enjoyed by the entire family, the selections are recommended for ages three and above.

“We are very excited to renew the Family Dance Theater Series on a new level,” said Kremnev. “As founding Artistic Directors of the Joffrey Academy and the Joffrey Studio Company, we started the Children’s Ballet Theater program at the Joffrey in 2010 by presenting new innovative family-oriented works that excite a new generation of young audiences. Our demanding XXI Century requires us to experiment with new visual forms and to be creative and daring. A&A has a wonderful record of producing new works, so we are happy to share this program with the Chicago audiences.”

Described as “equal parts comedic and captivating with a forceful wit and choreography bursting with nuanced athleticism” by The Huffington Post, Carnival of the Animals showcases Kremnev’s talent as an electric storyteller. Breathing new life into a beloved masterpiece, Kremnev’s adaptation serves as a playful reminder to ballet enthusiasts, while introducing new audiences to the art form itself. The costumes, created by Laura Skarich and Ballet Rosa, have been designed specifically for each dancer featuring original art digitally printed onto the fabric.

The world premiere of “Firebird” is Kremnev’s 21st ballet, and his first to feature sand art designed by artist Anastasia Antropova. Projected onto the stage throughout the performance, the sand art combines art, music, and dance by drawing in the sand to create moving effects, enhancing the storytelling of the performers. Serving as an accessible introduction to the work of Stravinsky, “Firebird” is a celebration of the power of music and ballet.

Tickets for the Family Dance Series featuring “Carnival of the Animals” and “Firebird” are on sale now and can be purchased HERE

Thomas Kelham European Range

Inspired by the international success of its Lancia Aurelia ‘Outlaw’ project, Thornley Kelham is expanding its range of modernized and reinterpreted automotive icons, with a new ‘European’ brand. Over the next 12 months, three new reinterpreted motoring legends will be revealed, having been meticulously upgraded and enhanced by the Thornley Kelham team.

Late in 2021, Thornley Kelham first debuted the ‘European’ name for the final three editions of its Aurelia Outlaw, voted as the ‘restomod’ readers of Goodwood Road & Racing would most like to buy. A high-spec ‘European CSL’ variant is the ultimate incarnation of the project, with a handcrafted aluminum body, upgraded ‘Busso’ V6 engine, and fully modernized mechanicals. The result of 5,000 hours of work–800 spent on preparation and paintwork alone–it is the very definition of bespoke, hand-crafted automotive luxury.

Now, the Thornley Kelham team will use experience gleaned from the Aurelia Outlaw project, allied to its multi-marque expertise in producing concours-winning restorations, to expand the ‘European’ line-up. Each member of the ‘European’ range will be authentically reimagined, beautifully handcrafted, and upgraded in ways faithful to that model’s specific personality and lineage.

For more than 10 years, the Thornley Kelham team has been masters of both authentic award-winning restoration work and bespoke, upgraded collector cars. From its 32,000sq/ft fully-equipped facility in the Cotswolds, a talented team of over 30 has produced the Restoration of the Year-winning Bizzarrini 5300GT Strada, the London Concours ‘Best in Show’ Frazer-Nash BMW 328, and the Concorso d’Eleganza class-winning Lancia Astura Torpedo by Viotti.

When customers require additional performance, they can turn to Thornley Kelham’s expert in-house engineering and engine-building team, who can imbue existing historic engines with incredible levels of performance. At the 2018 Le Mans Classic, for example, three cars–two Invicta S Types and a Lagonda–used engines prepared by TK engineers. One S Type produced double the output of the original engine, and the other the overall fastest nighttime speed of the race.

To qualify as a member of the ‘European’ program, a project must bring together this world-class engine-building and chassis experience with decades of top-tier Concours-standard restoration expertise and a dedication to ultimate perfection. In short, it must fulfill three key criteria: design, details, and drive. Derelict examples of iconic sports cars will be transformed into revitalized legends, ready to be used and enjoyed for many decades more.

Simon Thornley, co-founder of Thornley Kelham, said: “In the 1950s, Max Hoffman almost single-handedly turned the American market onto the beautiful agile sports cars of Europe, including Porsche, BMW, and Alfa Romeo. The exotic allure of cars from this part of the world was so enticing that Porsche even sold a number of 356s to the American market badged as ‘European’. It was the first time many Americans had ever encountered these brands, broadening horizons with fresh, exciting new sports cars. It’s this golden era that we want to recapture with the ‘European’ program, offering modern-day buyers the same kind of thrill of finding something new, something beautiful, and something exhilarating.”

Creation of each of the new ‘European’ models is underway with the first commissions of each already secured. Numbers will be strictly limited, with prices from between £250,000-£600,000 plus donor car depending on specification and model.
